Restructuring at the Company Picnic
The wagon was similar to the common supply wagon; it was strongly made and
heavily reinforced. However, instead being two meters wide and four and a half
meters long, the bed was merely 1.5 meters wide and 3 meters long. It had the same
thick-planked, high-walled sides, reinforced with bands of dull steel. A thick
coating of tar was smeared underneath its bottom to increase its sturdiness and make
the bed watertight. It had the same tall bonnet of bright white linen, water-
resistant and durable, soaked in clear, aromatic oil imported from the Fenarchan
Isles. The wide wooden hoops holding the bonnet's shape were inserted into iron
rings fastened to the sideboards and secured with rawhide strips.
Its thick iron rims rolled silently on the grassy plain outside of Shadowspire.
Like its bigger brethren, the front wheels were smaller in diameter, a mere meter
across, to allow for sharper turns. This had been demonstrated earlier when the
wagon had been pulled off the Tsaumarn trail, just after the Telorinthe fork had
disappeared into the brown and green horizon. Only the creak of the axles, the
occasional snort from the mules, and the murmurs and clucks from the driver, perched
on his seat above the jockey box, made any noise.
The wagon had trundled steadily southeast, toward the white-peaked mountain
chain looming over the plain. There had been no other travelers to notice or remark
on its departure from the trail. Havoc preferred it that way. He kept swiveling his
head in all directions, urging the mules in a muted voice and trying to watch all
directions at once.
A sudden dip in the terrain seized his attention. Pulling the mules to a
gradual stop, Havoc rose from his seat and scanned the area. A small stream, fed
from a nearby spring, gurgled slowly northwest and quickly disappeared underground.
Havoc nodded to himself, apparently satisfied, and climbed down from the seat. He
pulled his shortsword from its scabbard and hammered vigorously on the wagon side.
"Get up! Get outa there, you Nancys!"
A cramped, grumbling chorus rose from inside. The rear flap was thrown back.
Four men, armed and armored, clumsily stumbled out of the wagon and assembled in a
loose semi-circle in front of Havoc. All of them had dried blood splattered in
various places, and in various degrees, across their various armors. All of them
moved stiffly, painfully, and slowly. None appeared happy.
"Okay," growled Havoc, "we're all here." He glared at each of them closely.
"Take that tough look off of your face, Apis, or I'll drag you all the way back to
Shadowspire. What's left of you, anyway."
Apis Fremo shifted uncomfortably and looked away toward the shallow gully where
the stream burbled softly.
"This is what I want," said Havoc, "first, everyone gets the supplies outta the
wagon. Proto, when that's done I want you and Apis to fan out and scour the ground
for firewood. Dried dung will work nicely." Havoc shot a hard look at Apis.
"Stay in sight of each other and the wagon," Havoc cautioned. "I'm not that
familiar with this region, but I know we're not the only things out here that like
meat!" Proto nodded; Plumbeus smiled stupidly. Apis grabbed Plumbeus by his elbow
and steered him around.
"Except you, Consector," said Havoc sharply. "Can't let a popular fella like you
get his hands dirty."
Consector, half way toward the wagon's rear gate, turned and faced Havoc and
smiled broadly.
"You get the wood we brought, once it's unloaded, and start a fire." Havoc
gestured. "Let's set up camp on the other side of that short creek."
Consector dropped his eyes and frowned into the ground.
"Let's hurry, ladies! I'm hungry -- and I get mean when I'm hungry!" Havoc
dismissed them with a curt wave of his short sword. As the men moved away, he turned
and began to unhitch the mules from their harness.
* * * * *
The black sky glittered brightly. A sliver of moonlight began to climb higher
up the horizon. The fire blazed steadily; the charred remains of gnawed bones and
the hoops from a couple of tall kegs were barely discernable. A deep, dark pot lay
half in the flames. Steam rose as the liquid inside bubbled energetically. The
hobbled mules, their thirst sated, grazed nearby.
