I told them of the prison and my despair. I could see the empathy written across their faces as surely as ink on paper. I then told them of Sir Chester's offer. "What?!" Conan exclaimed, spittle flying across the table. "You live as a True Knight? Now that would take a truer change of heart and a lifetime of learning that you haven't got." "Aye, my faithless friend, that it might. But, it is why I have such as you to teach me," I said mockingly, "and, I might add--why you are here!" "I have never refused a challenge in all of my life. Even though it be the death of me, I'll not find a more noble or worthy one in this lifetime," Conan replied seriously, "For to see you walk in the light would surely mean the Light is watching over us all." "Now, what of Sir Chester?" I asked no one in particular. Everyone turned to Hugues as he had spent the most time with the stranger. And, he appeared to know no more than I have already relayed. After our conversation, I began to feel the need to rest. My ordeal, both physically and mentally, had exhausted me. I said as much to the Knights. "Let me show you to your quarters," Hugues offered. "Perhaps after a bath and some sleep you may be able to be better prepared for what lies ahead. And, that may be wise for the remainder of ourselves as well." We arose and Hugues showed me the way. The other Knights didn't appear to be going anywhere and Rex Mundi had lain his head upon his massive arms and closed his eyes. Jaque and Lancelot looked to be about to set upon a conversation of some import. Who knows what these two were about. Hugues and I went below-decks, crossing over cargo that looked to be nothing more than produce, wheels of cheeses, jugs and kegs of wine and ale. Upon reaching my assigned cabin, Hugues opened the rickety door, but did not step in. This is where you will stay," he informed me. "Should you become hungry, you know where the galley is. You will find us there." "What?!" I exclaimed. "You will not rest also? You also have need of repose and will need your wits about you too." "Aye," he agreed, "but there's no room to give us. Besides, you have need of a place to rest far more than us. Have no fear, my friend, we shall rest quite comfortably." "Since this is your wish, I shall abide by it," I assented without arguing further. "Good, now go to sleep and I shall see you on the morrow," he said. "Always, you appear to know what is best," I said half absentmindedly. "Now that," Hugues chuckled, "may be a fact, but it is a surprise to hear you admit it." I laughed also. It was true, but in light of the situation, I'd never submitted myself to another's authority. This dilemma was difficult, but I'd made my bargain and I'd intended to keep it. Besides, in the striking of the bargain, I'd placed myself in a precarious position of debt to another. Hugues closed the door and departed. I heard his footfalls as they began to leave. Since I was now alone, I decided to investigate my surroundings. I found a candle upon a small table just inside the doorway. I took flint and steel, along with a small amount of tinder and lit the candle from the small flame I'd created in the base of the candle holder. The last thing I wanted was to start a fire on a ship at sea. For some ungodly reason, ships were apt to go up in flames very quickly and I'd no wish to cause this one to. I looked about the cabin with apprehension. The room was small, but large enough to hold a bunk with straw ticking, the aforementioned table, and a washtub full of tepid water. I imagine this was done at the captain's orders. Over the back of a wobbly chair hung breeches, tunic, baldric, belt and weapons. All of them appeared not elegant as I was so used to, but quite serviceable none-the-less. I pulled the dagger out of its sheath on the belt for inspection. It was double-bladed, and well balanced. Which was precisely what I needed. I'd shaved with a sword before and had no wish to do so again. After consideration of my past few days, I'd certainly now had no relish to do it tonight. After bathing, shaving and donning my new attire, I lay down upon the mattress. The rocking of the ship upon its voyage soon put me to sleep. I slept as I had not for some time. It was surely true as the sun was well up in the sky when I awoke. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * It was getting dark when the manager of the STDS stable stepped up on the wooden planks of a well known hangout of the DragonMaster, the inn so named after itself, "The Cesspit" where all the dregs hang out! As Upinya walked into The Cesspit he recognized the DragonMaster by the long scaly face that resembled the shape of a dragon's head. Upinya ordered a few nasty drinks that he had never wished to taste again in his life, as he ordered something better...Upinya kept an eye on this funny looking repulsive creature. The DragonMaster had no idea that he was being gazed upon from afar, nor did he probably care, seeing how he was surrounded by his other alliance mates which did not surprise Upinya on bit. What would one expect out of such a coward arse lizard looking freak? Upinya was snickering to himself as the thoughts ran through his mind. Upinya sat in a corner laughing to himself while he thought, "What a Slaghterhouse it would be if DragonMaster or whoever he calls himself were to show up in Dragonhead arena?" Upinya could not hide his big grin and without bringing attention to himself, walked out of the stink hole of an inn and walked away into the night. As Upinya walked away he thought, "I'll have to come back another day in hopes of catching this ugly pus festering fellow alone." Back at the guildhouse Upinya told everyone of his night, and told them to gather up their armor and be ready to