THE SHADOWSPIRE TURN 100 EXTRAVAGANZA !!! Shadowspire arena officially opened on January 16, 2007 with an inaugural class of 44 teams. Two of those teams pulled off a 5-0 turn (JUST CHILLIN and CLAN LONGBEARD), but no one was able to snag the throne as RAMA THE SHARK of DEATHONTHESANDS and FULTON of WAR MACHINE tied for the top spot with 12 recognition points. Of those initial 44 teams, only 6 have remained listed in the Shadowspire newsletter through all 99 turns (CLAN LONGBEARD, LA PENTARCHIE, DRAGONBANE GUILD, LITERATE LOONS, AND WARMASTERS). The SYP has enjoyed collecting the fun facts over the past 99 turns. Shadowspire has certainly been a fun experience and it is rare that managers in this era of Duel2 can grow with an arena from turn 1. Shadowspire offered this unique opportunity and the response has been overwhelmingly positive as the arena continues to buzz with activity. We hope you enjoy our very special Turn 100 EXTRAVAGANZA! Without further ado... *Duelmasters* There is no greater individual honor for a warrior of Shadowspire than that coveted position of Duelmaster. Over 99 turns, Shadowspire has seen many warriors attain the throne. Here are some facts about the mighty Duelmasters of Shadowspire. **25 Teams Have Celebrated a Duelmaster **Teams with the Most Turns Upon the Throne: Dragonbane Guild (10); American Muscle (9); Clan Longbeard, Darque Ages, Le Pentarchie, Warmasters (6); House of Hearts, Of Wolf and Man, Summerborn (5); and Kellumbos Kids and Rodent Clan (4). **Most Consecutive Turns on Throne: 76 Gran Torino (6) - Turns 14 through 20 **Most Kills: Slaughtermouse 5 (4) - Turn 67 **Highest Rated Duelmaster (recognition): 76 Gran Torino (173) Turn 20 **Lowest Rated Duelmaster (recognition): Alberta Clipper (33) Turn 3 **Duelmasters KILLED ON THRONE: Aldebaran Turn 12; Ornery Ocelot Turn 96 (It should be noted that Ornery Ocelot died as an immortal warrior on his way to the Isle, making Aldebaran the only mortal DM to die) **Duelmasters by Style: Striker (31); Lunger (23); Wall of Steel (12); Slasher and Aimed Blow (7); Total Parry (6); Basher (5); Parry Lunge (3); Parry Riposte (1); Parry Strike (0) *Top Teams* Nothing speaks to a teams present domination more than the Current Top Team position. Unlike the individual awards, Top Team puts the entire gladiatorial stable in the spotlight. It also serves as a better measurement than Career Win/Loss to speak of a teams recent fortunesa very useful tool when issuing challenges. **Best 3-Turn Team Record: Kellumbos Kids (15-0-0) Turn 10 **Most Top Team Awards: Kellumbos Kids (12); La Pentarchie (8); Warmasters (7); Capital Cartel, Clan Longbeard, Dragonbane Guild (5) *Teams on the Move* A single turn of glory and a free fight can be gained by any team by gaining more recognition than the others. Here are Shadowspires top 5 point gainers. **Unholy Knights (87) Turn 85; 4-Letter Cavemen (85) Turn 14; Fuchi Owned (79) Turn 24; Dragonbane Guild (77) Turns 19 and 50; American Muscle (75) Turn 40 *Avoiders and Avoidees* The Word Golem keeps telling me that avoidees isnt an actual word! We here at the SYP believe you are either adding to the language or holding it back, so we submit avoidee, plural avoidees as our contribution to the Common tongue. Stupid golem! Anyway, tactics are always important and who you fight is just as important as who you DO NOT fight. Following is an analysis of the Gladiatorial Commissions avoid report through the turns. **Top 5 Avoided Teams: Kellumbos Kids (47); Of Wolf and Man (12); The Mongoloids II (9); Superior Forces NT (7); Capital Cartel (4) **Top 5 Avoiding Teams: La Pentarchie (20); Warmasters, Dragonbane Guild (12); Clan Longbeard (7); Clan Ironfist (4) *The Dead* We turn to more somber matters in this section. Death is inevitable and a bit more permanent in Shadowspire when compared to many other arenas since participation in the annual Tournament of the Dead and the use of a resurrection potion is prohibited. **In 99 Turns of fighting, only 2 Turns have ever passed without a death (T77 and T79) **843 warriors have died in 99 turns. **526 deaths have come via the Dark Arena **20 deaths were Dark Arena fighters **14 deaths were Arena Stand Bys **3 warriors have fallen to Arena Stand Bys (Octavian of Warmasters and Desmus Maximus of Team Sludge fell to Embezzling Scribe; Dagarad from Of Wolf and Man fell to Convicted