TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The Return of Tripwire
Notes: This following takes place about 8 years ago. Tripwire had suddenly
disappeared from Alastari for many years leaving his stables of gladiators and
fortunes in shambles, shut down across the lands. This is the story of his return to
the sands and what had happened to the psionic.
The long, hardened fingernail scraped slowly across the expensive oak tabletop
leaving small shavings and furrows of wood in its wake. Jekyll winced each time the
claw dug into his tabletop and ruined the finish. The dark assassin looked up from
under the thick black hair that hung long over his face and eyes and muttered, "You
know, that table costs me more than an entire stable of gladiators?"
A low growl came from the huge beast of a man seated in the large chair across
from him. The hand stopped its digging and pointed at Jekyll accusingly. "We almost
had them! After all these years we almost had them. It's your fault they got away.
This is the longest we have ever had to search for an artifact! And it was OURS!
STOLEN FROM US! NO ONE STEALS FROM US!!" Thrusting himself from the table the
hugely muscled Ultraist nearly upended the entire 500 pound dining table just pushing
back from the chair and standing, once again pacing the the huge dining area of
Jekyll's hideout.
"Peace brother. It wasn't my fault! I told you that a hundred times. It
wasn't magic and it wasn't taken by force. There are spells and traps still not
triggered around the door." Standing himself he pushed his always flowing and
shifting hooded cape to the side as he stood. "I finally figured out it was done by
a psionic of some sort. I hadn't been prepared for that. Mental abilities, not
magic got the artifact, but why is what I am trying to figure out. Why would a
psionic steal a psionic soul prison?" Jekyll flowed across the room seeming to not
even walk but flick from shadow to shadow as he moved.
The psionic soul prison was intended to be an impregnable trap for a mentalist.
It actually was a combination of magic and psionic energy that trapped a persons soul
into the hells until the person could come up with a random 10 digit number within 30
seconds. The artifact itself reset the number and changed it every half minute to
make it impossible for the trapped person's soul to return to its rightful body.
After years of chasing leads, bribing, and not a little bit of outright killing
they had tracked the artifact to an area north of the city of Snowbound in the harsh
cold mountains. There had to be a hidden hideaway there somewhere and they were
right on the verge of finding it. Unfortunately during a rigorous round of
"questioning" Jekyll had used a bit too much, ahem, vigor and the subject had died
right before he gave the exact location. Waving a hand in the air he turned to the
collossul were-lion. "We know the general location. We are almost there. We will
finally have our property returned and take pleasure in making the offenders pay."
The golden maned giant turned towards the assassin, moving with startling
quickness for a man of his huge stature. Muscles rippled as he turned his 6'10"
frame and pointed, "Get your things together. We leave in an hour."
++++++++++++++++++++++++++
The young guard stared at the thin man chained to the chair. The room was tiny
and sparce with two doors, one leading further into the underground dungeon and one
leading back outside into the entrance room, where their master worked. "He isn't
alive. He can't be look! His chest isn't moving." The old guard shook his head and
sighed once again having to deal with newcomers. His master wasn't an easy man to
please, and this was the third new guard in a month. The others having paid the
ultimate price for failing. "Look jus sit in yer chair and watch him. Is it that
hard? Keep on yappin and yer likely to find yerself in a grave." Turning, he looked
breifly at their scrawny charge. A thin tall man in ragged clothing that fell nearly
off his body, he hadn't moved in years. He knew that the man was alive, his master
said so, but somehow his master wasn't pleased, something had gone wrong.
Many years ago his master had brought him to this place and explained that the
man in the chair was the key to opening huge amounts of power. But for some reason
he couldn't gain the power he wanted. It was inaccessible. He had brought the man
in with some sort of glowing manacle clamped onto his throat, the thing pulsed with
power and gave off an feeling of dread every time he looked at it.
The younger guard stood and the older tried to reach for him to tell him to sit.
"I am going to take a closer look." Standing quickly the brash and burly young guard
moved towards the scrawny figure. "He can't be alive! Look at him! Why are we
guarding someone so pathetic?"
A cold chill permeated the air and the older guard started, his eyes widening as
he sat in his chair a bit straighter and looked straight ahead. A hissing sibilant
voice answered. "Not dangerous you say? Why? Because he is weak you think?
Because he is... powerless?" The hooded and robed figure had materialized in the
room without a sound and the young guard, bolted back towards his chair and cast his
eyes downward. "I am sorry master, I didn't mean anythi..."
A clawed hand pointed towards the young guard. "Draw your sword."
The youth shook his head, "Master, I am sorry... I..."
