                                   Policy Review

The sun was fierce and relentless; it beat down on the polished but dented
helmets of three exhausted recruits as they stumbled through the obstacle course for
the third time that day. They wore thickly padded leather armor, old and criss-
crossed with irregular scraps, and stained with sweat. Some of these haphazard
repairs hinted at injuries that the former owners probably hadn't survived.
     "C'mon! C'mon! This thing ain't that tough!"
A broad-shouldered man stood to the side of the path. He was obviously a
veteran warrior. He wore a dark, well-oiled byrnie that reached from his neck and
elbows to his knees. The bottom was split in the front and back to allow for easier
movement. His body movements bespoke power and speed, yet they were smooth and
balanced. He was irritated, perhaps frustrated, but in a strangely controlled way.
The veteran's manner suggested a reserve of sudden violence kept in check. His face
was darkly tanned, with tiny scars woven into the seams and creases surrounding his
narrowed eyes and sneering frown. His hair was grizzled and cropped short; the top
of his head resembled an old brush.
The man watched the recruits intently as they staggered up to a steep rock wall.
Their hands touched the rough and uneven surface of the wall. Their heads craned
back as they squinted up at the top. The wall was a little over four meters high.
The struggle between despair and determination played across their shiny faces as
they gathered their strength.
A piercing shriek of purple light suddenly coalesced on the path behind the
recruits. They turned and winced and struggled back against the wall, trying to hide
from the sound--one covered his ears--staring in wonder as the light dimmed and
died away. The slender figure of a young man in a blue silk robe materialized. He
stood in the path watching them intently.
"Don't stare at him, you idiots!" yelled the mailed veteran. "Climb that wall!
Climb it NOW!"
The recruits quickly looked at each other, at their trainer, at the new stranger
smiling thinly at them. Marshalling themselves, breathing deeply, they turned and
began their climb.
"Havoc!" the young man said sharply. "Give them some rest, will you? We need
to talk, anyway."
The recruits, one quarter of the way up and clutching precariously at the rough
and uneven wall, looked towards their mailed trainer. Their sweat-soaked stares held
a strange mixture of hope and pessimism. Havoc's frown deepened as he took a long,
deep breath. He glared at the young man, who had moved closer to him. The youth's
movements were so fluid he had appeared to glide over the sandy ground.
"Fine! Okay! Get over the wall, and then get cleaned up! You've all got
scullery duty tonight! All of you! So hurry it up! Hurry!" Havoc punctuated his
words with small stones that pinged off their helmets as he spoke, spurring the
recruits to a new effort.
Havoc and the young man stood silently, side by side, watching the three scrape
and struggle steadily up the wall. Once they began their slow descent, Havoc turned
and headed towards a small shack about 50 meters away. The young man smiled briefly
and followed, easily keeping up with Havoc's angry stride.
"What's the point of trying to kill them off during training?" asked the Arcane
Kid. "I thought that was the intention of the Dark Arena matches."
"Oh, just shut yer pie hole!" retorted Havoc through gritted teeth.
Arcane shrugged his slender shoulders and said nothing until the pair reached
the shack. A big, brass-hooped barrel on a three-legged stand stood in the shade of
a narrow and rickety porch. A large ladle hung at its side. Havoc threw off the
leather cover and dipped the ladle inside. Gulping greedily, he dipped the ladle
half a dozen times into the barrel. After sating his thirst, Havoc wiped his mouth
with the back of his wide hand, hung the ladle, and recovered the barrel. Ignoring
Arcane, who stood by with a bored expression on his thin face, Havoc lifted the latch
and entered the shack, slamming the door closed behind him.
Arcane entered and left the door open. There was just enough room inside for a
small table and two wide chairs, a bunk bed against one wall, and a fireplace with a
deep hearth. Havoc had thrown himself into one of the chairs. He studied the ashes
in the fireplace and didn't look up as Arcane took the other chair and maneuvered it
so that it took in both Havoc and the fireplace. They sat for several minutes before
Arcane spoke.
"Havoc, I realize what you're trying to do. Honestly. I get it. But you
shouldn't expect too much from them."
"What do you know?!" growled Havoc. "We gotta do our best for 'em, Kid. We
gotta try to prepare 'em."
"Certainly, certainly," nodded Arcane. "On the other hand, we shouldn't try to
train them to death either."
"Aaawww...." Havoc expelled a pent up breath and dragged his chair so that he
could face the Arcane Kid squarely. He leaned forward and pointed a thick finger at
Arcane's face, almost touching his nose.
"It woulda been better off, for them and for us, if you had just sent this lot
to the D.A. like I told ya!!" Havoc threw himself back in his chair and grasped the
sturdy lacquered armrests tightly. "Kid, ya know these guys ain't gonna last! I
figure they'll all three lose for sure, and I guess at least one is gonna die! Do I
NEED this in my life right now??"
The Kid looked up at the broad-beamed ceiling and sighed. He rearranged himself
in the chair without looking at Havoc before raising his head and meeting Havoc's
angry eyes.
"You know I deplore your training methods, but we have agreed that you should
train the men, and I should manage the paperwork. Isn't this true?"
"Yeah," Havoc nodded with a jerk of his head. "So what's yer point?"
"It's about statistics," replied Arcane with a wave of a slender hand. "It's
about playing the odds." The Kid sighed and tilted his head. "You and I both know
that this arena is tough. But what makes it so difficult? Have you given any
serious consideration to that?"
"What do you mean?" Havoc scowled. "Does this mean I gotta sit through another
lecture?"
"I just asked you a simple question, Havoc. What makes this arena so difficult?
