DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
After paying off the matchmaker with a fortune in someone else's gold Tripwire
sat back in his luxury booth and watched as Arioch took the sands. He was armored up
as usual with his thick broadsword and large shield held high as he raised his arms
in defiance. Across from him was the impressive Hummingbird, a warrior that Arioch
had beaten in the past and the current Duelmaster. Arioch had promised a quick
victory but Tripwire wasn't so sure. He had never really looked impressive in any of
his victories.
The gong sounded and the warrior Hummingbird literally flew into action.
Tripwire slapped his palm into his face as he watched the scimitar of the striker
absolutely destroy Arioch in quick fashion. In under a minute the striker had thrown
8 critically nasty attacks, twisting and turning, slipping parries and cutting with
awesome power while Arioch just stood there trying to use his shield to absorb the
blows. The attacks had nearly driven the desperate Wall of Steel to his knees before
Tripwire shook his head and turned away from the massacre.
The announcer's voice yelled out as the fight was over quickly, "And the winner
and NEW Duelmaster! Arioch!!" Stunned, the psionic turned and looked out over the
sands and sure enough Arioch was standing over an angry Hummingbird who was cradling
a broken left arm, a shattered scimitar littering the sands at his feet. The bloody
Arioch didn't even know where he was after the beating so just stood there as his
name was called out.
"At least there was a Of Wolf and Man Duelmaster." Tripwire thought. With this
team that was something to brag about for sure. Now on to deciding how the heck he
was going to hold on?
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, SHADOWSPIRE? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Now keep the taverns open late tonight,
for there are sorrows to drown for CLAN LONGBEARD, whose 3-2-0 this turn dropped them
by 5 into 8th. Ha! SUPERIOR FORCES NT turned their 3-2-0 turn into a 7th place rank
in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Gee,
I'm impressed, a 3-1-0 is nice, but don't get cocky, NEVERQUEST, the Fates teach
humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see
FAN ZHEN win a fight and gain 28 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, HEINRIK beat A.E.
HOUSMAN and A.E. HOUSMAN lost 15 points. You're breakin' my heart. Looks like
SHADOWSPIRE has some guts at least, ARIOCH the Duelmaster was this turn's
most-challenged warrior. YEAR OF THE CAT challenged SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster for a
shot at the throne. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as YEAR OF THE CAT
takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh.
Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and bribes, how else do you think some of these guys
win their fights? Skill? Ha!
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. SUPERIOR FORCES NT, I suppose you'll be glad to know
you were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you?
And it looks like DRAGONBANE GUILD avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of
would be losers, if you ask me. Hmph. I suspect either a 21 will or a 21 ego on
this one, but HUGH CAPET has challenged up by 27 in an attempt against AUGUST. But
here's a pretty tale--HUGH CAPET did lose the fight, but gained 3 worth of
recognition. Some long shots can pay off, I guess. Looks like time for laurels or
hemlock, LOW AND AWAY was challenged by KID CHARLEMAGNE, who was ranked 37 points
below him. And sure, KID CHARLEMAGNE lost alright, but gained 10 recognition for his
pains. And pains they may indeed be! Now here's guts and stupidity all rolled into
one, JUSTICE THOMAS challenged up 27 to take on KISS MY GRITS of OTTO'S DINER. Not
that I'm surprised or anything, but JUSTICE THOMAS was beat by KISS MY GRITS, leaving
the latter lower for recognition points.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Bye bye, warrior, bye bye... CHIMERA, a glorious
11-18-1 fighter, has passed away. Gee, too bad MONSTER MANUAL. The bigger they are,
as they say. And what I say is that FAN ZHEN had better watch out for MONSTER
MANUAL, seeing as CHIMERA felled he this turn. We're all going to die in the end, so
why worry if the fate catches up with you sooner that later?
There's got to be a better place in SHADOWSPIRE to get a drink than The Dripping
Blade! Any suggestions? Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so
nice! So nyaaah! Glad to see the back of this place-- Snide Clemens

How long will it last? Will I stay here for ever? Again minced by a youngster...
What could I do? -- Year of The Cat
I knew that. Agent is using some undercover guys to pay the warriors of the decent
honest fair-play managers. I would like one turn without one of my guys handing a
victory to the Cartel. -- Le Pentarque
WTG Arioch -- I don't believe we have had many WSs on the throne. Good work. --
Grimm
Well, I can't fall out of the CCs thank god, because I know Grimm was requesting me
for night fighting. -- Ornery
Eliad -- That maniac Woodstock and I were working on that tactic. Time to get after-
burners on my doghouse. -- Snoopy
Well, the new recruits won't arrive until next turn, I bet, I am trying to get faster
mail, just doesn't happen. -- Grimm
Dragon -- Did you feel that slow tapping on your leg? That was me. -- DDT
Budweiser -- Yeeesh. Thanks for pouring out the skills when I popped you open. --
Notaxestexas
Smacky Bunny -- I know you hate me. Momma always said "let 'em play; they wear
themselves out." -- Justice Bunny Smacker Thomas
Convicted Thief -- Ed? -- Invisnoble
Hummingbird -- That was a lesson, I guess. A painful one, but a lesson nontheless.
