DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Another edition of "As the Guildhouse Turns" -- The Difficult Life of an Initiate
Attila Keenblade, Duelmaster of Shadowspire, leaned back on the bench at the
Eagle and Child Tavern. As he wrapped his arms around the young ladies on his left
and right, he glanced at his guild-mate, Blue Marble. "Where's Spirewolf? He was
supposed to be here by now."
"Wolf? Don't know. Never know."
"Hmm... yeah. He said he'd be here, so he'll get here I guess. In the
meantime...." And with that he decided to give the ladies a bit more attention than
they had been getting before.
Blue Marble continued to sit there like the rock he was named after. After
several minutes and quite a few girlish giggles, the formerly absent, well-built,
basher approached the table, followed by his smaller teammate, Azaghal. "I don't
care if I am still technically an initiate, Wolf! I'm a challenger Init AND I have
12 fights experience now! I do not have to do any more of your silly old stunts
anymore! Cyril can do those!"
Attila looked up and smiled. "Azzy, was the Wolf late because he's been hazing
the rookies again? You never give up, do you, Wolf?"
The former Duelmaster failed completely as he attempted to feign a look of
shocked, pure innocence. He quickly gave it up and grinned. "Well, somebody has to
teach these kids to respect their elders and the Guildhouse! And this little kid
here seems to think he's graduated to the big leagues already. Really, Attila,
should we be letting little Azaghal off that easily?"
Azaghal's look of belligerence relaxed just a bit when Attila smiled. "Come on
Wolf, he's already been in the adepts, and you heard him about the FE. Once you get
past 10 you have earned your scars. Leave him alone." He paused to look at Azaghal,
but then looked quizzically back towards the Wolf. "And just what did you do to poor
Cyril? Wasn't it enough that you made him carry a 'Zena Warrior-Princess' backpack
to the fights last week?"
"A backpack! That hardly even counts," Azaghal exclaimed, "when he was still
pulling this crap on me..."
"Oh, calm down, Azzy, I'll leave you alone," Spirewolf snapped. "Well, it really
isn't much. It isn't like the stuff that Gron and Baron Stonewall used to pull on
us. Remember that, don't you?"
Attila just shook his head and smiled weakly. "Oh yeah, who can forget it?
Taught to respect our elders we were," he noted with a nod and a wink at Azaghal. "I
think my least favorite was when Gron and the Baron tied me to the flagpole outside
the guildhouse. Those dang kids came from all over the neighborhood with feathers
and I was helpless."
Spirewolf nearly fell out of his seat with laughter. "You do know that Balliol,
the one who always played at being innocent of all this stuff, snuck around the
neighborhood handing out feathers, don't you?"
"Balliol? No, I hadn't heard that. I HAD heard that the young basher on the
team had been seen with feathers..."
"Uh... Nope, hadn't heard that," commented the basher while moving quickly on.
"Usually they just made us serve them and do goofy stuff. Attila, didn't Hardrada
make you eat everything for a week using a long spear?"
"He did. And those things are not toothpicks! And I had to cut my food with a
greataxe."
"Greataxe?! You got lucky! The Baron tried to make me cut my food with a maul!
But that didn't work so well. I think it annoyed him. I carried his gear to the
arena for the next two weeks."
Attila couldn't help laughing at the memories. "They made all the rookies serve
the champions." After pausing a second, the Duelmaster continued. "But don't change
the subject, Wolf! Nomad will get seriously annoyed if you hurt one of his
gladiators. Gron and the Baron may have enjoyed a bit of hazing, but it was never
overly wicked. Where is young Cyril?"
It was at that point that Azaghal burst out laughing. Following the small
warrior's gaze, Attila saw Cyril enter the tavern and head there way.
Approaching the table, Cyril started what had seemed to be a prepared speech.
"Oh, great Duelmaster! A lowly initiate like I am wishes to serve you. May I bring
you a mug of ale?" And with that he lifted his skirt and curtsied.
Momentarily stunned, Attila took a moment to speak. "May the gods forgive you,
Wolf! No! Cyril, I wish my wenches to be... wenches! You can fetch me a mug in the
Guildhall! Go back and get changed before the whole town sees you that way!"