It can't be the so-called 'sandbaggers' can it? There are no warriors being groomed
for the tournaments, at least not in Shadowspire." Havoc grunted in agreement. "So
what is so hard about this place?"
Havoc shifted uneasily in his chair, releasing his grip on the armrests. He
began rubbing his calloused hands lightly along their polished surfaces.
"I dunno, Kid. The lack of decent recruits, I guess. That's a biggie in my
book!"
"Yes, but we've discussed avoids and challenges before, too," replied Arcane.
"I've been thinking about it, and I believe that this is the more relevant factor."
Havoc looked quizzically at the Kid. "Yer kiddin' me, right?" Arcane shook his
head slowly. "Ya gotta be kiddin' me."
"Just think about it for a moment. These warriors are warriors more in name and
spirit than in actual potential--"
"Ya got THAT right!" interjected Havoc.
"But wait, wait--" Arcane held up his hand. Havoc stifled a remark. "When the
recruits come out of the gate for the first time, there are NO challenges, there are
ONLY random match-ups." The Kid smiled expectantly. Havoc's frown deepened.
"So what? Kid, is that the best ya got?" Havoc clutched the armrests again; his
knuckles grew white.
"Calm down; calm down. Think about this for a moment and tell me something. Do
you seriously believe that any of the other teams in Shadowspire are getting better
recruits than we are? More often, I mean."
Havoc relaxed and let go the armrests, crossing his arms across his broad mailed
chest instead. "Ya gotta point here?"
"You have an answer for me?" replied Arcane.
"Yeah, yeah, sure!" retorted Havoc. "I think a lot of these teams are dealin'
dirty! They gotta be!"
Arcane shook his head. "That's not what my research tells me. Certainly, every
now and then someone like Hippodaemia comes along... but that sort of recruit is
rare. Rare for us, and rare for everyone."
"What's yer blasted point?" grunted Havoc. "Kid, yer startin' to ex-hasperate
me."
"Well, think about it," sighed Arcane. "If everyone's getting the same caliber
of replacement, and there are so many new replacements every round--" The Kid paused
for a few moments and waited for Havoc to 'catch up'.
"And since new replacements usually get matched up together at random--"
muttered Havoc with a gleam in his eye.
"There's no challenge strategy involved, and the odds are as even as they can
be!" finished Arcane with a flourish of his hand. "Yes, I realize that these
fighters are probably going to lose their first time out. Or they might match up
with a slightly more experienced fighter--but it won't be a huge mismatch, will it?
And yes, one or two might even die. But this is the best chance any of them will
have to win. Their only chance, really."
Havoc uncrossed his arms and clapped slowly. "Bravo, Kid. Bravo." Arcane
smiled and made a short bow from his chair. Havoc crossed his arms again. "So yer
tellin' me that we're gonna kill 'em off anyways, right? We're just gonna try to use
'em for a quick win before sendin' them to a little 'night training', is that it?"
     "Yes, in a nutshell."
"Why not just say so in the first place?"
The Kid shrugged. "I wanted you to understand the 'why' of it, I suppose. I
hate wasting time and money feeding and training and equipping these worthless louts.
They need to provide us with some way of mitigating their cost."
"Bettin' on if they make it past minute one in the Dark Arena is one way,"
nodded Havoc.
"Yes, yes, that's one way," agreed Arcane as he rolled his eyes toward the
ceiling. "But I'm trying to get some endorsements, some good press in the city's
gladiatorial newsletters. We need to spike our record up for that."
"Endorsements?" Havoc peered at the Kid quizzically. "What endorsements?"
"Well, haven't you seen the signs outside some of the blacksmiths and armory
shops? 'We provide The Consortium with all their weapons.' Or, 'La Pentarchie buys
their armor here.' I see that sort of thing all the time. It makes my blood boil!"
Havoc chuckled for a few moments while the Arcane Kid waited patiently for him
to stop.
"If yer waitin' for one of these places to offer us some coin, or free weapons
or somethin', you'll be waitin' a long, long time, Kid!" laughed Havoc.
"Not necessarily," replied the Kid with a thin smile. "We just need to get to
the top five of the Win-Loss Record for the last three turns. Just that far, and
I've been promised a deal with one of the local armory shops."
"Yeah?" Havoc stopped laughing but kept a suspicious smirk. He stared
speculatively at the Kid for a few long moments. "Okay," he said finally. "Okay, I
know ya want me to ask. Whatta we get out of this deal? Coin? Armor? Weapons?"
"Well, weapons, sort of." Arcane waved his hand dismissively. "Don't worry
about it. The point I'm making here is that we need to worry about our record, our
standings in the arena. At least our recent standings. And that's my job, and it
benefits both of us, so please work with me."
"Uh huh." Havoc had stopped smiling. "Just spill it, Kid. Whatta we get?"
"Um, well," Arcane fidgeted uncomfortably in his chair. "I made a deal to take
some of the surplus weapons off an armory's hands at 25% of their retail cost. That
is a huge discount on their part, and a significant bargain for us. In exchange,
they will put up a sign saying we buy our weapons from there. That's called
'marketing'. It's good business."
"What?!" Havoc snorted. "'Good business'? That ain't exactly 'free', now is it?"
The Kid shrugged and smiled; he raised his hands, palm up. Havoc suddenly became
suspicious.
"Wait a minute! Hold on! What 'surplus weapons' are we talkin' about here?"
"Oh, just some odds and ends that this armory hasn't been able to move, that's
all." Arcane suddenly but smoothly stood up and began to head out the door.
"KID!" yelled Havoc. Arcane paused on the threshold and looked over his
shoulder. He gave a brief smile. "What weapons?!" demanded Havoc.
"Well... war flails, mauls, and morning-stars mostly, I believe..." The Kid
began to glow, dissolving into a purple light amid a screeching cry.
"Get back here, you $%#@%# miserable little punk!!" Havoc caught a brief glimpse
of a half-dematerialized wave as the Arcane Kid made his exit.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