Thief) **Most Deaths (Team): Of Wolf and Man (47); Fuchi Owned (35); Rodent Clan (33); Ale House Mercs (30); Big Lake Outcasts (28) 20 warriors have been sent to the Dark Arena only to return to their manager ALIVE! Of those 20 warriors, 2 have gone onto immortality on the Isle of the Eye (Nuyen Nick of Fuchi Owned and Liberius of Warmasters). Only one warrior has visited the Dark Arena TWICE and survived to tell the tale (Kid Charlemagne of The Red Blades). *The Immortal* In 99 Turns, 98 warriors have attained immortality. While there are too many graduates to mention individually, the SYP does wish to recognize those who have sent the most ot the Isle from Shadowspire and those we consider the best of their style. Since many best of categories are considered subjective popularity contests, the SYP will rely upon W/L% at graduation (the turn a warrior is invited to ADM) as the measuring stick. **FAST GRADUATES: Of the 98 graduates from Shadowspire, only 4 have received their invite for the Isle in the 20 FE mark. These warriors are 76 Gran Torino of American Muscle; Chakhari of Kellumbos Kids; Copernicus of Darque Ages; and Hummingbird of Summerborn. **Aimed Blow The Small Cat of La Pentarchie (22-11-2; 65.63%) **Basher Mouse of Pain of Rodent Clan (14-9-0; 60.87%) **Lunger 76 Gran Torino of American Muscle (15-5-1; 75.00%) **Parry Lunge Flor of Cult of Bacchus (26-14-0; 65.00%) **Parry Riposte Wee Beastie of Unholy Knights (17-8-1; 68.00%) **Parry Strike None (no Piker has ever been invited to the Isle from Shadowspire) **Slasher Orc Chops of Fuchi Owned (18-11-0; 62.07%) **Striker Hummingbird of Summerborn (16-4-0; 80.00%) **Total Parry Low and Away of Capital Cartel (23-4-0; 85.19%) **Wall of Steel Copernicus of Darque Ages (18-2-0; 90.00%) **TOP 5 TEAMS WITH MOST GRADUATES: Le Pentarchie and Warmasters (9); Clan Longbeard and Dragonbane Guild (8); Kellumbos Kids, Darque Ages, and Literate Loons (6); Of Wolf and Man (5); The Draugs and Rodent Clan (4). *Odds, Ends, and the Big Finish* To cover the milestones of every single turn would cause your head to explode and the Editor of Shadowspires NL to put out a contract for my life (if she hasnt already). Following is a timeline of events we here at the SYP thought were memorable. If you dont like our titles, next time well outsource it to Rodent Clan! *T1-Shadowspires Inaugural Turn -- The concept for this arena was introduced as early as 2005 by Lord Xiang (perhaps even earlier by some reports), but it was Doc LeGrand who got the wheels turning and made the arena a reality. *T2-Beginning of an Error or Era -- First Edition of the SYP runs in the NL *T3-The Homecoming King is... -- Shadowspire crowns its first DM Alberta Clipper of Just Chillin *T7-Census? The Kid shot me a nasty sidelong look, then returned to his peeping. I decided he wasnt going to get out of my way, so I crouched low and dropped to my knees. I brushed aside some sort of aromatic purple-flowered plant; clusters of these things surrounded the immediate area around the taverns out-house. I eased myself down and crawled forward through the thick, well-manicured hedge that meandered throughout the taverns property. There were a few thorns, but I always travel steel-skinned, so it was not an issue. I was surprised that it was so easy to sneak up on people in this place. Sure, the hedges around here were uncommonly thick, and crammed solid with clusters of long, needle-like thorns, but it was nothing special to write home about. The Bunnies were probably spending some decent coin for some privacy, and they were being cheated. Oh well.... The leaves were a deep, dark green, with fine, bright orange veins running riot throughout their glossy surfaces. Their velvet touch tickled my face and neck as I squirmed underneath their branches as quietly as I could. I found a small patch of soft ground at the edge of some open space, and gently pulled aside a few stray branches of hedge. The "private" side courtyard was now spread out in front of me. It was one big enclosed circle. A couple of massive round tables fit neatly in the circular space. The tables were carved from a dark stone shot through with sparkling flecks that flashed when they caught the trembling torchlight. Flagstones of the same stone material made a neat sphere to contain the space. It was well done. A small fountain tinkled to my