Sherman Prepares For Elephest: a.k.a. A Preposterous Pep Rally
[Citizens of Shadowspire, let me tell to you a tale, and in the process expose
to you the unknowable. The inner-workings of the mind of Sherman, manager of
Literate Loons stable. The life of a manager is slightly less than difficult at
best, somewhat knotty at worst. The triumphs, the tribulations, the seemingly
glorious victories which allow a manager to stand proudly at a urinal one turn, can
change, in an instant, to exaggerated fake humming and a turning on of the faucet the
next. But who of you out there has ever really understood the mind of a manager?
The complex strategies, the thoughtful considerations, the brilliant worldly wealth
of knowledge that no mere devotee could ever hope to understand! But I can lead you,
dear friends, into the darkest of managerial minds. Into a place so bleak, but true,
that even the most ruthless killing machine amongst you will turn their head in fear!
Let's listen shall we, as Sherman prepares his team for Elephest 2007....]
"Hey, hey, yeah, you! The one with the lousy record. What's his name again?
Oh, yeah, Chesterton. Sit your bloated Barry Bonds lookin head down already will ya.
I got an important message here. Who am I kiddin, as if anything were more important
than my paycheck you wastrels are dwindling away every turn with your lousy record.
Anyways, apparently Elephest 2007's coming to Shadowspire, so we've got to find some
sort of clever angle in order to win the thing. Why do you care? You care cuz I'm
tellin ya to care ya pathetic bunny-hoppin blunders! And I'm the only one here that
matters, got that? This isn't a democracy, it's not even an oligarchy. This's about
the divine right of kings, you worthless wastrels, and I'm the King! I demand, no,
make that I order, and you cringing cretins obey. End of story. If I cared about
other people's opinions I would've become a social worker, or a suburban home owner.
But I'm not, I'm a manager and my word's the [bleep]. So all of you, relax, exhale,
and turn your dinky brains to the task at hand. Elephest 2007, thoughts, ideas, talk
amongst yourselves...."
[The stablemates cower in a huddle, murmuring important notions. 'If God was
truly peace and love, why do hate and evil exist? Why are humourless people always
described as dignified, and dignified people always described as arrogant? When is
it appropriate to hand a halitosis sufferer breath mints? Which of the Jessicas has
the sexiest, stupid, over the shoulder smile? Would a sexually frustrated myopic man
suffer from pinballs?' Slowly, a consensus begins to emerge, hesitantly, a hand
rises.]
"Yeah, uh, you, the wannabe poet with the filthy name, what'd ya come up with?"
[e.e. cummings slowly rises, clears his throat and speaks.] "A poem, my liege,
of love and admiration, I pray you listen and understand the devotion of your loyal
followers." [e.e. cummings begins to recite in Sherman's voice.]
"From my throne on a porcelain john,
I'm afraid I am put to the test,
Better to finish reading my paper,
Or contribute to Elephest.
Here I am at the top of the world,
Though my pants are below my knees,
If my feet were to brush another's,
Would I be considered a tease?
But why worry bout appearances,
When the truth is beneath a stall,
To position myself correctly,
I'm afraid I would have to crawl.
I will label myself as I am,
A moral man from Idaho,
Thankfully I can keep to myself,
Things all citizens need not know.
Now I'll manage my team correctly,
Say goodbye to my pervy rant,
And no matter who wins tomorrow,

[e.e.cummings bows somberly and taps Sherman on the shoulder, awakening him from
a deep snooze.]
"Uh, yeah, great kid, I'll take it. Never could stomach that poetry slop, ya
know, meant for eggheads and the effeminate type, if ya know what I mean. But that
sounded just right to me. Deliver it, and pick me up some truffles on the way back
will ya...."

