Return of Daggers Deep, Part 2

Four figures stood in the waning sunlight as the dusty approach of what would be
the last caravan of the day came into view. Kayelbe stepped away from the group and
approached the man in charge of the wagon train.
"Greetings! My name is Kayelbe," the manager said, hopefully. "This is the
train from Point, is it not? I am expecting two passengers."
"Well met, Kayelbe, I'm Captain Scragg. I'm afraid all I have for you is this."
The waggoner pulled a parchment from behind the wagon's seat. He handed it to
Kayelbe, who quickly scanned it. His shoulders dropped, disappointment clearly in
his eyes. The three warriors, who were watching the exchange intently, scurried over
to join their leader.
"Barjin didn't send anyone, did he?" asked Raeg Trops. Yruf the Golem stood
silently, ignoring the flicks to his ears dealt by the skinny lunger, Rawn.
"I'm afraid not," Kayelbe replied. "He says that the arena in Iaye is nearly
empty and the recruits he had set aside for us have deserted for greener pastures."
"Excuse me sir, but I couldn't help but overhear you are looking for some help,"
Captain Scragg interjected. "Why, my son and I are between trade runs and could use
the extra coin. If you are willing to pay, I'm sure we could be of use to you."
Kayelbe rubbed the scruff on his chin for a moment. Sure, they could use the
help. He eyed the young lad who had climbed off the wagon and now stood beside the
captain. He looked wet behind the ears, but strong. "Ever fight in the arenas?" he
asked, finally.
"Well sir, we've fought as standbys a bit, here and there along the 'routes,"
Captain Scragg replied. "We fared well enough. Tell you what: we'll fight six
weeks for just room and board. If we don't win more than we lose, we'll be on our
way. But, if we fare well, you sign us on as permanent members of the stable."
Kayelbe squinted as he pondered the proposition. Barjin had failed to follow
through on the agreement, but these two would undoubtedly be cheaper in the long run.
The old manager cracked a half-smile; little did these two know that there was only
one way out of a stable, short of an Invitation. Should these two prove useless,
their next wagon out of Shadowspire would be headed to the morgue.
"Scragg, you have yourself a deal," Kayelbe announced. He added to the others,
"Daggers Deep, meet your new teammates. Training resumes at dawn. Yruf: see to it
that our new warriors are outfitted properly. I'm off to register Captain Scragg and
the Caravan Guard with the Commission."

