TEAM SPOTLIGHT
A New Resolve
The late morning sunlight was bright and hot. Apis Fremo, his shadow pacing him
on his right, limped steadily through the thigh-high grass. He looked up
occasionally, but generally kept his gaze focused on the area immediately in front of
him. His narrow face was haggard; his breath was steady but slightly labored.
Consector and Protomorphus walked in single file behind Apis, who towered over
them. They were spread out by roughly three meters, and they all walked at the same
slow, relentless pace. Their eyes roved restlessly left and right, watching the
grass intently for any tell-tale of danger.
Plumbeus lumbered to their left. His elongated and distorted shadow fell across
the trampled grasses behind them. Unlike his companions, Plumbeus didn't appear
fatigued or nervous. He strode forward heavily, but easily. His muscles rippled
rhythmically as he walked with his battle axe hung across his broad shoulders, his
hands draped over either side of its handle. He contemplated the horizon and
whistled softly to himself.
Suddenly the tall grass gave way to a small oval-shaped clearing, roughly 15
meters across at its widest point, and 10 meters across at its narrowest. The grass
had been pushed down and trampled heavily. Deep gashes in the ground gave evidence
of a mighty struggle. There were no carcasses, no definite tracks, and no spoor to
tell more of the tale.
Apis limped to a stop and breathed a deep sigh, shifting his weight to favor his
left leg. Consector walked up and stood at his left side, Protomorphus stood at his
right. They stayed just within the edge of the trampled oval and scanned the area
carefully. Meanwhile, Plumbeous tromped over to stand at Consector's left and looked
up at Apis, puzzled.
"Wha's the matter? Leg still hurtin'?" Apis looked down and squinted fiercely
into the slanting sunlight.
"Just keep the hell away from me!" Apis barked.
Plumbeus looked at Consector apologetically. Consector shook his head and
offered a lop-sided grin before turning to face Apis.
"This doesn't make sense to me," Consector gestured around the oval.
"Nor me," volunteered Protomorphus. "Where are the beasts that did this?"
"Or the beast that carried them off," winced Apis as he slowly lowered himself
on one knee. "These aren't tracks that I recognize." He placed his large hand over
a blurred, circular gouge in the ground, but he barely covered half. "But whatever
it was, it was huge!"
"There might be more of 'em around, don't you think?" Protomorphus asked
nervously. "We should get going. We can't be far away by now!"
"We're not," grunted Apis, grimacing as he stood again.
"You want me to take point?" Consector asked as he began to move forward. Apis
grabbed his arm and ignored Consector's startled grab for his sword. Shaking his
head, Apis frowned and pointed in a slightly different direction. All of them swung
their heads to peer after Apis's finger.
"Hey! I see flags wavin'!!" blared Plumbeus. "We must be near Shadowspire!"
"You think??!!" Apis snorted in disgust and hitched his wide swordbelt with his
thumbs. "I TOLD you guys I knew where it was!"
"Yeah, yeah, you told us," Protomorphus acknowledged, "You just forgot to tell
us it would take so long to get back!"
Plumbeus boomed a laugh that startled his companions and seemed to push against
the grass itself. Apis clenched his teeth and, again, looked down narrowly at
Plumbeus. Consector smiled.
"What's important," chuckled Consector, "is that we made it back in one piece."
"We're not back yet," protested Protomorphus. "Besides..." He gestured at Apis
with a quick shrug. Out of the corner of his eye, Apis caught the movement and
grimaced.
"I guess getting hurt by your own team mate doesn't count, huh?" Apis growled.
"Hey, that python was pretty damned big!" Protomorphus chortled. "You should be
glad that Plumby was around to bash its head in!"
"If all he hit was the stupid python, I'd have been VERY happy!" shouted Apis
Fremo.
Consector and Protomorphus grabbed each other by the shoulders and arms, hooting
and giggling like schoolboys. Plumbeus looked at them and smiled benevolently.
Apis turned his back on them all and squinted determinedly at the horizon.
"Seriously though," panted Consector after a couple of minutes, wiping his eyes
with the back of his hand, "that thing had scales like I've never seen before."
"Yeah," rumbled Protomorphus as he fought back another laugh. "Our blades
didn't even scratch that thing!"
"Whatever!" snapped Apis with a wave of his hand. "The important thing is we're
back. Tonight I can get a hot bath and start healing up."
"Yes," nodded Consector, "and just in time, too. Our next match is in three
days."
"Really?" muttered Protomorphus. A surprised, uncomfortable look quickly
settled across his wide face. "I still haven't had time to practice with that new
weapon I was assigned."
"It sucks to be you," snickered Apis with a satisfied glare.
"Don't forget though," cautioned Consector, "Havoc warned us what will happen if
we don't all do our best. We need to come up with at least three wins this next
round."
"#$%#@$ HIM!!" screeched Apis. His hand clenched the pommel of his sword
tightly. "He stranded us and left us to die in the middle of nowhere!!"
"I think he called it 'an advanced form of training', or something like that,"
grumbled Protomorphus. "But you're right: #$%#@$ HIM!"
Consector caught Apis's eye and nodded emphatically.
"Anyway," continued Consector, "did anyone meet the new recruit before we left?
A short guy, I think."
"A short girl," replied Protomorphus, shading his eyes with his hand. "But not
too bright, I think."
"Why do you say that?" asked Consector suspiciously.
"She looked too damn happy to suit me!" declared Apis.
"Everybody's too happy to suit you," shot back Protomorphus.
Plumbeus bellowed out a booming laugh, but Consector muffled his.
"Yeah, she DID look like she didn't have a care in the world," Consector nodded
with a smile. "I gotta wonder if she knows what's she's in for."
A sudden, mournful growl gurgled from Plumbeus. He stopped laughing and placed
his hand on his stomach. The screechy, liquid growl repeated itself.
"Well, are we goin' to go back to Shadowspire?!" roared Plumbeus. "I'm getting'
awful hungry."
The other three gladiators looked at each other and exchanged sharp glances.