-- Arioch
Busch -- Interesting fight, look forward to meeting you again in the future. --
Shaviola
Brown Betty -- Really? I was shocked I swung first. -- Lariton
Briarsmile -- Hmm, that desperation tactic seemed to work nicely. -- Grobbulus
Chupucasuperior -- Bah! You shouldn't get to learn that much when you do that! --
Zevran
Midnight -- Boy you sure like to party and you sure know how to crash one too. I was
supposed to win that one did you not read the note I slipped into your robe? -- Brand
Lord Protector Spirewolf -- Thanks for the sparring lessons, I will put the new
skills to use. -- Duchess of Erat
Goulash -- I almost had ya, I will have to remember to breathe after I have won next
time. -- Ctuchik
Cicero -- Well, now doesn't that just suck. -- Scrawnie Ronnie
DDT -- You're a slippery one, ain't ya gus. -- Dragon
The Monsantis -- Welcome to you and your band of gladiators with the names I do not
understand. What is the name of your manager. -- Gentleben, manager of Unholy
Knights
P.S. Nice 4-1 turn with the one being a DA.
P.P.S. You do know you are allowed to lose a fight or two, just a thought.
Arioch -- Congrats on the throne. -- Unholy Knights
Limp In -- Talent, schmalent. It's all about the benzos. (wink) -- Outlaw Pete
Ligdish Bang -- More ligdish than bang, eh? Hope your stablemates aren't gonna give
you a hard time losing to a rosa lita. -- Rosalita
Nyderawyn -- You've got to be more patient if you want to see some tricks. -- Magic
Rat
The Superior Cat -- Welcome back! Didn't know you would return or else I would have
avoided you. -- Bobby Jean
Ligdish Bang "the manly" -- Perhaps the outcome will be different the next time we
meet on the sands. Till then, your drinks are on me. -- Pink Bunny
Jehgan -- Are you familiar with rabbits' breeding habbits... -- Smacky Bunny
Miller -- What does it take to actually hurt you??? -- Floppy Longears
D'Vinn -- Arghhhh! Kill one skunk and I start stinking up the place. Where is the
tomato juice!?! -- Fimnar
Fippy Darkpaw -- Thought I would be an easy win huh? <chuckle> -- Elthor
Gorby Bugmuncher -- Hope the studying and bed rest did you some good. -- Heinrik
Iglpigl -- And I thought my name was bad. -- Naryak
Apis Fremo -- Went for the kill a little quick, didn't ya? -- Jehgan
The word is you guys want a hand-written spy report, not the golems, when you hit
your one hundredth turn. And "Why not?" is what I say. Looks like I might be doing
it, though you can request someone else if you csn't stand the thought.
But what I'm getting to is, what would you like in your spy report? Something on the
order of the current reports written on the Isle, or a pull-out-the-stops special
deal, tailored just for you? Personal and team feuds noted, maybe? Comments on the
habits and abilities of the gladiators on the sands? What about down-challenges?
The golems always speak of that with disapproval, but it's a legal, vaild technique,
so how do you want that handled in your spy report?
And what about manager names? I'd be glad to refer to managers by name, if I know
the names. I've been studying on that, but there are still a couple of gapes in my
list: Who manages Team Sludge? The rest (as of last turn), I think I've got.
Let me know what you want. I'll be reading the personals with close attention from
now till then. -- Larkin, Roving Spy Reporter
P.S. Or would it sound better to call myself Spy Reporter at Large?
Chimera--
Old Chimera was fantastical,
A half step away from heretical,
He'd plea to his gods,
"If you are, why the wounds?
All the help I need now, is medical."
--A.E. Housman
Arioch -- Congrats, DM! -- The Red Blades
Blue Marble -- Even better than expected. Was that a new weapon choice? -- Regina
Spectre
Gregorr -- I've been hoping to see that. Thanks for all the skills, old man. --
Serafin
Viridio -- As usual, it was a pleasure to see you. -- K.C.

BLOODGAMES at the SUMMER FACE-TO-FACE
Back by popular demand, we will be having Bloodgames at the Summer FTF! For those of
you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the
arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several
warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the
Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once
said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die
for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There
will be two different arenas:
DM 98: for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies, and
DM 99: for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds
Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions:
BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting
style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All is 84 points, 3-21, as usual.)
DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat darker
before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and spirited.
The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying warrior. Even
at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur.
REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters.
CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In DM 98, there no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds.
For DM 99, warriors may not change their strategy from round to round (to make it fair
for those who could not attend the F-t-F). There will be no DA challenges.
TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your
rollups and strategies by Wednesday, July 7, else they are due by 9pm on Friday, at
the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular tournament.
MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.
ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.
NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of
Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.
FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than
one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49.
AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of
Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames
T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills.
The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion.
Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th
through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number
of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these
six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if
necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie.
A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills.
The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and
Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn
with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the
Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts.
AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila
Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three surviving
gladiators in each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters Games. Any
special training required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters
combat will be conducted before transfer into A.D. Astute managers will note that
this means a slim, but possible chance that a warrior designed from scratch will
survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places, and go on to glory in A.D.
That warrior could be yours!
The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