ELEPHEST LOOMING
As told by Pauly of Ale House Mercs
Sitting in his customary booth at the Gringolet Lounge, Pauly's mind swirled
with all the things that he had had to deal with lately. One of the more pressing
issues being what had transpired on his journey to Shadowspire mountain. A riveting
story, to be sure, but one he had found himself unable to tell. It was just still
too soon. Then of course there was the matter of the monkey who had been managing
his team in his absence. There were many things about that that bothered Pauly, the
most significant being that the monkey had been doing a better job than he had. All
this and more raced through his head, but with a big gulp from his mug, Pauly pushed
it all to the background. There were more important things to occupy his mind today.
He took another swig of ale and looked down at the flyer he had been handed as he had
walked into the lounge:

As Pauly read the flyer for the second time, all of his worries washed away. A
Bitchin' time with drinks and circus midgets? How could anyone worry about anything
with that only a week away? Pauly wondered if his father had heard the news. He'd
most likely set up a Scrodbucks booth. Indimar would do anything to earn a buck.
And if you asked Pauly, he'd probably confirm that he did mean anything. Pauly
quickly finished the rest of his ale and slammed the mug down, excitement spreading
in his eyes. He threw down some coin and looked over at the monkey sitting across
from him. "Alright Maurice, let's go," said Pauly, "If we're gonna make Elephest
2007 a memorable one, we've got some work to do." And with that, Pauly stood up,
Maurice hopped on his back, they exited the Gringolet Lounge, and the world was never
the same-- well, not at that exact moment, but very soon.

JGW looked down from his private balcony as Pauly and his new brain trust left
his establishment. All he could do was shake his head and hope that someday Pauly
would get professional help. JGW pushed that thought aside though. After all, it

Greetings Shadowspire!
It's me, your five time Duelmaster. It's a great honor to be here again. Ha
Thrust, that's three times now. I felt you gave me the best chance of winning each
time and that's why my challenges went to you. My challenge this turn goes to my
friend and former Duelmaster Mouse of Pain.
My memento this turn for the throne room is the DVD "Son of the Beach, Season
1." My codex entry is from Desmond Tutu -- "If you are neutral in situations of
injustice, you have chosen the side of the oppressor. If an elephant has its foot on
the tail of a mouse and you say that you are neutral, the mouse will not appreciate
your neutrality."

SPY REPORT
It's me, The Unknown Spymaster, back to give you this week's Spy Report. Sit
back in your seats and we'll have more fun than a barrel of Zontanis. Rising in the
ranks like a loaf of armored bread (okay, I admit it's corny) is BATTLE GRUNTS, who
swept up 15 places in the ranks. Take a look at AMERICAN MUSCLE's act, as they have
a 4-1-0 week and gain 13 places in the team ranking. Rising in the ranks like a loaf
of armored bread (okay, I admit it's corny) is BLADE MAGES, who swept up 14 places in
the ranks. What goes up, must come down. Watch out SHADOWSPIRE! KELLUMBO'S KIDS
may fall on you as it crushes past the teams below it to fall on the 16th spot.
Suffering under a 1-4-0 record and dropping from 4th to 17th place were the BIG LAKE
OUTCASTS. Keep trying! A seasoned team is steady in the lists. But to ERRATA,
which fell to 21st, it's what you soak in before going to the Dark Arena. Advancing
in the rankings was FUCHI OWNED who went from last turn's 39-41-1, to this week's
record of 43-42-2. Hey everybody, watch out for KREK, who flew up 29 points in the
rankings after mashing BURM WOLFSNARL like a melon. Keep your eye on this guy. And
falling like a basher in the top ten was BURM WOLFSNARL, who dropped 26 points after
a disappointing (to say the least) bout with KREK. Well here's a duelmaster that
doesn't sit back and say 'Challenge me'! '76 GRAN TORINO made a challenge against
MOUSE OF PAIN this week. Going for the gusto and coming up with aught but bloody
knuckles was RODENT CLAN's MOUSE OF PAIN, who was turned away from the Duelmastership
by '76 GRAN TORINO. An apple a day keeps the doctor away, but an onion a day keeps
T.P.s at bay.
But enough of that bunch, let's get on to the wimps who like to avoid battle!
Did you hear that KELLUMBO'S KIDS was most avoided team this week? Well, knowing the
personal hygiene of KELLUMBO'S KIDS' warriors, I'm not surprised! And you guys like
to boo me? Well, unsling your rasberries, cause CLAN LONGBEARD beats feet every time
KELLUMBO'S KIDS smiles at them. Try farming, eh? Well dang howdy, but if challenges
were votes, SNAKE EYES would be president. Although it may be a contest he doesn't
want to win. Challenging down 22 points was DEANA. Pretty soon she'll be using two
shields and selling 'T.P.: The only way to clean up' pins. Here is a definition of
happiness: CHAUCER won victory over DEANA to go from 42 to 61 recognition points.
Getting lots of flowers from sympathetic fans was SPONGE BATH, who was successfully
challenged by KIRI FACADE who had a mere 20 points more than SPONGE BATH. Definition
of petty: KIRI FACADE beat SPONGE BATH, a mismatch of 20 points. Was it guts or an
overtaxed mental capacity that had QUIGLEY challenge up 29 points in the rankings to
take on WONDER WOMAN? Trading many whacks on the head and a loss for 2 recognition
points, QUIGLEY shows that a guy doesn't have to be good to get places. In a
touching display by a 'touched' warrior, '69 MUSTANG BOSS went after COPERNICUS, who
was higher by 25 points. Well, when the dust settled, '69 MUSTANG BOSS was overcame
by COPERNICUS.
Being a spy is great--other people die and you spend the rest of the day
drinking to their memory. Better tanked than dead! NUYEN NICK defied all odds and
slew SPYMASTER in the Dark Arena. The only ones displeased were the buzzards, as
SPYMASTER's meat is notoriously tough. This week 7-12-0 TCHARLZ was sent to the Dark
Arena. I know a lot of fighters with similar records who might take notice of this.
Carrion Bird Heaven: NITRO PILLS was killed by IMPORT-EXPORT (The true definition of
'Street Pizza'). In the 'Oops, What Have I Done?' category, DOWNTOWN BROWN was
mashed by GRON DA CAVEMAN, who let DOWNTOWN BROWN know that killing members of
DRAGONBANE GUILD is a no-no. Remember: alliances are great, but try and take your
ally in the arena with you and see what happens.
I think I had better cut this one short. It's been nice chatting to those of
you whom I have not offended yet. Okay, so I may not be the world's best comedian,
but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Its been real, and its been fun,