"Okay, Plumby," Protomorphus agreed with a wave of his arm, "but you lead this
time."
"Let's go then," replied Plumbeus, moving decisively across the oval clearing.
He paused a moment at its far edge, then strode forward resolutely, trampling the
golden grasses in a wide swath.
"HEY HEY HEY!!" yelled Apis. Plumbeus stopped and looked back quizzically.
"THAT way, you idiot!" Apis pointed; Plumbeus smiled sheepishly and began
tramping in the correct direction.
"'Python' my ass!" grumbled Apis as he followed the wide trail Plumbeus was
creating. "I know you hit me on purpose, you freak!"
Giggling and stumbling after them, Consector and Protomorphus made their
unsteady way in the rear.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Greetings Shadowspire! Well, it has been awhile since we have had a Warmaster
on the throne here in this fine arena. I am very proud to be the gladiator to break
that drought and even more excited to have received my graduation notice on the same
turn. I feel this is quite an accomplishment in this extremely competitive arena.
Gracchus was probably the most talented warrior to rise thru the Warmaster ranks, and
even he was unable to sit on the throne for a single turn before graduation.
Year of the Cat is an extremely fine warrior and fierce competitor who was
unlucky enough to get matched up with a warrior with my fighting style. I tip my hat
to him for his efforts.
Well, since I am on top, I have nobody ahead of me to challenge. That being
said, both of my challenges this turn were obviously down challenges. My first went
out to Serafin Gawain. This was due to an obvious style match up in my favor. Vanek
also seemed to push this challenge as it seems he and Bill the Bard of the Red Blades
seem to have some rivalry thing going on right now. I don't bother with arena
politics, I merely go out to try and win every fight. Beating a rival on the way out
the door would be a little sweeter though.
My second challenge almost went out against Duchess of Erat due to style match
up again. In the end though, Vanek decided to issue the second challenge against
Book Mark due to a decisive victory on my part against him recently in a bloodfued.
Vanek also mentioned that if I were to lose, seeing a member of the ever worthy
Capital Cartel succeed us wouldn't be the worst thing that could happen.
I'd like to take one last moment to also tip my hat to my teammate, Gregorr. He
was able to grab the Popularity Leader again this turn. If our turn had been
processed the previous turn like it was supposed to, that would have made an 8 turn
streak for Gregorr! Like so many warriors here in Shadowspire, he was very deserving
of holding the throne, but never got that opportunity and I am honored to have him
graduate with me.
Farewell Shadowspire, I shall miss thee. And as always, Life and luck to all
your warriors unless you're facing a Warmaster!
Lord Protector Titus
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of SHADOWSPIRE! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. The proverbial rising comet can only
hope to compare with CAPITAL CARTEL's team record! A 4-1-0 week and now a firm grasp
on a 4th place ranking. I have begun to suspect trickery on the part of JUNGLELAND.
How else weeks like this one's 3-2-0? How else the sudden move to 6th team? My
tutors were fond of telling me that the higher you rise the harder you fall. This
week THE RED BLADES went 2-3-0 and fell 11 notches into 17th! Did only my eyes note
the 4-1-0 record which WARMASTERS managed to post this round? I don't doubt that
such a record will draw challengers! BUGS caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as he skillfully bested INVISINOBLE and was awarded 19 points in
recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, VACA put down A.E. HOUSMAN,
causing him to lose 15 points of recognition in the process. Who here was not
present for the title fight this week as SERAFIN GAWAIN boldly challenged TITUS in
order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? Not for nothing has TITUS in the past
laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week he's proven his combat skill yet
again. Would you believe that over half of the old women in SHADOWSPIRE seem to feel
that they could fight better than you gladiators?
Many and various are the arts of battle. In SHADOWSPIRE "art" is a word that
has long since passed from the language! I saw one fighter that warriors avoided
when this week's challenge seeking began. OF WOLF AND MAN is feared. This much I
can say. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard pressed to find
any of RODENT CLAN last week. Busy avoiding OF WOLF AND MAN? Loose talk at the
arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are
after CYRIL WYRMSLAYER. Watch your back! At the gambling halls I have started to
bet money on ONYB ENGLVAR. He has got the courage it takes. Witness his challenge
this turn against HUMMINGBIRD! In the end ONYB ENGLVAR was beat by HUMMINGBIRD, a
"sharp" reminder that higher recognition is an indication of greater skill. Still,
it was a worthy bout! Give CTUCHIK credit for his courage. Did you note how he
challenged PHILIP K. DICK despite the 26 point difference in their rankings? To be
sure the battle was a losing one. But I like to think CTUCHIK at least gave PHILIP
K. DICK a run for his money. SHAVIOLA must really be harboring a grudge against the
ARCHAIC CHAOS guild! Merciless, 22 challenged down APIS FREMO points this week to
duel with she. Few would not have guessed the outcome of the bout as APIS FREMO was
subdued by SHAVIOLA. Is this what passes for courage in SHADOWSPIRE?
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! WILD BORD has sworn to take up religion upon
living to tell of its recent bout with the Dark Arena horrors. A rare thing indeed!
Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies
against the victorious. Remember this!
The girls are as pretty in SHADOWSPIRE as ever I remembered them....and the
fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Sadly warriors, now longer can I
keep thy company nor savor the ale of thy fine city. Depart I must and soon! Till
next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a different
story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

