TEAM SPOTLIGHT
DAGGERS DEEP
Knock, Knock, Knock
SCRAGG lifted his head, eyes straining in the darkness. The fire had died down,
indicating it was much too late, or too early, for visitors. He sat up on his
sleeping mat and rubbed his eyes. He much preferred the floor of the main room to
the private room he was afforded as a member of the DAGGERS DEEP stable. Years of
caravanning had hardened him so that the luxury of a soft bed was lost on him.
Knock, Knock, Knock
"Someone's at the door," a voice echoed from the shadows. Scragg fumbled with
the lantern a moment before its pale orange light illuminated the room. Standing in
the corner was the golem, YRUF. Scragg cursed the animated gladiator under his
breath. He never trusted the magic that brought golems to life, and the fact that
they never slept made him uneasy even more. Still, it did keep him out of guard duty
on those long caravans to Zuwayza, so it wasn't all bad, he mused.
KNOCK, KNOCK, KNOCK
The gentle rapping that had roused Scragg before had now became a loud pounding.
He supposed he should go ahead and see what was so damn urgent as to wake him up at
this hour. Opening the heavy oak door, Scragg found himself looking down at a young
girl, no more than twenty years of age. Her face was nearly hidden in the cowl of
her fur-lined cloak. The wind howled menacingly, and Scragg felt compelled to step
aside and allow her entry.
"Is this the guild house of Daggers Deep?" the girl asked as she confidently
strode past Scragg. The grizzled caravan master-turned gladiator followed her with
his eyes as he began to push the door closed. His effort met resistance; something
was blocking the door. Scragg pushed harder, cursing the wind. His eyes widened as
he realized it wasn't the weather but the largest damned Orc he had ever seen!
"That is DRUUMK, my... protector," the girl announced. She seemed to have
sensed his apprehension, even as she was still inspecting the modest main room of the
Daggers Deep guild house. She removed her cloak and hung it on one of the six chairs
that lined the weathered wooden table in the center of the room.
"I wish to see KAYELBE, guild master of Daggers Deep," she proclaimed. The Orc
had by now also entered and taken his place beside the young girl. Scragg closed the
door and looked to Yruf, not fully understanding the nature of her request. The
golem silently turned and headed down the hall. Moments later, it returned with two
others. RAEG TROPS, one of only two surviving original gladiators of the stable,
knelt down beside the fireplace and stoked the dying fire.
"I am Kayelbe," the manager announced. His face was worn and weary, but his
voice was calm. "And whom might you be, child?"
"My name is DANAELA. DANAELA SPYRL. My brothers were briefly under your
employ." Kayelbe studied her for a moment. Her words were confident, as was her
demeanor overall. The manager could only imagine her intent. Clearly she was here
to exact revenge for their deaths at his hand. He did, after all, contract the two
brothers to the Dark Arena, and each met a quick and brutal death there.
"No worries, my good sir," she laughed. "I am not here for any sort of revenge.
TAVIS AND ARGIN were weaklings, and deserved their fate. They were a disgrace to our
clan. I am here to take their place. You will find Druumk to be a capable fighter,
as well." The fact she appeared to read his mind was not nearly as shocking as her
words. Her tone suggested she wasn't asking for a place in the stable, but rather
demanding one. Or two, in the case of her Orc companion.
Kayelbe ran his fingers though his beard. On one hand, he WAS in need of
warriors. His recent, rapid expansion into several arenas had used up the recruits
he had. On the other hand, he couldn't quite shake the uneasy feeling he had about
these two. His decision came quickly, however, as he remembered the expense involved
in attracting new blood, even in a popular place such as Shadowspire.
"You're in," the manager announced. "Yruf: ensure your new teammates have
proper accommodations. At first light I will see to it that they are registered with
the commission for this week's fights. Sleep well; training begins tomorrow at
dawn."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
A Celebratory Mug of Ale
The new Duelmaster of Shadowspire, Spirewolf, and his teammates Attila Keenblade
and Blue Marble, walked into their favorite tavern, the Eagle and Child on St. Giles
street, to celebrate the team's sixth Duelmaster.
