Evening Negotiations and Revelations
A burly, short-cropped man strolled through the leatherworkers' marketplace in
the late afternoon. His gait was smooth and quick, despite the weight of his knee-
length, coal-black byrnie, and a sturdy broadsword that swung at his hip. He slowed
occasionally, but never stopped as he passed the merchants, craftsman, and tanners
hawking their wares. His dark eyes danced all around him; he looked at nothing and
saw everything, steadily wending his way through the moderately busy booths.
Just past the leatherworkers' marketplace lay a small oasis of cobblestones.
This section was nestled neatly in an odd juncture between the marketplace, one of
the paved roads that fed into the main street, and a small collection of warehouses
that rented out space to various merchants. A few tall trees and the buildings along
its eastern side shaded the area. It was about 20 meters in diameter --- five
granite benches and a handful of nameless shrines clustered in front of an old marble
fountain. The fountain was set upon a square block of granite that acted as a
stepping-stone. Its basin was fashioned to resemble an antiquated design of drinking
bowl still used in various ceremonies; a pair of thick marble columns supported it.
Tiny cracks and chips throughout hinted at its age. A bronze statuette of a naked,
winged man stood in the marble bowl. His body was lean, yet his muscles were sharply
defined; his wings were spread wide. He brandished a broken lance toward the sky as
he stared blindly into a ragged spew of water that shot up from a small brass jet at
his feet.
The man in chain mail glanced around casually. He stepped lightly upon the
block and stared down into the bowl. With a small sigh, he dug out a small coin from
his belt and tossed it into the fountain. Satisfied, he stepped down and sat at the
end of a nearby bench, taking care to arrange his broadsword so that it could be
drawn swiftly if necessary. Vigilant yet relaxed, he waited.
After about an hour the shadows lengthened even more, and the merchants began to
pack their goods and close their booths. A beam of orange-tinged sunlight angled
directly into the sightless eyes of the bronze winged man in the marble bowl.
A gnarled, gray-haired man limped briskly into the deepening shadows and stopped
in front of the fountain. A pair of small combs kept his shoulder-length hair swept
back and out of his broad face. He wore a sleeveless black leather brigandine over a
faded red tunic. His arms rippled with layers of sinewy muscle. Polished steel
rivet-heads formed an intricate diamond pattern across his chest and back, somewhat
disguising the faint outlines from the rectangular metal plates attached underneath.
A large knife with a wide, thick hilt jutted out from his belt behind a simple pewter
ring that served as a buckle.
Muttering under his breath, the gray-haired man stepped up to the basin and
stared down into it. With a grunt he tossed a pair of small coins into the fountain
at the statuette's feet. Then, gesturing rudely toward the winged fountain god, the
man limped down off the granite block. He moved to another nearby empty bench and
sat down. He looked around, but didn't let his gaze settle on anything or anyone.
He ignored the marketplace merchants as they bustled about their booths.
After a few minutes the stocky warrior in chain mail tossed a coin from where he
sat. It bounced off the chest of the bronze statuette with a dull twang and plopped
into the gurgling water. The gray-haired man frowned as if startled, though he was
not.
"You been waiting long?" he grinned.
"Long enough," replied the man in chain mail.
The gray-haired man glanced around them again to reassure himself. There was no
one nearby. In the marketplace next to them a few lingering merchants were hurriedly
packing, intent on leaving the area before night had settled in.
"Well," sighed the gray-haired man. He shrugged and smiled. "In light of the
circumstances, I presume the Kid couldn't make it this time?"
"Not 'couldn't'," corrected the man in chain mail. "More like 'wouldn't'."
"Yesss..." The gray-haired man's head swiveled quickly back and forth as his
eyes raked over the area. "See here, I don't wish to be rude, friend, but-"
"First, I ain't yer friend," interrupted the other. "Second, my name's Havoc.
I run Archaic Chaos. The Kid THINKS he does." Havoc glared squarely into the gray-
haired man's eyes. "Can we get started now?"
"Oh yes, certainly!" the gray-haired man nodded and chuckled mirthlessly.
"Let's get this over with." He deftly pulled his knife from his belt. With a small
smile and a flourish the gray-haired man unscrewed the pommel off of his knife and
pulled a ribbon of paper from the hollow handle. Havoc remained as still as the
winged fountain god.
"Okay..." The gray-haired man produced a pencil stub with one hand while he
smoothed the paper ribbon across his thigh with the other. His knife lay across his
lap. "Who's the fortunate chap?" he smirked.
