DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
So there me was one evenin, mindin me own business at the o'l Warty Toad and
enjoyin O' frosty brew when a strange shadow fell across me table. Me looked up ta
see who be blockin me view. Me table be surrounded by a motley crew if me ever seen
one. One lovely ratani lassie, one ugly orc, an even uglier golemn and an elven
fellow. The way the lot O' them looked down their noses on me, me knew right O' way
me didn't like them.
Me canted me ta get a better look at the lass when she spoke ta me.
"Are you Owsly?" She asked me.
Me leaned back in me chair. "Aye in flesh and bone." Me tried ta give her me
best smile though me must say it be forced.
"Good. We've a proposition for you." She dinnae return O smile.
"Me be listenin but make it quick, me brew be getting warm." She seemed ta
frown more and the orc growled under his breath in irritation.
"We would like to hire you as our manager." She stated matter O factly all the
while glaring down her nose at me.
Me couldnae help meself an did what any respectable manager would have done. Me
laughed. Laughed so hard in fact me almost fell over backward in me chair. Ta make
matters worse me spilled half me beer on the floor. Through gasping breaths O' air
me finally managed ta choke out a reply.
"What make ye think me be willin ta manage the lot O' you?" Me asked still
tryin ta catch me breath.
"Because we will pay you a healthy sum to do so. Your tab for the night has
already been covered so feel free to order another round for yourself since you
wasted that one and it is, as you say, getting warm." At that moment she plops a fat
sack O' gold on the table.
Me be sure she be expecting me ta seal the deal with her and by the look O her
companions they expected the same. Instead it raised another question in me mind.
"Why ye pick me? There be plenty O' other managers more capable than me. Me
only have one team and only their experience ta go by and they dannae even have a
winnin record."
"Because the other managers turned us down or were full. You were our last
option." Needless ta say that dinnae go over ta well with me.
The elf that be keepin quiet up til this point spoke. "Come on HR lets get out
of here. Obviously this so called 'manager' doesn't have the intelligence to know an
opportunity when it's standing in front of him."
That dinnae go ever any better. In fact it got me blood boilin. "Lad me have
half O mind ta put me fist in ye nose so hard the golemn there be bleedin for talking
ta me that way!" Me reached across the table ta get a hold O him, but the orc
stepped between us with a grunt. Sooooo, me popped him one right in the kisser. He
went like a sack O' taters, knockin over a few chairs in the process.
"Mr. Owsly!!!!" The sharp crack O the ratani voice brought me attention back ta
her and brought any thoughts O retaliation ta a halt from her companions. "Do you or
do you not want the job?!?" If she dinnae glare at me afore, she be glaring at me
for sure now with an arrogance that suggested she owned me. Me was not aboot ta give
up so easily though.
"Ye cannae even fight!" Me said pointin at the orc on the ground. "Ye be more
work than ye worth! Me reputation might not be s'good but it be a fair one. If me
take ye on then it be nothin and me be the laughin stock O the arena!"
"So you do have some pride." The ratani comments. "We can fight and as a
manager your job would be to improve on our qualities. I'll double your price."
Involuntarily, me eyebrow raised. Me was thinking ta meself with that kind O
money the training room oot at Daidi teaghlach troid seomra would get O few more
trainin gear and maybe me could turn Clan Crow inta even better fighters. Me wheels
be beginning ta turn. "Sit down." Me said takin me seat again. "All O you." Me
motioned ta the chairs around the table. "If me be takin on this team, and that be a
big 'IF' then me be needin ta be knowin more aboot ya."
Reluctantly, they sat. "Lets be startin with names." The ratani be first ta
speak and her name be HR, she in turn introduced the golemn who be named, Office, CEO
be the orc and Supvsr be the elf.
"Ye dannae have a full team?"
"We have another one coming next week to make our fifth. He was promoted
within." HR responded.
"Promoted within?" Me arched me other eyebrow.
"We are from a local corporation that has an interest in investing in the arena.
Our means of doing that is to elect the best in our company and create a team. We
take that team and go for the top in the process creating profits for ourselves and
the company. So in essence we will provide our own replacements should something
happen. Your job is to simply train us as best you can so that we win and in return
you will be compensated monetarily. Do you find our terms agreeable?"
HR made sense she did as did her name and all O the others. Me thought aboot it
for a minute, going over it all in me head. The money probably would be good but the
money dinnae really matter ta me. Me already had a decent team so that dinnae really
matter ta me either. What appealed ta me be that me might get ta see the whole lot
get their pampas arses whooped and that had entertainin qualities. They'd be getting
just deserts likely and would draw good crowds, all O which me would find enjoyment
in. A few bets in the right areas and me could make more than they probably be
offerin.
