Notes from the arena champ.
A salute to the departing Carpenter who graduates with a 16-2-1 record. His
numbers are 10-10-9-21-9-14-11, with poor endurance and normal damage doing. The 72
skills he learned gave him Masters in Decise and Riposte, as well as AdExs in Attack
and Initiative. His only non-mode rating so far is Riposte at +4. The commission
relayed reports that he favours the Broadsword (which he never used), with a High /
Moderate rhythm, as well as the lunge-tactic. His preferred learn is attack skills.
Like his namesake, he seems to have developed shoulder problems late in his career,
and despite gaudy numbers and an impressive winning tradition, he will be enjoying an
early retirement. Hopefully he survives the Dark Arena to enjoy it.

Well, what are you looking at, ERINIKA? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Now keep the taverns open late tonight,
for there are sorrows to drown for CALENDAR GIRLS, whose 0-0-0 this turn dropped them
by 5 into 8th. Ha! THE BULLS turned their 2-0-0 turn into a 6th place rank in the
listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm
impressed, a 3-0-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, DUDS, the Fates teach humility, and
the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see DOLT win a fight
and gain 25 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, DOLT beat PUJOLS and PUJOLS lost 12 points.
You're breakin' my heart. And if variety is the spice of life, ERINIKA may be
getting bland, as EDMONDS stays top dog in the city. I'm not in a very good mood
today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you,
ERINIKA?
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. DUDS, I
suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know
who is the most afraid of you? And it looks like WORLDWIDE GORE avoided them the
most this turn. What a pack of would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Ooh, I'm
frightfully impressed, RAEMOND PURR was this turn's most challenged warrior. Watch
that ego swell, sports fans. And we have STINK in a challenge, going down 10 points
for the fight. Guess what? I thought STINK showed great skill and promise when it
bested WILLA VERVET. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. GASHOUSE GANG has cause to pause today, as CARPENTER
was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of moods, I'll
wager. Honor is like a chainmail shirt, it only shines through use. Certain
nameless cowards will doubtless rebuke me on this one.
What does the ERINIKA arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Phlllt! Just had to do that
before I leave the fine city of ERINIKA. I feel much better now. Glad to see the

There was a line outside the Gladiatorial Commission's registry office. There
often was, but surely not now? Alarond the Scribe, who had drawn office duty today,
frowned at them.
A stocky, fit, moderately handsome gladiator stepped up to the counter. "I want a
name-change," he said. "How can I do my best known as," he shuddered, "'Dangling
Eyeball'? My name is Joe, and I want to use it."
A small and very shapely woman stepped up beside him. "And I am really tired of
being known as 'DA Bait'." She smiled, causing Alarond to sway where he stood. "I'd
like to be known as... Aphrodite, I think."
The others crowded forward, each advancing a claim, the babble of voice rising to
a roar, the crowd beginning to look like a mob--and every member of it armed and
dangerous.
Alarond raised his hands to quiet them, without much success. He raised his
voice, too. "We'll do it! A Name-Change-O-Rama, as soon as we can get the paperwork
lined up! Two or three months, maybe--"
The gladiators howled in protest at the delay.
"No, listen! The files here are HUGE, it will take time to get everything
straight. You've got to be patient. It WILL happen!"
