DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
It is a good feeling to have the commission recognize my fighting skills. On that
note I will be departing for the Isle after my next fight. I offer my challenge to
Linus as I depart Jade Mountain as your Duelmaster. I am told that my fighting
skills are best represented with the following numbers. 15-5-10-17-17-9-11 SL. My
favorites are VH/VL HA. I am not sure where my fondness for the hatchet came from as
I have never used it before. I leave here with Masters in Initiative and Attack and
experts in Riposte and decise. It had been a bit of a dry spell for the Dark Toads
in getting a graduating warrior on the throne. It is good to reclaim that tradition.
While it looks unlikely that Aria will ascend to my throne next turn, I do hope
TigToad manages to reclaim the throne I am vacating quickly. In the meantime, I wish
good luck to all of you. Your Duelmaster, Arden
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of JADE MOUNTAIN! Know me for who I am, Zontani
Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team THAT'S US was
unseated this week as MASTERS OF SIN moved up from 6th ranking to take the top spot
with a 5-0-0 record for the round. There were bitter words at DARK TOADS' guildhouse
after a 1-4-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 7th. Dark Arena
anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how
this week MASTERS OF SIN went 5-0-0 to move up 5 in the rankings. Did only my eyes
note the 5-0-0 record which FIFTH QUARTER managed to post this round? I don't doubt
that such a record will draw challengers! JOHN STONE caught the eye of many in the
gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested TALK-TO-DEATH and was awarded 21
points in recognition. Most watched of the fights this week, the spotlight was on
LINUS as he bore arms against the challenge of reigning Duelmaster ARDEN. Not for
nothing has ARDEN in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week
he's proven his combat skill yet again. Would you believe that over half of the old
women in JADE MOUNTAIN seem to feel that they could fight better than you gladiators?
But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades
that is city JADE MOUNTAIN. My inside sources tell me that the team to beat in JADE
MOUNTAIN these days is DREAM MASTERS. At least, most blades in town are looking to
avoid them. Apparently the stalwarts of MASTERS OF SIN are catching the bulk of
jests down at the challenging board for their large share of the avoids. Mighty
fighters cannot but expect competition from those below. WOODY take warning! You
have more than a few enemies in JADE MOUNTAIN. As a gladiator gets older, the icy
grip of fear lays hold of hers heart. True, LYSTRA? Who could miss your "brave"
challenge of GYHARD? Surprising everyone, GYHARD subdued LYSTRA, earning 20 points
of recognition in the process! A knave's just desserts are the sweetest victory. A
match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that GREED posted a
challenge against the more highly recognized FAR SIDE. The results, you ask? Well,
the firebrand GREED beat FAR SIDE. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of
steel. I can not but mention with disdain the name of SLOTH who this week posted a
challenge to a warrior a full 12 points below in the rankings. I thought SLOTH
showed great skill and promise when he bested ARNAL REDAXE. All right, so I slept
through it! Big deal!
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the
miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Sadly warriors, now longer can I keep thy
company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till next we
meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by
the same thing only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Woody -- I will try to keep my chortling to a low giggle in the future. -- Arden
Essina -- When you are done with your sight seeing tour, I suggest you come to Lirin
Kiv. Warriors of your experience would do well there. Besides, fighting is in your
blood now. -- TigToad
P.S. Bring Woody with you when he graduates.
Volto Leeni -- It is so rare for someone of your style to lack sophistication. I,
for one, salute your beans and realize that, for some, any wine will do. -- Anne
Woody -- If you need help with some of the party funds, ask around. There should be
several folks locally that would chip in. -- TigToad
All -- Yes we's back in force, one might say. Due to the Arena closings I've had
Sunday Comics (formerly of Vithicar), and Dream Masters (Mazgourrah,) join Xanth on
da mountain. Glad to be back. It's been far too long of an absence. -- Johnny
Dangerously, Mgr. Xanth, Dream Masters and Sunday Comics
Arnal Redaxe -- Thought I had you there...but I was wrong. -- John Stone
Wrath -- Well, at least I learned well for just standing like a pin cushion. -- Vic
Zamor
Sloth -- I think I'm going to have a friend pay you a visit. -- Shadow Dancer
P'jerin -- STAY AWAY! -- Chun Wei Do
Arden -- Congrats. I guess we can catch the same boat to the Isle. -- Linus
Albannon -- ! ! ! ! ! ! !, ! ! ! !!! !! -- Woodstock
Pride -- They said you'd bring me down.... -- Garfield
Lorana -- Thanks for the welcome. Hopefully I'll be able to stay for a while. --
Johnny Dangerously, mgr. Xanth +
Aria -- (offended look) You only managed to learn two skills? What are you, some
kind of idiot? Weren't you paying attention? What's the POINT of a fight with me if
you don't pay attention to the SKILLS? -- Woody, who lives (more or less) to teach
young toads how to fight
Harpy -- I don't know what Volto was all upset about. I kinda liked the brazen
wings. And when your eyes flared? Gorgeous! -- Tabatan
Tab -- You're weird. Really, really weird. Crazed. You think that THING is
beautiful? -- an astonished and disapproving Volto Leeni
Volto -- (with dignity) To each his own. SOME of us aren't narrow-minded, you know.
-- Tabatan
Anne -- Another toad not paying attention! Don't you REALIZE that we have a special
tactic called Teach Toad, and if you don't learn, Lorana thinks we're falling down on
the job? You don't want to know what she considers a fit punishment for falling down
on the job. -- Treenva Taral
Witch -- Everywhere I look, it's another freakish female. The Commission really
screwed up when they let women enter the arena. You have no standards, and no
RESPECT. Bury ME in the sand? Outrageous! -- Volto Leeni
John Stone -- What does it involve, this dream mastering? I dream of being a proper
Dwarf's height--say about a foot shorter than I am--but it never lasts once I wake
up. But if I could MASTER the dream, maybe it would be real? I'd like to be a
PROPER Dwarf. -- Arnal Redaxe
Arden -- Congratulations on your graduation. -- Essina
Tabatan -- Well, truth be known, it was still a bit sore from trying to nab some
cookies *leer* and getting my hand caught in the jar. -- Gyhard, the none too smooth
with the ladies
Arden -- Hmr, tired of "ardently" admiring you from afar. Budge up, let's share that
throne *wink*. -- P'jerin
Volto -- You know what they say, milk does a body good. -- Bannon
17 July 2004
I am currently trying to put together a favorites chart for AD warriors. I
desperately need help with this. What I need are style, favorite rhythm (ex.:
hi/low), favorite weapons, and tactics. What would be great is if you could send me
a copy of the invite with the warrior's name, id#, and arena blacked out. This way,
I can verify that this is an actual warrior. Minis will work, too!
For those interested, I have both a challenge style vs. style and a match-up style
vs. style chart. There's about 250 fights calculated in these charts, and I'll be
happy to send a copy to anyone who asks. You can contact me (if you're a free world
player) at: Rick Stringer, Merit/East, SCI, P.O. Box 500, Georgetown, DE 19947-0500.
If you're in prison, just send a diplo to: Baphomet, Mgr. Knights Templar (568), DM
#47--North Fork. (I also have a lot of other charts and info for anyone who wants
it.) Thanks!
30 July 2004
The total number of fights calculated was reported as 250 fights. This is a
misprint. It should have read "over 2,500 fights." -- Baphomet