move to Dragonhead in hopes of doing battle with the BigMouths and his dregs. As Upinya left the stable gladiators packed their things up and could not wait to get to Dragonhead Arena and wait for a good challenge. Upinya left a note on the table before leaving that dark dank inn and had a troll hand it to DragonMaster after Upinya had left. The note read: DragonMaster and dreg crew, you can find me and my stable in Dragonhead Arena DM-72 and my team will start fighting in the month of Icingwind! Be there if you're up for a battle! Meanwhile there were a few stables that just received a note concerning that DragonMaster may be coming to Dragonhead to do battle with Upinya and his stable. These two other manager's (Upinya's) friends were happy that new blood soon could have a possibility of arriving to Dragonhead and to be spilt on the sands of this mighty city. They all grinned with the thought of this! + ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ The Dark Federation #1 ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ + Xochithlan, the royal palace: Tirisha Dulake leaned closer to her cousin, King Feyen, and pouted. "You can't be so hard hearted, Pootles," she cooed. "It isn't like I'm asking a LOT from you...." Feyen was too dark skinned to blush noticeably, but he felt himself getting rather warm under the collar. "Don't call me that!" he hissed. [It is a gift in the royal family of Xochithlan to be able to hiss words which contain no esses.] "You're the only one who remembers that Mother used to call me that! But what if someone overhears?" He peered around nervously. Eavesdropping was the national pastime in Xochithlan, but he thought his throne room was reasonably secure. Still, if anyone heard her say that name.... He shuddered. "If you'll give me the soldiers, dearest cousin, I'll be so busy and so far away, I'm sure I'll forget." "But Tirisha, I can't! If I sent Xochithlani Royal Guardsmen into Mordanti territory, it could start a war, or at LEAST," he shuddered again, "Samir would send that battlemage of his to 'make an official protest' and the man has NO sense of style at all. His hair, his beard!" King Feyen stroked his own perfect little mustache. "It's impossible, Tirisha, you must see that!" "No, it is NOT impossible." Her coo was getting ragged around the edges, letting the iron determination show through. She took a deep breath, noting that, as with every other man who saw her do that, she had riveted Feyen's attention; after all, they were only second cousins on one side. "You don't need to send the whole Royal Guard. I'm sure I won't need a thousand men in Rodeki. It's such a LITTLE place. A hundred will be enough to protect me, DEAR Feyen." She blew in his ear. Feyen took his own deep breath and managed not to melt on the spot. "Well...a hundred men, then, but no more! And not in Royal Xochithlani uniform, either!" "Of course not, coz." She patted his arm as she straightened up. "I wouldn't want anyone to get the idea they were on YOUR business." She slid out of reach just a little ahead of King Feyen's reaching hands. "You won't have any trouble at all over this, dear coz." *** ***** *** ***** *** Arenamaster Xoron, a practitioner of the Ancient Elvish Martial Art of Seelie- Khuei, was deeply resistant to feminine wiles. He was, however, extremely interested in cash. Tirisha had plenty of cash. "I guess I could find you a few gladiators to serve as a personal bodyguard," he muttered, mentally fingering the coins Tirisha had placed on the table between them. "I couldn't vouch for their reliability, though." "I will attend to that," Tirisha said briskly. "Twenty ounces of gold for every gladiator you can find me. Payable when they sign up." Warriors and managers are invited to accompany Tirisha Dulake to Rodeki, or wherever she may end up going. A note in the personals addressed to Scribe, or an email to Livia@reality.com will do it. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Brewmaster, I really have to apologize for the death of The Baker. First, The Butcher, then, The Baker. What's next? Could it be...? Nah, you wouldn't dare create The Candlestick Maker, would you? And sorry too (yeah, right) that you can't bloodfeud. One of the benies of being.... Duelmaster 2 Phat SPY REPORT If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of DRAGONHEAD brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, FAVORITE THINGS, since EPOCHOLYPSE took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps up, ANCIENT KNIGHTS, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 4 in the rankings? KNIGHTS TEMPLAR turned their 4-1-0 turn into a 4th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see ANDERON win a fight and gain 14 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, KUNG-FU MASTER beat CATER PILLAR and CATER PILLAR lost 21 points. You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, DRAGONHEAD may be getting bland, as 2 PHAT stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you, DRAGONHEAD? He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. SNIVELLS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was VERMIN. Ha ha ha ha! Ooh, I'm frightfully impressed, CYOLIS was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch that ego swell, sports fans. And we have ELGINAWA in a challenge, going down 9 points for the fight. Guess what? I thought ELGINAWA showed great skill and promise when he was bested by DEAD GIRL. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's see if anyone's dead or dying. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later? What does the DRAGONHEAD arena have in common with the inns? It's just as comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so nice! So nyaaah!