                                      SPY REPORT

So why do I have this bag over my head? Because I am The Unknown Spymaster and
I'm going to give you a spy report!. Say good-bye to FURRY FURY, as they are pushed
from the coveted top team spot by the FUCHI OWNED stable. Take a look at CLAN
LONGBEARD's act, as they have a 4-1-0 week and gain 14 places in the team ranking.
Rising in the ranks like a loaf of armored bread (okay, I admit it's corny) is RODENT
CLAN, who swept up 11 places in the ranks. Take a look at DRAGONBANE GUILD's act, as
they have a 2-3-0 week and gain 11 places in the team ranking. A seasoned team is
steady in the lists. But to GOONSWARM, which fell to 21st, it's what you soak in
before going to the Dark Arena. It looks like the guys(?) at CULT OF BACCHUS had a
good week as they went 5-0-0 to put them in 8th place. I guess steroids help! Call
it luck at the right time or bribes in the right hands, but the new team CORPORATE
IDIOTS scored a 4-1-0 record this week. Hey everybody, watch out for SLAUGHTER MOUSE
5, who flew up 26 points in the rankings after mashing LIAM O'FLAHERTY like a melon.
Keep your eye on this gal. Ya know, some days it doesn't pay to walk out on the
sands. LIAM O'FLAHERTY was defeated by SLAUGHTER MOUSE 5 and drops 19 points. Well,
if ya don't shows up at the laundromat, ya can'ts wash yer clothes. GURG did not
fight this week so his title was forfeit. In front of all the crowds, PO'D PANDA
took the Duelmaster's crown for his own. I give the bum two weeks. 4 out of 5
gladiators surveyed protect the body, so try and avoid aiming at that location.
Let's dig a little deeper into what's happening in the SHADOWSPIRE arena. And
hey, kiddies, those of you who didn't avoid KELLUMBO'S KIDS, please raise you hand.
Wow. Does SHADOWSPIRE really have that many liars? Okay, so I may not be funny, but
catch WARMASTERS' act in the arena. Those acrobats seem to be fairly deft at running
from KELLUMBO'S KIDS. Well dang howdy, but if challenges were votes, DEVON would be
president. Although it may be a contest she doesn't want to win. Can any one out
there say 'weasel'? Oh well, just saying '71 MACH ONE will do. He challenged 18
points down to trash BALOR. Definition of petty: '71 MACH ONE beat BALOR, a
mismatch of 18 points. Challenging down 28 points was THE CATALYST. Pretty soon
he'll be using two shields and selling 'T.P.: The only way to clean up' pins. Here
is a definition of happiness: SHAY REDMOON overcame THE CATALYST to go from 5 to 28
recognition points. In a touching display by a 'touched' warrior, PINKY'S PIG BOY
went after BALTAIRE, who was higher by 21 points. Well, when the dust settled,
PINKY'S PIG BOY was defeated by BALTAIRE.
Remember that an arena is not always a safe place to be, but it is one of the
most interesting, though! This week 17-10-1 FURIOUS FOX was sent to the Dark Arena.
I know a lot of fighters with similar records who might take notice of this. FURIOUS
FOX says to hers dog--'Who should I fight this week?'. Dog says 'BLACK ORC'. So the
gal dies. Moral? Put lying dogs to sleep. Big deal, so VILE RAT got mashed in the
Dark Arena. With his face he was more at home with the trolls than with us. (Waka
waka). There's got to be more reason for the sending of VILE RAT to the Dark Arena
than his record (12-6-1). Anybody got any ideas GOONSWARM? This week 5-7-0 IAYCK
was sent to the Dark Arena. I know a lot of fighters with similar records who might
take notice of this. The audience likes blood and there was plenty of it covering
E.M. FORSTER as he was driven to an early grave by '66 CORVETTE of the AMERICAN
MUSCLE. Too bad GOONSWARM won't be eating any crow this week because of DEADTEAR's
bloodfeud passing. Why? No bloodfeud, no fowl (Drumroll, Groans). Congrats to
MONKEY KING for revenging the death of his teammate (but more importantly, feeding
BRIARSMILE a bit of dirt). Here's some advice: warriors with little wit and will
may encounter problems on the trail to the Isle.
Well, there's the manager of the SHADOWSPIRE giving me the 'cut' sign (or is
that 'They're going to strangle you in the alley?). Okay, so I may not be the
world's best comedian, but then you guys aren't the world's best warriors. Hasta la
bye-bye. (Loud choruses of 'Beat it, ya bum!')-- The Unknown Spymaster

Shotgun -- Gonna try that one again. Gonna try to put you down in the first 1/4 of
the first minute this time. -- Biston

Iayck -- Wow! Eight hits to the right arm before you finally went down. That was
pretty impressive con/will there. -- Balor

Atilla -- I will take those skills all day, my thanks. Looking forward to seeing how
the skills get put to use vs Spirewolf. -- Arioch

PO'd -- Wow, that was a crappy fight on my part. I should have just went with what
got me there, it would have made for a much more exciting fight. -- Grath

Punch Card -- No, you are the most challenged warrior because you aren't that good.
As you can see, others are getting their challenges in, not my alliance. -- Tripwire

Balor -- Just assuming, mind you, but if what we read in the NL last turn we will not
be seeing you fight at night, that is a good thing, we shall see you again in the
near future. -- Unholy Knights

Gracchus -- You're going to have to do better than that, well off to see if I can get
flirt my way into the title fight for next turn or the turn after. -- Wee Beastie

Challenger Champs -- Here I come CHAAARRRGGE. -- Wee Beastie

Dark Champion -- I had you, maaan, I had you, so I missed once that's no reason to
steal the initiative away from me, geeesh. -- Decapitated and Dead Bill

