THE UNGRATEFUL DEAD
The SYP recognizes that Shadowspire is a deadly arena! Every time a warrior
steps out onto the sands it could be his last. We do not begrudge this fact, we love
it! However, we are not without some sympathy here at the SYP. As such, we thought
that we would review those promising warriors that left us too soon.
This article isn't dedicated to those puds that should have seen the torch light
early in their career! No! This article is for those rising stars who were struck
down in their in the thralls of arena domination!

It appears that Celedraug will hold the record for a while with 41 FE. Most of
the warriors on this list hold a losing record, but the two of note are those with
winning records. It goes to show you can't die if you don't lose!

As the sun retires after yet another uneventful day, something stirs in the gut
of the grizzled old traveler.
"I do not wish go gently into the next life," he says to no-one in particular as
he watches the sun's last remaining evidence of existence disappear over the horizon.
"Ben."
He heard it and turned around, scanned every nook and cranny, every possible
shadow for possible movement or sign of who could have said it. Where did it come
from. He can't pinpoint exactly where it came from. Is it his imagination? No.
Someone is here, he can feel it deep in his bones, and it feels cold.
"Oh crap!"
The traveler darts into a full sprint to anywhere that wasn't here. He must
have run for a good 5 minutes (30 sec). Surely he lost whoever it was.
"Ben."
"Who's there? Show yourself," tense and unsure he will survive this night he
steps out of the shadows to face his tormentor.
"We do not mean you any harm."
"We, (oh crap), who are 'we' and what do 'we' want?"
The shadows expand and release their prisoners, that was the best way to explain
what he saw. It looked so painful for them to come out of the shadows (it wasn't
until later that the pain was from the underworld to which they will always be
connected). "We need you."
"O.K., for what?" he asks carefully.
"We need you to be our connection with your world."
"I don't understand."
"We cannot exist for long periods of time in your world without a...a host to
keep the link open."
"A host. A host. I don't like the sound of that...(oh crap)." The traveler
bolts for a second time praying to the gods he doesn't really believe in to help save
his poor soul and promising to give all he has if they only let him live this night.
The shadows just explode with darkness and the force of the explosion knocks him
to the ground.
"We are not asking for your permission, you will be our...host. Your life is
ending. If we do not link to you, you will die and you will be with We any way.
With the link with We, you will be kept alive in this world and We will be able to
travel in this world unhindered as long as We are within close proximity of the
host."
Scrambling to his feet the traveler bolts a third time (which of course isn't a
charm) and turns a corner and runs head fast into We's awaiting embrace. The pain is
excruciating for as long as it lasted. Luckily the traveler passes out from the
pain.
"Ben."
"Ben."
"Ben," head pounding the traveler opens his eyes and sees the most beautiful
creatures he has ever seen, "you will survive now. We have 'linked', you are now the
host."
"Great...now what?"
"We need to find souls to feed to the Master, We must find and kill the souls'
host so that We can feed them to Master. That's where you come in. Gentleben, you
are now the manager of Unholy Knights warriors of Him."
"Where are we?"
"We and you are here," with arms stretched wide, "Shadowspire!"
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
The Shadowspire Times decided to do a feature story on the arenas in Shadowspire
and a reporter sat interviewing the current Dulemaster Angus of Clan Longbeard.
So Angus what took you so long to reach the top?
There are several reasons. One is the competition here is impressive. Secondly,
my training has been unusually unfocused. For some reason I keep learning Parry
skills, which does me little good and finally I have had some poor luck in a few
fights.
Since you received your invite from the commission as well, are you going to
travel too the Isle?
Well too be honest I have tired of this gladiator stuff, so I am going to
retire.
Since you are retiring, how about a little more in depth information about
yourself as a gladiator.
Sure, my invite notice from the GC reported these numbers 9(1)-12-13-17(1)-
15(1)-11-11(1). It said I favor the Scimitar, which I agree with, but they say I
favor a Mod/Low rhythm. While that maybe be great versus scums, it would get me
killed against offensives. They also say I tend focus on Parry skills, like I didn't
already know that. DUH!
Grimm chuckles at the response, before both hear chanting from outside. The both
looked at each other puzzled and go look out the window. There they see a group of
people protesting in front of the Commission office. Grimm and Angus quickly head
outside.
Once outside they see a young man is addressing the group protesting.
We have a serious problem here in Shadowspire, Golems are everywhere! Ever since
the Commission opened the arena here our city has been overrun by these beasts.
How many of you have had a meal interrupted because of the foul stench that
emanates from them?
Most of them are also hideously ugly and about as smart as a box of rocks.
Take a stand with me citizens of Shadowspire and lets take back our city and rid
it of the the Golem menace.

