TEAM SPOTLIGHT
+ ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ A Dark and Stormy Night ]H[ + ---:--- + ]H[ +
It was, the man who called himself Chegarn considered, the perfect night for his
return to the Jade Valley. Cold, windy, dark. Heavy clouds concealed the stars, and
there was a prickling feeling of lightning building up to a strike. He rubbed his
fingertips together and smiled just a little. Since he had left Lirith Kai with its
absurd ban on the practice of magic, he had learned many things that could be done
with lightning. He was looking forward to trying some of them. And darkness...
people looked upon darkness as the simple absence of light. But there was more to
it, if you knew how to look. He had spent the past years learning.
He left the road at a place he knew of, a place with nothing to mark it from the
rest of the roadside except his memory, picked his way across the slant of wet stones
and tangled grasses, and moved into the cover of the trees that grew at the edge of
the valley. The valley was very narrow along here, choked down by what they called
the Jade Gate. In this narrow throat, you would think everything was visible,
nothing hidden...and that was always the best place to look for hidden things. The
beginning of the path was where he remembered it, but more overgrown than it had
been. Good! That meant nobody else had found it while he was gone. He forced his
way through the matted brush and vanished, drawing darkness after him like a cloak.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
Shylock frowned into the darkness. Something had moved there. The person--
whoever it was--that they had been following for miles. Whoever it was, he was gone
now.
Beside him, Essina shivered. "I don't see why we couldn't have caught up with
that other fellow," she said. "I would have liked more company. This road is so...
creepy tonight! It never was before."
"The 'other fellow' was the core of the creepiness," Shylock said. "He was
using magic to hide himself--"
Essina shivered again. "Creepy. And besides, he wasn't hidden. Not
completely. We could tell he was there."
"But not who he was." The Dark Toad shook himself, just as the sky opened and
poured rain down on them. Shylock could have used magic to keep the rain off, he was
a wizard of some skill. But they were close to Jade Mountain now, and there would be
priests of Mantor, probably magic-sniffers, in the town. And even if they noticed
nothing, there was always Arenamaster Lord Kendar, curse him. Nothing got past
Kendar in the Jade Valley. Which could mean that Kendar had spotted the man they had
followed, too. Well, they could always hope so. A man who went to that length to
conceal his arrival was up to no good, and so likely to be in the way when Shylock
began to unfold his own plans.
*** ***** *** ***** ***
The gladiatress Witch looked up at the lightning-webbed sky and frowned.
"Something is happening," she said. "Look at the way the lightning is being pulled
all toward one area--that isn't natural."
Arnal Redaxe, her escort for the evening, squinted upward also. "It's just a
freak," he said. "If we were underground, we wouldn't even notice."
Witch snorted laughter and looked up at her companion. It was hard to think of
the six-foot-two gladiator as a Dwarf, even with his beard and his battleaxe. No
doubt that was why he'd left his home, wherever it was, but one didn't ask. Entering
the arena, you started fresh. No past, unless you wanted to mention it. Arnal
hadn't mentioned anything. "Trust me," Witch said, "there's more than a freak of
nature going on up there." She crammed her hat more tightly on her head and hitched
up her skirts. "Let's go find out what!"
"You mean...pry into someone else's business? Meddle?"
"Only if it's something interesting." She looked up at her companion again.
Arnal looked...upset. Didn't Dwarves meddle in each other's business? How boring!
"Or something that might be a danger for the town."
"Oh...right. A danger for the town--we should look into THAT."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
P'Jerin, I am glad it was me you fought--and lost to--rather than Woody. He
wouldn't have known what to do with a win, and as for being the Duel2Dude, he hasn't
got a clue. I wouldn't want you to think I don't LIKE Woody, you understand, but
he's, uh, not the brightest candle around. I am MUCH more suited to this position.
Which someone will probably take away from me right off, but drinks at the
Keystone tonight, anyway.

SPY REPORT
Greetings, warriors of JADE MOUNTAIN! Once again I've been called out of
retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Hmmmph! I always
thought EXPERIMENTAL was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 2-3-0! Ya
gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust! Block out the
pain! SUNDAY COMICS is now ranked 6th with a 2-3-0 turn. FIFTH QUARTER showed JADE
MOUNTAIN what they were made of as they fought with a vengeance to walk off with
4-1-0. What's with MOCKINGBIRD? She actually beat THAT'S US' WANTON, and walked
away with 16 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at DARK TOADS while they
watched MOCKINGBIRD clobber WANTON. He lost 11 points and got bruised from objects
thrown from the stands. Another fighter (WONDERFUL 9-3-1) challenged another
Duelmaster (TABATAN 16-8-0). Life goes on. Try as he might, WONDERFUL wasn't good
enough at persuading TABATAN to step down from the Duelmaster's throne... Advice to
fighters with a 1 will--give up fighting!
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... JADE MOUNTAIN thinks
HOGWARTS EXPRESS and their 7-8-1 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give
up... In my day, no team with a 5-5-1 would scare me off! What's the problem,
EXPERIMENTAL? How well I know the feeling of being the most challenged warrior,
TREENVA TARAL! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt you. P'JERIN
didn't quite know what to make of a challenge he received from ANDY CAPP of SUNDAY
COMICS, who is 22 points below him. ANDY CAPP perhaps got his just desserts, seeing
as he was overcame by P'JERIN and ended up with 71 recognition points.
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Sending a warrior to the Dark Arena reminds the others they'd
better shape up. Tough beans, LYSTRA. That's what a 5-9-0 gets you. Here's some
advice: study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty.
Who knows what the future holds for a warrior. More fights, there's no doubt.
JADE MOUNTAIN is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places.
Remember--a good fighter needs both good skills and good luck. Until next time,--
Olaf Modeen

Samsara -- That's odd, I thought you were just illusion...and then you hit me! Ouch.
I've never been beaten up by an illusion before. -- Volto Leeni
P.S. I thought at first you were a Sara, and, okay, maybe I was a little, uh,
forward? But you didn't have to hit me THAT hard, Sam.
Witch -- Dammit, I wasn't DONE with those ribs! Everybody beats me up! I hate that,
I just HATE it! Just you WAIT, I'll have my REVENGE! -- Woody, near tears
Annice -- At least you were polite. I can stand a lot if my opponent's polite. --
Treenva Taral
P.S. But what's the deal with me making brilliant and masterful parries, and you
STILL winning? Once I start doing brilliant, masterful parries, you're supposed to
just give up and SURRENDER, you know.
Padfoot -- It's your red hair. I've got a soft spot for anybody with red hair. Real
problem, too, sometimes, but at least there aren't a LOT of Harkenes here. -- Arnal

P'Jerin -- You could have tried harder to reach me! -- Woody
All -- This is an open storyline, and I am going to make a serious effort to write
something regularly here. It is a Jade Mountain-only storyline, linking with nobody
else, and it might go anywhere. Feel free to jump in and write stuff on it, spin off
it, or simply volunteer warriors for it.
Any warriors who have fought a Sand Dancer in the last couple of months should
consider themselves on "could be drafted" status; if you don't want to risk showing
up in print, say so! Manager personas will not be introduced to the story without

Suggestions are always welcome. Send 'em to Livia@reality.com, or write a
