                                    TEAM SPOTLIGHT

                                    The Acropolis

Ensconced atop a wide knoll, a massive glittering cylinder of stone and glass
rose high into the starry night. After bearing the brutal sun throughout the heat of
the day, the flat, tiled rooftop now offered cool breezes, exotic cuisine, and an
excellent view of the extreme northwest area of Shadowspire. A decorative (though
wickedly barbed) wrought-iron fence was imbedded into the parapet all along the
perimeter. Tables aligned next to the gently curving fence offered the best view the
restaurant had to offer, but the moonlit sky and salt-tinged wind coming off the bay
was available to everyone on the roof of The Acropolis.
Men, wearing loose-fitting satin pantaloons and ornately tooled leather vests,
strained to push short metal carts between the tables. Each cart gleamed of polished
white metal and rich rosewood handles.  Small cast iron wheels swiveled in the front;
tall spoked wheels of cast bronze were at the back of each cart. A small charcoal
fire glared from within a deep stone bowl set into the center of a wooden preparation
area. Once the cart was situated near a table, the men would pull foodstuffs from
assorted shelves and cabinets and begin preparing various dishes. The savory smells
of spiced grilled meat and roasted vegetables swirled amongst the tables in the
gentle winds of the evening.
The rest of the staff circulated quietly and efficiently. Pony-tailed women in
brief togas maneuvered with poise amongst the round tables. They carried trays laden
with bottles of curious shapes, with thick, blockish tumblers, fluted crystal
glasses, and tulip-shaped stemware. Others bore varieties of delicacies, many
foreign or unusual, though many carried more mundane platters of assorted breads and
cheeses. All manner of food and drink were available for the eclectic clientele who
favored The Acropolis. Dozens of muted conversations, the tinkle of glasses, and the
occasional burst of laughter swam in the soft gusts of wind.
A tall, stoop-shouldered man wearing the prerequisite pantaloons and vest
stepped out onto the roof. Unlike the other men on the rooftop, he also wore a wide
crimson sash and a decorative sallet made of silvery metal. A pair of large leather
menus was trapped under his left elbow; he used his right arm to gesture behind him
as he strode imperiously between the tables.
Two men followed, but stayed just out of arm's length from each other and their
guide. The first was a slender, bright-eyed youth in a heavily embroidered kimono.
The flickering candles from the tables they passed woke the gem-studded eyes of
silken dragons as they gleamed and danced in writhing patterns all over his jade-
colored robe. Behind him an older burly man with short-cropped hair and a perpetual
scowl kept pace. This man wore a generous blue linen shirt covered with small
rectangular pockets, each apparently filled with thin steel plates. He wore supple
brown leather pants that ended just below his knees, and thick-soled fisherman's
sandals. To the discerning eye, his manner of moving marked him as something more
than the conventional affluent diner or prosperous merchant. This man moved with the
practiced grace and balance of an elite athlete, but his dark eyes glinted like angry
stars as they roved restlessly amongst the tables.
The stoop-shouldered waiter led the pair to a table near the wrought-iron fence,
though not directly next to it. The dark forests to the west of Shadowspire
blackened the horizon, illuminating the sky more strongly in this direction. Once
they were seated the waiter gave them their menus with a slight flourish and a
brittle smile. The smile warmed up a little as the slender young man reached out and
shook his hand.
"I'll send your server to you immediately!" The waiter was noticeably more
enthusiastic. "Please look over our bill of fare. If you or your... friend requires
anything that is not listed, please don't hesitate to ask. We carry far more than
what you see in the menu, I assure you!" The waiter bowed and left. As he
disappeared the older man tilted his head and shot a narrow frown at his companion.
"I think this guy thinks I'm yer bodyguard."
"HA!" Arcane smiled up into the night sky and tilted back in his chair. "As if
I needed one."
"Yeah." The stocky man swiveled his bristly head on this thick neck and quickly
scanned their area. "Lots of shiny stuff up here. How much did you have to tip this
guy to get us in, Kid?"
"Don't worry about it," sighed the Arcane Kid. He inhaled and exhaled deeply as
he looked up into the night sky. "Every now and then one must indulge oneself."
"Uh huh. You gotta know it's twice as expensive eatin' up here than inside this
joint, right?" Havoc scowled.
"The Acropolis is one of my favorite restaurants," Arcane replied, still staring
up at the stars. "This wonderful view is part of it." The Kid sighed, straightened
up, and smiled mischievously. "It's actually something more like 2.8 times more
expensive than the standard prices, all things considered."
"Now I know why we aren't gettin' any decent recruits," muttered Havoc. "We
ain't got any money for a decent bribe 'cause yer eatin' up our finances."
"Don't be a spoilsport. All the teams in Shadowspire end up here sooner or
later. It's one of the most celebrated restaurants within hundreds of kilometers."
"Huh! They let the likes of Monster Manual and Otto's Diner in here? I knew I
shoulda gone with my byrnie!"
"It's a very cosmopolitan sort of establishment," chuckled Arcane. "You'll
notice that no one else is wearing any form of conspicuous armor or weaponry.
Besides -- gold carries no odor or stigma."
"Still, if I had to sit next to a Spork I'd-" The Kid raised his hand.
     "Ssshhh. Here comes our waitress."
"Well... as long as we're here, let's eat," grumbled Havoc.
"Good evening, gentlemen," smiled a woman sporting a blonde ponytail. "My name
is Amanda. Will we be starting with some wine this evening? We have an extensive
cellar with examples from vineyards all over the world. We also have a wide variety
of ales, beers, and well - pretty much whatever you want! If we don't have it, we
can get it."
"Yeah Amanda, but I'm thirsty now," growled Havoc. The Kid fluttered a hand in