It feels good to be king. The throne is very comfortable and the view is
spectacular. These pealed grapes are very fresh and refreshing. The wine is a Pinot
Noir with a long, lingering and elegant finish. You should see the cheese spread.
I'm no artisan but I see some nice blues and my favorite one smells like the socks I
wore in my last fight. Smells bad but dang does it tastes so yummy. Okay, I said
yummy, the wine must be kicking in now.
Let's get down to business. It's an honor to be here. I hope to be back next
turn to enjoy the comforts of being Duelmaster. Let's go down the list and find my
challenges:
'68 Roadrunner, no, he's a teammate. Roadrunner, I know we're teammates and you
said you were happy for me, but it has to be bittersweet. One point separated us
from the throne. I know you've waited a lot time. I'm sure you'll be here soon
enough.
'66 Corvette is another teammate, as well. Vette, I thought I was up and coming.
You're a stud or should I say studette?
Kiss My Grits, already fought and beat him plus he's leaving for the AD. Sorry,
but as Flo used to say to Mel, kiss my grits.
Heinrik, here we go. I finally found someone who's not a teammate and not
graduating. There's challenge one.
Who's next? Zog, nope. Don't like the name and Le Pentarque would blow a fuse
if I DC him again.
Okay, next is Doppleganger. Don't know much about him but I did hear Hombre and
Elephant cracking up the other day about a few dopplegangers they ran into. So what
the hey, let's try him.
So, Heinrik and Dopple, here I come. May the best warrior come out on top with
honor and victory.
A special thanks to Bowtie Bob for leaving the throne vacated for me. Thanks
for not destroying the throne room after that victory party you held in here. So was
the bowtie formal or more for comedic purposes?
It's time to go sharpen the sword. No armor this fight. This Tommy Bahama silk
shirt should do. My entry into the codex comes from Abraham Lincoln, "When you have
got an elephant by the hind leg, and he is trying to run away, it is best to let him
run." The memento is a Hot Wheel of a 1969 Ford Fairlane Cobra.

     Until next time,
          Fairlane Cobra
               Duelmaster,
                    Shadowspire

                                      SPY REPORT

"Little 'ol Debby Tonte" came by and watched the fights, leaving me with a
handful of notes. Her handwriting is... an adventure to read. It might be the heat,
or maybe the aftermath of a shattering wind-storm a couple of days ago, or it might
be that she forgot to put an umbrella in her drink.
But she says that the Dragonbane Guild went oh-five. Literate Loons, on the
contrary, went five-oh. It seemed to amuse Debby that the numbers were the same,
just differently arranged. Well, it was Debby, you know what she's like.
It looks like Marco Polo got the biggest individual point gain at 25.
Apparently no one got a biggest point loss, as it isn't mentioned here.
Lurocian Scholars was most avoided, by Dragonbane Guild. Maybe this avoidance
was a mistake?
Pandera Pax got the most challenges.
Other than that... we'll go to the fights for information. Sixty-nine total
fights, with two standbys. There aren't many Basic arenas that can boast that these
days. A total of thirty-nine challenges, two to the Dark Arena, three in bloodfeud,
and the rest "radio," as Debby says.

The Dark Arena fights:
BLECK (81-1670) (0-0-0,0) of ALE HOUSE MERCS DA challenged BLACK ORC (81-20) (0-
0-0,60) of DARK ARENA. BLECK was butchered by BLACK ORC in a 1 minute brutal Dark
Arena duel.
STACY'S MOM (81-1664) (0-1-0,1) of MY TOP RATED DA challenged MOUNTAIN TROLL
(81-18) (0-0-0,40) of DARK ARENA. STACY'S MOM was dealt death by MOUNTAIN TROLL in a
2 minute Dark Arena fight.
     No unexpected survivals here.

A quick run through the random matches (thirty of them, which is WHY we're going to
be quick):
CHANCE DARIUS (81-1676) (0-0-0,0) of THE RED BLADES fought AWORT (81-1677) (0-0-
0,0) of CLAN LONGBEARD. CHANCE DARIUS was murdered by AWORT in a 1 minute gory one-
sided bout. Oops! It can be hard starting out cold, not knowing your strengths and
weaknesses.
EVANGELINE (81-1674) (0-0-0,0) of FUCHI OWNED fought SUPERWEED (81-1675) (0-0-
0,0) of THE MONSANTIS. EVANGELINE bested SUPERWEED in a 2 minute novice's bout.
BLIND TIM (81-1669) (0-0-0,0) of ARCHAIC CHAOS fought SUSAN (81-1665) (0-0-0,0)
of GFE. BLIND TIM defeated SUSAN in a 3 minute gruesome novice's contest. Blind Tim
was lucky in more ways than one, he couldn't *see* the grue. That can make a
difference.
BIG BAD JOHN (81-1661) (0-1-0,1) of MY TOP RATED fought TITAN (81-1672) (0-0-
0,0) of MONSTER MANUAL. BIG BAD JOHN demolished TITAN in a 1 minute one-sided duel.
Is this the benefit of experience?
BUCK DISH (81-1660) (1-0-0,6) of MY TOP RATED fought CHOP DOC (81-1673) (0-0-
0,0) of FUCHI OWNED. BUCK DISH won victory over CHOP DOC in a 2 minute novice's
match. And this, for that matter. This My Top Rated team is hot! Of course, it's
the end of June, everyone is hot.

