Black Tom raised his eyebrows. Not a human scream. He would know. Some kind
of animal, maybe. A cat? Maybe. Surprising how loud a cat could be. A cat might
scream for any damn dumb reason, they did that. Or it might scream because something
surprised it. Like maybe the thing he was hunting here. Which would mean the thing
was over that way, where the scream came from.
He looked into the snow-shot darkness. It seemed darker, though the snow was
almost luminous. A landscape in black and white. A maze of aisles, broad and
narrow, between the stacked timbers.
Or it might not be a cat. He wasn't chasing a cat. The shadow he'd glimpsed
was man-sized and more or less upright, though the tracks did not seem quite right
for a man. What he could see of the tracks after the snow got through with them.
A monster of some kind, that was his guess. You heard a lot of stories about
strange things in the forest up here. Chasing a monster began to seem like a bad
idea. Maybe he should quit for the night, go back to the guildhouse.
He turned around to go back.
And there it was.

changing loyalties, changing Duelmasters. Write this down: new top team--J. J had
cause to celebrate, after THE COUNT got 14 points by beating DELNA BERIN. Win some,
lose some. Speaking of which, THE COUNT was winsome, after beating DELNA BERIN and
seeing her lose 11 points. Those who hoped for a new Duelmaster were disappointed by
HARNIE BLACK, of SAND DANCERS, who despite a 10-7-0 couldn't overcome LIN TIRIAN's
Number 1. So who's the team that's been walking into taverns last week and ordering
milk? Sounds like a PR stunt to me.