E.M. Forster -- I am assuming you were given some bad advice, I don't want to HAVE
kids I want to have kids for LUNCH or to EAT them, got it? -- Wyld Wytch

The Catalyst -- Well, it almost turned out good, see you again. -- Fear Itself

Sledge -- Dude, take your little stick and go home. -- Pinky's Pig Boy

Vincere Aut Mori II -- Welcome to Shadowspire, may your swords be clean of blood and
your shields battered to pieces, enjoy. -- Unholy Knights and Gentleben

PO'D Panda -- Pushing up daisies, you say, what makes you think you can beat me, let
alone kill me, you're lucky I like my men cocky. -- Wee Beastie

All -- So I wanted to show you all Furious Fox prior to her leaving. She will always
have a special spot in my heart as my first grad from 81. Her numbers were nothing
special at 10(+1) 12 7 17 17 15 7; however, she was very fortunate to be bonused in
both defense and attack (+4). Due to these bonuses I suspect she will get some play
in ADM. Oh, her fav learn was parry and she prefers the LO, which I did not pick-up.
I thought it was the SS, shows ya what I know. -- Grimm

Grath -- I want to congratulate you on the title fight, you fought with both skill
and honor. Now I must pray to the gods of this land that I get another shot at
rising to the throne in Shadowspire. -- PO'd Panda

Gigi -- Sorry, but I you were the most promising challenge. What's a Koala to do? --
Krazed Koala

Urrim -- Sorry FE made a difference, now if I could learn more than 1 skill, sigh. --
Ocelot

All -- What does it mean on this slip "you have been selected to fight in the DARK in
the arena of death, leave your belongings, you will not need them where you are
going"? -- Furious Fox

Wait a minute, Grimm you SOB. -- Foxy

Fox -- Don't worry I beleive you will leave the Arenamaster lying face first in the
sands. -- Grimm

Soon I will join the ranks of Furry Fury, Woodstock? He ain't pretty no more. --
Sinister Snoopy

Gurg -- Nice comeback! -- Wilhelm

Ting-Ting -- To say I am getting tired of seeing you is an understatement. --
Liberius

Beauchamp -- I am absolutely shocked to see what type of fighter you are! There is
no way I'd have guessed Kellumbo would have found another turtle for the team! --
Vanek, Manager of Warmasters

DeGotti -- I can understand your displeasure of Brutus' downchallenge of Gigi Divine.
Truth be told, he was designed to be a scum hunting killer. After learning his
favorites with his graduation notice, I wanted to test them against a scum before he
left. You were simply unlucky enough to be one of two close enough for him to
challenge (and you were the 2nd one). I didn't think it would be too big a deal
though since Gigi Divine and Brutus were equals in the FE category. -- Vanek

Kellumbo -- Even the score? I think the score is already FAR in your favor in the
down challenge department. My down challenge of Devon was simply my way of
displaying my unhappiness of Desiree's down challenge several turns before of
Gracchus. I generally don't get too bent out of shape on down challenges as long as
the warriors FE are similar. In the Desiree case, it was only lop-sided 34-11 in
your favor. Keep making those kind of challenges against me and I shall continue to
return the favor as often as I am able. -- Vanek

Arioch -- The boss said I should give it a try--a reasonable bloodfeud is how he put
it. Not so reasonable after all. Perhaps the Wolf will need to take care of
business. -- Attila

Dunnik -- Dumb challenge, that. -- St. George

Brain -- Dumb challenge, that. But it is much nicer when it is the other guy making
the dumb decisions. -- Spirewolf

Ilyena -- Welcome to Toker and the rest of his crew! I heartily enjoyed your first
turn in the fine arena of Shadowspire. May you stay long and prosper, at least
against another guildhouse. -- Blue Marble

Overkill -- That might have been the wrong strategy to be running for that fight.
Indeed, I think you proved pretty thoroughly that it was a bad strategy. I shall
modify it. Your team has made a habit of challenging our Guild lately. It has been
noted. -- Lord Exeter

Kellumbo -- Yeah I must really be a bad manager! Running with a over a 54% w/l
record while running off styles and on the receiving end of more than my share of
down challenges! Jax style is one I haven't had much experience with but thought I
would do something different! Sorry I'm not the vanilla TP, ST, LU manager that you
are! -- DeGotti

Vito Corleone -- Don't think I've overlooked your last couple challenges towards
Shay! You just wait! -- DeGotti

I'm a little speechless... not because this turn didn't go as expected, but because I
still don't have the fights... disappointing! Anyway, congrats to the trendy Gurg
and to the IC who held the ground. Welcome to the newcomers! -- Le Pentarque.