Angus looks to Grimm and shrugs, "They do have a point. Over half my fights were
against a Golem, including my title fight."
The reporter's eyes widen realizing an even better story has just fallen into
his lap. "Sorry Angus I have to go."
SPY REPORT
Much has changed in SHADOWSPIRE since last I was here. Never fear, Olaf Modeen
adapts to many situations, as do all successful fighters. Who can explain it? Not
you, not me, not KELLUMBO'S KIDS' opponents, after watching them shoot up the ranks
from 19th to 4th. You know what they say about the herd of lions who studied a
judge... GOONSWARM moved up 15 places, to 8th. DRAGONBANE GUILD bit the big one as
they could not win. They dropped from 2nd down to 14th! Are you guy giving lessons
or what? Ever take one of those association tests? You know, he says black, you say
white. Water-Lake, Sky-Blue. Try this: Flop. RODENT CLAN! What's with GRATH? He
actually beat BATTLE GRUNTS' HORSE, and walked away with 22 more points from the
fight. Laughs were big at FURRY FURY while they watched FURIOUS FOX clobber ANGEL
HEART. She lost 19 points and got bruised from objects thrown from the stands.
DEXTER was reminded on the sands why ANGUS is Duelmaster. Wouldn't it be nice to
have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is looking into the uses of
convicted prisoners.
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. The most avoided team was OF
WOLF AND MAN. Management must be dealin', as the boys at LA PENTARCHIE ain't
reelin'! OF WOLF AND MAN's mad! How well I know the feeling of being the most
challenged warrior, GUTENBERG! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to haunt
you. XINU of CULT OF BACCHUS knows how to pick 'em. He challenged TYRA of
KELLUMBO'S KIDS who is up by 24. Now was this a wise move? XINU perhaps got his
just desserts, seeing as he was overcame by TYRA and ended up with 66 recognition
points. I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that
NIGHTBANE gets in. It fights people like FALSE TEETH, 14 points below. I thought
NIGHTBANE showed great skill and promise when it bested FALSE TEETH. All right, so I
slept through it! Big deal!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? ONYX looked pretty sick and surprised when she learned FUCHI
OWNED is sending her to the Dark Arena! Whadd'she expect with a 18-17-0? RHINO of
BATTLE GRUNTS didn't know when to quit. When you've got a 4-5-0, that's a good sign.
Now he's dead. WILHELM was plum wore out after IMPORT-EXPORT pounded 'im silly in a
Bloodfeud. WARMASTERS'll have to get a little better before going after
IMPORT-EXPORT again! How long have I been here? I got people to see, places to
go...
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here?
SHADOWSPIRE is a nice place to live, but I don't like to live in nice places.