Havoc's direction.
"Never mind my friend." Arcane smiled broadly. "He's always a little grumpy when
he hasn't had anything to eat."
"Grumpy my ass," muttered Havoc with a frown. The Kid and the waitress chose to
ignore him.
"We'll have a bottle of white wine, dry, perhaps something from Dragonhead?"
"Yes sir; we have a few vintages imported from Dragonhead."
"Good. We'll also need a small cask of Kolactan beer to start." Arcane ran his
finger down the menu. "I'd like some fried calamari before the main course."
     "Yes sir," nodded the blonde.
"Ya got any specials?" grimaced Havoc as he eyed the column of prices. "This
place is a little steep."
"Uh..." Amanda was thrown off-stride for a moment. "Certainly sir. We're having
a special on tuna steaks this evening, as a matter of fact. A school of tuna was
harvested this morning."
"Ah, I enjoy fresh fish!" beamed Arcane.
"Gotta eat it or it'll go bad, eh?" nodded Havoc sagely.
The waitress swallowed. "Uh, yes sir."
"Fine, fine. We'll have the tuna," declared Arcane. "What sort of side dishes
do you offer, Amanda?"
"Oh, your chef will give you your options when he arrives, but he can prepare
whatever you wish, right next to your table."
"Excellent!" The Kid wriggled his fingers in the air and suddenly a small gold
coin materialized between his thumb and forefinger. He offered it to the blonde with
a wink. She returned the wink with a giggle as she took the coin, then turned and
sped off.
"I was kinda in the mood for a REAL steak," complained Havoc. "And I like
Justice, not this 'beer' stuff. Sounds weak to me."
"Hhhmmm. Well, you always have boar steaks with that vile ale from Jhelum
whenever you frequent Pandora's Box. This is a different sort of place. And we're
here for a different reason."
"Yeah?" Havoc gave Arcane a suspicious frown. Their waitress returned carrying
a tray with a slender, opaque glass bottle and a small-bowl, long-stemmed wineglass.
A tall pewter mug, its unembellished walls thick and heavy, was also on the tray. A
wide leather strap dug into her ample bosom. After setting out the wine, the
wineglass, and the mug, Amanda shifted the strap off her body and revealed a modest
three-liter cask she had been carrying against the small of her back. The cask had
been tapped with a gold spigot. With practiced deftness and slight dip, Amanda swung
the strap off her body and set the cask into a collapsible stand she had set on the
table. Arcane studied her suspiciously as she maneuvered the cask so that the spigot
reached over the edge of the table. She filled Havoc's mug and set it before him.
"I'll bring some breads and cheeses next," she smiled. "Any special requests?"
"Do that trick with the cask again," said Arcane. Amanda kept smiling and
opened the bottle of wine with a corkscrew she miraculously produced. She filled
half the wineglass while Havoc sipped his beer and rolled it around his mouth for a
few seconds. "Not bad, not bad." He smacked his lips and drained the rest of the
mug, setting it down with a satisfied sigh. "It's cold, too."
"Uh, yes sir." She took a quick deep breath as she surveyed their table. "Is
there anything else I can get you?"
"Thank you, no," replied Arcane. Havoc shook his head and began drinking his
beer. "In fact, you can forget about the bread and cheese. We'll just make do with
the rest of our meal."
"Yes sir!" Amanda smiled warmly as Arcane handed her another small gold coin.
"If you need anything, just light that second candle at your table. One of us will
come by immediately." With a bob of her ponytail she turned and sped away.
"All right Kid, we're here." Havoc paused to take another long gulp. He
smacked his lips again and shook his head. "Maybe I'm turnin' into a wussy," he
muttered to himself. "This beer stuff ain't half bad."
"I must come here too often. She assumed I'd like my wine," mused Arcane as he
sipped from his glass.
"Uh huh." Havoc made a casual inventory of their surroundings. "Did ya drag us
here just to flirt with the girls?"
"Yes yes, I know. I said I'd show you something." Arcane placed his
forefinger on the table and sketched a brief sign. Havoc's eyes shifted as he took a
more moderate sip from his mug. His head did not move to face the direction the Kid
had indicated.
"The bald white dwarf in the high chair?" he whispered as he set his mug down.
Arcane nodded. "Master Darque, of Shadowspire's Darque Ages."
Havoc allowed a ghost of a grin to flitter across his mouth. He took a few token
sips from his mug while facing the Kid squarely, but his eyes slanted and danced as
they studied the figures at a nearby table.
Three short males were industriously gnawing the meat off of a set of ribs.
Apparently, a large deer (or similar animal) had been roasted whole, then partially
dissected and brought out piecemeal to their table. Waitresses moved steadily
between the kitchen and their table, taking back plates filled with broken and
cracked bones and returning with replenished platters of meat.
The smallest of the three sat in a miniature chair that was strapped onto the
'regular' sized chair. His features resembled an impish-like creature; he had no
trace of hair on his face or atop his head, and a smooth - almost polished - stark
white complexion. He seemed to be the most important member of the trio; the other
two deferred to him when new food or drink was brought to the table. They appeared
to have no qualms about spearing food off of each other's plates, however. The
white-faced imp wore an elaborately decorated, voluminous black robe of some
luxurious material. It had forest green trim and enigmatic runes in the same dark
green scattered along the edges of his sleeves and pushed-back hood.
His companions were dwarves, but their musculature and manners marked them as
gladiators - probably ex-gladiator bodyguards. Both were bald, scarred, and heavily
tattooed. Their teeth were a somewhat larger than one would expect, and they put them
to good use. Occasionally they would pause from rending flesh from its bones to
talk. Their speech was barely audible - low-pitched rasps and grunts -- yet they
seemed to make themselves understood. They also enjoyed guzzling copious amounts of
a foaming blue liquid that the waitresses poured from narrow bottles inlaid with
