DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
*The Dragonbane Guild gets a new manager for a day*
Lord Exeter leaned back in the chair at the desk in the Dragonbane Guildhouse
and sighed in satisfaction. After two failed attempts he had finally managed to beat
the Longbeard, Corrin. Even better, he had finally claimed the throne, something
that both he and the Wolf had failed at previously. Nomad had been frustrated with
the second generation so far, which made the victory that much more sweet.
But this time Nomad wasn't able to be around for the victory, he was off
surveying things in Sunset or some such thing, which meant the job of reviewing the
troops after the last turn's fights would fall to him--and explained why he was able
to put his feet up on the boss's desk. His brief reverie was interrupted by a slew
of curses as Spirewolf entered the room.
"I can't believe I lost to another one of La Pentarque's warriors! Those La-la
Pentarchy warriors, or whatever they are, are driving me nuts?! How can you lose to
a guy named Joe Average?!"
The Duelmaster attempted to conceal a smirk and noted that, "I don't believe I
did lose to Joe Average. Or Iron Smith, for that matter. And I believe that is Le
Pentarque and the squad is La Pentarchie. Show some respect."
Clearly the Wolf was a bit frustrated as he howled, "Repect?! What! Why...
yeah, I suppose so. Maybe next time I'll get to fight one of the Warmasters, they're
all over in the champs as well."
"Yeah, you might. Of course, then the risk is that you might end up dead."
Exeter watched as his teammate scowled and turned from the room. He understood
Spirewolf's frustrations. He just hoped his guildmate managed to vent his anger in
a useful manner in the training room. Next up, came Blue Marble. It had to be the
Marble, Exeter could hear him clanking along down the hallway. Eventually he
appeared in the entry to the office with his helm still affixed to his head. Blue
Marble walked in, bonking his head on the side of the entryway as he did so.
"Ah, Bluey, what's with the helm? Did you just come from the training room?"
"Huh? Oh, this?" He asked, pointing towards his head. "No, I wasn't training.
Why would I be? I just got out of a fight. We don't usually train again the same
day. Do we? Are you changing things?" He staggered a bit as he approached the
desk, appearing to have a bit of trouble seeing out of his slightly off-kilter
headgear. "So, you won the title. Sweet! Do you get to do something cool now?"
Exeter just looked a bit at his teammate, trying to make out the eyes behind the
helm. Eventually he did catch a glance of them, but there really didn't seem to be
much going on behind them. "No. Nothing very special, except write a column. And I
have to review the troops while Nomad is away. Why don't you go back to the training
room."
Blue Marble lurched to his feet with a grunt and headed for the door. Lord
Exeter thought he overheard something like, "Write a column! Write it?! When I get
that seat I'll just dictate it to some serf. Write? Isn't that what those 'writey
people' do?"
Lord Exeter could only shake his head as Blue Marble left, to be replaced by
Attila Keenblade. Like Spirewolf before him, Attila did not seem very pleased with
the week s fights. "I can't believe I lost to a Loon! A Bashing Loon! A bashing
Loon with a losing record! Inconceivable!"
"I don't think that word means what you think it means," Exeter commented with a
wry smile, but seeing his teammate's irritated response he quickly followed up with,
"but you have been having a rough go of it. You beat a different Loon the previous
turn, didn't you?"
"Yeah, the previous turn was fine. But I'm just not sure what is going wrong.
All the trainers have me doing are some strange repeated motions." As he said this
Attila s hands were moving in little circles as he mumbled, "Wax on, wax off," in a
tone Exeter could barely hear. "What the heck is wax anyway? Ah to heck with it,
maybe I'll just go back to the old style of training. It seems to be working for
you."
With little fanfare Attila turned and left, continuing to make little circular
motions with his hands while mumbling, "Wax on, wax off." Meanwhile Lord Exeter
leaned back in Nomad's chair and wondered how the team had ever managed to get to 200
wins. A minute later the fifth and youngest member of the squad, the Dwarf Azaghal,
ran into the room.
"What is with this team?!" he said in a not quite out of breath, not quite
angry, but sort of bewildered or at least mildly confused sort of way. "I was down
in the training room when Spirewolf came in looking really annoyed after losing his
fight. What did you say to him anyway? No, never mind that. Then he started
picking up war hammers and looked at me kinda funnylike. He yelled 'training time!'
and started throwing hammers at me! He threw a war hammer at me! He started yelling
'If you can dodge a warhammer you can dodge a...' but I didn't stick around to hear
the rest, I just kept moving and hoping I didn't run out of luck!"