"Never mind that," growled Havoc. "We ain't payin' any D.A. bribes this time,
buddy."
The gray-haired man froze; even his eyes seemed glued in place. The brief smile
on his face melted into a thin horizontal line.
"Then, pray tell, what is the purpose of this 'conference'?" The gray-haired
man's voice was even, but soft. His hands and body remained absolutely still.
Havoc slowly drew a felt pouch from his belt while the gray-haired man watched
intently. He gave the pouch a brief shake; the clink of coins was clearly heard.
With a lazy motion Havoc tossed the pouch squarely into the gray-haired man's lap; it
landed atop the knife with another muted metallic rattle.
"We just wanna make sure the replacement is decent," Havoc said. "It ain't
quite the usual amount, but then we ain't askin' for the usual favor."
The gray-haired man slowly collected the pouch and made it disappear underneath
his brigandine. Then he rolled up the ribbon of paper and slipped it back inside the
handle of his knife. Finally, he screwed the pommel back on and resheathed the knife
in his belt.
"I'm a bit taken aback," grinned the gray-haired man. "Has Chaos decided to
abandon its fighters to the gracious charms of the Dark Arena?"
"Chaos don't baby-sit its fighters, pal," growled Havoc. "This guy didn't save
up for a rainy day. Now he's gonna get a little wet."
"He is, more likely, about to become very dead," muttered the gray-haired man
solemnly. He stood awkwardly, then limped back to the fountain and dipped his hands
into its basin. He rubbed his wet hands together, and then turned to face Havoc as
he ran his fingers down through his long hair. "But of course, that's a private
affair between him and your organization."
"Yeah," frowned Havoc. "It is. Just make sure his replacement is smarter; we
like guys who can think ahead."

The sun dipped further and began to slip behind the fringe of the western
forests. Darkening shadows spread and pooled throughout Shadowspire. The
lamplighters scurried to complete their rounds, lighting the giant oil lamps that
swung from carven stone pillars along the city's main streets. Many of the side
roads and alleys were abandoned at this time by most of the citizenry. In some areas
small, flickering lights beckoned the bolder individuals down dark byways with the
promise of various amusements. Some of these amusements were legal, but in any case
a certain modicum of privacy was a given.
Havoc strode smoothly through several crooked, dimly lit streets. Occasionally
he would come across other armed and armored individuals moving cautiously through
the night. They gave each other a wide berth and a silent nod. In a few quiet
intersections, Havoc swaggered into loose clusters of slouching young men gathered
together. They gave him a brief assessment, and then carefully avoided eye contact
as he walked boldly through their midst.
After a couple of kilometers of steady walking a wave of fetid air washed
through the chill evening. Havoc had almost reached the end of a dark, narrow alley.
From the street intersecting the alley, a pair of city oil lamps shone with a bright
promise. Havoc paused to curse, wretch, and spit repeatedly. Pushing ahead, he came
out of the alley. Across the street, about 60 meters away, he faced a tall curb in
front of a wide, brightly painted building. Though unseen, Havoc knew there was an
ancient, albeit popular, stable located to his left. With shallow breaths he made
his way to the building.
A large sign that read "Otto's Diner" was propped up on the roof, facing the
street. Swarms of insects came into view as he drew near. The noxious odors from
the stable began to lessen at the same time, though they were still discernable. A
sign above the doorway read: "Otto's Diner - Home of Shadowspire's Finest Warriors."
To the sides of this sign were several 'pictographically oriented' signs nailed
awkwardly above the doors. One displayed a somewhat childish outline of an elephant.
Another, below this, appeared to be a more life-like approximation of a gerbil. A
third depicted a group of five happy faces, each adorned with a rough outline of a
beard. A broad red "X" had been painted across each picture.
Havoc snickered as he fanned the insects away from his face and entered the
diner. A few insects came in behind him and immediately disintegrated in a flash of
sparkling light. Havoc quickly scanned the large, dimly lit room. A slender arm
gestured from a small booth in the far left corner. Havoc sauntered toward the
booth, aware that at least a dozen pairs of eyes were on him as he approached the
Arcane Kid.
"Took you long enough," complained the Kid as Havoc slipped into the booth. He
sat across the table from Arcane, his back to the wall.
"Don't get yer panties in a knot," muttered Havoc. "It got done okay, and
that's what matters, right?"
The Kid sniffed in disdain and sipped an effervescent emerald liquid from a
tall, narrow glass. The bubbles glittered as they broke the surface. The waitress
drifted purposely toward their table. Her outfit still consisted of old leather
armor, hacked apart and resewn haphazardly to reveal various aspects of her tattooed,
skinny body.