curious designs of silver. The waitresses, Havoc noted with satisfaction, made an
effort not to linger at that table. They were quick to pick up empty plates and
bottles, and quick to disappear. There was little or no eye contact.
"Yeah, I see 'em. What's the skinny on the cupid?"
"Well, it's been a little difficult to gain any significant intel, but..."
Arcane broke off with a smile as Amanda returned with a tray.
"Here you are!" She set out a large, shallow bowl filled with large tentacles,
battered and deep-fried. Next to this she placed a pair of brass cups. "The
calamari is yummy! I've taken the liberty of bringing a couple of our most popular
sauces." Amanda touched one of the cups and beamed cheerfully. "This is a little
spicy. Well, okay - it's very, very spicy!" she giggled. Havoc couldn't help but
notice that whenever Amanda laughed or smiled she made the effort to tilt her head in
order to wave her ponytail. He wasn't sure if he liked that or not.
"Thank you!" Arcane grinned. "This looks great. Would you please ask our chef to
hold off for a few minutes while we enjoy the calamari?"
"Uh, sure..." Amanda looked uncertain for a moment, but she quickly recovered.
"I'll just go let him know."
She darted away from their table and intercepted a nearby cart. The man who had
been struggling to push it towards them stopped and straightened and made an
explosive sigh that caught the attention of nearby patrons. The muscles along his
jaw and back rippled as he grabbed the bar and resolutely began pulling the
cumbersome cart in the opposite direction.
"Someone ain't happy," whispered Havoc with his first real smile of the evening.
"C'est la vie," shrugged Arcane. "We don't need an extra pair of ears around
while we discuss our business."
"What's to discuss?" murmured Havoc. "Darque Ages ain't a serious threat to us.
Whatta they got? A parry-strike in the Challenger Champs? Huh! I ain't impressed."
"You should be. They're in the top ten in both career and recent win/loss
records, and they're one of the first teams to set up shop in Shadowspire."
"Huh! Yer a fan boy now or somethin'?" Havoc smirked. "Ya goin' to give me a
tour of their barracks next?"
Arcane raised his eyebrows and lifted the cup of spicy sauce to his face. He
sniffed and wrinkled his nose.
"You'll note the two bodyguards," he whispered. "Do you know where they came
from?"
"Do ya know I don't care?" retorted Havoc. He drained his mug and refilled it.
"Those two specimens were plucked from the prison of Chimlevtal," Arcane said
through a modest bite of calamari. "Or 'The Pit', as the locals refer to it."
Havoc paused mid-gulp and coughed. He set down his mug and glared briefly
toward Master Darque's table. "Hey! Ain't that against the rules or somethin'?"
Arcane shrugged again. He chewed and swallowed, nodding appreciatively.
"You must try this, Havoc. It's delicious!" Havoc scowled instead. Arcane
dipped a pair of tentacles into the sauce, and then shoved them both into his mouth.
"Ith like thith," he said while chewing. "Tha prison had a -" Arcane paused to
swallow. "An overcrowding issue. Darque somehow managed to manipulate the situation
to his benefit."
"Sounds sneaky and underhanded. Sounds like somethin' YOU would do," Havoc
snorted.
"It certainly gives me a few ideas," nodded Arcane as he sniffed the other cup
of sauce. "I need to develop the proper contacts. If successful, I suspect we might
be getting a more - dedicated - group of recruits in the near future."
"That would be nice," agreed Havoc. He frowned. "But they might cause more
problems than they're worth."
"Every business venture carries some risk," chuckled the Kid. "One must grasp
opportunity by the horns, as they say."
"Ya go for the horns and ya might end up perforated. They teach ya that in
clichi class?"
     Arcane chuckled. "Point taken."
Havoc paused and returned the chuckle. Arcane sighed and stared into the
calamari. "My sources tell me that the Council of Chimlevtal hasn't been entirely
happy with their arrangement with Darque, though they're more than glad to get rid of
the more violent scum residing in their prison."
"Sounds like a win-win situation to me," said Havoc. "What's the problem?"
Arcane pushed the nearly depleted bowl of calamari toward Havoc.
"You finish it; I'm half-stuffed already." Havoc eyed the Kid suspiciously.
"It's tasty! Try the sauce!" Havoc slowly reached out and drew the bowl in front of
him.
"As for Chimlevtal... it's more of a political problem than a rational one."
     "Hhhmm?" Havoc chewed carefully.
"True, supplying Darque with gladiator material lessens crowding and reduces the
number of 'incidents' within their prison. That's a good thing. Still, certain
members of the Council are unhappy with the circumstances."
"Yeah," nodded Havoc as he ran his tongue around his mouth a few times. "Yeah,
this stuff ain't too bad." He grabbed a few more tentacles and thrust them into his
mouth. "Tho wha' they got 'gainst Darque?" Havoc muttered through the calamari.
"I can only offer rumor and speculation," shrugged Arcane as he toyed with his
wine glass. "For one thing, Darque may be as human as I, which is to say, he's not."
"That don't seem to be much of a problem in the fight game, Kid."
"It's not. As I said, it's a problem in the political arena. And that's a
situation WE might be able to exploit."
Havoc swallowed the last of the calamari. He washed it down with the rest of
the beer in his mug. He refilled his mug and glanced surreptitiously at Darque's
table.
"They're leavin'," he growled. "Good riddance, too! I think I've been smellin'
somethin' like sulphur the last minute or so." He shot a glare in Darque's direction
as the trio was escorted toward the exit. "I'm pretty sure it came from that table."
"Hhhmmm. I believe I once heard a rumor... or was it a folktale?" Arcane
pursed his lips in thought, giving his narrow face a comic aspect.
"Never mind, Kid. What's yer point?"
"Well... I understand that some creatures of the night - demons, imps,
nightshades, and the like - give off noxious odors when they become agitated or
angry."
"Yeah? You think that Darque could maybe hear what you were sayin'?" Havoc let
a small smile tug at his lips. "Maybe he's angry?"
"C'est la vie," shrugged Arcane with a chuckle as he beckoned to the waiting
chef and his cart. "Such is life."