With that Azaghal threw himself into a chair. "And then as I sprinted up here,
Attila's wandering around saying something about 'wax;. What is going on?!"
Lord Exeter couldn't help but laugh a bit at the kid's frustration. Any
guildhouse could get a bit crazy at times, with warriors knowing that their next
fight might be their last. But the vets at Dragonbane seemed to be having more fun
than normal with Azaghal. But he was a tough kid, he could handle it. In fact, it
seemed likely that he would probably turn out to be the best of the bunch. "Relax
kiddo. The Wolf's just having some fun and Attila is, well, okay, I guess I really
don't know what Attila is up to, but I'm sure it isn't infectious. You'll be fine,
at least as long as you don't make losing a habit."
"Don't worry, I don't plan on it. I'm not a fan of the infirmary." Azaghal
visibly relaxed a bit. "Do you mind if I walk around the city a bit, give these
loons a chance to cool down?"
"Sure, go ahead. But don't call them Loons. Attila just lost to one and Marble
is still trying to figure out what the word 'literate' means." Azaghal and Lord
Exeter both smiled a bit as the young dwarf got up and wandered out. "Really, is
that all there is to managing a squad? I could do this pretty easily," Lord Exeter
thought as he heard a crash downstairs that almost certainly indicated that Blue
Marble had reached the bottom of the stairs a little faster than he had expected.
I hope you enjoyed the insight into life at the Guild. Hopefully I shall return
next turn with a more traditional column.
--Lord Exeter, Duelmaster of Shadowspire
SPY REPORT
You elder fighters surely remember me. The younger ones may call me Olaf
Modeen. I return to SHADOWSPIRE once again! Hmmmph! I always thought CAPITAL
CARTEL was an over-rated team and they proved it with a 3-2-0! Up 'n down. Up 'n
down. Rankings always change. Up 'n down. I think I'm gonna be... Well, THE
MONGOLOIDS II's 7th moved them up to 2-3-0 place. CLAN LONGBEARD showed SHADOWSPIRE
what they were made of as they fought with a vengeance to walk off with 4-1-0.
What's with LATRICE? She actually beat DARQUE AGES' ANSELM, and walked away with 21
more points from the fight. Laughs were big at KELLUMBO'S KIDS while they watched
LATRICE clobber ANSELM. He lost 17 points and got bruised from objects thrown from
the stands. Another fighter (IRON SMITH 15-7-0) challenged another Duelmaster (LORD
EXETER 16-10-0). Life goes on. I can barely restrain my enthusiam for LA
PENTARCHIE's outstanding member, Duelmaster IRON SMITH. Advice to fighters with a 1
will--give up fighting!
If at first you don't succeed, avoid. That'll get you in the Spyreports.
SHADOWSPIRE thinks OF WOLF AND MAN and their 179-185-11 is too much! If at first you
don't succeed, give up... The bums at UNHOLY KNIGHTS couldn't face the challenges
from OF WOLF AND MAN! No excuse for that! How well I know the feeling of being the
most challenged warrior, LATRICE! Don't make idle boasts, they may come back to
haunt you. Maybe UNHOLY KNIGHTS' DRAS is one of those guys who likes pain, or
something. That's what he'll get next week, after challenging up 27 to REGINA
SPECTRE. I don't get it. DRAS goes and challenges REGINA SPECTRE, way above him,
but gets 3 points after he loses! Is this a new strategy? SERAFIN GAWAIN of THE RED
BLADES knows how to pick 'em. She challenged W.S. GILBERT of LITERATE LOONS who is
up by 22. Now was this a wise move? SERAFIN GAWAIN perhaps got hers just desserts,
seeing as she was overcame by W.S. GILBERT and ended up with 57 recognition points.
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? NATHANAEL WEST of LITERATE LOONS didn't know when to quit.
When you've got a 5-8-0, that's a good sign. Now he's dead. Is it my imagination,
or are fighters getting younger every day? To die so young, so gloriously!
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? All
work and no play makes Olaf a dull fighter. Work and play no fighter dull Olaf.
Olaffighterwork and no play. Time for my medication, so I'll leave now. Practice,
practice, practice!-- Olaf Modeen