Congrats, Grimm, that was not so close!

Well, Kellumbo, I have to fill my avoids, and in this friendly arena, who could I
avoid other than our home villain? -- Le Pentarque

That was funny, Zandir. I guess you are right: anyone losing against me should take
a torch! -- Average Joe

The Director -- That was hilarious. What was even more hilarious was the response.

Tripwire whining aobut how he doesn't need his friends to protect him, and this only
a short distance below DK's post. Did you see how vehemently DK defended his
*friend's honor. -- Opinicus

The Director -- You shouldn't talk about DK until you have a better win/loss record.
I mean, really. So what you need to do is run a ton of scum and lungers and then
target mainly the less experienced managers. Then after your record is sufficiently
pumped, you would have to get some friends and brag about your alliance and how great
you are. Then and only then will you be on par with DK. He is a legend in his own
mind. -- Opinicus

DK -- You are the wet fart that soils the underpants of Shadowspire. I know it
doesn't mean much coming from a manager with such a poor record as I, but there it is
all the same. -- Opinicus

DK -- Your point has certainly been made! If someone picks on one of her chicks,
Mother Hen gets angry. That 'crawl under a rock' comment was great, though. I bet
writing that even gave you a hot flash! -- The Director

Tripwire -- I mess with you because it's so easy to get you riled up, which I find
very amusing. The truth is, I don't know anything about you, your alliances, or your
rivalries. They just seem to be soft targets. BUT, seeing you tout your
individuality amongst your allies only a short distance below Kellumbo's rather hot
and bothered personal ad, glorifying your accomplishments? Oh, man that was funny!
The Prince comes to the Fair Maiden's rescue; that is absolute grade A material! The
only question left is, will the Maiden grant the Hero Prince a kiss? -- The Director

Chimera -- Good try. See you again real soon. -- Punch Card

Dylan Ryder -- You got brass, lad, I'll give you that. Now, why don't you Ryde over
to the bar and fetch me a pitcher of mead. -- Dead Sexy

Lord Exeter -- I have brought dishonor to myself by going for such an easy win. You
have my apologies. -- Overkill

Mother Hen -- Cluck cluck cluck 40 percent, cluck cluck cluck, Wannabe, cluck cluck
cluck, Crawl under a rock, cluck cluck cluck. AND YOU CAN QUOTE ME! -- The Director

Biston -- Dude, that was fun! See you again REAL soon! -- Shotgun Wedding

Punch Card -- Don't pull a muscle patting youself for killing Bugbear. You were
fighting a 2-2, sz 16 lunger. I didn't even notice what team you were on, just your
4-5 record when I had him challenge you. I just now got a response from webmaster
and can finally see styles on Terrablood, no more excuses now for me. Have fun
swinging that tree trunk at Xorn, he just got off the short bus with his bicycle
helmet on. -- Deep Thought

Killer Smile -- I guess one way to avoid a full bloodfeud is to go to the Dark Arena.
I'm so disappointed in the Director, but not surprised. -- Deep Thought

Greetings All -- This is Vincent Michaels, "the Rake", mgr. of the Stormbringers out
of DM 33 Niatoli Island, back after a relatively long layoff. I come back to my
arena to find only two other teams there. Terrible! I'm calling on all you managers
out there who have inactive teams in Niatoli to put them back in the game. Also,
anyone else who wants to come check out our little island are welcome. Good food and
a lot of good gambling, and you will have a chance to smack around Gen. GirlPants and
his band of Ravaged Queens. Great fun. Come one, come all!