*TURF WAR VI RULES*
Starting Nov 2008 (10 turns)
Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances created solely to compete in the Turf War! To participate, each alliance must:
1. Announce the alliance and the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork
(DM 47) newsletter.
2. Announcements made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
Captains are responsible for:
1. Verifying those who wish to participate under the banner of their
alliance;
2. Distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War.
3. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate
Participating managers who are not Captains must:
1. Submit one (1) RSI Roll-Up Certificate to participate
2. Announce their intent to compete with manager name, team name, and
alliance they will represent in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter.
Announcement made on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
a. No scores will be tabulated until a Gift Certificate is received.
No EXCEPTIONS.
b. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare themselves in
the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter as stated above AND be verified
by the alliance Captain they will represent.
c. Only one (1) team per player may compete. No multiple teams or
aliases will be allowed. Violations will result in immediate
disqualification from the Turf War (so be sure to take any
multiple teams OFF of Team Maintenance).
d. Scoring will NOT be retroactive for teams that do not properly
declare or fail to send a Gift Certificate by Turn 1. In other
words, if your Gift Certificate is not received until Turn 3 of
the Turf War, and you have fought on Turns 1 and 2, your scoring
will not begin until Turn 3. All conditions must be met before
scoring will begin--declaration, verification, and Gift
Certificate received.
e. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 5 of
the Turf War.
f. For purposes of scoring, the moderators will score the Turf War
and settle any and all disputes as they arise. Their decisions
will be final.
Scoring will be as follows for Fights:

Special Scoring Considerations for the Turf War are as follows:
Spy Report mention (team name only) +2
Style Master +2
Duelmaster +2
Champions:
1. A Champion may be declared, but one is not mandatory.
2. Only one Champion allowed per manager at any given time.
3. Champions that graduate or are killed by another warrior in the arena, but
not the Dark Arena, may be replaced.
4. Champions must be in the Adepts bracket or lower on the turn they are
declared, and may NOT have gone above Adepts level at any time; this
includes teams transferred into North Fork for the Turf War.
Bloodfeuds:
1. Bloodfeuds will score points on all four (4) turns.
2. There is no limit to which warrior may bloodfeud or how often.
Tournament Considerations:
1. Tournament participation is ALLOWED and encouraged.
2. Tournament Victors won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 25 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a
warrior(s) wins such status.
3. Tournament Champions won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 50 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a
warrior(s) win such status.
4. Points for TVs and TCs will be applied the Turn after RSI posts
tournament results in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter (i.e., if the
results post on North Fork turn 275, points will be credited on North
Fork turn 276 to the applicable teams).
Special Considerations:
1. Each alliance begins the Turf War with zero (0) points.
2. There will be NO alliance or team changes once the contest has begun. If
you begin the Turf War with Alliance A, you must end the Turf War with
Alliance A. If you begin the Turf War with Team A, you must end the Turf
War with Team A.
3. There will be a maximum of seven (7) teams allowed per alliance for the
Turf War.
4. The Dark Arena may be used on the first turn only, of every warrior,
without penalty.
Prizes:
The Turf War is a "winner take all" contest. All prizes and 100% of the Gift
Certificates will be awarded to the Captain of the winning alliance. It is the
responsibility of the Captain to distribute Gift Certificates. Moderators will
submit a list of each manager on the winning alliance to RSI at the completion of the
contest for the non-Certificate prizes.
The following prizes have been secured from RSI:
1. Renaming of the North Fork (DM 47) arena;
2. Renaming of Dark Arena Monsters (one for each manager in the winning
alliance);
3. Known Favorites for one warrior on each team of the winning alliance
(warrior must be ranked Initiate or above, must be alive, and must have
at least one arena fight to receive this award).
4. +1 Skill bonus potion for each manager on the winning alliance. Bonus
potion must be applied to a living warrior from (DM 47)
5. +1 Skill bonus potion (one) for each manager who fights in all 10 rounds
AND 45 fights of the Turf War. Bonus potion must be applied to a living
warrior from (DM 47)
These awards will be listed by the Moderator for claiming from RSI (Lee) within 4
turns of the end of TW VI.
Moderators:
The Moderators for this event will be Oz and Master Darque. They will arbitrate all
dealings during the course of the contest. Their decisions will be final. All
questions, comments, and scoring disputes may be directed to Land of Oz or Darque
Forces via diplo in DM 47. Managers with internet access may send a private message
to [The Consortium] or [Darque] on the Duel2 Forums. Lastly, you may also email
questions, comments, and scoring disputes to rebelnerfherder at yahoo dot com.
Please note there have been rule changes from the last Turf War. Please read them
carefully!
Contest will begin in November following the Fall Mail In Tournament.