Superieee Beastie -- Didn't I teach you a lesson once already? If you continue to
pick on my friends I will reopen class. -- Zamzalin
Zamzalin -- I don't know. I found him quite the punching bag. Maybe you should let
him be. I did learn a lot from him and he didn't learn much from me. Not that
something that scared and slow can learn much... -- Serah
Liam O'superior -- Unless you want to enroll in Zamzalin's School of Getting Wooped,
I'd stop challenging me. Really, punching bags that can't fight back are for
practice. Maybe if you at least tried to swing? Maybe? Because any child can flail
around like you did in between my hits. -- Rena
Superior Bane -- As if dealing with the other punching bags wasn't enough... here is
another one... -- Rena
Rena -- At least this punching bag flailed a couple times and caught me off guard
ONCE!! -- Felix
Koutetsu Vsagi -- If this is how Fuzzy Bunnies fight, I'll watch my back more. Good
fight. -- Zamzalin
Hugh Capet -- What was it? You didn't like my color? You didn't like something warm
and fuzzy wrapped around your head? Killer! Killer, killer, killer! I will have
you barred at all head band clinics worldwide. So, there! Head bands come in
various sizes and I was: 17-14-5-17-9-11-11 +3 Init BA Good damage, normal

All -- please bear with us a moment of silence as we pray really hard for Head Band.
-- A Pious Agent (Who is silently really praying for a super recruit rollup.)
Atilla Keenblade -- Thank you for the challenge. You will need more practice,
however, before we allow you out of the batting cage. -- Low And Away, Capital Cartel
Azaghal -- Well, well, well. What have we here. You challenge the bookish Book Mark
for an easy win and hubba, hubba, hubba. Great story! -- Book Mark, Capital Cartel
A.E. Housman -- What a great challenge. Well done. Now you have me really limping!
-- Limp In, Capital Cartel
Shaviola -- Did your manager make you challenge me? Of course I lost. Please tell
him that I hope his driver head falls off and his putter gets bent. Hah! -- Pronate
Titus, Duelmaster of Shadowspire -- All us Cartelians salute you. -- Agent and The