Players of Duel 2:

RSI wants to try, in a few arenas, a system that rewards role-play and general arena
involvement. Our thoughts at this time are as follows, and feedback is earnestly
solicited:

1. What to reward.
a. Spotlights--they don't have to be involved and lengthy storylines, and in fact,
my own inclination is to say: anything game related and original (i,e,, not a
reprint), maybe set a minimum length. I use TOGS here as my model--half a column as
formatted for the newsletter, and we don't judge the quality of the writing (so long
as the editor isn't grossed out), just the intent to make a positive contribution.
b. A dm column where one is "due." Again, no judgment on quality of writing, should
be dm-related, and I would say (this is just me) a minimum length of maybe five
lines.
c. Personals. More than just "you suck," or "good fight." How much more doesn't
really concern me, and quality, other than "not offensive to the editor," should not
be an issue. We don't want to encourage participation and then muzzle it.
d. It has been suggested that a reward point or two be offered for running a full
team. We could include this, but my own inclination would be to say that there would
be no points for this, but that those who don't make a clear effort on this
(accidents happen, so maybe something like "when the three-turn total of fights is
below twelve"?) aren't eligible for points on any turn until they get it back up to a
full team.

2. How to reward it.
a. We've been thinking nebulously about some kind of point system, obviously, as an
example, say 3 points for a spotlight, 2 for a column, 1 for personals, more points
here for what takes more effort, but some points for any effort. This is in no way
final! But some way to keep track of who is contributing and how much, and as non-
subjective as possible; this would be noted as each newsletter would be proofed. A
way to clearly identify who's sending in what would help, but I can work it out by
referring to the warrior listings if I have to.
b. But, assuming a point system, do the rewards, whatever they end up being, go to
the player who achieves a certain point total? Is this calculated per turn, or as a
running total over as many turns as it takes to reach that point? Or to the player
with the highest total on any given turn? What about ties?
c. What do the points get the player? The current thought is X points gets a free
fight, probably replacing the "Popularity Leader's" free fight in the relevant arena.
That suggests only one player getting a role-play free fight on any given turn. Is
this enough to encourage the newsletter participation we're hoping for? Should we
convert "This Week's Favorite" to a role-play free fight also? Or handle rewards in
some other way entirely?

3. Where it happens.
The current thought is, try it in four arenas: one in each region, and one slow
arena. Who picks the arenas in question? I'd be inclined to rule out those that are
doing fairly well already (Ardivent, Sunset, Lapur; Arkers, Morya, North Fork), but
is that wise? Or even fair? Darned if I know. Places where it is NOT currently
intended to happen: Transfer arenas. Maybe rule out the no-tourney arenas as
current candidates, too?

If this seems to work well enough to be worth the effort, should we consider
extending it to more, eventually to all non-transfer, arenas?

This is not a "someday down the line we might" concept. We want to do this, and
SOON. Your feedback would be appreciated, for, against, changes, anything. You can
email me directly at jputney zianet com (make sure it says DM in the subject line) or
send a diplo to scribe, any arena.

P.S. Staff members not to be eligible for role-playing free fights.

The Battle Royal V is upon us! Come join one of the original contests that has had
some of the games best managers involved in the past. DM 18, Talcama, some consider
it to be the crown jewel of the Delarq cities is where this contest will take place.

The Battle Royal is intended to be a play as you want, play what you want Delarquan
style contest with very few rules. While I'd love to say, "NO AVOIDING" is the only
rule (and that wouldn't be too far off), I must spell out situations that can and
have occurred and require additional clarification.

The advantages of this format:
1) Simple.
2) No penalty for DAs.
3) No restrictions on warriors entered into the contest (baggers, TC mods, etc all
   welcome)
4) No penalty for not fighting.
5) It isn't a race where 21 wit and favorite learn determine the victor.
6) Losing a warrior (or even your whole team) doesn't eliminate you from contention.
7) It is possible to overcome almost any deficit. And this has been proven, with
managers making huge point swings in short periods of time!
8) It is a contest designed to show manager skill rather than warrior ability.

There are a few disadvantages:
1) There is no set end. It is possible for this contest to go on indefinitely. In
practice, this format has worked very nicely in the past and I expect it will
   continue to work well.
2) You cannot avoid (But that is part of the fun and the head to head nature of this
   contest requires this rule.)
3) It encourages bloodshed.
4) Baggers and experienced warriors have an advantage over new warriors.