The men sat around the fire, industriously scrubbing at their armor or
sharpening their blades. Occasionally one or another would pause to gulp deeply from
a modest and unadorned pewter goblet. They seemed more cheerful, at least until Apis
flinched. The other gladiators, one by one, glanced up and noticed Havoc staring
down at them from the lip of the narrow gully. They stopped moving, almost stopped
breathing, as Havoc silently glided down toward them.
His steps were smooth and light; Apis noted Havoc's balance, poise, and speed
and shook his head in envy. Consector spat nervously over his left shoulder. He
suddenly suspected that Havoc could've easily attacked and defeated their whole team
without exerting himself. A quick glance at his companions reaffirmed this opinion
as they all eyed Havoc with apprehension.
"Well ladies," smiled Havoc, his back to the fire. "How did you enjoy our
little picnic?"
No one moved or answered. Havoc snorted and offered an insincere smile.
"You girls aren't much on conversation, are you? I guess we should just get to
it."
Havoc shook his large, thick-fingered hands in front of his broad, mailed chest.
A large, two-handed goblet suddenly rattled between his palms. The gladiators,
momentarily startled, now warily studied the goblet.
"Here's how this works. There's ten silver denarii in here. Eight are from
Shadowspire. Two are from Osksi."
Havoc paused to meet each gladiator's eyes, one by one.
"You all get paid one silver denarii after every fight..." Havoc paused, his
brow furrowed in thought. "Oh, that's right," muttered Havoc to himself.
He held the goblet with his left hand and reached into a slot in his wide belt
with his right. He pulled a silver denarii and tossed it to Consector, who caught it
in reflex.
"And if any of you children earn any special arena awards, well--" Havoc
gestured toward Consector, who blushed. "Chaos rewards its own." He moved forward
slowly three paces and stopped. He held the goblet at arm's length.
"Each of you will reach inside and grab one, and I mean ONE, coin. Keep your
damn hands closed until I tell you."
The men looked at each other and rose to their feet. Apis leaned forward first
and plunged his hand into the goblet's wide mouth. The coins rattled and scraped as
Apis swirled them with his fingers. He chose one and pulled it out in his fist.
Protomorphus went next, and then Consector. Havoc rolled his eyes and sighed loudly
as Consector explained the process to Plumbeus again. Finally, the men stood
shoulder to shoulder in a semi-circle in front of Havoc.
"All right, open 'em!" commanded Havoc.
Three men held out their hands, palms up. Plumbeus, carefully watching the
others, cautiously mimicked their gesture.
"All right, what do we have here?" Havoc briskly glanced into each hand. He
lifted his head and looked up into Plumbeus's wide eyes.
"Okay, buddy," grunted Havoc, "you win the prize: a special night-time training
session." Plumbeus smiled broadly while his teammates frowned.
"That's the prize?" whined Apis.
"What's going on? What's the big deal?" muttered Plumbeus quizzically.
"It's simple," answered Havoc, "so simple everyone here can understand. The
Arcane Kid is tired of reading about you losers every time he opens his morning mail.
Ruins his digestion. Just for once, he'd like to read something positive about
Archaic Chaos!"
Protomorphus shook his head in disgust.
"Wait one damned minute!! We're out here playing with ourselves because he
wants better reading material to go with his eggs and bacon?!"
"Thaaaats right!" roared Havoc. "And we're going to have ANOTHER drawing after
the next round of fights, and the next, and the next, until I get a team here in
Shadowspire that's worth keepin' around!"
Havoc glared at them for a few minutes. The men were silent. Apis looked
nervously at his teammates. Protomorphus appeared nauseas. Consector seemed to be
holding his breath. Only Plumbeus seemed pleased; he kept turning his silver denarii
over and over again in his big hands.
"Now get in your blankets and get to sleep," Havoc sneered. "I wanna get on
back on the trail by sunrise."