"What'll it be?" She didn't bother to put much effort into her smile. The Kid
ignored her.
"A mug of the house brew," Havoc replied. He placed a coin on the table, but
hesitated for a moment before taking his hand away. "For HUMAN consumption."
The waitress shrugged without comment and deftly snatched the coin off the
table. She left quickly.
"However can you tell the difference between Otto's home-brewed beverages is
beyond me," said the Kid. "They all smell equally vile."
"To each his own," replied Havoc with a tinge of irritation. "I noticed that
the Consortium ain't too popular around here anymore." The Kid smiled enigmatically
into his glass. "I guess they'll be puttin' up a sign for us too, pretty soon."
Arcane looked up briefly with a question in his dazzling eyes, then returned to
musing at his bubbling glass.
The two sat quietly and avoided looking at each other. The sounds and smells of
the diner swept around them. The diner had half a dozen tables in use, plus another
few patrons at the long bar at the end of the room. Their conversations had resumed
shortly after Havoc sat down. They were muted, but apparently the Kid was able to
catch fragments of their discussions. His bright eyes dimmed as he focused on the
gossip around them.
The waitress returned with a pair of mugs on a tray. She placed them both in
front of Havoc.
"This way I save a couple of steps," she explained with a wry grin. Havoc
smiled up at her and placed a smaller coin on the table.
"Thanks, Big Spender." The waitress slipped the coin off the table and ambled
away. The Kid waited until Havoc had drained most of the first mug before speaking.
"So there were no problems?"
"Naw." Havoc wiped froth from his mouth with the back of his hand. "It's all
set."
Arcane nodded absently and sipped from his glass. Havoc suddenly noticed that
the level of green, sparkling liquid never seemed to drop. He shook his head with a
frown and drained his first mug. Pushing it away and taking up the second, he paused
to eye the Kid across the rim. Arcane looked up and met his gaze squarely. Havoc
placed the mug down gently.
"Go ahead and ask," sighed the Kid.
"Well, why are we doin' this?! It don't make much sense, anyways I look at it.
Zen ain't doin' that bad, and we don't need any rookies if we're gettin' ready to
pull up stakes anyhow."
"First of all, Zen isn't doing well, either. After eight fights he's averaged
less than 1.5 skills per fight. I don't like to waste time on slow learners unless
they have a lot more to offer the team besides snippets of odd philosophy. Second, I
simply want to keep a semblance of normalcy for the men. And for Shadowspire too, I
suppose."
"Huh. So we're spendin' coin to get a good replacement, and what if we do?
We'll barely get him entered and on the sands before ---"
"Don't worry about it!" Arcane interrupted. His eyes blazed with an unearthly
light. "You see to the men; I take care of the logistics. That's our agreement."
Havoc grimaced and took a long pull from his mug. "I don't seem to recall
havin' much say in this agreement, Kid."
Arcane shrugged and waved a slender hand in dismissal. "I have too many other
tasks on my mind to worry about your self-esteem."
"Really? You think closin' up shop and leavin' Shadowspire is like, like some
small thing?"
"Well, in the larger scope of my affairs, yes Havoc. It is a very small thing."
Havoc glared unflinchingly into Arcane's eerily bright eyes.
"We've been back on this planet for over two years now, Kid. We've been at
Shadowspire for 'bout a year and a half. You want to throw this away?"
"Havoc, Havoc, Havoc..." Arcane sighed. "There are a multitude of issues
involved with running a ship the size of the Outworlder. I can't possibly explain
them all to you. You'll just have to trust me."
Havoc frowned and took another long pull from his mug. "We're still supervisin'
that little war you got us involved in, right? You're not backin' out of that too,
are you?"
"Oh no, not that." Arcane sighed and glanced up at the smoke-tinged ceiling.
"We have too many resources committed to that enterprise. However, all wars end
eventually...."
"Yeah." Havoc sighed also and looked around the diner. "I'm gonna miss the
crappy service here," he said wistfully.
Arcane allowed a ghost of a smile to flit across his narrow face.
SPY REPORT
Welcome SHADOWSPIRE. I, Olaf Modeen remember this place well. Many the fights
have I fought here. The celebrations, the disappointments... You know what they say
about the herd of lions who studied a judge... DARQUE AGES moved up 13 places, to
5th. Who can explain it? Not you, not me, not LA PENTARCHIE's opponents, after
watching them shoot up the ranks from 19th to 6th. It seems so recently people were
saying OF WOLF AND MAN was washed up, finished. But 5-0-0 moved them up 3. I guess
they're washed no more... What's with WONDERFACE? He actually beat WARMASTERS'
VICTOR, and walked away with 28 more points from the fight. Major screwup at
WARMASTERS. VICTOR lost 28 points to WONDERFACE. Some new strategies, perhaps?