Well, it only took me 39 turns but I've made it to where we all aspire to be.
It's funny because a few of my teammates have bragged how fast they got here and I'm
just happy to be here. It's too bad my stay here on top is short lived but
nonetheless I'm here. I'm off to Storm Rock, I think. Not sure how long I'll stay
there because I'm inching to try this tourney thing I've heard others talk about.
Congrats to my teammate Cobra who defeated the Dark Arena and left the throne
vacant for me. I gotta hand it to Elephant and his foresight. I won't be visiting
the DA so I have to win my fight, then Corvette must win hers and she'll be on the
throne. Sounds easy, right? We'll see.
My entry into the codex is "It is far more impressive when others discover your
good qualities without your help." The memento I'm leaving behind is my medium
shield. I won't need it anymore. My favorite weapon is a nice one. Do you want to
know what it is? Come see me in Storm Rock.

Love,
     '68 Road Runner

                                      SPY REPORT

Another two weeks, another steamy day on the sands. Not for me, and I'm glad.
No point denying that, who'd believe me? Still, I can watch, and this is what I see:
American Muscle lost the Top Team slot--all those graduates--to La Pentarchie.
Ale House Mercs moved up to sixth place. Darque Ages moved up to fourth. Battle
Grunts dropped like melons or rocks down to twenty-third, having apparently pulled an
oh-fer. These things happen to the best of us. This is the kind of stirring around
that keeps an arena from stagnating.
Saxo Grammaticus had the biggest point gain at twenty-two. Five had the biggest
drop, that's right, the guy is known in the arena as Five; but he dropped by sixteen.
The outgoing duelmaster got six challenges, which seems to be the most.
Capital Cartel was most avoided, and the team avoiding them the most was
Literate Loons.

We had a "mere" fifty-eight fights today, only one standby taking part. Seven
Dark Arena challenges, four bloodfeuds, and twenty-three regular challenges. A busy
day, which is normal for Shadowspire. That's one of the things I like about this
place.

A quick rundown on the Dark Arena matches:
GLOOM (81-1528) (8-5-0,29) of FUCHI OWNED DA challenged SHEWISH GIANT (81-21)
(0-0-0,55) of DARK ARENA. GLOOM was dealt death by SHEWISH GIANT in a crowd pleasing
3 minute Dark Arena fight. Gotta wonder about this one!
AWORT (81-1677) (1-1-1,7) of CLAN LONGBEARD DA challenged STONE GOLEM (81-26)
(0-0-0,40) of DARK ARENA. AWORT was savagely slain by STONE GOLEM in a 2 minute
brutal Dark Arena melee.
EVANGELINE (81-1674) (2-0-0,11) of FUCHI OWNED DA challenged SPYMASTER (81-22)
(0-0-0,70) of DARK ARENA. EVANGELINE was assassinated by SPYMASTER in a 1 minute
bloody Dark Arena duel.
DA2 (81-1703) (0-0-0,0) of AMERICAN MUSCLE DA challenged DARK CHAMPION (81-24)
(0-0-0,60) of DARK ARENA. DA2 was butchered by DARK CHAMPION in a 1 minute gory Dark
Arena fight.
A BAD JOKE (81-1705) (0-0-0,0) of ARCHAIC CHAOS DA challenged SPYMASTER (81-22)
(0-0-0,70) of DARK ARENA. A BAD JOKE was murdered by SPYMASTER in a 1 minute bloody
Dark Arena competition.
DA1 (81-1702) (0-0-0,0) of AMERICAN MUSCLE DA challenged DARK CHAMPION (81-24)
(0-0-0,60) of DARK ARENA. DA1 was slaughtered by DARK CHAMPION in a 1 minute bloody
Dark Arena fight.
ABIGUN (81-1699) (0-0-0,0) of CLAN LONGBEARD DA challenged BLACK ORC (81-20) (0-
0-0,60) of DARK ARENA. ABIGUN was narrowly killed by BLACK ORC in a crowd pleasing 1
minute Dark Arena brawl.
As you see, nobody made it out alive last night.

The bloodfeuds, or at least three of 'em--the fourth was for the title, and I'll come
to that at the far end of this spy report.
HOLY SHIITAKE (81-1433) (14-6-0,78) of OTTO'S DINER bloodfeuded PATROCLUS (81-
1410) (13-6-2,110) of ARCHAIC CHAOS. Up 32. HOLY SHIITAKE viciously subdued
PATROCLUS in a popular 8 minute Bloodfeud duel. Successful.
CREIDDY LAD (81-1484) (9-7-2,67) of SUMMERBORN bloodfeuded CHARLES MARTEL (81-
1346) (14-13-2,62) of DARQUE AGES. Down 5. CREIDDY LAD vanquished CHARLES MARTEL in
a 1 minute one-sided Bloodfeud fight. Successful.
     CICERO (81-1266) (20-17-0,86) of WARMASTERS bloodfeuded JUNEBUG (81-1543) (7-3-
2,66) of SUMMERBORN. Down 20. CICERO beat JUNEBUG in a popular 3 minute brutal one-
sided Bloodfeud melee. Successful.