Rodent Clan? 62 points? We knew something smelled in this city. -- Agent and The

Nice DM Column, great Spotlight. Another reason why Shadowspire is the place to be.

Virginia Woolf -- Are you kidding around? I've seen independent farmers fight with
more efficacy. Who's afraid? You should be. The illusions in this incarnation most
certainly are your own. Perhaps it is time to take that long walk to the river. At
the least just try to stay in your own room for a while. -- Justice Thomas
Mice and Dice -- You strikers and bashers are all the same. You walk up to me. You
hit me. You watch me fall. You go home with recognition points and a win.
Yadayada. Blahblahblah. -- Life Patent

Chuck the Hammer -- Well, I guess if you were a tee-ball fan you aren't now. LOL. --

Well, well, well... congrats to Titus, but Year of the Cat had a very typical last
turn, smashed by a Striker.... -- Le Pentarque
YofTCat, the Punching Ball, is thankful for the nice congrats though!
I received three challenges from Strikers this turn, so I guess I have to hit back a
little now. Time to do something! -- LP
Limp In -- Who could've predicted that little beef jerky skullcap I threw on as an
afterthought would save the fight for me? In recognition of and respect for your
more accomplished teammate I send my latest screed toward, perhaps, the best W/L

Low and Away -- I have been trying for the matchup for a long time and when I finally
get it, I blow it. I really would love another shot at it, but alas I am off to the

bad things happened. -- Azaghal
NoTaxestexas -- See, this here ain't texas, son. In Shadowspire we do what is right.
And if some young whippersnapper comes along and tries to get away without doin'

to really get it done. -- Justice Thomas

Xorn -- I asked for it and I got it. Hope it was as exciting for you as it was for
me. -- Outlaw Pete

again, they have all been against your style so the accomplishment is not as big as
it first sounds. Now, what am I gonna do with those learns? -- Rosalita