Havoc wheeled and slipped smoothly up the narrow, water-worn ravine,
disappearing in the shadow of the wagon. The men were frozen in place. They heard
the creak of the wagon as Havoc entered; they heard the flap of the bonnet strike the
wagon as Havoc yanked it down.
Only Plumbeus slept well that night.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Well, Arioch should have avoided, if you want the advice of a much too old
warrior... Anyway, I'm here, and quite happy to get my invite before reaching the
infamous 50 mark. When I entered our beautiful arena, I had on my shoulders a huge
pile of managerial hopes. I was supposed to hack a bloody way through a sea of
Scums. Alas, I spent most of my career one-hitted by fast midgets. How did I
survive is a mystery, but as a testimony of my short stay here I will let the carved
figure of a screaming Cat smashed by a big hammer.
Good luck to the next Duelmaster!
Goodbye, Shadowspire!
Year of the Cat
SPY REPORT
If you were disturbed from your beauty rest only to have to watch a bunch of
SHADOWSPIRE brutes like you, you'd be grouchy, too. Later days, SUMMERBORN, since
SUPERIOR FORCES NT took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. With any
luck, I can sneak into The Swinging Aardvark and join OTTO'S DINER's celebration over
their good record this turn. 7th place, not bad. If this keeps up, CAPITAL CARTEL,
you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 7 in the rankings? Now
let's all watch WARMASTERS' heads swell from their 5-0-0 this turn. Haa ha ha ha!
Big shots, big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see HUGH
CAPET win a fight and gain 31 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, FIPPY DARKPAW beat
BERSERKER and BERSERKER lost 16 points. You're breakin' my heart. Looks like
SHADOWSPIRE has some guts at least, YEAR OF THE CAT the Duelmaster was this turn's
most-challenged warrior. TITUS challenged SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster for a shot at the
throne. And it's out with the old, in with the new, as TITUS takes the Title and
last week's bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. I'm not in a very good mood
today, but why am I telling you this? You want to know what's new, don't you,
SHADOWSPIRE?
My mother always told me, 'If you don't have anything nice to say, start
talking.' I loved that woman. LITERATE LOONS, I suppose you'll be glad to know you
were this turn's most avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And
it looks like WARMASTERS avoided them the most this turn. What a pack of would be
losers, if you ask me. Hmph. Looks like time for laurels or hemlock, SERAFIN GAWAIN
was challenged by AVERROES, who was ranked 52 points below her. Not that I'm
surprised or anything, but AVERROES was dealt death by SERAFIN GAWAIN, leaving the
latter lower for recognition points. I suspect either a 21 will or a 21 ego on this
one, but DUCHESS OF ERAT has challenged up by 34 in an attempt against AUGUST. My
sides still hurt from laughing about AUGUST losing and giving DUCHESS OF ERAT 29
points of recognition. Ha ha ha ha!!
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for SHADOWSPIRE's
morgue. More variety. I could say I saw this coming, but so could anyone else.
Anyway, this turn it came. BRAND's 8-12-0 has earned him the Dark Arena. Gee, OF
WOLF AND MAN, ain't it past due for sending LARITON Dark Arena? What took ol'
'10-6-0' so long? Hope? Ha ha aha ha! I could say I saw this coming, but so could
anyone else. Anyway, this turn it came. GROBBULUS' 12-12-0 has earned him the Dark
Arena. Whoa! I'll even buy BROWN BETTY a drink tonight! Anyone who can come back
from the Dark Arena, I want to be on hers good side! RODENT CLAN has cause to pause
today, as COTTON FRAIL was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the
best of moods, I'll wager. Bye bye, warrior, bye bye... AVERROES, a glorious
13-10-1 fighter, has passed away. Gee, too bad DARQUE AGES. And what a stunning
loss we have here, boys and girls, HEAD BAND of CAPITAL CARTEL has added the final
loss to his 15-11-2. Tee hee! Seriously now, is it really honorable for SERAFIN
GAWAIN from THE RED BLADES to kill AVERROES and give DARQUE AGES the chance to
bloodfeud? Mmmm, could be. We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the
fate catches up with you sooner that later?