"You really smoked ol' Average Joe, Wolf. That was really impressive." Attila
could only hope he would get his shot once Spirewolf had graduated.
Sitting down at a corner booth near the fire, Spirewolf grinned. "It did go
well! Now, it is time to enjoy the fruits of my labors! The fine young ladies of
this town shall swoon even more than before!"
"Oh, I don't know about swooning, Wolf," smirked the lithe young barmaid. "But
we do like having a warrior like you here. Duelmasters drink free you know."
"Ale! Ale for the Duelmaster and his teammates!" Called Attila.
"For now, I'll get your ale. Swooning I'll save for after my shift," noted the
maiden as she smiled a sultry smile and went off to fetch their beverages.
A bit jealous, Blue Marble mumbled, "Girls love a duelmaster."
Spirewolf looked at his teammate. "It isn't just being Duelmaster, Marble,
although that helps. Unless you're a Caveman. Sometimes those guys have trouble
dealing with how easy it all is."
Attila laughed as the celebratory beverages arrived, "Are you saying our old
teammate, Gron da Caveman, couldn't get the girls?"
Noting how all of the ladies in the bar were looking at him, the Duelmaster
grinned wolfishly around the bar. "Gron? No. He did okay for himself, considering
he had that whole 4-letter-caveman thing going against him." Making room for a
lovely young lady on either side of him in the booth, he added, "And he even had to
cope with being an aimer."
"I hate aimers." It was one of the few full sentences Blue Marble knew, but he
knew that one well.
Attila glanced at Marble. "I can't agree with you on that one Marble. But
aimers, Wolf? I thought aimers were the current it-style? What's wrong with being
an aimer?" asked Attila.
"Really, Attila? You don't see it? Ladies, like these two very lovely ones
here," Spirewolf replied while squeezing the two lovelies near at hand, "like a man
with muscles. Real muscles. The kind that come from swinging a real weapon. Aimers,
now, Aimers are sort of the nerds of the dueling world."
"I hate aimers. I don't like nerds. Never saw any." Blue Marble looked up from
his ale.
Attila wasn't sure who to respond to first. He looked at Marble. "Never?
School?"
"School?" Marble just looked blank.
"Yeah, school." Seeing the confusion in his face, Attila quickly added, "Oh,
never mind." Then turning to Spirewolf he moved to the other issue. "Aimer nerds?
You do have some odd ideas sometimes. Care to explain?"
Grinning at his ladies, Spirewolf replied, "Isn't it obvious? They are a bunch
of little guys. Usually smart. But really, do you honestly think they ever get the
girls? Come on! They're aimers! Ever see any muscles on an aimer? You and I can
usually beat them up on the sands now, but someday they will be our bosses, just like
the nerds and geeks who own every business in this town. Eventually they will kick
our butts. Literally. But babe magnets they are not. Not at this point of their
career anyway."
Attila laughed while Blue Marble just stared into his ale mumbling about aimers.
"Yeah, I guess so, but don't let Gron or Balliol hear you say that!" Looking around
the public house, Attila waved over a young lady of his own so that he wouldn't have
to just stare at the Wolf's pair. "Where are the young ones? Azaghal and Cyril?"
"Oh, they may have run into some trouble!" Spirewolf noted with an evil grin.
The grin turned into a loud laugh as he added, "They might make it... eventually!"
With that the Duelmaster of Shadowspire downed his ale and prepared for a night's
hard celebrating. Training would come soon enough in the morning.
*A brief excerpt from the life and times of Spirewolf, Duelmaster of Shadowspire
Should he return to the throne for another turn, look for the next installment, "The
Trouble with Rookies," or is it "Trouble for Rookies"?
SPY REPORT
Hail SHADOWSPIRE! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for
your deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as CAPITAL CARTEL is
pushed out of top team by OTTO'S DINER, who came from 8th with a 4-1-0 this turn.
Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for THE RED
BLADES, whose 2-3-0 this turn dropped them by 8 into 11th. LITERATE LOONS stable has
parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 8 space move up the rankings. This brings them up
to 7th place. Good work, guys! The DAGGERS DEEP guild has had a 4-1-0 turn and
deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can
lead. And let's see, FIMNAR fought MARTIN LUTHER and gained 24 points and
contributed to CLAN LONGBEARD's 1-4-0. MARTIN LUTHER has lost to FIMNAR, falling 19
points, while helping make DARQUE AGES a 3-2-0 turn. And all eyes were on ANSELM
this turn as he ascended to the throne of Duelmaster. SHADOWSPIRE has a new victor!
Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Welcome
Wench uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
The crowd's roar, the smell of iron and leather, mixed with sweat, what more
could a warrior ask of life? Well, besides that. KELLUMBO'S KIDS has cause to stand
tall, as they were SHADOWSPIRE's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a
team to beat. And avoiding KELLUMBO'S KIDS more than any other team we find
SUMMERBORN. SHADOWSPIRE, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing?
Well, sports fans, take notice that VIRIDIO from WARMASTERS was SHADOWSPIRE's most
challenged warrior this turn. In a brave attempt, MILEY from KELLUMBO'S KIDS
challenged up 23 points to fight CHILI SURPRISE from the OTTO'S DINER stable. MILEY
perhaps got hers just desserts, seeing as she was bested by CHILI SURPRISE and ended
up with 59 recognition points. LIAM O'FLAHERTY of LITERATE LOONS had better have a
good reason for challenging down 12 points in a challenge which he won. I thought
LIAM O'FLAHERTY showed great skill and promise when he defeated LOW AND AWAY. All
right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. You gotta do what you gotta do. THE RED BLADES has sent COSMIC RAY to the
Dark Arena. The deed is done. Lift the ale, and toast the memory. We'd like to
remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are;
and it's considered rude.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. Well, I'm burning daylight here in SHADOWSPIRE and I've a long
road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in SHADOWSPIRE again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Monster Manual -- 57 big points! FIFTY-SEVEN! Whoa! Kudos. -- A jealous Agent
What am I doing all the way up here? I'm not THAT good. I should be... Low And Away
Grimm -- Sure felt nice sticking you with two losses last time. Looks like your luck
may be running out. -- Kellumbo
LP -- Not sure if I enjoyed beating Grimm twice, or you once last turn. Only four
behind you. -- DK
Agent -- Quit avoiding, you chicken! -- DK
Summerborn -- My hat's off to you on your two wins against me last turn. Well done.
-- DK
Otto -- Grats on the nice 4-1 last turn. -- DK
What do you all think about on turn 100, everyone submits a team spotlight, and goes
crazy writing PAs for that one turn? I'd love to see a newsletter 20 pages long.
So, let's all plan ahead for big turn 100, which is only a few short months away. --
Kellumbo
Of y'all decide to do this, will those of you with my email address please send
the spotlights to me directly? Otherwise, I could be up all night proofing
them. -- the Editor
Hmm, only six PAs (well, seven if you count this, which you should). I wonder if
this is enough to beat out Agent for PAs this turn? -- DK
Well, I always try to write something, but the 1-4 turns are drying my ink! I guess
most of my guys are getting too old and comfy in this beautiful place... -- Le
Pentarque
Congrats to Spirewolf and Nomad, though. You have a feeling with the Title! -- LP
Corrin -- You are not funny! Most of my fights are over before I can even really see
my opponent. Would I be in need of some glasses? -- Year OTCat.
Olaf Modeen -- I did not realize that challenging for the throne revealed some deep
seated hatred for my opponent! I thought my job as a gladiator was to reach the
throne by any means necessary, and that includes challenging for it (albeit
unsuccessfully). -- Anselm
Nah, that's the golem, not me. It puts that kind of thing in for "color."