Whizzing along, we come to the random matches:
LITTLE DARLING (81-1700) (0-0-0,0) of SUMMERBORN fought SNIVELER (81-1706) (0-0-
0,0) of BATTLE GRUNTS. LITTLE DARLING defeated SNIVELER in a 3 minute brutal
amateur's bout. Good! I can't stand it when someone snivels.
ZADIE SMITH (81-1701) (0-0-0,0) of LITERATE LOONS fought MORDANT DESERTER (81-2)
(0-0-0,5) of Trusty Standbys. ZADIE SMITH overcame MORDANT DESERTER in a 3 minute
amateur's bout. Three minutes? I know we asked Zadie to be careful, because we have
to import our Mordant Deserter, but it isn't necessary to be THAT careful.
LANEL (81-1619) (2-2-0,8) of GFE fought HYPNOTIZE (81-1679) (1-0-0,13) of MY TOP
RATED. LANEL unbelievably bested HYPNOTIZE in a 3 minute brutal amateur's match. I
guess Hypno's secret mind power didn't work. Or maybe Lanel doesn't have a secret
mind? Not that I'm casting nasturtiums, I just don't know.
GORDIO (81-1671) (0-2-0,2) of WARMASTERS fought GREGORY PALAMAS (81-1641) (2-2-
0,8) of DARQUE AGES. GORDIO was viciously subdued by GREGORY PALAMAS in a 2 minute
gory novice's bout. This Palamas dude is not playing games out there.
RIELLA (81-1667) (0-2-0,2) of ARCHAIC CHAOS fought OLD THUMPER (81-1707) (0-0-
0,0) of ALE HOUSE MERCS. RIELLA was overpowered by OLD THUMPER in a crowd pleasing 1
minute mismatched fight. Old thumps, new thumps, they all work.

KATHY (81-1666) (1-1-1,15) of GFE fought SCREECHER (81-1654) (2-1-0,14) of
BATTLE GRUNTS. KATHY was overpowered by SCREECHER in a 1 minute mismatched duel.
Well, who wouldn't be? The breath control on that Screecher is just amazing.
SUSAN (81-1665) (1-1-0,14) of GFE fought DUCK CON FEET (81-1683) (0-0-0,0) of
OTTO'S DINER. SUSAN luckily beat DUCK CON FEET in a popular 3 minute amateur's
contest. I heard a rumor afterward that Susan mentioned "orange sauce," which gave
the Duck cold feet, and he just couldn't focus.
BIG BAD JOHN (81-1661) (1-2-0,8) of MY TOP RATED fought RONIN ZEN (81-1704) (0-
0-0,0) of ARCHAIC CHAOS. BIG BAD JOHN was bested by RONIN ZEN in an exciting 1
minute amateur's fight. Oh, dear. I fear that Big Bad John is going to find himself
a laughing stock in the bars tonight. But don't worry, John, they'll forget. They
always do. Because they're going to be SOOOO drunk.
EARTH ELEMENTAL (81-1592) (3-4-0,19) of MONSTER MANUAL fought KIRIN ICHIBAN (81-
1680) (0-1-0,2) of ALE HOUSE MERCS. EARTH ELEMENTAL devastated KIRIN ICHIBAN in a 2
minute one-sided battle. Ah, so that's what it was. I thought it was an earthquake.
REXCE (81-1585) (5-3-0,22) of CLAN LONGBEARD fought BONY LOUIS SOL (81-1681) (1-
0-0,14) of THE RED BLADES. REXCE handily defeated BONY LOUIS SOL in an exciting 1
minute mismatched contest. "Handily," as in "one-handed." This really was a mis-
match.

MEAN JOHN BROWN (81-1648) (2-1-0,27) of JUNGLELAND fought JULIETTE (81-1630) (4-
1-0,20) of SUMMERBORN. MEAN JOHN BROWN was narrowly defeated by JULIETTE in a 3
minute gory fight. It doesn't look like we're having a good day for Johns here, and
they aren't even on the same team. Probably a fluke, but you never know. Don't name
your next recruit "John."
TRUMAN CAPOTE (81-1577) (5-3-0,46) of LITERATE LOONS fought BECK (81-743) (5-8-
0,27) of ALE HOUSE MERCS. TRUMAN CAPOTE was savagely defeated by BECK in an exciting
6 minute brutal conflict. I thought a capote was fruit in a dish, or else a kind of
cloak. But what do I know, eh? He's tough, whatever else, to last that long.
FIVE (81-1572) (6-3-1,53) of LA PENTARCHIE fought SQUASHAPILLAR (81-1478) (7-10-
1,32) of FURRY FURY. FIVE was savagely defeated by SQUASHAPILLAR in an action packed
1 minute competition. This is Five dropping fast and hard. But then, I never did
see a gladiator go down easily. That isn't in the job description.
ALP ARSLAN (81-1473) (7-9-0,48) of DARQUE AGES fought NIKUS (81-1583) (5-3-1,38)
of OF WOLF AND MAN. ALP ARSLAN overpowered NIKUS in a 2 minute uneven bout. Hmm,
could it be that short names are the handicap? Anybody want to take the time to go
through all the fights and check on that? No, I didn't think so. Me, neither.
MALLE PENNELIS (81-1553) (7-13-0,34) of MIDDLE WAY 12 fought MOUNTAIN GOAT (81-
1636) (4-1-1,25) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. MALLE PENNELIS savagely defeated MOUNTAIN
GOAT in a 2 minute gruesome fight. So... pasta with goat meat? That could be... not
bad. With plenty of tomatoes and garlic.

POLI SARCHIS (81-1550) (10-8-0,46) of MIDDLE WAY 12 fought SUBPRIME RIB (81-
1567) (6-3-1,51) of OTTO'S DINER. POLI SARCHIS slimly lost to SUBPRIME RIB in an
exciting 5 minute gory match. Five minutes? That was one tough rib.
KIRLUA NORIS (81-1549) (12-8-0,44) of MIDDLE WAY 12 fought ZIGGY PIKE (81-1487)
(4-12-0,24) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. KIRLUA NORIS was overpowered by ZIGGY PIKE in a 1
minute uneven competition. A zig, a zag, and a WHAMMO. And Kirlua isn't even a
dragon--I know, because I checked.
LUGG OPAR (81-1548) (8-12-0,37) of MIDDLE WAY 12 fought LIZZIE DUSK (81-1538)
(6-5-0,31) of THE RED BLADES. LUGG OPAR handily defeated LIZZIE DUSK in a 1 minute
mismatched fight. Will this be the start of Lugg's winning streak? Only time will
tell, but... don't bet a lot on it. He's a nice enough guy, but the arena isn't the
place for nice guys.
TOM WOLFE (81-1467) (9-9-1,65) of LITERATE LOONS fought DAWN CERES (81-1573) (5-
3-0,35) of THE RED BLADES. TOM WOLFE subdued DAWN CERES in an action packed 1 minute
conflict. No surprise here. This is what happens when you don't challenge, Dawn.
Mis-matches. Although it doesn't say you were mis-matched, which probably means
something.
GROWLER (81-908) (9-6-2,58) of BATTLE GRUNTS fought BENEDICT (81-1470) (10-7-
0,64) of OF WOLF AND MAN. GROWLER lost to BENEDICT in a 2 minute struggle. Hey, a
mere grunt isn't going to growl as well as a wolf!