I was about to buy a new quill pen the other day, but some fighter took it for
an epee. Forgive me for writing with a dagger. Phlllt! Just had to do that before
I leave the fine city of SHADOWSPIRE. I feel much better now. Paste this one in
your scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come this winter-- Snide Clemens

Mr. Tripwire -- What a fine DM Column about Arioch. Well done. -- Agent and The
Capital Cartel
And congratulations to Year Of The Cat, LP's and Shadowspire's newest Duelmaster.
Kudos. -- Agent
Kid Charlemagne of The Red Blades -- It is easier to hit a curve ball low and away
with a bat than it is with a sword, wouldn't you say? And most can't do it with a
bat! Thanks for the challenge, though. I needed that win. -- Low And Away
Virginia Wolf -- Supplination always loses to pronation. I am glad you were there to
supplicate yourself. -- Pronate
Phillip K. -- What kind of lucky dung was that? Why, I could whip you with one hand
tied behind my back! Well, er, ah, sometimes I could. Yeah. -- Head Band (obviously
wearing the wrong color for that match)
Martin Luther -- You should have stayed Catholic! So take that! -- Book Mark
Elilad -- I hate philanthropists! They just give away money I could have had in my
own pocket. What bums! And I hate Elilad more than most! I do. -- Limp In (Who
obviously should have gone all in instead)
La Pentarchie -- I just want you to know that, out of courtesy, Low And Away will not
challenge your Year Of The Cat. (I may be dumb, but I ain't that dumb!) -- Agent
DM and Lord Protector Year of the Cat -- Congrats on the throne and the graduation,
it couldn't have happened to a nicer guy... Okay, it could have, but congrats any
way. -- Unholy Knights
Summerborn -- I guess had you been named Winterborn you would not be doing as HOT,
you are having a fine run, let's see if we can't cool you down some. -- Unholy
Knights, it is very cold in hell contrary to popular belief
Larkin, Roving Spy Reporter -- I am whole heartedly interested in having you write
the spy report for Shadowspire. Not only is it a great idea, I think it will add so
much more to the atmosphere to the arena. I have read many of your stories in other
arenas and I would be most grateful to have you add your writing skills to our
newsletter. I also like the idea of you adding as much interesting facts and
quirkyness to it, I say go for broke and use as much of your own self into it. I can
not think of anyone here that would not want you writing our newsletter. --
Gentleben, mgr Unholy Knights
It's supposed to be a one-shot deal for turn 100! -- Larkin, looking hunted
Larkin -- What Gentleben said. -- Unholy Knights, warriors of Gentleben
Goulash -- Mess with my boys you mess with me, I will keep my eye on you. -- Duchess
of Erat
Musse pig -- You pig. -- Brand
Vaca -- There is more of that where that came from, now tell me, where are the rest
of your team mates, and why did you eat all the Peeps? -- Ctuchik
Magic Rat -- Watch me pull a rat out of my hat, now watch me pull a win out of my
@$$. -- Scrawnie Ronnie
The cheerleaders are here let the games begin!