THE TURF WAR IS HERE AGAIN!!!!!
*************************************************************************************
*TURF WAR VII RULES*
Starting Nov 2010 (12 turns)
Bring acclaim and glory to the North Fork (DM47) arena.
Anyone may participate; known alliances, new alliances, or temporary alliances
created solely to compete in the Turf War! To participate, each alliance must:
1. Announce the Captain of the alliance in the North Fork (DM 47)
newsletter.
2. Indicate in the newsletter which Captain/alliance you will join.
3. Announcements made on the D2 Forums or elsewhere will not be accepted.
Captains are responsible for:
1. Verifying/authorizing, in the North Fork newsletter those who wish to
participate under the banner of their alliance. (Lack of participant indication of
joining and/or lack of lack of Captain confirmation will delay a team's participation
in the Turf War.)
2. Distribution of prizes should their alliance win the Turf War.
3. Submit two (2) RSI Roll-Up Certificates to participate. (Note: Captains
may, if they wish, submit certs for all potential members of their alliance.)
Participating managers who are not Captains must:
1. Submit two (2) RSI Roll-Up Certificates to participate (Unless already
submitted by Captain. Note: extras will not be returned, but will go into the winning
pool of prizes.)
2. Announce their intent to compete with manager name, team name, and
alliance they will represent in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter. Announcement made
on the D2 Forums will not be accepted.
a. No scores will be tabulated until an RSI Gift Certificate is
received, and participant indication and captain confirmation are posted in the North
Fork newsletter. NO EXCEPTIONS.
b. Before a manager can compete, he/she must declare themselves in
the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter as stated above AND be verified in the newsletter
by the alliance Captain they will represent.
c. Only one (1) team per player may compete. No multiple teams or
aliases will be allowed. Violations will result in immediate disqualification
(including team point adjustments) from the Turf War (so be sure to take any multiple
teams OFF of Team Maintenance and be certain not to run any other team warriors).
d. Scoring will NOT be retroactive for teams/alliances that do not
properly declare or get captain confirmation or fail to send a Gift Certificate by
Turn 1. In other words, if your Gift Certificate is not received until Turn 3 of the
Turf War, and you have fought on Turns 1 and 2, your score will not begin until Turn
3. All conditions must be met before scoring will begin--declaration, verification,
and Gift Certificate received.
e. No declarations or verifications will be accepted after Turn 5 of
the Turf War.
f. For purposes of scoring, the moderators will score the Turf War
and settle any and all disputes as they arise. Their decisions will be final. (Note:
the intent is to have a very thorough set of rules so that few decisions, if any, are
required from the moderators.)
Scoring will be as follows for Fights:
Win Loss Kill Die
Up Challenge +2 -2 +5 -5
Down Challenge 0 -2 0 -5
Match Up +1 -1 +1 -5
Bloodfeud Challenge (Up or Down) +2 -5 +5 -10
Champion ** x2 x2 x2 x2
Dark Arena* +10 -5 xx xx
Tournament Death*** -5
Halfway (6 round total) best alliance win/loss percentage ****
Final (12 round total) alliance w/l% percentage ****
*After 2nd win in DA, warrior scores no additional points for wins,
** A Champion's double score applies to his score only -- not to the opponent.
*** No warrior may be substituted without the proper use of the DA or arena death
or death in a tournament. There must be a maximum of five only on a team at any point
and time. (The penalty for such substitution is -10 points.) Points awarded for
tournament participation are 5 for any entrant, 15 for a TV and 25 for a TC. Death in
a tournament negates any tournament points gained and results in a-5 score.
***** Halfway points scored are 25, 20, 15, 10, 5, 5, 5 (etc) for 1st, 2nd, 3rd
(etc). (to qualify for any of these points the alliance must have fought 75% of its
possible fights.) Final 12 Round points scored are 40, 30, 20, 15, 10, 5, 5, 5 (etc)
for the 1st, 2nd, 3rd (etc). (to qualify for any of these points the alliance must
have fought 75% of its possible fights.)
Special Scoring Considerations for the Turf War are as follows:
Spy Report mention (team name only) +2
1. No matter how many mentions or stylemasters, an individual team can score