left. I guess it helped mask stray sounds. It was working, too; I could hear the Bunnys voices, but I couldnt make out what they were saying. A faint rustling noise on my left announced Arcanes arrival. Now it was my turn to give him a glare, which he-of course-ignored. "If Im down here," I whispered hoarsely, "and you're down here, whos watching our backs?!" "Numitor, of course," replied the Kid softly with that annoying, dismissive wave of his. I had forgotten about Numitor "Wasnt he watching the horses?" I asked. Arcane shrugged but didnt take his eyes off the three Bunnies. I made a note to slap Numitor around a little, assuming we made it out of this situation without mishap. The Arcane Kid is not well known for his textbook adventures. Dont get me wrong; Arcane can write out the perfect, pristine plan. Its just that nothing seems to work exactly the way he figures it will. "Do you have that list?" the Kid whispered. I had to twist and roll a little, but eventually I pulled out the folded square of parchment that we had bought earlier that day. I handed it to the Kid; he carefully unfolded it and began to read. His eyes gave off that eerie blue glow... it was a little unnerving to watch him read in the darkness. "It looks like our information was correct," nodded Arcane to himself. "It seems that Bugs and Fluffy were given their walking papers." "The Dark Arena lists are public, you know." The Kid shrugged. "One never knows. Remember my motto: Trust, but Verify." Nothing left for me to do but try to get comfortable while the three Bunnies drank and chatted. There wasnt any laughing, but then again I didnt think there would be. Still, this ground was pliant and comfortable; broad-leaved trailing vines of some sort covered the ground where we lay. "Kid, weve been watching these guys for almost a month now," I whispered. "They dont have my saddlebags; that means they dont have the lists. What the hell are we doing here?" "Ssshhh!" Arcane gestured toward the tables. The three Bunnies had stood. A woman had entered. Not the help. Her hair was dark, and hung in long curls around her shoulders. Her features were decidedly human, though it was difficult to see much from where I lay. She wore a burnished armor that covered her from neck to boots; it seemed like scale mail, but the design was sharper, somehow. She carried a brace of short swords at her waist; the handles seemed well-worn. The Bunnies treated her with a great deal of respect. "Kid, dya think that This...." "No. A messenger. Shut up!" Arcane murmured. I started to feel an unnatural urge to scratch my neck and wrists. Instead, I rubbed them hard and watched the woman as she sauntered around the periphery of the flagstones. Her gait was smooth and strong; I think she probably knew how to get the most out of those short swords. She was talking, but I still couldnt make out words. Nice voice, though. Strong and sweet at the same time. I was beginning to be envious of the Bunnies, but then I had an ugly thought. "Kid, do you know what sort of plant this is?" "Ssshhh," hissed Arcane. "I think that we might finally get a glimpse of this Daemonspawn character." "Im crawling around in the dark just so you can get his autograph?" I grumbled. "Havoc, be still," murmured the Kid. "We have no dependable descriptions, no sketches or drawings. This agent of his might just be the clue Ive been seeking." "Try joining his fan club," I suggested. The Kid ignored me. I tried to relax and let the time slide by, but I began to feel apprehensive. I couldnt help it. I was really starting to get uncomfortable by then. My scalp and my palms began to itch too. Scratching just made it worse, but I couldnt seem to stop. I guess I was moving a little too much. "Havoc, be still!" hissed Arcane. As if I wasnt trying! Now I realized why this little private tavern didnt rely much on walls or guards to keep interlopers at bay. Just a little fertilizer and some water was all they needed! I kept rubbing my palms; I tried hard not to scratch madly at them. The sides of my neck and my ears began to burn. The Kid shot me a funny look; it was hard to see anything but the glow of his eyes in the dark. I felt a warm wetness on my hands. I sniffed. Yeah, it was blood. My blood. I heard and saw the glossy leaves of the hedges tremble; I felt the vines underneath me quiver. "Kid, Im getting the hell