And now, the challenges!
MADDENED MEERKAT (81-1134) (14-36-0,80) of FURRY FURY fought JAGER VON DRACHEN
(81-1341) (14-16-0,58) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. Down 22. MADDENED MEERKAT slimly lost
to JAGER VON DRACHEN in a 4 minute veteran's match. A down challenge, and the
Meerkat LOST? Maddened indeed!
VIRGINIA WOOLF (81-1263) (15-24-1,84) of LITERATE LOONS fought ARCHON (81-1390)
(17-8-0,67) of OF WOLF AND MAN. Down 17. VIRGINIA WOOLF was overcome by ARCHON in a
1 minute master's match. And another challenger loses. Is this a trend?
PIT FIEND (81-1344) (15-14-1,81) of MONSTER MANUAL fought JAKLAK (81-1430) (12-
9-0,71) of CLAN LONGBEARD. Down 10. PIT FIEND was unbelievably bested by JAKLAK in
a 7 minute veteran's bout. The stewards are right, I don't believe it. What were
these guys THINKING out there? Even more intriguing, what were they talking about
for seven minutes?
FIDGET (81-1403) (15-9-2,96) of LA PENTARCHIE fought MADAM MARIE (81-1356) (20-
8-0,84) of JUNGLELAND. Down 12. FIDGET savagely defeated MADAM MARIE in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute veteran's match. Sometimes experience isn't enough. A bad style
match, perhaps?

SNARLER (81-1643) (2-2-0,11) of BATTLE GRUNTS challenged FLAVOR TO GO (81-1633)
(1-4-0,7) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. Down 4. SNARLER was demolished by FLAVOR TO GO in
a 1 minute one-sided Challenge struggle. Probably the msg. Sneaky stuff, msg.
VALAK (81-1650) (1-2-0,5) of OF WOLF AND MAN challenged NIGHT LIES (81-1663) (1-
2-0,12) of MY TOP RATED. Up 7. The first up-challenge of the day. VALAK won
victory over NIGHT LIES in an exciting 1 minute amateur's Challenge fight. And Valak
is a winner! Proof, if any were needed, that lies don't pay, at least, not always.
MICHELLE (81-1622) (1-3-0,6) of GFE challenged BUCK DICH (81-1660) (2-1-0,7) of
MY TOP RATED. Up 1. MICHELLE was overcome by BUCK DICH in a 3 minute amateur's
Challenge match. I'm not even going to try to guess what Michelle was thinking when
she stepped out on the sands in that... wisp of chain.

CHOP DOC (81-1673) (1-1-0,13) of FUCHI OWNED challenged GAMBLE (81-1635) (2-3-
0,16) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. Up 3. CHOP DOC was beaten by GAMBLE in a popular 1
minute Challenge bout. Well, Doc knew all along that it was a gamble.
TITAN (81-1672) (0-2-0,2) of MONSTER MANUAL challenged GWENNOLAY (81-1631) (1-4-
0,16) of OF WOLF AND MAN. Up 14. TITAN was savagely defeated by GWENNOLAY in a 2
minute gory Challenge fight. That was nuts, Titan. A flutter of the eyelashes, a
wiggle of the hips, and down you went.
CAZADOR (81-1578) (4-4-0,16) of DRAGONBANE GUILD challenged QUINN (81-1634) (2-
3-0,16) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. Straight across. CAZADOR was viciously subdued by
QUINN in a popular 6 minute brutal Challenge fray. Six minutes? How could this have
taken six minutes, and how could Quinn have won? There are going to be some annoyed
bookies out there tonight.
KNUT SUNDERHELM (81-1569) (4-5-1,18) of DRAGONBANE GUILD challenged PRAISE (81-
1662) (2-1-0,21) of MY TOP RATED. Up 3. KNUT SUNDERHELM slaughtered PRAISE in a 1
minute gory one-sided Challenge bout. Oops. It was probably Praise's helm, just
begging to be sundered.
     MAXENTIUS (81-1591) (5-2-0,32) of WARMASTERS challenged HARRISON (81-1584) (6-2-
0,52) of FUCHI OWNED. Up 20. MAXENTIUS was beaten by HARRISON in a 1 minute
Challenge competition. A bold gamble on Maxie's part, and... sometimes you lose.