"Talk money." I replied.
"Fifty golds a week plus we pay meals for us, you and your other team as well as
reasonable expenses."
"Ye got ye self O deal on two conditions." Me responded.
"What will that be? I believe we have made a rather generous offer." There be
that look again. Me was goin ta enjoy watchin them get their arses whooped!
"Me get ta be pickin ye team name and no matter what it be that's the deal."
She looked at me skeptically. "Second while trainin ye all be doin as ye told.
Period."
"Mr. Owsly you have a deal." The first smile be splittin that pretty face but
it still be havin that snooty, serious look ta it. Me spit in me hand and extended
it ta seal the deal. She looked at me with disgust as though it was beyond her.
They all did except Office, the golemn, who shook me hand and grunted approvingly.

Cant help but feel that my ascent to the throne here has been a tad on the
uneventful side, void of any real excitement, drama, or pizzazz . Just another
striker going through the motions. Unfortunately I think I ended up in Hummingbird's
shadow for most of my career, and while snagging the throne at a mere 23 matches in
an arena of this caliber is nothing to scoff at, I guess it does somewhat pale in
comparison. Not that my manager was the most attentive to begin with.
Not being much of a risk-taker my challenges this turn will go to Chupuca from
Surperior Forces, and Bookmark from the Cartel, both warriors whom I have recently
beaten from teams that are currently challenging for the top team. I doubt the
managers of those two teams consider mine much of a rival, but since he insists on
considering THEM as such I'll humor him.
I haven't really made any enemies nor allies on my path here, but would like to
acknowledge Kid Charlemange for our three early career matchups, all very enjoyable
and exiting, Regina Spectre for being the only warrior to get the jump on me so far
(although in my defense I was wearing chainmail to that fight for some inexplicable
reason), and finally Ornery Ocelot for the fight for the throne. Glad that kill
didn't last. 'Grats on your graduation!

Well, what are you looking at, SHADOWSPIRE? Ain't you never seen Snide Clemens
before? Ah, shaddup and listen to my news. Later days, DRAGONBANE GUILD, since
OTTO'S DINER took top team from you this turn, you guys are old news. Why not, I'm
having a good day, so I feel sorry for OF WOLF AND MAN, who went 1-4-0 and dropped 13
into 17th. Here's my pity, for what it's worth. CAPITAL CARTEL turned their 3-2-0
turn into a 5th place rank in the listings this turn. Any better than this, and you
get put on hit lists. Gee, I'm impressed, a 4-1-1 is nice, but don't get cocky,
DARQUE AGES, the Fates teach humility, and the Fates are proud. Of course, we're all
terribly impressed to see HUGH CAPET win a fight and gain 40 points, terribly. Tsk,
tsk, VIRGINIA WOOLF beat PRONATE and PRONATE lost 18 points. You're breakin' my
heart. VIRIDIO challenged SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster for a shot at the throne. And
it's out with the old, in with the new, as VIRIDIO takes the Title and last week's
bar tab from the old Duelmaster. Heh, heh. Kickbacks and bribes, kickbacks and
bribes, how else do you think some of these guys win their fights? Skill? Ha!
He who fights and runs away will live to fight another day, the coward. What's
the big D? CAPITAL CARTEL was the most avoided team? Bunch of lily livered...
grumble... mumble... curse... And who led the way in this mass act of cowardice?
Let's see, well, whatcha know? It was LITERATE LOONS. Ha ha ha ha! GUTTER BALL was
challenged more times this turn than the Duelmaster. Now was the DM insulted or
feared? Heh, heh.
Death and Taxes. The less death I see, the more it taxes my patience. Let's
see if anyone's dead or dying. Bye bye, warrior, bye bye... REGINA SPECTRE, a
glorious 16-10-0 fighter, has passed away. Gee, too bad THE RED BLADES. Ya gotta go
sometime, and PINK BUNNY's time was this time. Hmmm, not a bad fighter, had she
lived... (what? me pity?). Not that I'll be buying the drinks, but I'll be glad to
see PIOTR COTTONTAIL and FUZZY BUNNIES at The Warty Toad tonight celebrating their
bloodfeud victory over SALAMI SLAM. Titanium shields and bamboo daggers, guess what
brave team is developing these kinds of weapons?
What does the SHADOWSPIRE arena have in common with the inns? It's just as
comfortable to sleep in either place. Ha ha ha ha! Well, I've had enough of this
drivel, and I'm sure you have too. Off like a dirty shirt of padded leather. Glad
