Sailing to Skaithvarn:

One of the crewmen had climbed to the very top of the mast and was examining the
horizons with a spyglass. "Land ahead!" he reported. "Looks like the Volarbyn
At Raoul's questioning glance, Goff said, "Highlands just north of Istoreth."
"Ship coming from the north," the lookout added. "I don't recognize her
shape...." He continued to stare northward through the spyglass.
"And that's the flip side of the problem with getting lost from our world," Goff
said as he headed for the steering area. "Somebody getting lost from the Other Side,
wherever that is. Sometimes they act like pirates. We may have a fight on our
Raoul, who had fought in Aruak City as In Gerfel We Trust, rubbed one hand down
the scabbard of his sword and nodded. A fight was something he understood, not like
this skipping in and out of alien dimensions. He could handle a fight, and would.
The two ships were close enough together now that he could see details even from
the deck. They were seeing it head on, so there was no way to tell how long the
other ship was. But it looked blocky, and the sail was tall and rectangular and
seemed to have horizontal ribs; there was a bearded face with staring eyes painted on
the parchment-colored sail in red and black. Definitely not something familiar. He
could just make out some figures near the rail, and if they were men, it meant the
ship was big, really big.
After a moment, Goff handed him the spyglass. "Take a look and tell me what you
make of that."
Raoul wiped his face with his silk handkerchief, refolded it carefully, and put
it back in his pocket. Then he accepted the telescope and squinted through it.
Details leaped into prominence. Several people--they did appear to be men, so far as
he could tell--were scurrying around on the deck of the other ship. He could see the
gleam of sunlight on steel, as though a couple of the men were armed with cutlasses,
but otherwise they looked like ordinary sailors. More or less. One man was studying
the Iayan ship through a spyglass.
"Doesn't look like a warship," Raoul said after a moment. "Looks like a big-
bellied merchant, in fact. But I reckon they'll fight if they think they need to."
Goff nodded, looking gloomy. "Same like us, except we're not a heavy cargo
ship." He sighed. "Let's hope it doesn't come to fighting."
They watched for several minutes while the strange ship drew steadily closer.
Men were working to lower the sail, or perhaps to change the angle, it was hard to be
sure, since nothing seemed to be happening. There wasn't enough wind to make much
difference. Goff's own crew was also working with their sails in an effort to keep
the two vessels from coming together. As matters looked now, Raoul judged that they
wouldn't collide, but only barely.
The merchantman glided near them. A man by the rail waved his arms and called
out something in an unfamiliar language.
Goff mimed confusion and shouted back, "I don't know where you want to go, but
you're in the wrong world." He pointed to the tree-fringed headland visible to the
west. "Skaithvarn!"
The most elaborately dressed man on the other deck gestured confusion and turned
to one of his companions as the ships passed beyond closest approach.
Raoul watched it drift away. "What will happen to them?" he asked.
"If they're lucky, they'll go through another thin spot between worlds and end
up back home. If not..." Goff shrugged. "If they have a good cargo, they'll sell it
wherever they can and adapt to new ways, make a new home for themselves. There's
nothing we can do for them."
"I suppose so." Raoul squinted at the shore. "I suppose what we need to be
doing is thinking about Istoreth, who we want to talk to and what we want to say."
"It will be a delicate issue," Berdan said behind him.
Raoul didn't jump, but if he'd had less self-control, he might have done. The
former assassin could move as silently as a cloud when he wanted to. "Why?" He
figured he knew, but wanted the Fratsfan's angle.
"We need to find Peranis and recover the Black Book without making it sound so
important that someone local decides THEY want it. If Peranis hasn't already sold
it, of course. And if he has sold it to one of the Lords of Istoreth--"
"An even bigger problem," Raoul agreed.

Not in Zuwayza:

The change from the sunlit courtyard to the shuttered interior of the house was
abrupt and extreme enough to blind Tankesh temporarily. He blinked impatiently,
trying to clear his vision, and blundered after the old man as soon as he could see
vague outlines. Furniture seemed to leap out and bite him in the shins. When his
eyes finally adjusted to the shadowed interior of the building, he saw that he was in
a long hallway with arches opening off both sides. The old man was just disappearing
through one half way down on the left. Tankesh hurried after him.
The room was bare and dark, lit only by a single candle, although the
whitewashed walls made it seem brighter than it actually was. The old man was
kneeling on the floor, which was of tile, white tile with black and red and gold ones
inlaid in a series of concentric circles. It looked too much like a target for
Tankesh's comfort; he supposed that was just his imagination. He hoped that's all it
was. He squinted at the symbols the old man was drawing in some of the rings, but
they meant nothing to him. Well, he didn't expect they would. Adie would probably
recognize them, though. Could he remember enough detail to describe them to here
when he got back?
The old man stood up cautiously, one hand on the small of his back. He pointed
with his stick of chalk to a spot in one of the outer rings. "Stand there, young
man, and ask no questions. Pay attention and watch for the proper place to get off.
This is simple, but not easy."
The elf stood where he had been directed and watched the old man take his place
in the center of the circle. "Proper place to get off?"
"When the rim of the circle passes through your world," the old man said.
Sliding his sleeves back on arms like withered sticks, he began to chant.
It was, or it felt like, several minutes before he saw the arch to the hallway
pass in front of him and realized that the circle was rotating. He glanced down, but
there seemed to be no change in the tiles under his feet. Back up, as a corner of
the room slid by, quickly followed by the next one. Definitely rotating, and picking
up speed, too. "When the rim of the circle passes through my world," he muttered.
"How will I know that, unless there happen to be landmarks in sight?"
The old man didn't answer. Tankesh hadn't really expected him to. The walls
blurred and vanished, to be replaced by a seascape with waves breaking on a beach of
white sand and on rocks farther out. A wave sliding inward at the end of its course
dampened the toe of one boot. Pleasant looking, but nothing familiar. Another blur.
A forest of standing stones lit by bluish light from two moons, both near full, and a
smell of fresh-spilled blood. A blur. A true forest, trees like columns reaching
into a green darkness overhead, mist, and a smell of things growing and dying. It
called to something in his elven heritage, but it was not where he needed to be. A
blur that seemed to last longer than the others, there was a hesitation and a pulsing
red light half way through it. Something they weren't going to stop for. Just as
well, that light looked like it might be fire. A large vaulted chamber, the image
wavering slightly and indistinct at any distance from his apparent location. Voices
speaking akhadic. He tried to step out of the circle, but it was like moving through
cold tar. The view began to blur, and he forced himself outward, throwing himself to
the floor outside the circle in a dive.
It seemed to take forever to fall, his motion slowed to the point where he
wasn't even sure he was moving at all. And then there was a sort of soundless click,
and the floor came up fast and hard, knocking the breath out of him as he hit and

                                      SPY REPORT

Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for KYR'TERR. I don't wanna hurt anybody's
feelings or anything, but DARQUE FORCES really goofed with their 0-0-0. The guys at
SHADOW MAGIC like really pulled together to get a 1-0-0 this turn, moving up by 4.
One team deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 1 after going 4-1-0. Keep it
up, HAZAARDS OF CLONING! 14TH ARCTIC GUARDS went in so confident and came out so
sad. But if I got a 0-3-0 my first time, I wouldn't be throwing any major parties
either. MVP award for I OF THE KNEE DOLL? HAZAARDS OF CLONING's proud of it after
beating AIKEN and getting 25 points. Talk about yer big time losers! ULLER got
smashed by EYE OF THE KNEE DOLL, and lost 13 points! The Duelmaster isn't going to
stop just cause he's Number One! SHADOW HAWK knows this. He was challenged by the
Duelmaster. And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh
well, welcome SHADOW HAWK. Aren't 2ND ARCTIC GUARDS proud. (Oh, my.) I hear the top
team insists all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters
for PR photos.
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? WOMBAT DREAMS was KYR'TERR's most
avoided team. Is there some award for that? Hhmph! What kind of warriors are
HAZAARDS OF CLONING? WOMBAT DREAMS, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't
get them to accept an invitation! Like, is SIF popular, or what? She was challenged
the most in all of KYR'TERR! She's got a 7-9-0, is that good? For sure, I was
holding my breath when I found out GRUBS challenged TOMB. After all, haven't WOMBAT
DREAMS and SHADOW GOLD had a long standing duel in KYR'TERR? It wasn't a spectacular
fight, or anything, but TOMB wants me to write about it since he was subdued by
GRUBS. Satisfied?
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Pinch me, I must be dreaming!!! UG
returns from the Dark Arena, maybe a "little upset" at its THE LOWLIFES teammates...
What if they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it
quits. I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

Citizens of Ghea (only the ignorant fail to note Lirith Kai is not in Alastari),
no new day is rising, but the sun is setting on just another beautiful evening.
While you were sleeping, an irksome rabble has entered the always fair Aruak City.
Of course they fought alongside our warriors, most not so treasured, as all
gladiators do. They drank with themselves, and slept with themselves. Whether they
had masks, who cares.
Warriors, don't be afraid. For years Aruak has been one of the safest cities in
Ghea, and that custom has been continually cultivated, and will continue to be by
those who have called it home for years and those who live, fight, and die by the
same ethics. There is no contest, nor has there ever needed to be one for many
years. A conflict of personalities has arisen, and the city has been 'invaded' by
Any rules that are annouced will be purely for the joy of the lemmings' own
little world. Those who are being targeted have no interest in participating except
to defend the integrity of an arena that is different from others. Whether you
choose to come to Aruak, do it for your own reasons, not theirs.
Competing in Aruak City has never been for the faint of heart or the weak willed.
Combat is combat, wherever you go. Blood will flow as always, and now many innocents
will be caught in the middle, but those who defend Aruak's traditions never target
those who bring respect of Aruaki customs with them to our home.
So ignore the private ranting announcement brought by the stuporous
Frothingsloshers. If you choose Aruak City, do not choose it for an unsanctioned and
bogus 'contest', choose it for the tradition. Choose it because Aruak is different.