KINGSLEY AMIS (81-1658) (0-1-0,1) of LITERATE LOONS fought KATHY (81-1666) (0-0-
0,0) of GFE. KINGSLEY AMIS overpowered KATHY in a 1 minute uneven fight. Not,
perhaps, the act of a gentleman, but the arena is not the *place* for a gentleman.
TU DU (81-1652) (1-0-0,6) of THE MONSANTIS fought GORDIO (81-1671) (0-0-0,0) of
WARMASTERS. TU DU won victory over GORDIO in a 2 minute novice's bout. It's hard on
the rookies to be matched against someone with even one fight's experience, but you
have to start somewhere, and "hard" is the way things go in the arena.
GREGORY PALAMAS (81-1641) (1-1-0,7) of DARQUE AGES fought BOREAS (81-1668) (0-0-
0,0) of ARCHAIC CHAOS. GREGORY PALAMAS devastated BOREAS in a 1 minute uneven match.
Hmm, Blind Tom did okay, but the other two new entries to Archaic Chaos (see the
spotlight) are perhaps in trouble here.
LANEL (81-1619) (1-1-0,7) of GFE fought RIELLA (81-1667) (0-0-0,0) of ARCHAIC
CHAOS. LANEL bested RIELLA in a 2 minute novice's fight. Although to lose to
someone with infintely more experience is not necessarily a sign of ineptness.
MICHELLE (81-1622) (1-1-0,4) of GFE fought MEAN JOHN BROWN (81-1648) (1-1-0,21)
of JUNGLELAND. MICHELLE was demolished by MEAN JOHN BROWN in a 1 minute one-sided
conflict. Meanness is often an asset in the arena.

JEX (81-1628) (1-0-0,11) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought PRAISE (81-1662) (0-1-0,1) of
MY TOP RATED. JEX was beaten by PRAISE in an exciting 4 minute bloody beginner's
fight. Now their records match.
     JULIETTE (81-1630) (2-1-0,14) of SUMMERBORN fought GROANER (81-1653) (1-0-0,6)
of BATTLE GRUNTS. JULIETTE bested GROANER in a 5 minute brutal amateur's conflict.
Five minutes? I'm impressed.
TALL FALL (81-1534) (3-5-0,14) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought BECK (81-743) (4-7-
0,19) of ALE HOUSE MERCS. TALL FALL bested BECK in a popular 2 minute fight.
Probably not a good day to be Beck.
     MAXENTIUS (81-1591) (3-2-0,20) of WARMASTERS fought CAZADOR (81-1578) (3-3-0,17)
of DRAGONBANE GUILD. MAXENTIUS savagely defeated CAZADOR in a 2 minute gruesome
bout. What a lot of savagery and violence we have here, do you suppose it's because
this is an arena?
BOUNCY BUNNY (81-1587) (2-3-0,9) of FUZZY BUNNIES fought NIGHT LIES (81-1663)
(0-1-0,1) of MY TOP RATED. BOUNCY BUNNY demolished NIGHT LIES in a 1 minute
mismatched contest. There isn't much that can overlook a bouncing bunny, at least
not much at the inexperienced leve.

PABST (81-823) (5-2-0,29) of ALE HOUSE MERCS fought THE USEROUS MERCHANT (81-10)
(0-0-0,45) of Fine, Imported Standbys. PABST narrowly defeated THE USEROUS MERCHANT
in a monotonous 17 minute brawl. SEVENTEEN minutes? I suppose it helps, or
something, that the Merchant in question is an importer of wines and beers? Or ales.
I get confused on that point, sometimes. I know an ale and a beer aren't quite the
same, but how do they differ?
KNUT SUNDERHELM (81-1569) (4-3-1,28) of DRAGONBANE GUILD fought TRUMAN CAPOTE
(81-1577) (3-3-0,20) of LITERATE LOONS. KNUT SUNDERHELM was demolished by TRUMAN
CAPOTE in a 2 minute mismatched battle. And his helm was sundered, too. Probably in
cold blood.
HARP (81-744) (6-5-0,49) of ALE HOUSE MERCS fought ALP ARSLAN (81-1473) (6-8-
0,28) of DARQUE AGES. HARP handily defeated ALP ARSLAN in a 1 minute mismatched
match. Oh-kay. Seems like I've seen a lot of Ale House Mercs in this section, don't
you guys believe in challenging?
SUICIDE SEED (81-1402) (8-9-2,53) of THE MONSANTIS fought MALLE PENNELIS (81-
1553) (7-11-0,32) of MIDDLE WAY 12. SUICIDE SEED overpowered MALLE PENNELIS in a 1
minute mismatched conflict. Is that anything like mustard seed? Really, serious
question. I didn't know you could grow suicide in a garden. Or why you'd want to,
of course, but it does (so they tell me) take all kinds to make a world.
POLI SARCHIS (81-1550) (9-7-0,34) of MIDDLE WAY 12 fought TOM WOLFE (81-1467)
(7-9-1,45) of LITERATE LOONS. POLI SARCHIS was overpowered by TOM WOLFE in a 2
minute gory one-sided battle. Was it Poli who fought Tom last time, or one of her
teammates?

