The trade route from Shadowspire was generally well- maintained, and it was the only thoroughfare heading West. It was therefore unusual that there would be such a wide, sweeping pathway taking off at a right angle from the road, heading deep into the tangled forest. It was well-used, but without any sign post or stone marker in evidence. There was no township or village in that direction, as far as he knew. It was on none of his maps. Havoc frowned. He noted the deepening shadows and cursed soundlessly. Without looking back, Havoc reached behind and retrieved a wide-skirted helmet. He pulled it down onto his grizzled head and loosened his falchion in its sheath. Taking a deep breath, he gently urged the horse into the side track. This unfinished road was irregular and bumpy, but not overly so; the brush had been hacked away from its rough edges. Havoc noted that the ground was well marked with footprints, hoof prints, and wagon tracks and was obviously used often, if not daily. He put the horse into a steady trot and warily watched the deepening shadows slide by. Within a couple of kilometers Havoc caught the scent of roasting meat and wood smoke. He slowed the horse to a walk. Soon he saw the smoke against the dusky horizon, just before he rode over a small hill. Havoc was aware of two knots of armored men, one on each flank, at the same time as he finally caught sight of the tavern. It was half hidden in the shadow of a soaring bluff at its back that just barely overshot the ancient trees. The windows were shuttered closed; only slits of light were to be seen. It was a two-storied, rambling affair; sections seemed to have been added steadily as it had prospered. Smoke from a half-dozen chimneys billowed into the deepening night. Havoc sniffed appreciatively. The scent of seared meat and charcoal wafted heavily in the air. His stomach growled. The roadway circled around a tall statue and fountain that were facing the front of the tavern. Two rough tracks separated from the main one here; one went to the left and led to a forbidding two story block of a building. The other led to the right and, by the smell of it, a place to house livestock. As he guided his horse around the statue and approached the front of the main building, Havoc caught sight of a familiar figure lounging on the wide rim by the fountain's pool. He dismounted as a pair of armed men detached themselves from a group of warriors and approached. Like the others he had seen, they wore leather armor, lacquered in deep blue with gold lines along its various edges, and they carried a shortsword and a sturdy spear apiece. They also carried, Havoc noticed, a haughty attitude. "Hey buddy, you been here before?" asked the taller one. Havoc glanced at the slim figure lolling by the fountain, and then shook his head. "Well goody. I like to break in the new customers right so we don't get no problems down the road. Right, Gant?" "Yeah," drawled Gant. He had taken a position behind Havoc and to his left. His spear was leveled at his gut and he had given himself enough room to maneuver as necessary. Havoc noted his position from the corner of his eye. It felt strangely reassuring to deal with professionals. "We just need to make a few things clear, okay?" Havoc shrugged, and the tall one frowned. "Don't ya speak Basic, buddy?" "I hear you," replied Havoc. "Well goody. I'll break it down simple. You go to the door and you leave your weapons with the doorkeepers. You pay as you go, but you pay in advance. You leave when you like, or you leave when we tell ya. That depends on you. Got it?" Havoc nodded; a small smile touched his lips. "I say somethin' funny, buddy?" The taller one leveled his spear at Havoc. "Hey, Binder, maybe we should just get rid of him," suggested Gant. "Binder -- that's your name?" "What about it?" "What about my horse?" Havoc swept his arm slowly in its direction. "I've got some gear I need to keep track of; know what I mean?" "Yeah, yeah," nodded Binder. "There's the corrals to yer right. They got storage for ya. Gonna cost ya, though." Binder ran his eyes up and down Havoc's wide frame appraisingly. The dark, closely-woven rings of his byrnie bespoke a veteran fighter, but other than the quality of his armor, there was no indication of wealth. "Oh, I'll take care of that," smiled the Arcane Kid as he approached. The two guards were instantly tensed and quiet. Apparently they knew the Kid, and they knew him well. Havoc smiled to himself again. Arcane tossed a small sack that jingled nicely in the air. Binder snatched it neatly and made it disappear. "I'd appreciate it if you'd take the horse to the stables for my friend. He's obviously tired and hungry. I'll escort him inside and make sure he follows the rules," Arcane said. He hooked his arm in Havoc's and started to pull him toward the tavern door. "Uh, we're not supposed to..." began Gant. "Not a problem, sir," interrupted Binder. He glared at his companion and held his lance at attention as the Arcane Kid led Havoc past them. "We'll probably be in the gold room," waved the Kid. Binder nodded as Gant grabbed the reins and began to briskly lead the horse away. "You can't buy your way everywhere, Kid," muttered Havoc. "Hah! You can't kill