only +2 in each category per round
Style Master +2
1. No matter how many mentions or stylemasters, an individual team can score
only +2 in each category per round
Duelmaster +2
Champions:
1. A Champion may be declared, but one is not mandatory.
2. Only one Champion allowed per manager at any given time.
3. Champions that graduate or are killed by another warrior in the arena, but
not the Dark Arena, may be replaced.
4. Champions must have fought at least one previous fight in the North Fork
(DM47 arena) to be able to be declared a champion.
Bloodfeuds:
1. Bloodfeuds will score points on all four (4) turns.
2. There is no limit to which warrior may bloodfeud or how often.
Tournament Considerations:
1. Tournament participation is ALLOWED and encouraged.
2. Tournament Victors won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 25 15 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a warrior(s) wins
such status.
3. Tournament Champions won during the course of the contest will gain a one
(1) time bonus of 50 25 points. This bonus will apply EACH time a warrior(s) win
such status.
4. Points awarded for tournament participation are 5 for any entrant, (15
total for a TV and 25 total for a TC.) However, death in a tournament will result in
a -5 score for that tournament. (If a warrior TV's and is subsequently killed in a
tournament the points scored are -5 for that tournament.)
5. Points for TVs and TCs and tournament deaths will be applied the Turn
after RSI posts tournament results in the North Fork (DM 47) newsletter (i.e., if the
results post on North Fork turn 275, points will be credited on North Fork turn 276
to the applicable teams).
Special Considerations:
1. Each alliance begins the Turf War with zero (0) points.
2. There will be NO alliance or team changes once the contest has begun. If
you begin the Turf War with Alliance A, you must end the Turf War with Alliance A.
If you begin the Turf War with Team A, you must end the Turf War with Team A.
3. There will be a maximum of five (5) teams allowed per alliance for the
Turf War VII.
4. The Dark Arena may be used on the first turn only, of every warrior,
without penalty.
Prizes:
The Turf War is normally a "winner take all" contest. However, for TWVII, a prize
will be awarded each of the twelve turns to the individual team/manager that fights
five fights and has the best w/l record that turn. (Tiebreakers are in order - kills,
recognition points earned.) All prizes and 100% of the Gift Certificates will be
awarded to the Captain of the winning alliance at the end of the competition. It is
the responsibility of the Captain to distribute Gift Certificates. Moderators will
submit a list of each manager on the winning alliance to RSI at the completion of the
contest for the non-Certificate prizes.
All entry fees (rollup certs) are awarded to the winning alliance, except for
the twelve reserved for the individual winning manager each week.)
The following prizes have been secured from RSI:
1. Renaming of the North Fork (DM 47) arena;
2. Renaming of all Dark Arena Monsters (two for each manager in the winning
alliance);
3. Known Favorites for one warrior on each team of the winning alliance
(warrior must be ranked Initiate or above, must be alive, and must have at least one
DM47 arena fight to receive this award).
4. +1 Skill bonus potion for each manager on the winning alliance. Bonus
potion must be applied to a living warrior from (DM 47)
5. +1 Skill bonus potion (one) for each and every individual manager who
fights in all 12 rounds AND 54 fights of the Turf War. Bonus potion must be applied
to a living warrior from (DM 47)
These RSI awards will be listed by the Moderator for claiming from RSI (Lee)
within 4 turns of the end of TW VI. The certs will be mailed to the winning alliance
by the Moderators within two weeks of the end of the TW.
Moderators:
The Moderators for this event will be Oz and Master Darque. They will arbitrate all
dealings during the course of the contest. Their decisions will be final. All
questions, comments, and scoring disputes may be directed to Land of Oz or Darque
Forces via diplo in DM 47. Managers with internet access may send a private message
to [The Consortium] or [Darque] on the Duel2 Forums. Lastly, you may also email
questions, comments, and scoring disputes to rebelnerfherder at yahoo dot com or
wfms101 at aol dot com.
Please note there have been rule changes from the last Turf War. Please read them
carefully!