15 managers have announced for the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse!!!!!! There is still
time to join and make a name for yourself in one of Alastari's fiercest contests! I
must correct a mistake in the previous announcement. I incorrectly called it the
Slaughterhouse 2, but in reality, this will be the third installment of the
Slaughterhouse!
HOW TO JOIN
*Find a Partner
*Declare your intentions in the Stormcrowe newsletter to enter before the first turn
of the contest. You may also email or diplo Master Darque.
*Each manager entering the Stormcrowe Slaughterhouse must submit one (1) Team Roll-Up
Certificate. Only certificates will be accepted for entry. All certificates
submitted will be used during the course of the contest as prizes.
*RU certificates must be received on or before the first turn of the contest which is
Stormcrowe Turn 263 (running approximately November 27, 2007).
RULES and SCORING
Rules and Scoring information for the Slaughterhouse will be posted every turn in the
Stormcrowe newsletter beginning with Turn 260 and in a final all arena ad in
November.
PRIZES
ENDURANCE AWARD: One (1) +1 Bonus Potion will be given to every team that competes
in 60 of the 65 contest fights.
KILL MASTER AWARD: The individual manager with the most kills will receive a Limited
Immortality Potion. This potion may be applied to one (1) warrior. He/she will be
resurrected ONE-TIME if they are killed in Basic D2.
TOP TEAM AWARD: Each manager on the winning team will receive the following prize
pack for their Slaughterhouse Dominance:
*One (1) +1 Bonus Potion
*Favorites Knowledge for one (1) Warrior
*Undisclosed amount of Team RU Certificates
Special note from RSI on prizes: All contest prizes must be used within three
months. All contest prizes may only be used on a living warrior on the participating
contest team in DM 45. The immortality potion may resurrect a warrior one time,
after a death in DM 45 only, after which time the potion disappears.

Ok, ok, you can stop not-talking about TOGS VI already, it is coming, slowly but
surely, like a giant, over-fed, greased slug sliding down a gravely driveway. We're
looking for new-comers, old-timers, in-betweeners, fence-sitters and Delarquans to
come on out and participate. Just think, you could be the next Pinky & the Brain
pairing (a la Creepster & Manager), or maybe you'll be the team that crushes all in
its path on the way TO UTTER AND COMPLETE TOGS DOMINATION!!!!!! [note: insert
sinister cackle if it helps you complete the picture]
There will be a few minor changes, so let's recap the rules from top to bottom:
1. Each TOGS team consists of two managers. After the contest starts, there will be
no switching partners whatsoever, so choose your teammate wisely. TOGS VI will last
for 13 turns, so pick a partner you can stand for 6 months or so.
2. The TOGS entry fee is 2 team setups per manager. This means 4 setups per TOGS
team. This entry fee is required before the start of the tourney with no exceptions
being made. This is to ensure that nobody gets screwed if a team or manager decides
to back out early. To pay the entry fee either:
a) send $10 cash/check/money order/ or whatever to me personally at:

b) get RSI to send me 2 team setup gift certificates. Sorry, no credit cards
and no old teams you have lying around will be accepted.
3. TOGS point system:
Fights:
10 points for winning on your up-challenge against another TOGS warrior.
7 points for winning on your even challenge of another TOGS warrior.
7 points for winning on another TOGS warriors challenge.
7 points for winning a random match-up against another TOGS warrior.
4 points for winning on your down-challenge of another TOGS warrior.
4 points for winning a random match-up against a non-TOGS warrior.
Changes this TOGS:
** 10 points for any challenge by the DM, UP OR DOWN!!
** 4 points for winning a random match-up against your TOGS partner's warrior.
To state the obvious, there are 0 points if you challenge your partner.
** 4 points for winning a bloodfeud attempt against you by a non-TOGS warrior
You will not get any points if you challenge or get challenged by a non-TOGS team
(with the exception of the above-stated rule if you get bloodfeuded), so use your
avoids wisely if you think someone is out to get you.
Spots/Ads
5 points for every spotlight written by any team member. 1 per manager per turn.
The minimum length of a spotlight to receive points is 1/2 column in the newsletter
(that's 31 lines-each line 85 characters across) and we will be completely firm on
this. In addition to the length criteria, spotlights will not be given points if
they are in any way plagiarized or if they are not Duelmasters or fantasy related.
We will be the sole judge of this. If you're unsure if we will judge something to be
Duelmasters or fantasy related, then e-mail me before you write the spotlight and
ask. We reserve the right to take points away from a spotlight after they are given
if we judge at later time that the spotlight has been plagiarized.
-5 points per manager per turn every time a manager does not at least write one
personal ad.
4. TOGS VI will start in arena 60 shortly after the Winter Face-to-Face (turn due
Feb 21, Aradi turn 436) and as mentioned before will last for 13 turns. There will
be multipliers in the later rounds, which means that all points accumulated by a team
on turns 10 and 11 will be multiplied by 1.5 and all points accumulated by each team
on turns 12 and 13 will be multiplied by 2.
5. Soultaker and Nuln will be the sole arbiters of any dispute that may arise, with
props to Sentinel for doing the score-keeping as always. Whine all you like, we will
be glad to provide comfortable chairs and the cheese of your choice.
And there be the rules. If you look closely, you'll notice there were a few minor
changes and additions made from the TOGS V rules. They are as follows:
-- The Snotman & Nuln rule: Last TOGS Snotman and Nuln randomly matched up something
like 4-5 times, so we basically decided out of pity to now give a small amount of
points (4 in this case) for winning a random against a teammate, so that you're not
completely screwed by having 2 of your 10 warriors get 0 zero points automatically.
-- Scaling Down Points for the DM: Previously a TOGS DM would get 10 points *in
addition* to whatever challenge points they got. This was to keep the DM from being
penalized for being at the top and give people something to fight for. However, it
was a bit too much of an award and we decided to scale it back and eliminate the
bonus, but give full upchallenge credit whenever the DM challenges.
-- Bloodfeuds from outside TOGS teams: This incident came up last TOGS, and it was
felt that if a person killed a non-TOGS warrior in a random, they shouldn't have to
be potentially locked into 4 turns of getting 0 points. So we've added an additional
rule which now gives 4 points if you win when bloodfeuded by a non-TOGS warrior, at
least giving you some way to get points if you're locked into a non-TOGS bloodfeud
instead of being basically removed from the contest for 4 turns.
And lastly...
-- Team Names: This was not listed in the rules, but to make things more festive, at
the suggestion of Manager we have decided to have the added dimension of team names!
Yes, no more boring rankings with Team 4 edging out Team 7. Just picture reading a
TOGS turn report now, with something along the lines of "Team Fiery Starfish
obliterated Team Superior TOGSlings," just as one example.