NIKUS (81-1583) (5-1-1,45) of OF WOLF AND MAN fought KIRLUA NORIS (81-1549) (11-
7-0,41) of MIDDLE WAY 12. NIKUS was subdued by KIRLUA NORIS in a 2 minute conflict.
Experience telling, as it so often does. I've seldom seen such a blabbermouth as
experience.
MR WIGGLES (81-1477) (6-6-1,40) of FUZZY BUNNIES fought LUGG OPAR (81-1548) (7-
11-0,32) of MIDDLE WAY 12. MR WIGGLES was handily defeated by LUGG OPAR in a 1
minute one-sided duel. Mantor! I didn't realize Lugg could do this.
CREIDDY LAD (81-1484) (8-6-2,66) of SUMMERBORN fought WONDERFACE (81-1522) (7-4-
0,55) of LA PENTARCHIE. CREIDDY LAD beat WONDERFACE in a popular 1 minute fray.
Jealous, probably.
ARCHON (81-1390) (15-8-0,57) of OF WOLF AND MAN fought SKINNER (81-232) (6-2-
0,57) of LUROCIAN SCHOLARS. ARCHON outlasted SKINNER in a popular 7 minute duel.
Seven minutes? That hardly deserves the "outlasted" when we have already had one of
sevenTEEN minutes.
LIGDISH BANG (81-983) (12-28-0,64) of PHILANTHROPISTS fought PIZZARRHEA (81-
1348) (15-12-1,63) of OTTO'S DINER. LIGDISH BANG was handily defeated by PIZZARRHEA
in a popular 1 minute one-sided match. Too much onion. Or maybe it was the
mushrooms.

SHILLELAGH TOR (81-1294) (16-17-1,72) of THE RED BLADES fought NYDERAWYN (81-
1046) (16-19-0,88) of PHILANTHROPISTS. SHILLELAGH TOR savagely defeated NYDERAWYN in
a 2 minute veteran's brawl. Veterans indeed! Good footwork out there.
ZOG CORNERSTONE (81-1319) (17-14-0,105) of LA PENTARCHIE fought VACA (81-1210)
(23-18-1,93) of SUMMERBORN. ZOG CORNERSTONE bested VACA in an action packed 3 minute
bloody master's match. And to think, this guy, Zog, almost had a chance at the
title. Maybe next time.
PIT FIEND (81-1344) (15-12-1,104) of MONSTER MANUAL fought ANGEROO (81-1452)
(13-4-0,75) of FURRY FURY. PIT FIEND was subdued by ANGEROO in an action packed 4
minute duel. Many would consider the subduing of a Fiend as a worthy act.
DOPPLEGANGER (81-1382) (13-11-0,105) of MONSTER MANUAL fought KUNG-FU MASTER
(81-13) (0-0-0,70) of Fine, Imported Standbys. DOPPLEGANGER vanquished KUNG-FU
MASTER in a 1 minute one-sided match. Good! We always like to see a Kung-Fu Master
lose. They're such snobs.
MOOSE DROOL (81-563) (15-17-0,91) of ALE HOUSE MERCS fought CICERO (81-1266)
(19-16-0,85) of WARMASTERS. MOOSE DROOL viciously subdued CICERO in an exciting 2
minute bloody master's bout. Though I shudder at the name, I have encountered
beverages (loosely so-called) that might well deserve it. And it's no wonder at all
that Cicero couldn't handle it, who could?

The bloodfeuds:
GROWLER (81-908) (7-6-2,54) of BATTLE GRUNTS bloodfeuded TOTORO (81-1594) (2-2-
1,15) of FUZZY BUNNIES. Down 39. Wanted to be sure of a win, perhaps? GROWLER
devastated TOTORO in a 1 minute one-sided Bloodfeud fight.
SAFFORD (81-1564) (4-1-0,42) of PHILANTHROPISTS bloodfeuded JUNEBUG (81-1543)
(6-2-2,64) of SUMMERBORN. Up 22. A gamble. SAFFORD lost to JUNEBUG in a 2 minute
Bloodfeud brawl.
NARYAK (81-1296) (20-14-1,101) of CLAN LONGBEARD bloodfeuded '66 CORVETTE (81-
1036) (11-6-3,117) of AMERICAN MUSCLE. Up 16. Tricky. NARYAK was handily defeated
by '66 CORVETTE in a 1 minute one-sided Bloodfeud match.

The regular challenges:
DEUCE (81-1642) (0-2-0,2) of CAPITAL CARTEL challenged GWENNOLAY (81-1631) (0-3-
0,3) of OF WOLF AND MAN. Up 1. DEUCE vanquished GWENNOLAY in a 1 minute one-sided
Challenge bout. Gotta start somewhere.
VALAK (81-1650) (0-1-0,1) of OF WOLF AND MAN challenged QUINN (81-1634) (1-2-
0,5) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. Up 4. VALAK subdued QUINN in a 1 minute novice's
Challenge conflict. A pleasant surprise for Valak and Tripwire.
     FIGURE 8 (81-1637) (2-1-0,15) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011 challenged PAVLOV (81-228)
(5-3-0,18) of LUROCIAN SCHOLARS. Up 3. FIGURE 8 overpowered PAVLOV in a 1 minute
brutal one-sided Challenge fray. That's the trouble with using bells in training,
they're so unspecific. They could signal ANYTHING, such as HIT HARDER!

SCREECHER (81-1654) (1-0-0,11) of BATTLE GRUNTS challenged EARTH ELEMENTAL (81-
1592) (2-3-0,9) of MONSTER MANUAL. Down 2. SCREECHER subdued EARTH ELEMENTAL in a
crowd pleasing 3 minute Challenge match. What a noise!
FLAVOR TO GO (81-1633) (1-2-0,11) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011 challenged LIZARD MAN
(81-1544) (1-7-0,10) of MONSTER MANUAL. Down 1. FLAVOR TO GO was vanquished by
LIZARD MAN in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge fight. Lizards like flavors. They
have them on their hotdogs. Chihuahuas, for instance, are good with salsa....
PLAN COLUMBIA (81-1612) (2-1-1,16) of THE MONSANTIS challenged MOLLUSQUOME (81-
1629) (3-0-0,31) of LA PENTARCHIE. Up 15. PLAN COLUMBIA was savagely defeated by
MOLLUSQUOME in a 3 minute Challenge fray. Not a big surprise. This Mollusquome is
clearly a mean dude. Or at least a competent one.
BERNADETTE (81-1618) (2-0-0,16) of GFE challenged MOUNTAIN GOAT (81-1636) (3-0-
1,30) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. Up 14. BERNADETTE savagely defeated MOUNTAIN GOAT in a
2 minute novice's Challenge fight. Somebody lay this rumor to rest, that Bernadette
is planning on a roast cabrito feast tonight?
AUSUBEL (81-270) (4-3-0,15) of LUROCIAN SCHOLARS challenged GM CORN (81-1610)
(2-1-0,8) of THE MONSANTIS. Down 7. AUSUBEL was outlasted by GM CORN in an exciting
8 minute Challenge match. The underdog toughs it out, and tough corn is very tough
indeed.