SAXO GRAMMATICUS (81-1590) (4-3-0,27) of DARQUE AGES challenged FIGURE 8 (81-
1637) (4-1-0,37) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. Up 10. SAXO GRAMMATICUS slaughtered FIGURE
8 in a 1 minute gruesome one-sided Challenge fray. The second non-Dark Arena death,
if I haven't missed any. Color figure darque blue.
MOLLUSQUOME (81-1629) (4-1-0,24) of LA PENTARCHIE challenged HOWLER (81-1596)
(4-2-0,28) of BATTLE GRUNTS. Up 4. MOLLUSQUOME demolished HOWLER in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge melee. Good job, Moll. That howling was getting on my nerves.
     SPORK (81-1562) (7-3-0,24) of OTTO'S DINER challenged LIZARD MAN (81-1544) (3-7-
0,30) of MONSTER MANUAL. Up 6. SPORK vanquished LIZARD MAN in a 2 minute one-sided
Challenge fight. First time I ever saw a gladiator come out with a fist full of
worms. Where were their uzis, Liz?
PABST (81-823) (7-2-0,46) of ALE HOUSE MERCS challenged TURIN (81-1486) (8-8-
0,54) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. Up 8. PABST luckily beat TURIN in an exciting 4 minute
gory Challenge duel. And here's to luck!
JERSEY DEVIL (81-1638) (3-1-1,43) of JUNGLELAND challenged HARP (81-744) (7-6-
0,44) of ALE HOUSE MERCS. Up 1. JERSEY DEVIL bested HARP in a 1 minute novice vs.
veteran upset Challenge bout. You think the FIGHT was an upset, you should see the
bookies!

SISI BA-NETERU (81-1488) (7-8-2,39) of THE RED BLADES challenged WALKER PERCY
(81-1474) (8-9-0,47) of LITERATE LOONS. Up 8. I think eight. It's getting late and
my eyes are tired. SISI BA-NETERU savagely defeated WALKER PERCY in a 2 minute
Challenge fray. Sisi, however, was NOT tired. Sis boom BAM.
     BERNADETTE (81-1618) (4-0-0,54) of GFE challenged WONDERFACE (81-1522) (8-5-
0,60) of LA PENTARCHIE. Up 6. BERNADETTE overpowered WONDERFACE in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge duel. Hanging onto the undefeated record HERE is a sign of
something, and we salute Bernadette for it.
PANDERA PAX (81-1406) (10-10-0,64) of ARCHAIC CHAOS challenged SNACKPACK (81-
1466) (10-7-0,78) of FUCHI OWNED. Up 14. PANDERA PAX was handily defeated by
SNACKPACK in a 1 minute Challenge competition. Some people just can't handle a good
snack.
'71 MACH ONE (81-952) (15-10-0,63) of AMERICAN MUSCLE challenged FLACCUS (81-
1455) (9-10-1,60) of WARMASTERS. Down 3. '71 MACH ONE overpowered FLACCUS in a 1
minute one-sided Challenge match. Imagine if there'd been mach TWO at work!
BIG BONES BILLIE (81-1442) (12-7-0,88) of JUNGLELAND challenged PORCUPAIN (81-
1453) (9-10-1,88) of FURRY FURY. Straight across. BIG BONES BILLIE was overpowered
by PORCUPAIN in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge bout. That was a very confusing fight
to look at. Flying quills, gigantic bones, flashing blades....

VICTOR (81-1369) (15-12-1,72) of WARMASTERS challenged MAGIC RAT (81-1317) (18-
15-0,97) of JUNGLELAND. Up 25. VICTOR was devastated by MAGIC RAT in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge brawl. That's rats for you, Victor. Always ready to hang onto
the upper hand. With all their teeth.
HEINRIK (81-1257) (19-23-1,84) of CLAN LONGBEARD challenged ANGEROO (81-1452)
(14-5-0,87) of FURRY FURY. Up 3. HEINRIK viciously subdued ANGEROO in a 2 minute
brutal uneven Challenge duel. Let this be a lesson to you all and do NOT take wild
anger onto the sands! The calm fighter is the more likely winner.
ZOG CORNERSTONE (81-1319) (18-15-0,102) of LA PENTARCHIE challenged DOPPLEGANGER
(81-1382) (15-11-0,109) of MONSTER MANUAL. Up 7. ZOG CORNERSTONE overcame
DOPPLEGANGER in a 3 minute veteran's Challenge conflict. Well, sure. You ever get
hit by a cornerstone? Even worse than a cobblestone, and they're no fun.
VACA (81-1210) (24-19-1,104) of SUMMERBORN challenged MARCO POLO (81-1375) (15-
9-2,107) of DARQUE AGES. Up 3. VACA was demolished by MARCO POLO in a 1 minute one-
sided Challenge brawl. Looks like Marco earned that relatively high rank he's got.
Higher now, of course.
'68 ROAD RUNNER (81-747) (27-12-0,144) of AMERICAN MUSCLE challenged SHILLELAGH
TOR (81-1294) (18-17-1,105) of THE RED BLADES. Down 39. '68 ROAD RUNNER demolished
SHILLELAGH TOR in a 5 minute Challenge competition. Correct me if I'm wrong, but
isn't this our Most Challenged Former Duelmaster? Maneuvering to put a teammate on
the throne. Well, that's what teammates do.

For the title, a bloodfeud:
'66 CORVETTE (81-1036) (13-6-3,139) of AMERICAN MUSCLE bloodfeuded HOT BROWN
(81-1678) (1-0-1,18) of OTTO'S DINER. Down 121, and a kill. '66 CORVETTE easily
killed HOT BROWN in a 1 minute uneven Bloodfeud Title melee. I've got an idea there
will be hard words over this.

Hopefully now I can start learning skills in a decent fashion. -- Gwennolay

Trains are elusive these days, just blow on by and hoot. Good work.

Jager Von Drachen -- That was pretty unexpected! You could have taught me more
though, shesh. -- Benedict

Praise -- Nicely done! I was style hunting and got the one I didn't want. -- Valak

Tempting, but I'm gonna pass on that one.

