They were a motley bunch, drawn from several teams, managers, and arenas, people he'd found passing through Valamantis on their way from one place to another. Mostly from the arenas where they were fighting--most of them were still in Basic--to some holiday spot for a week's recreation. Most people assumed that gladiators always stayed home, practicing relentlessly, but that was the way to dull your edge, not improve it. He glanced at Arenamistress Sitalva, but she shook her head slightly. It was his show, apparently. He took a breath and began. "You see the towers of Old Valamantis, raised by blood sorcery." Everyone turned to look. Smeds of The Black Company, Mordant, sniffed dismissively. "Second class stonework," he declared. The Dwarf's gesture took in needle-thin towers webbed together with bridges like dreams. "Not really stonework at all; that's built with magic. Was built with magic in the beginning." "Stupid," agreed Shamu (The Watchmen, Cliffhome). The two Dwarves nodded at each other. "Unreliable. Not like good honest stones that stay up whether you're paying attention to them or not." Goblin (The Taken, Kaltos) frowned at the no-longer-ruined city. "You mean somebody's got to pay attention to that all the time, or it falls down?" he asked in a voice like gravel grinding together. "Not EXACTLY," murmured Lavender Lance (Colour Guards, Illis). Quickly, before the two Dwarves could protest, she added, "In principle, yes, quite possibly. But nothing is EVER that simple. What I've heard--I'm no mage, but there's always talk of magic on Illis, you understand--is that a spell can be put into a THING, like, well...like the sound is in a bell, maybe. Or like the light is in a candle. Under the right circumstances, it comes out without anybody having to think about it right THEN, and it keeps on existing as long as the circumstances last. I suppose I'm explaining that very BADLY, but--" "But we follow it well enough," Sputter (Joka Masher, Dwes Eg, Lord Protector) finished. "So there might be a THING that we could break and the towers would fall down, hmm?" "Bringing the towers down again might be a good thing," Ka D'Argos interjected, "but it won't solve the problem here, even if we could find the right spell-holders to destroy. That won't get rid of the people." "Zombies," Groblin growled contemptuously. "Not entirely," Sitalva said. "We haven't gone into the old city, but we've watched it closely, and there are some people who don't appear to be undead." "How can you tell?" Smeds demanded. "Just because somebody's not falling apart doesn't mean he isn't a NEW zombie." "There are live and potent Folstrom wizards in the old city," a new voice said. The pleasant tenor seemed to come out of empty air but was quickly followed by a man in a dark blue robe spangled with silver stars, his hair bound back from his youthful face by a silver band. He bowed slightly. "Tensekai," he introduced himself, "known here as the Silver Mage. Bringing down the towers without first destroying the Folstrom would be futile, a waste of energy. And not easy, either, as the spells that uphold the towers are well guarded. The important thing is that this situation, unnatural and abominable as it is, gives us a chance to undo a great error out of the past. We can destroy the Folstrom this time, rather than merely driving them off." "Correct me if I'm wrong," Lavender Lance murmured, batting her eyelashes at the mage, "but I HAVE read a little history. I thought the Folstrom weren't destroyed because it wasn't possible? They were too strong for the Forces of Good to bring them down completely." Tensekai nodded unhappily. "That's true. But we've had three millennia to study further. We have new arts and new allies to bring to the battle this time." "And what might the Folstrom have learned in three thousand years?" Ka D'Argos asked. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * ---===DELARQUAN REGIONAL NEWS===--- Duelmasters ----------- DM 1 MORDANT (turn 494): SMEDS of THE BLACK COMPANY (Darkfist, mgr.) I guess I'm better on a random than when I challenge you. Therefore, I'll just hope for a random. Hope you double avoided me! Most women do, you know. 2 Phat, that's why SPY REPORT Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the clash and bustle of the weekly DRAGONHEAD games. Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week VERMIN went 3-1-0 to move up 4 in the rankings. Did only my eyes note the 3-1-0 record which FAVORITE THINGS managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! CANNONBALL caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested 2 PHAT TOO and was awarded 25 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, CANNONBALL put down 2 PHAT TOO, causing him to lose 19 points of recognition in the process. Not for nothing has 2 PHAT in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's proven his combat skill yet again. Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7! Many and various are the arts of battle. In DRAGONHEAD "art" is a word that has long since passed from the language! My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in DRAGONHEAD these days is X-POSSE. At least, most blades in town are looking to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding X-POSSE. Indeed it was FAVORITE THINGS. Mighty fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. CYOLIS take warning! You have more than a few enemies in DRAGONHEAD. Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand ready at your right hand forever! The warrior's path is harsh. For mediocrity there is but one reward--death. This past week TINY TURK, at 7-19-2, departed DRAGONHEAD forever. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! The girls are as pretty in DRAGONHEAD as ever I remembered them....and the fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.-- Zontani Sharp Eyes DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME 2 PHAT 5064 16 3 1 121 VERMIN (165) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -CONSTANTINE 5361 12 4 1 93 AGELESS WONDER (584) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CANNONBALL 5313 7 5 0 88 X-POSSE (579) -LORD EARL GREY 4546 11 11 1 85 FEARSOME LEGENDS (505) -VENTALEN 5288 15 7 1 73 FREELANCERS (576) LITTLE CHAOS 5527 10 10 0 72 ANGELS OF CHAOS (600) 2 PHAT TOO 5063 14 11 1 70 VERMIN (165) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -SNIVELL 9 5382 11 8 0 69 SNIVELLS (585) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME CRIMSON ICE 5529 13 11 1 66 ANGELS OF CHAOS (600) ORPHAN 5463 5 5 1 66 X-POSSE (579) -DUNAUT 5367 10 6 0 64 AGELESS WONDER (584) EARLY MORNING 5522 6 2 0 57 FAVORITE THINGS (599) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -HAFGAN 5355 9 7 1 54 AGELESS WONDER (584) CYOLIS 5311 9 3 1 49 ANCIENT KNIGHTS (507) MONEY 5523 4 5 0 47 FAVORITE THINGS (599) PISTACHIO 5521 6 3 0 44 FAVORITE THINGS (599) -ABBERAN 5280 9 3 2 42 FREELANCERS (576) EAGLE KEYS 4585 8 18 0 42 ANCIENT KNIGHTS (507) -WILLDRAS 5282 10 2 0 41 FREELANCERS (576) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -BETTY BOO 5378 4 2 0 33 SNIVELLS (585) RABID RABBIT 2317 6 5 0 31 VERMIN (165) -ANDERON 5260 7 8 0 29 FEARSOME LEGENDS (505) -CUNNING LUNGUIST 5440 3 2 0 24 SNIVELLS (585) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME DEAD GIRL 5465 6 4 0 22 X-POSSE (579) -ASNEFF 5434 3 3 0 22 AGELESS WONDER (584) GOLLUM 5550 1 0 1 21 ORC EMPIRE (603) VENUS DEE MILO 5720 4 1 0 18 X-POSSE (579) 2 PHAT 2 5470 1 1 0 18 VERMIN (165) BLACKNESS 5744 2 1 0 17 ANGELS OF CHAOS (600) FRIENDLY ORC 5551 1 0 0 16 ORC EMPIRE (603) -DANCE OF DEATH 5771 2 0 0 15 WAR TALISMAN (636) -AKIRA 5353 2 2 0 14 FEARSOME LEGENDS (505) SWEAT BAND 5685 0 2 0 14 FAVORITE THINGS (599) -DARRYL 5640 1 0 0 12 AGELESS WONDER (584) DRAVEN 5726 1 0 1 11 MURDEROUS CROWS (171) -CRONUS DE OMEGUS 5768 1 0 0 11 WAR TALISMAN (636) -NECADEMUS FEADOGNOR 5770 2 1 0 7 WAR TALISMAN (636) -ARTEMI 5515 1 4 0 7 FEARSOME LEGENDS (505) -JACK SPARROW 5700 1 1 1 6 FEARSOME LEGENDS (505) GLYSA 5745 1 2 0 5 ANGELS OF CHAOS (600) -SN2 5517 1 0 0 5 SNIVELLS (585) ARDASHIR 5539 0 5 0 5 ANCIENT KNIGHTS (507) BEST INTENTIONS 5639 0 1 0 1 ARTIC FURY (620) -LACRIMOSA 5772 0 1 0 1 WAR TALISMAN (636) -SN1 5518 0 1 0 1 SNIVELLS (585) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn.