With a grateful look the young warrior turned on his heel and sprinted out the
door, ponytails flying out behind him. Spirewolf, Azaghal and Blue Marble were all
nearly falling off their seats with laughter. Attila just shook his head. He was
very glad he was no longer an initiate.
When he could stop laughing, Blue Marble stood up. "I gonna g' home. Cyril...
dress!" Laughing, he stumbled a bit as he got up, slipping on some of the ale he
had earlier spilt on the floor. His head banged against a post with a metallic thud.
Apparently unbothered, Blue Marble headed out the door.
As Marble headed out, Spirewolf commented dryly, "Good thing he always wears
that thing on his noggin."
Attila and Azaghal looked at each other. Eventually Azaghal had to ask.
"Marble's hasn't been an init for a long time. Are you ever going to tell him he
doesn't have to wear a pot on his head anymore?"

SPY REPORT
Busy, busy, busy, lots of things happening in SHADOWSPIRE this turn, and let's
start with a look at some of the teams. It seems the training can make the
difference, as OTTO'S DINER is pushed out of top team by WARMASTERS, who came from
9th with a 5-0-0 this turn. I want to know who's buying the drinks for who tonight
at The Warty Toad, seeing as SUPERIOR FORCES NT's 26-24-0 has earned them 3rd place
in the ranks. Our condolences (or sneers, as the case may be) go out to MONSTER
MANUAL for their drop to 15th from 3rd. A 2-3-0 can do that. The WARMASTERS guild
has had a 5-0-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where
this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, ARIOCH fought EVELYN WAUGH and gained 21
points and contributed to OF WOLF AND MAN's 4-1-0. EVELYN WAUGH has lost to ARIOCH,
falling 16 points, while helping make LITERATE LOONS a 1-4-0 turn. This turn ATTILA
KEENBLADE challenged CHILI SURPRISE in what was SHADOWSPIRE's Title bout. And all
eyes were on CHILI SURPRISE this turn as he ascended to the throne of Duelmaster.
SHADOWSPIRE has a new victor! Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top
team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Warty Toad until they win. Maybe?
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. CAPITAL CARTEL has cause to stand tall, as
they were SHADOWSPIRE's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to
beat. And avoiding CAPITAL CARTEL more than any other team we find LA PENTARCHIE.
SHADOWSPIRE, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports
fans, take notice that SERAFIN GAWAIN from THE RED BLADES was SHADOWSPIRE's most
challenged warrior this turn. Tsk, tsk, tsk. TITUS, does your manager know you're
challenging down 19 points to fight SERAFIN GAWAIN from THE RED BLADES? It pains me
to see warriors take advantage of the system like this. TITUS won victory over
SERAFIN GAWAIN, as if it surprises anyone. LIMP IN from CAPITAL CARTEL took a risk
this turn by bravely challenging up 27 points in a challenge against LIBERIUS. Well,
LIMP IN was overcame by LIBERIUS, but LIMP IN gained 3 in recognition for his
efforts. Thank goodness for small favors. In a brave attempt, CHIMERA from MONSTER
MANUAL challenged up 20 points to fight SPIREWOLF from the DRAGONBANE GUILD stable.
CHIMERA perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he lost to SPIREWOLF and ended up
with 65 recognition points.
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. A farewell moment, if you please, LIAM O'FLAHERTY of LITERATE LOONS has
been sent to the Dark Arena, and was carried out on his shield. The grave that THE
RED BLADES had dug for KID CHARLEMAGNE may yet be filled with the body of HIGH ELF.
Seldom are the likes of this to be seen. KID CHARLEMAGNE lives still!
Congratulations go out to SUPERIOR FORCES NT, with THE SUPERIOR CAT revenging a
bloodfeud against SCRAWNIE RONNIE of UNHOLY KNIGHTS. We'd like to remind certain
teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's
considered rude.
Thought for the day, a new sword shines bright, but the notched sword sings the
sweetest. Always good to rest in SHADOWSPIRE, but never good to wear out my welcome.