DAWN CERES (81-1573) (3-3-0,12) of THE RED BLADES challenged REXCE (81-1585) (4-
2-0,24) of CLAN LONGBEARD. Up 12. DAWN CERES overpowered REXCE in a 1 minute uneven
Challenge duel. This just goes to show that dawn is tricky. I try to avoid it,
myself.
VYGOTSKY (81-230) (4-4-0,17) of LUROCIAN SCHOLARS challenged HOWLER (81-1596)
(3-1-0,20) of BATTLE GRUNTS. Up 3. VYGOTSKY vanquished HOWLER in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge bout. Hmm, I hadn't noticed before, but these Battle Grunts are
noisy types, aren't they? There's a school of thought that holds shouting and
screaming during combat to be an aid to victory, though the evidence is ambiguous at
best.
MANX (81-229) (3-5-1,19) of LUROCIAN SCHOLARS challenged SNARLER (81-1643) (2-0-
0,15) of BATTLE GRUNTS. Down 4. MANX overcame SNARLER in a 2 minute bloody
Challenge bout. And right this minute, unconvincing.
     SUBPRIME RIB (81-1567) (4-3-1,17) of OTTO'S DINER challenged '77 GREMLIN (81-
1644) (2-0-0,20) of AMERICAN MUSCLE. Up 3. SUBPRIME RIB vanquished '77 GREMLIN in a
1 minute one-sided Challenge fray. I had one of those last week, and it seriously
vanquished me, too.
JERSEY DEVIL (81-1638) (2-1-1,32) of JUNGLELAND challenged SISI BA-NETERU (81-
1488) (6-7-2,32) of THE RED BLADES. Straight across. JERSEY DEVIL overpowered SISI
BA-NETERU in a 1 minute brutal uneven Challenge match. Well, it's Jersey, what can
you expect?

LIZZIE DUSK (81-1538) (5-4-0,24) of THE RED BLADES challenged ZIGGY PIKE (81-
1487) (4-10-0,27) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. Up 3. LIZZIE DUSK savagely defeated ZIGGY
PIKE in an action packed 2 minute Challenge fight. So, was it just me, or did there
seem to be something *personal* in Lizzie's attitude?
     GAMBLE (81-1635) (2-1-0,27) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011 challenged SPORK (81-1562) (6-
2-0,20) of OTTO'S DINER. Down 7. GAMBLE was defeated by SPORK in an action packed 5
minute Challenge fight. A spork is always a gamble, although not as bad as a foon.
SAXO GRAMMATICUS (81-1590) (4-1-0,31) of DARQUE AGES challenged WALKER PERCY
(81-1474) (6-9-0,38) of LITERATE LOONS. Up 7. SAXO GRAMMATICUS was viciously
subdued by WALKER PERCY in a 2 minute Challenge bout. I guess Saxo is no playing the
requested blue notes.
TURIN (81-1486) (8-6-0,50) of DRAGONBANE GUILD challenged GUTTER BALL (81-1361)
(15-9-0,55) of CAPITAL CARTEL. Up 5. TURIN was luckily beaten by GUTTER BALL in an
action packed 4 minute Challenge fray. But whose luck?
SQUASHAPILLAR (81-1478) (7-8-1,37) of FURRY FURY challenged FIVE (81-1572) (5-2-
1,64) of LA PENTARCHIE. Up some. It's too late to expect math from me. Uh... 27?
SQUASHAPILLAR was overpowered by FIVE in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge duel.
Squashed flat. Well, nearly flat.