"DRAW IT!!" The voice pounded into the two guards heads and nearly toppled them
both over. Shakily the youth did as he was told his hand barely able to hold onto
the leather hilt of his broadsword. The master, whose black boots hovered inches off
the ground floated slowly towards the pair. "Now use it, stab the prisoner in the
heart, slash his throat. Kill him."
The guard looked at the pathetic man in the chair and moved slowly forward.
"Master I didn't mean to..."
"DO IT OR DIE!" the hissing voice permeated the heads of the pair and made them
wince.
Persperation began to trickle from the guard's head as he moved slowly towards
the captive. Looking back once at the older guard, who was shaking in his chair he
swallowed and turned back a pleading look on his face. Hefting the broadsword the
burly man used the razor sharp edge to slash forward with a quick strike, intending
to kill him quickly with a blow across the throat. With a mighty heave he grunted
with the effort of bringing it whistling down across the man's throat. The
broadsword shattered. Shards of steel flying into the hands and arms of the youth as
he screamed in pain. The blow had been true, had struck the flesh, but it had
bounded back and shattered, leaving not even a dent or scratch on the man sitting in
the chair.
"Foolish boy. Impetuous boy. Let me tell you a story about this man sitting in
this chair. This hated being whom I despise more than any other. This creature who
has vexed me for years now. Sit and I will tell you the story of Tripwire..."
Too be continued...
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Well, we all had our hopes up that perhaps Jugger would come down from Murska in
celebration of his first graduate and Duelmaster, but no such luck. I guess his 17-
35-0 DM and graduate out of that arena was greater cause for celebration. Oh well.
He did manage to get a letter off, however, which is something I guess. He let me
know that I won't be fighting on the Isle on account of my style and my odd favorite
weapon and fighting rhythms (DA LO/MO, whatever that means), but that he'd like to
keep me on the payroll as a team manager of sorts. Since all he's ever done since we
first signed up with him about a year ago now is to post some more or less suspicious
challenges every now and then, I'm hoping to be able to at least as good a job as
he's ever done of it.
While I was the first graduate and DM off of the original Summerborn-five, I am
by no means the most talented, so first on the order of agenda will be to try to
graduate some of my more talented peers. I'm hoping to have August on the Isle
within the next couple of turns, and Midnight Sun has been severely underperforming
which I'm hoping to remedy through some slight change of tactics and better
challenging. A little further down, Vaca is quietly amassing a decent record as well
which I hope to maintain as he approaches the champion ranks.
For my own last turn, I'm just randomly challenging two warriors I haven't
fought before, while avoiding the very impressive looking Regina Spectre. I thought
about throwing Arioch one last challenge in the hopes of redeeming myself somewhat
for that last embarrassing loss where he didn't throw a single punch, but thought
better of it. I've lost the title to him once already and think it would haunt me
for the rest of my (immortal) life if I lost to him once more. Best not risk it.
It's been great battling it out with you all. Best of luck in the future.
Your Duelmaster,
Hummingbird
SPY REPORT
Well, what are you looking at, SHADOWSPIRE? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, WARMASTERS, since CAPITAL
CARTEL took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. If this keeps up,
RODENT CLAN, you'll have to shine swords instead of use them. A drop of 9 in the
rankings? SUMMERBORN turned their 2-3-0 turn into a 2nd place rank in the listings
this turn. Any better than this, and you get put on hit lists. Now let's all watch
LA PENTARCHIE's heads swell from their 5-0-1 this turn. Haa ha ha ha! Big shots,
big talk, big deal. Of course, we're all terribly impressed to see FAN ZHEN win a
fight and gain 23 points, terribly. Tsk, tsk, FAN ZHEN beat SELENA SPECTRE and
SELENA SPECTRE lost 19 points. You're breakin' my heart. VIRIDIO challenged
SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And it's out with the old, in
with the new, as VIRIDIO takes the Title and last week's bar tab from the old
Duelmaster. Heh, heh. The Swinging Aardvark, humph! I've tasted better ale at
mortuaries. Where do they get this stuff? From SHADOWSPIRE's trash dumps?
Well, let's take a look at some more misdeeds of you miserable sword-boys.
SUPERIOR FORCES NT, I suppose you'll be glad to know you were this turn's most
avoided team. Care to know who is the most afraid of you? And who led the way in
this mass act of cowardice? Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was JUNGLELAND. Ha
ha ha ha! AVERAGE JOE was challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now
was the DM insulted or feared? Heh, heh. I guess I can give a little credit to PINK
BUNNY of FUZZY BUNNIES for challenging up by 22 to CICERO. PINK BUNNY won to get 51
points of recognition.