Maybe VICTOR will provide more easy wins... Apparently SHADOWSPIRE isn't filled with
as many gutless wonders as I thought. The Dreaded Duelmaster got 11 challenges this
turn! Another fighter (MARCO POLO 21-13-2) challenged another Duelmaster (JAKLAK
20-11-0). Life goes on. I'm sure SHADOWSPIRE is excited about MARCO POLO, the new
Duelmaster from DARQUE AGES. (remember?) But when you've seen as many as I have...
Wouldn't it be nice to have live subjects to practice on? I hear some team is
looking into the uses of convicted prisoners.
Speaking of cowardly avoiders and unfair challenges... SHADOWSPIRE thinks
OTTO'S DINER and their 170-155-5 is too much! If at first you don't succeed, give
up... In my day, no team with a 168-152-5 would scare me off! What's the problem,
ALE HOUSE MERCS? I hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that
CICERO gets in. He fights people like PORCUPAIN, 13 points below. I thought CICERO
showed great skill and promise when he beat PORCUPAIN. All right, so I slept through
it! Big deal!
A fighter's lot is filled with strife, revenge, and killing. Some fighters
don't accept this. The best do. Sending a warrior to the Dark Arena reminds the
others they'd better shape up. Tough beans, LIZARD MAN. That's what a 6-13-0 gets
you. Someone told NICK NACK that FURRY FURY never Bloodfeuded, that he'd have an
easy kill. Well, I'm sure whoever misled you is right sorry. Here's some advice:
study your opponent, master many skills, fight dirty.
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? The
end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! I don't want to
overstay my welcome...-- Olaf Modeen

Ronin Zen -- So I thought, okay... I'll give him another shot. Then I looked for you
but couldn't find you anywhere near me. -- Kronsteen
Peter Pan -- You know, I never did ask you, was it extra-demoralizing to get beat
down by a war flail? -- Nick Nack
Fidget and Patroclus -- Congrats to you and your managers on getting to the Isle! No
easy feat in this deadly arena. -- Master Darque
Creiddy Lad -- REALLY?!?! The other 4 or so fights we have had were not enough? --
Charles Martel
Ziggy Pike -- I like the way you have turned that record around. However, I was also
the person who sent your manager's previous PS to the grave. And for the briefest
moment, I thought it was going to happen again. Thankfully not! Keep improving and
make our style proud. -- Marco Polo
Washsougal -- I couldn't have asked for a better match up. -- Lady Godiva
Rosa Klebb -- My manager says it is rare for one to lose their first fight and get
more than 1 Recognition Point in the arena--I ended up with 4. -- Julian of Norwich
Drow -- My manager's disappointment in me continues. Thanks! -- Tamerlane
Jaklak and Clan Longbeard -- I made a try at the throne once again. So far, nothing
has gone through in multiple challenge attempts against multiple opponents. Not sure
I can win, but I just want the chance to try for the big seat!! -- Marco Polo

BLOODGAMES at the WINTER FACE-TO-FACE
Back by popular demand, we will be having Bloodgames at the Winter FTF! For those of
you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the
arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several
warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the
Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once
said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die
for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There
will be two different arenas:
DM 96: for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies, and
DM 97: for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds
Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions:
BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting
style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All is 84 points, 3-21, as usual.)
DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat darker
before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and spirited.
The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying warrior. Even
at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur.
REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters.
CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In DM 96, there no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds.
For DM 97, warriors may not change their strategy from round to round (to make it fair
for those who could not attend the F-t-F). There will be no DA challenges.
TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your
rollups and strategies by Wednesday, January 11, else they are due by 9pm on Friday, at
the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular tournament.
MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.
ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.
NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of
Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.
FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than
one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49.
AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of
Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames
T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills.
The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion.
Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th
through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number
of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these
six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if
necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie.
A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills.
The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and
Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn
with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the
Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts.
AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila
Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three surviving
gladiators in each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters Games. Any
special training required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters
combat will be conducted before transfer into A.D. Astute managers will note that
this means a slim, but possible chance that a warrior designed from scratch will
survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places, and go on to glory in A.D.
That warrior could be yours!
The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