JAGER VON DRACHEN (81-1341) (14-14-0,56) of DRAGONBANE GUILD challenged JAKLAK
(81-1430) (10-9-0,59) of CLAN LONGBEARD. Up 3. JAGER VON DRACHEN was unbelievably
bested by JAKLAK in a 3 minute competition. Believe it. The bookies are too annoyed
for it to be a joke.
CHARLES MARTEL (81-1346) (13-12-1,56) of DARQUE AGES challenged PUNT (81-1366)
(10-13-0,62) of CAPITAL CARTEL. Up 6. CHARLES MARTEL was overpowered by PUNT in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge match. Most gladiators don't use that move.
VELVETEEN (81-1431) (7-7-0,43) of FUZZY BUNNIES challenged GLOOM (81-1528) (8-3-
0,56) of FUCHI OWNED. Up 13. VELVETEEN subdued GLOOM in a 2 minute Challenge bout.
They do say that a velveteen rabbit will dispel gloom.
BENEDICT (81-1470) (8-7-0,39) of OF WOLF AND MAN challenged BANK SHOT (81-1471)
(8-5-0,38) of CAPITAL CARTEL. Down 1. BENEDICT viciously subdued BANK SHOT in a
popular 4 minute brutal Challenge brawl. Most people don't get cheered for shooting
at banks, but there's a time and place even for that.
HOOK (81-1576) (3-2-0,38) of CAPITAL CARTEL challenged NO DICE SON (81-1559) (4-
4-1,38) of SUMMERBORN. Straight across. HOOK handily defeated NO DICE SON in a 1
minute mismatched Challenge bout. I dunno, I always found dice to be a useful tool.
BUNNY FOO FOO (81-1476) (8-4-0,61) of FUZZY BUNNIES challenged PORCUPAIN (81-
1453) (8-9-1,85) of FURRY FURY. Up 24. BUNNY FOO FOO bested PORCUPAIN in a 2 minute
Challenge duel. I can hardly stand to look. Bunny Foo Foo? The mind boggles.
MARCO POLO (81-1375) (13-9-1,65) of DARQUE AGES challenged NIN QUAYNE (81-1552)
(10-8-0,82) of MIDDLE WAY 12. Up 17. MARCO POLO easily killed NIN QUAYNE in a 2
minute gory uneven Challenge fight. Who would have thought she had so much gore in
her?
     FLACCUS (81-1455) (8-9-1,66) of WARMASTERS challenged HARRISON (81-1584) (5-1-
0,53) of FUCHI OWNED. Down 13. I think. FLACCUS was demolished by HARRISON in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge brawl. I gotta tell you, neither of these names do
anything for me, and I'm too tired to invent something. Sorry.
PANDERA PAX (81-1406) (10-8-0,66) of ARCHAIC CHAOS challenged MADAM MARIE (81-
1356) (19-8-0,82) of JUNGLELAND. Up 16. PANDERA PAX was unbelievably bested by
MADAM MARIE in a 5 minute Challenge conflict. Pandera, interestingly, was the most
challenged gladiator.
SNACKPACK (81-1466) (9-6-0,75) of FUCHI OWNED challenged FIDGET (81-1403) (13-9-
2,72) of LA PENTARCHIE. Down 3. SNACKPACK was overpowered by FIDGET in an exciting
1 minute one-sided Challenge fight. For "overpowered," read "totally confused and
distracted."

BIG BONES BILLIE (81-1442) (11-7-0,73) of JUNGLELAND challenged VICTOR (81-1369)
(14-11-1,76) of WARMASTERS. Up 3. BIG BONES BILLIE overpowered VICTOR in a 1 minute
uneven Challenge match. It's the bones. Never underestimate the power of a big
bone.
VIRGINIA WOOLF (81-1263) (14-23-1,74) of LITERATE LOONS challenged MADDENED
MEERKAT (81-1134) (14-34-0,87) of FURRY FURY. Up 13. VIRGINIA WOOLF viciously
subdued MADDENED MEERKAT in a 5 minute Challenge fight. A dog-and-cat fight?
'71 MACH ONE (81-952) (15-8-0,72) of AMERICAN MUSCLE challenged HOLY SHIITAKE
(81-1433) (13-5-0,77) of OTTO'S DINER. Up 5. '71 MACH ONE lost to HOLY SHIITAKE in
a 2 minute Challenge duel. Never trust a mushroom.
PATROCLUS (81-1410) (12-5-1,83) of ARCHAIC CHAOS challenged '68 ROAD RUNNER (81-
747) (25-12-0,126) of AMERICAN MUSCLE. Up lots. 43, I think. PATROCLUS was
viciously subdued by '68 ROAD RUNNER in a 9 minute Challenge fight. Anybody
surprised? But it was a bold gamble.
MAGIC RAT (81-1317) (18-14-0,93) of JUNGLELAND challenged KISS MY GRITS (81-
1252) (27-14-0,108) of OTTO'S DINER. Up 15. MAGIC RAT was unbelievably bested by
KISS MY GRITS in a 3 minute Challenge fight. And the Rat won't get a rematch,
because Grits is leaving.

For the title, as advertised:
'69 FAIRLANE COBRA (81-1007) (14-5-1,127) of AMERICAN MUSCLE challenged HEINRIK
(81-1257) (19-21-1,108) of CLAN LONGBEARD. Down 19. Not a bad challenge from the
top. '69 FAIRLANE COBRA demolished HEINRIK in a 1 minute Challenge Title
competition. Well done, Cobra.

                                     PERSONAL ADS

At the risk of sounding petty, could I request that managers sending personals
and duelmaster's columns to hal send them in the form of plain text? That's DOT
txt. Otherwise, the content is buried in a thicket of formatting code that
neither hal nor the printer will recognize and that takes a long time and much
eye strain to weed out. Thanks. -- the Editior

Huh, Harrison? "Wowseroonie Skillarama Sixeriffic and Win-win-winser too!"
Whatever. I checked with my manager, Agent, who put Nancy Drew on the case, and
subsequently came up with the old, old, old Crazy Creepster. We looked him up, and
he said to tell that Hombre "Those were THE days. No matter what Soultaker said,
Creepy always liked old Hombre." He did say it in some unusual jibberish, but Nancy
Drew figured out what he was saying for us. He also said to tell you specifically,
"Uppitidy duppity Yourserinski!" -- Bank Shot

And there you have it! By the way, thanks for stirring up Nancy Drew. She's a
great girl, lots of fun. -- Larkin the appreciative

And to you, Knut Sunderwhatever, you were easy. -- Bank Shot

Vygotsky -- I was afraid to challenge you because of that disease name and all, but I
needn't have worried, should I? -- Hook (Line and sinker, too.)

Subprime rib? No wonder I am sick! -- Deuce

Velveteen -- Couldn't pull a rabbit out of your hat for that one, eh? -- Gutter Ball

There was a bowling ball in it. Must give you a headache.

Jager Von Drachen -- That's a mouthful! And, by the way, how was that kick in the
teeth? -- Punt

     Rude?

Darkathias -- Keep up the good work on that Total Parry. And pikers aren't easy, my
friend. -- Agent, Capital Cartel

You go, LP! Pour it on...! -- Agent

Is that a muscle car on top again? More kudos. A 69 Cobra just ain't a 69 Charger,
but it ain't all bad! -- Agent (falling back on his backwoods talk.)