everyone you meet that bothers you," retorted Arcane. "In any case, I'm glad you made it. I was worried about you." "Huh!" snorted Havoc. He caught the twinkle off an arrowhead from a second- story window as they approached the front door. Two guards, gold lines glinting off their armor, watched them impassively as they entered. They came into a medium-sized room mostly taken up by rows of shelves. A wide doorway was to their left, flanked by another pair of armed guards. Havoc started slightly. These guards were obviously orcs; their huge, thick-set bodies and beetle- browed faces were distinctive. Each held a battle axe instead of a spear. Havoc scowled at the Kid, who ignored him. A scarred wooden counter separated the roomful of shelves from the narrow empty space in front. The Kid led Havoc to the counter where a dark-haired buxom young woman in a scant purple toga waited. She smiled insincerely as they approached. "Welcome gentlemen! Are we here for the night, or just dinner?" "Oh, he's going to stay in my room tonight," replied Arcane with a handsome smile. "I'm in the Rosewood -- suite #3, remember? But my friend will need his dinner tonight, and breakfast tomorrow." "I see." The girl bobbed her pretty head as her hands fluttered out of sight under the counter. She looked up warily at Havoc. "Weapons, please." Havoc grimaced and reached for his sword; the two orcs took a short step forward; Arcane placed a slim, manicured hand on the pommel of Havoc's sword. "Take off your sword belt," smiled the Kid in an undertone. "Never show steel in this place unless you're ready to fight to the death." "My kind of place," rumbled Havoc in a hoarse whisper as he slowly complied. The orcs waited until Havoc had laid his sheathed sword on the counter, the belt wrapped loosely around it, before stepping back to their places against the wall. The girl gave a tremulous smile and quickly brought her hands up from under the counter. She held a pair of ribbons, red and gold; she quickly wrapped them around the swordbelt and sheath and tied them off in a flourishing knot. Then her hands disappeared under the counter again. She brought up a leather marker with a painting of the same knot Havoc had witnessed. She handed it to Havoc; her hand was steady. The girl picked up the bundled swordbelt and disappeared down one of the aisles of shelving. Havoc tucked the leather marker into his belt as Arcane led him past the orc guards and into the next room. The sounds and smells pushed against them as they entered. This room was loud and long and lined with booths on either side. Men and women in purple togas scurried up and down the room. Armored men of various nationalities crowded together on the benches. Some busied themselves with their tankards or mugs; others gorged on their food. All were busy attempting to talk at the same time. A few Harkneys carrying naked broadswords stood vigilantly at either end of the room. The walls were covered with brightly-colored paintings; it seemed to be an elaborate mural depicting a story. It appeared to revolve around a beautiful, curly- headed woman. He was unable to decipher it before the Kid had led him through that room and into the next one. This room was wider. It had booths along the walls and large round tables scattered throughout the center. Its walls were likewise brightly painted in colorful murals, but here the story was plainer. There were many larger-than-life portraits of gladiators engaged in combat. Havoc nodded approvingly as he caught sight of one painting in particular. A spear-carrying opponent, without armor, had just impaled a chainmail-wearing, scimitar-whirling fighter. The bloody point of the spear glared from the back of the second fighter. The look of despair on the face of the scimitar-bearer was matched by the fierce triumph on the face of the lunging spear-wielder. Arcane grabbed his arm again and caught his attention. He nodded toward a wide flight of stairs against the far wall. Havoc followed the Kid up the stairs and down a short hall. A closed door decorated in green and gold patterns was flanked by another pair of guards carrying shortswords. They nodded at the Kid and opened the door for him. Arcane dropped a coin in a ready palm as he passed. This room was far quieter, once the door was shut behind them. The walls were painted a soft blue, and trimmed in gold. There were many small tables scattered discreetly apart. Only a half-dozen were in use. The tables were covered in white linen and had silver utensils laid out neatly. Thickly-padded chairs waited invitingly. A slender blonde wearing another inadequate purple toga, her hair pinned up in a pile behind her head, led them to a table without neighbors. Havoc watched another coin disappear from the Kid's hand. "Just my usual," gestured Arcane once they had been seated. "My friend here will have the Gladiator's Special." Havoc stared at the Kid impassively. "Yes sir," nodded the girl. "What will you have to drink?" she asked Havoc. "Dark ale," muttered Havoc. "Any particular brand?" Havoc furrowed his wide brow. "You've got brands?" "Yes sir," smiled the blonde. "We carry most of the major brands from most of the Delarquean cities." "How about Jhelum's