                                       Yokai

Late one evening a mysterious woman was riding a horse as fast as she could get
the horse to run. Coming down from the Trier Coast heading South and West. The
horse was lathered, as if it had been running for days, which it had; it was near to
dying and would not be the first horse she'd ridden to death in her flight. The
woman had escaped from a cell in Kati-Tei three weeks before. She had been sentenced
to death, by beheading, for heinous crimes. She managed to escape and steal a horse
and ride hard to the coast of Alastari north of Point. There she'd hired, or stolen,
a small boat with a crew of two and persuaded them to sail her across the Trier Sea
to Lirith Kai. A week, that had taken; she thought it had been a week. Dal Shang,
and another horse stolen. How far would the Convincians chase her? She and this
horse had been running ever since. Three more days. Every day she survived was a
gift, but she wanted to be free and clear of pursuit. Would the Adantri join the
hunt?
While she had been traveling, she had decided to find a gladiatorial team to
join. As she stopped in Liho An-Min late that night to eat and drink, she overheard
a conversation; a man at the bar, say that, "the Flesh Renders Nitch" looking for
fighters to start a new team. The woman got up and left, just a few momments before
the city guard swarmmed the tavern. They were chasing her still, she was sure of it.
The woman took a chance on stealing another horse; there was not much "run" left in
that one. Why were all these towns walled? The Alastarian towns she knew had not
been. But she slipped into the tail of a line of wagons leaving and out through the
gate in their company. The slow pace was a worry and an aggravation, but she held
herself to it until the city was out of sight behind her. Then she pushed this new
horse to its best speed.
The woman's hair was covered by a black fedora, which was a little large on her
and covered part of her eyes. Her red trench coat was of the finest material, warm
and sturdy. She knew it was conspicuous, but she needed that warmth; there was two
feet of snow on the ground. As she passed to the town of Niming on the Great West
Route, a merchant recognized her. He called out to her, "Lady Carmen, please wait!"
Carmen stopped and saw the pudgy little man as he jumped off the cart he manned
alone. There was no one to be seen for miles, they were alone. He ran up to her,
stopping as his bulbous nose met the tip of a sword. "Please my lady," he quickly
said, "I mean you no harm only to help."
"Gravel Axehand, I'm in a hurry." Carmen said.
"I know and this will help," the pudgy man said as he opened his had to reveal a
cube. "Think of where you want to go and then eat it. You will be there instantly."
"So this is how you escaped all these years."
The man smiled and handed her the cube. Carmen thought of where she wanted to
go and ate the cube. When she opened her eyes, she was outside an old tavern, a sign
over the door reading "Flesh Renders Nitch."
She looked around and saw the street was empty. Well, it was still night, and
in this place the snow was deeper still and the wind colder. Good, she thought, no
witnesses. She walked to the door and opened it. Inside were an assortment of
humanoids. Others would be scared of what they saw inside, she wasn't fazed, she'd
done business with all kinds of "people." She walked to the bar and asked, "Is there
a manager here looking for warriors to make a new team?"
The Orc bartender turned, a mug in one hand and a cleaning rag in the other,
"Ya, back corner, in the shadows," he grunted.
Carmen stuck her hands in her pockets as she walked to the table. She pulled a
piece of parchment from her pocket, "A favor for a favor. I am paid off." It was
signed "Gravel Axe." Carmen smiled, put her hand back in her pocket, and continued
to the table in the shadowy corner.
She reached the table and saw a strange man in a black robe, the only part of
him she could see was his bi-colored eyes, glowing like candles in the dark. *he,
he, he* "Welcome, Carmen Sandiego. We have been waiting for you. I am Tenmei."
"How did you know my name and that I was coming?"
"It's a gift of mine. *he,he,he* I accept you as a member of my team." The
other four fighters sat around the table. A female vampire named Koko, a big crow-
like man-bird named Haiji, a Mirani woman named Kurumu, and what looked like a
werewolf named Ginnei. (Ginnei stated that he was in fact a coyote, much better
looking than his kin.)
The four fighters stared back at Carmen, wondering if this Kraellin woman in the
red trench coat, eyes covered by the fedora, with long black curly hair to her waist,
could handle fighting in the arena.
Haiji, the crow, said, "She looks like she can handle herself."
*he,he,he* "She would not be here if she couldn't," said Tenmei. "Now all of
you get some rest, for tomorrow we go to Jade Mountain and the arena."
The next day Tenmei gathered them all together and started moving his hands and
mumbling, a few seconds later a large strange symbol of light appeared under them.
*he,he,he* "Don't be afraid, it is our way of travel. We will appear in our stable,
we don't have to walk there."
As he stated this, the symbol began to rise. First their feet vanished, then
they legs, mid-sections, arms, shoulders and heads. As the light cleared from their
eyes, they saw they were in a large pavilion filled with weapons and armor.
"This is where you will train and stay bwtween fights. *he,he,he* I am you
manager, Tenmei, and I expect to see the very best out of you. If not, I will send
you to the dark arena. So, do me proud." *he,he,he*
The next day the fighters stepped onto the sands for the first time, in front of
the waiting crowd.

                                      SPY REPORT

I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. JADE MOUNTAIN needs a spyreport." Oh, well. Too bad,
APOKOLIPS, but SAND DANCERS was just too good to be stopped. I talked to YOKAI's
manager before the fights. He said, "We're gonna do good." And look at this:
4-1-0! Psychic, or what! MVP award for GINNEI? YOKAI's proud of him after beating
TALK-TO-DEATH and getting 20 points. Talk about yer major upsets! HOUND ARCHON's
match with HAN KANG cost him a loss of 16 points! Was that a tear I saw in MURDEROUS
THRUST's eye, as he took over Duelmastership? And wasn't THE HAPPY F fit to be tied!
Is the Duelmaster really being a real snob to his teammates? Don't ask me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? The warriors of CRITICALS must be getting lonely.
They were the most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? I don't
know what BAD HANDWRITING!'s been doing. They certainly haven't been accepting many
fights from CRITICALS, that's fer sher.
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys
can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. I had a fun
time, see you later-- Debby Tonte