Well, that was a little better. I can live with it. -- Agent (Calling attention to
his 4-1 and acting as if it were nothing.)

Fidget -- Maybe next time I'll manage to hit you before you fall down! I guess all
those nervous movements waste your energy... -- Patroclus

Wonderface -- Just one skill? You cheapskate! -- Pandera Pax

La Pentarchie -- I guess once I get some fighters up to this level, your guys aren't
that tough to beat. Or maybe we were lucky. Time will tell. -- Kid Arcane

Hombre -- Well, I'm back, I hope you're happy. It's like I was clean for 3 years,
then you show up and are like, "hey, have a taste, it's on me." (sigh) Duel II, why
can't I quit you? -- Pauly
P.S. Hopefully I sent in enough money, for them to actually run my turn.

Elephant -- Sup? -- Pauly

All -- Wow, I actually had a winning record when I left. Although, barely, since I
could be under after this turn. Anyways, glad to be back. -- Pauly

American Muscle -- Wow, congrats. Duelmaster throne, top 3 warriors in the arena, a
5-0-1 turn, and 76 points gained. Can't get much better than that, huh? -- Vanek,
Manager of Warmasters

Petronius -- R. I. P. You looked like nothing more than Dark Arena material from the
beginning, but showed that even those bad RUs can surprise sometimes. I am sorry to
lose you. -- Vanek

Benedict -- I am not such easy pickings anymore. After starting 0-5, I have gone
8-4-1 since. Better luck next time. -- Flaccus

Tripwire -- So it appears that we both suck at trying to challenge each other's
warriors. I think we were both surprised to see each of our challenges fail. I know
I was. -- Vanek

Junebug -- You're one mean bug, aren't you? I was sad to lose Petronius, but what
can I expect from a Parry-Striker with a 13 CN and 7 WL? It was kind of destined to
happen I suppose. Regardless, I intend to avenge his demise. See you on the sands.
-- Vanek

My Top Rated -- Welcome to the arena. We're glad to have you onboard! -- Vanek,
Manager of Warmasters

Manager -- Welcome back. It's good to see someone of your caliber in the sands. --
Elephant

Marksky -- I'm not sure this is your calling. -- Gremlin

Hombre -- Orange sherbet pinto. What more is there really to say? I actually liked
(still do) that album. -- Elephant

Hombre -- I feel O So Sic for not remembering the year of the Celi. Rode a lot of
miles in that car. I'm debating bringing the Thacker Backer Tape Machine to
Shadowspire. What do you think? -- Elephant

Naryak -- I don't know why, but I keep beating people and they get their invites.
Hopefully my turn is soon. -- Road Runner

Lizard Man -- We gremlins love the taste of reptiles. -- Gremlin

Pizzarrhea -- The thing I love about Pizza is even when it's bad, it's good. -- Mach
One

Clan Longbeard -- I guess I'll be seeing you for a few turns in the sand. When I saw
I was fighting someone with a 29 fight advantage, I wasn't sure. I really don't mean
to be such a killer. -- Vette

Arcane -- Glad to see you back at the writing. -- Jorja

Valak -- Welcome to the fray. -- Jorja and the Middle Way, feeling unusually cordial
and hospitable

Ten DA fights last time! Getting picky here, aren't we? With reason, I guess. This
arena reminds me of the Good Old Days, when graduating someone, never mind an
undefeated someone, was a feat. Now, the shrunken arenas back in Alastari churn them
out, and I can't help feeling that a lot of those impressive pre-graduation records
are hollow. -- Jorja
P.S. This is what happens when I read newsletters and do personals at sunrise. I
get to thinking and rambling.

We congratulate Kiss My Grits, Naryak, and Chupucasuperior, and their managers, on
their graduation. -- Jorja and the Middle Way

Doppleganger -- Were there two of you? Was one of them... me? I found that
experience strange and disturbing. -- Nin Quayne

Tom Wolfe -- I suppose it makes sense, in a way, that a golem wolfe would be vicious.
Real wolfes aren't vicious unless provoked or insane (kind of like people), but
golems... you just can't tell about golems. I knew a shaman once who made golem
wolfes. Probably not your maker? He was a sick, twisted man, and we all hope that
he got killed, as he so richly deserved, back during the Rirorni War. Although why
it's called the *Rirorni* War, I don't understand, we weren't the only people
fighting in it, and not all the Rirorni fought, either--our tribe didn't. Which is
probably why it fell on hard times, incurred numerous feuds with other tribes, and
had to send members to the arenas to earn a living. Forced off of most of our
grazing lands, you know. -- Poli Sarchis
P.S. Jorja did warn you about the perils of early morning personals, didn't she?

Saxo Grammaticus -- I knew an Alto Saxo once. Any kin of yours? Your wind is really
good, but too much red in the composition, and not enough blue notes. -- Malle
Pennelis
P.S. I wish Jorja would talk to the Commission about my golem designation. I am NOT
a golem. As if!
P.P.S. I think I might be a half-elf.

Tyger -- Listen! Whoever made that rude comment about tyger skins was NOT ME. --
Lugg Opar
P.S. Who'd want a paper tyger skin, anyway?

Archon -- Correct me if I'm wrong, but doesn't this just wrap up an ohfer turn? Not
that *I* care, exactly, I mean, I would have preferred to win, but at least I
survived. Well, I survived the *fight*, but I don't know what Jorja's going to say
about the ohfer, and the person who gets the fifth loss seems to also get most of
the, um, pointed comments from the boss. And now that I think about it, shouldn't we
have been able to go longer? Maybe it was the late-running party last night.... --