out of here!" I growled. I squirmed backwards out of the hedges and crawled back behind the privy. Numitor almost jumped out of his scalemail when I stood. I wanted to smack that idiot for leaving his post, but decided that I was desperate to wash my hands and neck and hair instead. I ran to the horses. * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * }%|[-----+O+-----]|%{ * TIMES ARE CHANGING As he sat on his throne on the first day after having been sworn in, King Bar Ack-Ack Obomba, leader of all Alastari, decided it was time to act. He had promised change, and, by golly, with all the money that was paid for all those votes, he was going to cash in! Yes! He walked to his televised podium, turned on his teleprompter, and began his speech, which had been prepared almost as long ago as his birth in the hills of Pockisstan. He began "Hear ye, hear ye. Can you all hear in the back row of the press room? Okay. Well, as you all know, the Alistarian riff-raff have all proclaimed me to be a godling and expect me to live out my lifelong dreams of declaring Alastari a socialistic state. Therefore, today I am announcing three major changes to our way of life. Everyone will be excited and pleased as all riff-raff enjoys it when their god-king decrees. NUMBER ONE. Effective immediately, winners of TCs in both Mailers and Face-To- Face will give their prizes to any poor soul manager, except himself, who had a warrior with an opher. If the Tcer has any difficulty choosing a poor soul, the Central Government will establish a committee to review and select a lowly nominee for the TCer. This committee shall take no longer than six months to decide and shall be comprised of only those members of my loyal party--The Mule Muckers. NUMBER TWO, Effective November 1, 2010, all arena managers must fight all five warriors. The tax for fighting five will be an additional ten per cent over the present level. The fee for fighting from zero to four warriors will be a contribution of ten gallons of fuel (Which, by the way, I decreed all fuel to be ten dollars per gallon yesterday.) to my personal Air Force One Fund. In addition to the requirement of fighting all five warriors, each manager must earn a 2-2-1 record (Two wins, two losses and one tie.) each and every round. The penalty for noncompliance shall be the loss of one finger or toe for each violation. Because of your benevolent king, you all now have health care and insurance, so that should be considered a blessing. You are welcome. NUMBER THREE, Effective November 1, 3010, Duel 2 must be completely green. All papers must be light green and all print dark green. And, because of our advancement to full socialism by that time, everyone can play free. (The taxes and penalties shall remain in effect, however.) I am sure we are all pleased with these positive changes to our society. I have done much in my first two days on the job, and will be taking Air Force One to Alaska for a highly needed vacation tomorrow. Along with some wonderful hunting and fishing, I want to see if I can capture that loud-mouthed sow that has been creating so much ruckus. Wish me well." With that, King Bar Ack-Ack Obomba, left the podium, and went back to his office to count the new tax money collected that day. "I'll need some spending money in Alaska." he thought. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. The Jugger had been spending the morning enjoying the especially fine oatmeal stout that his brother the Bartender had recommended to him. It was an amazing brew, silky in texture, medium dry, a complex velvet palate, and a bittersweet finish. "Bittersweet," the Jugger thought to himself. "What a concept!" Two letters had arrived that morning of which the first was a report from Shadowspire. It seemed as though Hummingbird, the old champion he'd put in charge of his Shadowspire crew had finally managed to coach the guys there to a winning turn there, of which the striker Midnight Sun's battle for the title was the highlight. The striker had challenged Zevran the Aimed Blow and in an almost unbelievable fashion bested him. True to form he had grabbed the initiative, this time with a massive broadsword swipe to Zevran's leg, followed by three rapid strikes to head then torso. Somehow Zevran not only withstood those initial blows but managed a parry on the fifth strike, followed by a quick