Battle Royal Rules:

- Any team in Talcama is eligible to participate. There are no restrictions on
warriors (baggers, TC prize modified, etc). However, any warrior that fights for
your team is considered in the BR.

- Teams may not avoid any other team within the contest. (Note that you may avoid
teams outside the contest but you do so at your own risk.) Avoiding a team on the
turn they enter the Battle Royal is not considered against the rules (since you
couldn't know the team wasn't part of the BR). The suggestion is not to avoid at
all. Assur (the contest moderator) gets an avoid report every turn and will catch
people avoiding!

- Managers may only enter a single team in the contest.

- Any manager with more than one team in Talcama may not challenge any other contest
warrior with their non contest team(s). The intention is that no advantage can be
gained by having multiple teams in the arena.

****Failure to comply with the above rules***
1st offense: Disqualification from the prize, but you may still participate.
2nd offense: Warning.
3rd offense: Removal from Battle Royal.

- If a manager decides to switch teams, his score will start back at 0. This is to
prevent a manager from sweeping the contest with several teams of sandbaggers. Can a
manager use this clause to go from a negative score to zero? Yes. I realize this is
sort of cheating, but I'd rather have a manager start over with a new team than drop
out of the contest. Even so, they have to start at 0 and must gain 25 points.

- If your warrior loses a contest fight because of an input error and this error is
verified by RSI, you will have a point added to your score. The head to head records
will remain the same and any points gained by another manager will remain on that
manager's record.

- As soon as you are announced in the newsletter, you are officially entered into the
Battle Royal. Scoring begins on that turn! You are expected to follow the rules
that turn and every turn following. Your team may enter any time they wish during
the course of the Battle Royal.

- If you are exiting the Battle Royal, you are not removed until the turn after your
intention is published. You are asked to follow the rules for that turn (either
through not avoiding or not running your warriors).

Scoring:
- Scoring begins the turn your team declares participation.
- Scoring continues through the turn your team withdraws.
- Score is calculated by: Wins+Kills-Lossses.
- Only fights with other B.R. participannts count towards your score, but they count
whether they are challenges or random match-ups.
- First Manager to 25 points wins!
- In event of tie, B.R. continues until one team that has reached 25 points is ahead
  of all other participants.

Disputes:
- The attempt has been made to make these rules as complete and bulletproof as
possible, but Tripwire will resolve any disputes as fairly as he is capable.

Prizes:
For the Winner:

6 Months Free Play in Talcama for the winning team (doesn't include tourneys)!

One +1 Bonus Potion (up to max for warrior, to be used on a warrior in DM 18)!

One Limited Damage Bump Potion (one time use, up to max for stats, used on DM 18
warrior)!

One Minor Stat Switch Prize (up to 2 points can be moved from one stat to another
stat on a new rollup in DM 18, before adding 14 points. This prize can be used up to
3 months from the contest end. Both points must be used in the same place (can't
take one from a speed and one from deftness and add one to wit and will)).

One Favorites Knowledge Potion (to be used on a 5+ FE warrior in DM 18).

Rename One Dark Arena Creature in DM 18, which will be renamed for 6 Months or until
the Ladies decide to return it to the previous name.

All potions renaming prizes must be used within 2 turns of the end of the contest.

Endurance Award (available to all participants):

One +1 Bonus Potion (up to max for warrior, to be used on a warrior in DM 18).

To qualify for the Endurance Award you must participate in 90% of the total fights
possible over the course of the BR. If you don't have time to make it into the BR by
the first turn, there will be a two turn window before the counter will start for new
teams. The fights do not have to be BR point scoring fights, just 90% of the total
possible participation over the course of the contest! So, if the contest runs 26
turns, there are 130 fights possible. Your team must have 117 fights during those 26
turns to be eligible.

All prizes/potions subject to RSI's interpretation of how they are used/implemented.
RSI said the faves knowledge must be used on an Inits warrior or higher and set at
5FE or more.