Justice?" "Yes sir; one J.J. coming up!" The blonde pivoted smoothly and slipped away. "That Justice brew?" frowned the Kid. "Isn't that so caustic it eventually eats through the barrel?" "That's why you have to drink it while it's fresh," sneered Havoc. "Even so..." "Yer not my momma, Kid," snarled Havoc. "No need to get testy," said the Kid in an easygoing way. "Think of this as a paid vacation." "Look, I've been riding for hours into the middle of nowhere. I got things to do; you know I hate these little meetings. If you wanna see me, you know where I am." "True, but I thought you'd appreciate this place," Arcane replied calmly. "Its ambience fits your distorted personality perfectly." "Yeah, yeah. Whatever. Where the hell are we?" "Pandora's Box. It's a very old enterprise -- started by a handful of unsuccessful gladiators, I believe." "Yeah? If they were unsuccessful, how'd they get the money to start a place like this?" "It does leave room for speculation," acknowledged Arcane. The blonde soon returned with a pair of tankards in her hands. A tray-laden boy was in tow. She placed the tankards on the table, then took the plates from the tray and laid them in front of the men. A lightly-seared bison steak, dark red in the center, sizzled in front of Havoc; its juices pooled under it. A large potato, loaded with butter and chives, sat on its own plate. A token bowl of salad sat behind a sizeable brown loaf of hot bread. On the other side of the table, a bowl of mixed fruits, carven into various flowers, was placed in front of the Kid. "Is there anything else I can help you with?" asked the blonde as the boy scampered away with his tray. Havoc grunted and reached for his fork and knife. The Kid smiled and shook his head. The blonde bowed slightly and left them alone. "Okay Kid, let's get to it." "First, let's discuss the Shadowspire roster." "No," mumbled Havoc as he chewed on his steak. He paused to gulp from his tankard. "I've already put in the paperwork. Three of them are heading to the D.A. I'm sending two or three every turn until we get some decent talent." "Expensive proposition," replied the Kid stiffly. "Our rankings will suffer accordingly." "We can't get much lower than where we're at now," growled Havoc as he attacked his potato. "True. Pathetic, but true." "Cheer up. Sooner or later it's bound to get better?" "That's your expert advice?" Arcane toyed with a blossom carved from a peach. "I might just as well have asked any of the local fortune tellers." "Cut it out." "I thought you'd be taking these matters more seriously," pouted Arcane. "You took the time to meet me just for this?" "Well, I also wish to discuss Vector's career..." "Huh! Let that one go, Kid. That fighter is tough; there's plenty of other fish in the sea Vector should be going after." "It galls me to fail," muttered Arcane. "I'm not used to it." "Get used to it," chuckled Havoc. "Everyone loses sometime; that's just the way it is!" "Are you certain of that?" "Kid, nothing's certain but death." "So I've heard," sulked Arcane. "But I don't have to enjoy it." "No you don't," Havoc mumbled through another mouthful of steak. He gestured to the blonde, waiting against the wall. "You want my salad?" he asked as he handed the empty tankard to the girl. SPY REPORT Hail and well met warriors of SHADOWSPIRE! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team SUPERIOR FORCES NT was unseated this week as WARMASTERS moved up from 2nd ranking to take the top spot with a 3-2-0 record for the round. There were bitter words at PHILANTHROPISTS' guildhouse after a 0-5-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 20th. Dark Arena anyone? Did only my eyes note the 3-1-1 record which DRAGONBANE GUILD managed to post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! AVERAGE JOE caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully bested ETTIN and was awarded 26 points in recognition. In one of the week's more notable duels, MIDNIGHT SUN put down CHUPUCASUPERIOR, causing him to lose 19 points of recognition in the process. Who here was not present for the title fight this week as W.S. GILBERT boldly challenged HUMMINGBIRD in order to strive for the Duelmasters honors? Not for nothing has HUMMINGBIRD in the past laid claim to the Duelmaster's throne, and this week she's proven hers combat skill yet again. Heed this! A seer has warned that if exactly 6 die in duels this week, the whole city shall perish! Just remember...5 or 7! But come now, let us look deeper into the maze of contention and crossed blades that is city SHADOWSPIRE. I saw one fighter that warriors avoided when this week's challenge seeking began. SUPERIOR FORCES NT is feared. This much I can say. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding SUPERIOR FORCES NT. Indeed it was CAPITAL CARTEL. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms the knowledge that many fighters are after KISS MY GRITS. Watch your back! At the gambling halls I have started to bet money on MARTIN LUTHER. He has got the courage it takes. Witness his challenge this turn against PHILIP K. DICK! I must admit to some joy. Before my very eyes the underdog in this contest, MARTIN LUTHER, defeated PHILIP K. DICK to claim victory and recognition. A match that raised a few eyebrows at the games this week, it seems that APIS FREMO posted a challenge against the more highly recognized PRONATE. The results, you ask? Well, the firebrand APIS FREMO was beat by PRONATE. Remember warriors, this is the discipline of steel. Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand ready at your right hand forever! The warrior's path is harsh. For mediocrity there is but one reward--death. This past week ETTIN, at 18-14-0, departed SHADOWSPIRE forever. Walk proud, warriors of DARQUE AGES! By striking down SERAFIN GAWAIN you have avenged the honor of your dead. Your virtue is known to all in SHADOWSPIRE. Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this! The girls are as pretty in SHADOWSPIRE as ever I remembered them....and the fighters as ugly! Don't let your reputation slip! Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember: a fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing only once. That left a bad taste. -- DDT Cotton Frail -- Dark Arena cha-cha-cha! Parole revoked! -- Justice Thomas Chuck the Hammer -- And that is why you couldn't get them out of Spain. -- Life Patent Jesicka -- I like you. Wanna dance? -- Life Patent Bugs -- That is one of those times when I got to say you were just better than me. That said, you got lucky. -- Invisinoble Hypogee Bleve -- Uh, the idea was not to hit the head pin, and I must admit that you did that quite well. Bwahaha. Thanks for getting me off to a rip roarin' winnin' start. Thanks lots! -- Gutter Ball, Capital Cartel Consector -- Nice loss, Bud; and I wasn't even running full steam. -- Pronate, Capital Cartel Fan Zhen -- Har, har. Played you like a fiddle on fourth street. I just love this game! -- Limp In, Capital Cartel Hugh -- Was that any way to treat me on a blood feud? Why didn't you tell me you had already read the book? You lulled me in like a second-hand magazine. You Curr! -- Bookmark, Capital Cartel P.S. Agent told me to tell you to tell your manager that he was going to make sure that Oz knew all about this mistreatment. Duchess -- My dear, thank you for that challenge. I love meeting up with semi- athletes, especially female, who couldn't possibly hit a fastball. Thanks for being my last. -- Low And Away, Capital Cartel Hummingbird -- Congratulations. You look like a top dog even though you are a mighty industrious little bird. Kudos, Duelmaster. -- Agent, Capital Cartel P.S. Want to really make some money? I can get you a contract that is outta this world. Let's do lunch. I guess I had to be satisfied with a 4-1 last turn, even though Master Darque misdirected my Cartel out of perfection. Is night fighting really as dangerous as some people say it is? -- Floppy Longears Pizzarrhea -- See what happens when you try to think of witty things to say instead of keeping your guard up? -- Pink Bunny Jehgan -- Apparently, my manager agreed with you. -- Ghost of Mr Bunn Vaca -- A man striving toward Shadowspire, Espied a filthy wretch by a fire, Said Vaca, "Oh no, I'm not a hobo, I just prefer bathing in mire." --A.E. Yes, "von Drachen" does mean "from Dragon." However, when considering how lords and such named themselves it is frequently translated as "of Dragon." It implies a location, but could be interpretted otherwise. In addition, locations frequently received their names because of some major event that happened there. So, perhaps there is a reason why a Hunter is known as coming from a location called Dragon? Whichever option you choose, I am a Hunter of Dragons. -- Jager von Drachen The Superior Cat -- Rumor has it your managerr is good with that style. Perhaps I shall try that test again at some point. -- Azaghal Bobby Jean -- A win! Haven't hit my head on one of those in awhile. -- Blue Marble Serah -- I never was a fan of sludge. Sort of slimy. It gets in the way of a good hunt. -- Jager von Drachen And the quest to get Liberius to graduate has succeeded! Congratulations to the Warmasters! Brick Mouse -- You asked for it and you got it. Hope it was as exciting for you as it was for me. -- Outlaw Pete Sinister Snoopy -- I knew that was gonna happen. Someday, I will eat your style for breakfast. But I guess you will be retired in Home Guard by then. -- Rosalita Zog Cornerstone -- Now, that's what I call magic! -- Magic Rat Blue Marble -- Yawn... -- Bobby Jean Weezy -- Can't complain about those learns. -- Madam Marie I arrive now in Shadowspire from faraway lands. I greet you all and welcome the battles to come. Stay deadly, my friends. -- obregon All -- On fight day of turn 91 the team Monster Manual were absent. Everything is a little fuzzy, but we remember partying at the Inn of the Welcome Wench the night before. We played Das Boot with the team "Beer" and were getting ready for the Dwarf Toss when The Monsantis sent over a round of shots to our table. We don't know what happened next, but when we woke up the Dark Arena fights were going on. I wanted to launch an investigation, but Pit Fiend just grabbed his spear and hissed, "To Hell with that, let's go show them what their innards look like." Hard to argue with a Demon. So that's it, Monsantis, here we come. -- Deep Thought Unholy Knights -- We have not forgotten about you.