riposte to M Sun's right hand, then another one to the arm. Stunned M Sun dropped his sword and started fumbling for his backup weapon. He didn't have the time to grab it before Zevran's scimitar whirled on him again. He threw himself to the left dodging one blow, dropped to his knees dodging another, then out of nowhere, when a loss seemed certain spun into something looking much like a roundhouse punch and caught Zevran square in the neck. Zevran's full helmet rung like a big bell as M Sun managed to do with his fist what he hadn't managed with a sword: Earn his title back. The Jugger chuckled to himself, and despite his vow never to leave his beloved Murska again actually wished he could have been there. Perhaps if August ever got a shot at the title he'd make an exception. Just maybe. Then his eyes fell on the second of the two letters on the desk in front of him. It was the call for the tournament of the dead. How he hated this tournament. Every year it was a reminder of how hope these days filled him with more dread than actual loss. How many times had he had to watch his old proteges, partially resurrected, gruesome and seething with puss and decay running down their once such beautiful faces, reanimated on the sands fight for their lives back? Thrice? Ten times? He didn't know. He didn't want to know. The once so stunning Lucia, the insanely talented Cecilia Lind, the speedy protege Soledad with the almost maddeningly persistent good humor, always with a smile on his lips and a prank in his mind. The Jugger kept staring at the letter. It was a promise of hope and of disappointment, a certainty of despair and a whisper of joy. He was going to get to see them all again once more, and then he was going to get to lose them all once more. He takes a final swig of the stout. How very bittersweet.... SPY REPORT Okay, excuses first: I'm sick, and I've got horrible demons breathing down my neck for this spy report. On a more cheerful note, I see that times have spoiled us. I can remember (just) days when fifty-seven fights was not unusual in any, now it only happens (other than here), in Talahya, Primus, and sometimes Crysalis. Okay, and maybe North Fork now that they've started another turf war. So let's have a few notes of interest here: Going five and oh this time we have Darque Ages! Greatest point gain, A.E. Housman. Greatest point loss, Eltnor. Same fight. The Duelmaster got the most challenges, which is as it should be. Superior Forces NT was most avoided, by Capital Cartel As previously noted, fifty-seven fights, only two standbys. Thirty-three challenges! (None of them TV.) The thirty-three challenges include bloodfeuds and DA challenges. I'm going to mention the challenge fights, but I don't really know you guys yet. If, for reasons that escape me, you want to hear more from me in other spy reports, just say the word. Odd-numbered turns would be better, though. ORIGAMI (81-1420) (1-2-0,6) of PAPER TIGERS challenged DJUNA BARNES (81-1425) (2-0-0,9) of LITERATE LOONS. Up 3. ORIGAMI assassinated DJUNA BARNES in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. Oh, tough! This is starting us off with blood. EL CID (81-1443) (1-0-0,10) of DARQUE AGES challenged NUMITOR (81-1379) (3-4- 0,14) of ARCHAIC CHAOS. Up 4. EL CID overpowered NUMITOR in a 2 minute one-sided Challenge match. And if Numitor's face was red, it wasn't all blood. Tcha! ANNA HIPPOLYTE (81-1427) (1-1-0,12) of THE RED BLADES challenged ASSERIUS (81- 1377) (3-4-0,13) of WARMASTERS. Up 1. ANNA HIPPOLYTE overpowered ASSERIUS in a 1 minute uneven Challenge duel. The things some women will do to get a date! ST JOE STRUMMER (81-1439) (1-0-0,6) of SUMMERBORN challenged HECTOR (81-1392) (1-4-0,9) of FAR TRAVELERS. Up 3. ST JOE STRUMMER was beaten by HECTOR in a 3 minute Challenge fight. I'm sure Hector was glad to win one. I figure he got the short end of the stick at Troy. PETRONIUS (81-1434) (0-1-0,1) of WARMASTERS challenged LUKE WAYFARE (81-1413) (1-3-0,6) of THE RED BLADES. Up 5. PETRONIUS overcame LUKE WAYFARE in an action packed 1 minute amateur's Challenge bout. Luke, you idiot! PANDERA PAX (81-1406) (2-3-0,9) of ARCHAIC CHAOS challenged ARABIAN KNIGHT (81- 1445) (1-0-0,13) of UNHOLY KNIGHTS. Up 4. PANDERA PAX overpowered ARABIAN KNIGHT in a 1 minute gory uneven Challenge duel. Can he last for one thousand and one, if he falls so quickly now?