Some people like volunteer work in the hospitals. I volunteer for SHADOWSPIRE's
morgue. More variety. THE RED BLADES has cause to pause today, as KID CHARLEMAGNE
was sent to the Dark Arena, and came back--though not in the best of moods, I'll
wager. And what a stunning loss we have here, boys and girls, ROSALITA of JUNGLELAND
has added the final loss to hers 9-12-0. Tee hee! And now a passing thought on a
warrior dying young (CHOP SUEY of OTTO'S DINER): You had your chance and now you're
dead. Oh well... We're all going to die in the end, so why worry if the fate
catches up with you sooner that later?
There's got to be a better place in SHADOWSPIRE to get a drink than The Swinging
Aardvark! Any suggestions? Just wait 'till next time I show up here, I won't be so
nice! So nyaaah! Paste this one in your scrapbooks, you'll need the kindling come
this winter-- Snide Clemens

Look at those point gains! 62, 54, 52, and Capital Cartel and Darque Ages at 47 and
46. Wow! Well done, Jungleland! -- Agent, Capital Cartel (clearly quite impresses)
All -- Welcome Bloodmage, may she make your days miserable and mine wonderous! --
Tripwire
Liberius -- Not a good way to go out, but luck to you on the Isle (or retirement). I
have a new strategy. Block with my face and hope for the best! It has worked the
past few turns. -- Arioch
Ima Cheerleader -- I am off to the DA! -- Weezy
Consector -- Whohoo! I wasn't expecting that rating for a while. Noice! -- Shaviola
Brown Betty -- Not this time, sweetcheeks! -- Zevran
Pronate -- Ouch! I really thought you would teach me more than that! -- Apis Fremo
Shaviola -- I didn't realize that you're so aggressive. I was looking around in the
stands, waving to my girlfriend... well, now my ex... dude, calm down. -- Consector
Would my guys begin to get out of their summer slumber? Let's hope so. It could
also be the poking from Gentleben: who knows? -- LP, fingers crossed.
By the way, my rookie will miss at least the next turn... holiday issues!
DeepThought -- All my condolences for Ettin, nice efficient warrior. I guess Average
Joe got confused by the two heads and tried to simplify... -- LP
Classic Napalm
If our souls only found the right balm,
We could sing with the joy of a Psalm,
But in order to find inner calm,
We must live all our life free of qualm.
Some challenges are self-giving alms,
And the cowards' life a ticking timebomb,
But the closest to squealing out 'mom',
Is a failed headhunter named Napalm.
-- A.E. Housman
Hummingbird -- It's the duelmastership, fer cryin-out-loud. Worth a shot for a
perhaps-last-chance old man, no? Well, in retrospect, perhaps, no. Congratulations
on the rare, dominant, Shadowspire career. -- W.S. Gilbert
Martin Luther -- I find that dastardly challenge to be as brave as... my bi-weekly
avoids. -- Philip K. Dick
The Superior Cat -- Some kind of a record. Seems a bit ironic that I learned attack
from that. -- Outlaw Pete
Liam O'Superior -- Hmm. Was I looking into a mirror? -- Madam Marie
Walli -- Hate to pick on you but the style match-up is just too tempting. -- Magic
Rat
Hummingbird -- Congrats on the invite and the awesome performance you showed in this
arena. -- Bartender and Jungleland
Hummingbird -- Congrats on the throne and the graduation. -- Vanek, Manager of
Warmasters
Far Travelers -- Welcome to Shadowspire! I hope you enjoy your stay here as much as
I have! Also, I know an 0-5 record isn't what you'd hoped for to start, but don't
get discouraged. Keep your chin up and keep plugging away! -- Vanek
Shadowspire -- Drinks are on me this week at Otto's Diner to celebrate Liberius
finally graduating! We thought it would never happen. -- Vanek
Arioch -- I matched up against you recently and won. Then I discover my favorites
upon graduation and use them against you in a rematch. I should do even better this
time, right? I mean, now I know my favorite weapon and rythem. No surprise... of
course then I lost! Nice fight sir! -- Liberius
Chupucasuperior -- A 6'8 Dwarf!?! Look more like a wookie to me. Something stinks
here and it isn't just my dueling. -- Fimnar
The Commission's idea of a joke. It's gotten old in the past fifteen years.
Maddened Meerkat -- You thought breaking my weapon was going to change things? HA! --
Elthor
Elidad -- What the... -- Heinrik
Zevran -- What Heinrik said. -- Naryak
Blue Marble -- Of course I have to match up with the likes of you! The gods must
really hate me. -- Fimnar
Superiorbane -- You think using that weapon will actually fool someone. Pleeeeeaase,
we all know what you really are. -- Elthor
Goulash -- I beat you to the ground and you get up and get in one lucky shot!?! The
is no justice in the world. -- Heinrik
Did you really expect some?
Limp In -- Damned smithy cost me that one! -- Naryak