Makes you wonder about the people who designed it. -- Olaf
Bili -- My manager says that he should really learn his lesson about challenging
warriors that are off to the Isle. Obviously he hasn't yet! -- Anselm
Djeree the Djerk -- I actually did not expect that challenge to get through, but I,
of all people, should believe in miracles! -- Martin Luther
Head Band -- Not sure how I keep winning match ups like ours, but I'll take it anyway
that I can get it. As you can see by the record, they go against me more often than
favor me. -- Hugh Capet
Sarah James -- Boss said he is getting tired of fighting (and losing) to your guild.
-- Averroes
Kellumbo -- You're a horrible person and... I can't really think of much, but it
looked like everyone else was doing it. Could you please pick a manager, start a
feud, etc, etc so I can have something to write about in the SYP. -- SYP Editor
A reasonable request. -- the newsletter Editor
Outlaw Pete -- Was that what you wanted? Exciting enough for you? -- Blue Marble
Liberius -- You are a worthy opponent. I can see why once upon a nighttime you won a
torchlight fight. But I got that one. -- Attila Keenblade
Captain Scragg -- You do start out quickly, but it is the finish that really matters.
-- Azaghal
Cicero -- Wow, this dueling thing takes longer than I thought! That was quite a
fight. -- Cyril Wyrmslayer
Damn, who runs those Dragonbaners? Talk about not playing nice. You could have at
least let me win once! -- Vanek, Manger of Warmasters
Regina Spectre -- I challenged up all that way and that was all the better you could
teach me? Disappointing to say the least. -- Viridio
Spirewolf -- Congrats on the title. It is appropriate that on the golden anniversary
(81st turn in arena 81) of Shadowspire that a warrior named after it should claim the
throne. Well done, sir! -- Vanek
Kellumbo -- I say that you ignore what everybody else "prefers" and play however you
so choose when your year of no DCing is over. While I absolutely dispised being on
the receiving end of your massive down challenges in the past, they do make for some
interesting banter in the personals and rivalries. While I must admit you were
nowhere near the bad guy that imagined you to be when I first met you at the
Minneapolis ftf (sorry, am I ruining your evil reputation by saying you seemed like a
decent guy?), you do make an outstanding villian. The arena is a better place for
having you in it and I say go back to being the Kellumbo we all know and hate! --
Vanek
Bili -- Congrats on your invite. -- All of Clan Longbeard
Chili Surprise -- Surprise is an understatement! -- Fimnar
Brand -- I would rather be lucky than good anyday. -- Elthor
Mackapacka -- I hope you get yourself a win soon. Good luck. -- Heinrik
All -- Gerth is the 8th member of Clan Longbeard to recieve his invite to the Isle
and like all previous members will be retiring. His numbers 11(+1)-12(+2)-12-17(+1)-
17(+1)-10-11(+1). In 50 fights he raised 6 stats in 9 tries and learned 75 skills
throug <<cut off by hal?>>
Xorn -- Five critical damage hits and you just keep staring back at me. Impressive.
-- Gerth
Arioch -- See you again in 2-3 months. -- Fimnar
Cosmic Ray -- Try using a shield, my friend. -- Elthor
Superior'd Panda -- Keep practicing, bear. -- Heinrik
Virginia Woolf -- How the hell am I over a foot taller than a Shewish Giant!?! --
Illett
Viridio -- Nice challenge. Should have seen that coming. -- Bill the Bard
S. Skunk -- Lovely to see you again. -- S. Gawain
Grobbulus -- Maybe you shouldn't wait until the later minutes to go off like that.
Let me hang around and I might get lucky. Thanks for the schoolin'. -- Kid
Charlemagne
Rosalita -- Nice moves. Tough to get through this town with a decent record. --
Selena
Yeah, but when you do, it means something.
Elthor -- Thanks for that career advice. -- Ray
Spirewolf -- Congrats on the throne! -- The Red Blades
9 February 10
All -- I know you all thought the old Wiz that is Fiz went off to die somewhere.
Well, I didn't. Now I'm back to befuddle and frustrate you with my senseless
ramblings. I look forward to reconnecting with all my old friends and enemies alike.
-- Fizban the Famous