Turin -- Gotta love my willpower! I didn't think you were ever going to stop. I
normally swing back a bit now a days but you didn't give me a chance. -- Archon

Pabst -- Couldn't quite penetrate the steel there. I think if I challenged YOU this
time, I may get it done. -- Nikus

Otto's Diner -- Sorry about Pizzarrhea. You can only reheat pizza so many times
before it becomes unpalatable. -- Patroclus

Night Lies -- Uh, my sandals were untied! Yeah, that's right! Next time I'll get in
at least a step or two before you leap across to where I'm at! -- Riella

Kathy -- What? You skewered a blindfolded Aimed-Blow practitioner for money?? What
do you do on your off time? Steal Girl Scout cookies from handicapped little girls??
-- Kid Arcane

Jaklak -- Again with the TPs challenging me, and ALMOST getting beaten. I need to
take a more proactive approach. In an arena this size we shouldn't keep running into
each other. -- Pandera Pax

Pauly -- Nice little spotlight! What's with the giant, fire-breathing muskrat? Is
that lunch 'to go'? -- Kid Arcane

Recruiting Dept. of the Gladiatorial Commission -- How about some replacements that
have all limbs and senses in working order, hhmmmm?? And maybe smarter than a stump,
and with more heart than a gerbil!! (No offense, Furry Fury.) -- Kid Arcane

Think of it as a challenge to your managerial abilities. -- RUG #476735

Warmasters -- 4-1-0. Not bad. You've been staying clear of us, though. Good
policy. : ^ ) -- Archaic Chaos

Charles Martel -- Not a great matchup for my fella. Seventeen-match advantage.
Can't blame you for that one, but will have to send a guy or two your way regardless.
Best of luck! -- Jugger

All -- No Dice Son wasn't a great loss, and his replacement should be pretty
formidable should she live long enough, but I did like the name. "Everytime I call
my baby, and try to get a date, my boss says, 'No dice, son, you gotta work late'"...
Summertime Blues. -- Jugger

Fidget -- I thought you'd teach me a lot more than that. That was sort of the point
of that challenge. -- Creiddylad

Cicero -- Not much blood in that bloodfeud. -- Junebug

Kirin Ichiban -- Awfully cruel by your manager to name you after such a subpar brew.
Welcome back, however! -- Juliette

Agent -- Of course Nancy Drew had a crush on me. She's a woman. ;) -- Pauly
P.S. Ugh, that's something my dad would say. Scary.

Arcane -- Whoever heard of a talking parrot? That's just silly. Anyway, I gotta go
feed my giant demon muskrat. -- Pauly

Elephant -- Oestreich and Indimar? Nice, it's like ebony and ivory or more
accurately, it would be like Danny Devito and Jackie Gleeson. -- Pauly

Hombre -- So, heard you just had a double critical day. Hope it was a happy one. --
Pauly

Personals that should maybe have been written last time, not that this arena was
lacking in personals....

We congratulate '69 Fairlane Cobra and Moose Drool. -- Jorja and the Middle Way

Suicide Seed -- I didn't need that. You didn't need that. And I wouldn't grow
suicide in MY garden, or mustard either. I'd grow cheese! -- Malle Pennelis

Tom Wolfe -- I don't know, was it me last time? Ah, it WAS me. Liked the flavor,
did you? Well, *I* don't like being chewed on by a long-winded wolfe. -- Poli
Sarchis

Nikus -- Way to GO! About time one of us got a win, and I thought my teammates were
leading the way into another opher. -- Kirlua Noris

Mr Wiggles and Larkin -- Of COURSE I could do that, if by "this" Larkin meant "win a
fight." I'm not an ignorant amos, you know. -- Lugg Opar

Marco Polo -- I hope you run afoul of cannibals in your travels. -- Ghost of Nin
Quayne
P.S. Yeah, I know, it's one of those things that happens. I just wish it hadn't
happened to ME.

Knut Sunderhelm -- Thought you had an easssy win againssst the 2-7 Lizard Man didn't
you. In the wordsss of Jack Nicholssson, "The worm hasss turned... and he'sss
packin' an Uzi." -- Lizard Man

Gives new meaning to the concept of worms producing "well ventilated" soil,
     doesn't it?

Maddened Meerkat -- You are the posterboy for tenacity. I even gave you a chance by
assuming my weakest form... Drew Barrymore. Hang in there my little furry friend. --
Doppleganger

Moose Drool -- Where in the name of Asmodeus did you come from? Looking at your team
number, I woud say you have been gone a long time. Welcome back and next time... I
WILL EAT YOUR SOUL!!! -- Pit Fiend

     Raw, or cooked?

Current personals--

Kid Arcane -- Well, writing before ten a.m. does have it's advantages: it's cooler
and the lightning pigeons aren't as likely to collapse from heat stroke. -- Jorja
P.S. As for the spy report stuff, not a chance doing that so early. It's more
likely to be ten p.m.

Suicide Seed -- Nonsense! I'm the queen of PASTA, not something icky in the night.
-- Malle Pennelis

Our congratulations to '68 Road Runner. Those cars are really moving out of here! --
Jorja and the Middle Way

Flaccus -- Drat, I was hoping I'd started a streak. I guess one win doesn't make a
streak. -- Lugg Opar
P.S. And *N*O*, I do not want you to help me with a losing streak! Who would want
one of those?

Sis Ba-Neteru -- "Narrowly defeated," it says. Does that mean I almost HAD you?
Probably not enough garlic in the sauce. I'll work on that. -- Malle Pennelis

Bernadette -- So, no winning streak for me yet, either. Well, I'll just have to try
harder, I guess. -- Kirlua Noris

This "Fratsfa Slave" is unconvincing. He bleaches his hair, and his dark roots are
showing. Hmm, do you suppose he chews Dark Root before the fights? .... Nah, he
couldn't have done that today, or he'd have resisted better. -- Poli Sarchis

Awort -- Adieu. -- Dawn

Angeroo -- Thank you very much. -- Shillelagh

Bank Shot -- That was well conceived and well executed. Thanks for the skills. --
Lizzie D

Malle -- Nice little brawl. Good luck to you. -- Sisi

Lanel -- Nice win for me. See you around. -- Louis Sol

'68 Road Runner -- Congrats on the bid. BF or DA this turn, I guess? -- Bill the