Tripwire -- Maybe um I can go with next time you visit the matchmaker's office? --
Action
Chop Suey -- I'm still working on that parry with head tactic. I mean you can do it
with a fist and my head is harder than most of the fists it has encountered. -- DDT
Sam Adams -- Thanks for the nap. I slept like a baby. -- Notaxestexas
Kiss My Grits -- I don't know what possessed me to start a fight 19 minutes into the
dance. -- Justice Thomas
Chuck the Hammer -- I should have thrown that sand in your face but the Arenamaster
scowled a bit when I grabbed it. But I got other tricks. -- Life Patent
Budweiser -- Guess I'm just a little more slippery than you. Good one. --
Invisinoble
Cariec Tom -- Many thanks for the win! All I needed was a couple more political
points and you were kind enough to provide them! Many thanks! Now all I need to do
is figure out how I am supposed to use this maul that someone seems to think I
prefer. Maul? And a lunge tactic. Bashers use mauls. Have you ever seen anyone
lunge with a maul? I'm a bit perplexed by the whole idea. -- Lord Protector Attila
Keenblade, 8th Lord Protector from the Dragonbane Guild
I saw someone try to lunge with a warflail once. Of course, she died. -- Larkin
Lord Protector Year of the Cat -- Congratulations on your well earned graduation! --
Attila and the Guild
Plumbeus -- Welcome to the arena and thanks for the nice start. -- Jager von Drachen
Regina Spectre -- It was nothing against the Blades, you were just there and looking
vulnerable. What's a guy supposed to do? -- Azaghal
Berserker -- Oh, my head. Stinky challenge. -- Blue Marble
Gorby Bugmuncher -- That did not go according to plan at all. -- Cyril
Duchess of Erat -- See, now that is what those skills were for! Indeed, you did put
them to good use! -- Lord Protector Spirewolf
Heinrik--
There once was a boy named Heinrik,
Who thought his fighting ways were slick.
He'd prance and he'd preen,
To boost his esteem,
Though at heart, knew he was a hick.
--A.E. Housman
Justice Thomas -- Hatred has nothing to do with it. We'll have to dance again, and
we'll see how it goes. I can lead again, since you seem to like that. -- Smacky
Bunny
Twice. Twice in a row. Selena Spectre. Go clobber someone else, please! -- Average
Joe
Well, me, I was challenging, so I can't whine, but let's say I won't annoy Fippy
anymore... -- Napalm
I don't know why, but I like that Iglpgl name. -- Le Pentarque
Jehgan -- 'Went for the kill a little quick'? I don't think so. I like things fast.
-- Apis Fremo
Shaviola -- You did well, but realize that you were lucky, right? -- Apis
Superieee Beastie -- Wow! I didn't think there was much you could teach me. I was
wrong. -- Consector
Jager Von Drachen -- I will crumble your head like a stale cookie! -- Plumbeus
Pit Fiend -- I was distracted; that's what it was! I checked the board and my name
was misspelled. That threw me off my game! -- Protomorphus
Congratulations to Year of the Cat on both the title and graduation! -- Vanek,
manager of Warmasters
Welcome Monsantis to this wonderful arena. We hope you enjoy your stay here. --
Vanek
Tripwire -- Nice DM column. I enjoyed reading it. -- Vanek
Wow, that really sucked! I am pretty unhappy that after 88 consecutive turns, my
last turn didn't get processed. I know accidents happen so hopefully it was a one
time thing. Gregorr's 7 turn streak of popularity leader also ended. Watch out
boys, he's mad, too, and wants to start a new streak. Hopefully the Warmasters
respond with a great turn. I look forward to seeing you all on the sands again next
turn! -- Vanek
Red Blades -- Go ahead and keep allowing your warriors to talk smack. I'm going to
make them eat every one of them. See you on the sands my friend. -- Vanek
Ettin -- I have had my eye on the other bashers for a while. -- Serafin
Low and Away -- You weren't MY first choice. I was trying to do a favor for a
friend. -- K.C.
Azaghal -- BM put you up to that? Nice challenge. Much better payoff for me this
time. -- Regina
Superiorbane -- The boss said something to me about wheet E's. Whatever. Nice
fight. -- Shillelagh
Avg Joe -- Tough break for you. Nice couple of turns for me. -- Selena
YOTC, Atilla Keenblade -- Congrats Lord Protectors! -- The Red Blades
Evelyn Waugh -- Nice job on your part, I didn't think you could do enough damage to
take me out. Funny thing... when I was lying on my back I saw up your mailskirt...
you're a dude, dude. Only a limey would name their boy Evelyn. -- Xorn
