Occasional gusts of wind from the bay pushed through the heat in some of the wider streets nearby, but most of the city baked stoically in a shimmering haze. Typical of the season and time of day, foot traffic was sparse. The merchants, in their quasi-philosophical manner, fanned themselves resignedly. They waited patiently for sundown, and their regular patrons. To the west, the luxuriant forest spread across the horizon in a dark leafy mass, starkly outlined by the searing orange disc. A glittering cylinder of stone and glass rose high above its neighbors in the far northwestern corner of the city. Sheltering his eyes from the slanted sunlight with a thickly calloused hand, Havoc stared up at the distant roof and licked his lips. "I gotta say I'm lookin' forward to some of their 'Special Reserve'!" Havoc grunted. "I'm sure," agreed his companion with just a trace of a smile on his thin, angular face. "I think, however, that you may find something else of interest." Havoc glared suspiciously at Arcane as the two walked steadily toward The Acropolis. He didn't like surprises. Arcane's smile flared brightly for a moment before returning to its usual condescending smirk. "You look like you could use a cold drink, though. Cheer up, Havoc! We're almost there!" Havoc growled in reply. Even in this heat, The Kid didn't have the decency to sweat a drop! The only acknowledgement Arcane gave to the heat was his choice of a knee-length toga of purple silk. Gold threads along the edges of its hem and short sleeves complimented the wide gold sash tied neatly at his narrow waist. He seemed to glide ahead, rather than walk. Next to Havoc's bulk the Kid seemed fragile... Havoc deepened the perpetual scowl that usually darkened his broad face. Arcane, he well knew, was anything BUT fragile. He shook his head resignedly; his grizzled, short-cropped hair caused his damp scalp to gleam in the sunlight. His manner of moving was similar to the Kid's, though he didn't glide along the street. Rather, he seemed to flow over the uneven cobblestones with an effortless grace that marked him as someone unique in his own right. The large, thick blade of a gladiator's dagger, snug in its scabbard in the small of his back, offered a compelling warning to the few determined merchants braving the heat and calling out to the infrequent passerby. Although, honestly, Havoc's frown was more than enough to advise them to offer no more than a cautious glance in his direction. When the pair reached the base of the broad cylinder, they noted that the alcove leading to its double-doors was flanked by a pair of mountainous, orcish-looking hulks clad in scalemail and helm. They carried naked greatswords across their prodigious shoulders with an easy, relaxed manner. The guards seemed to tolerate the heat well; their posture and the darting movements of their beady eyes buried in their fleshy faces showed that they were quite alert, yet well rested. However, the odor they gave off appeared to unsettle the dozen or so would-be patrons anxiously lined up in the shade along the curving wall. A Sharagorn Elf fidgeted within the alcove, directly in front of the thickly banded doors. He was unarmed, yet wore his clan's traditional leather armor (heavily decorated in runes and enigmatic symbols). The elf seemed to be in charge of the pair of muscle heads, but he didn't appear to be happy about that. Havoc allowed himself a glimmer of a smile. "Damn my eyes! Is that Zenny?" asked Havoc in a rasping whisper. "Well, the stipend we pay the team to keep them handy isn't much," chuckled Arcane mirthlessly. The Kid approached the door directly; Havoc dropped back a couple of paces on Arcane's left flank. The customers that were lined up shot the same ugly look of suspicion and distaste as the guards. If they had carried weapons, they might have brandished them warningly as the guards did. Havoc rested his hands on his hips and offered an empty grin. Neither he nor the Arcane Kid seemed afraid of the guards. The elf, however, shuddered at the sight of the pair, and seemed become more pale than usual. "Ah, Ronin Zen! I'm happy we ran into you!" The Kid smiled broadly. He waved to the guards, who flanked the elf at his shoulders and glared menacingly down at the thin, frail manager. "I see you found a pleasant way to pass the time until our return," nodded the Kid. "Uh, yeah. Yes sir." The elf twisted around and waved the guards back. "It's okay; I know these guys." The guards didn't budge. They gripped their greatswords tightly and kept them poised on their right shoulders. They ignored Havoc, who felt like he had been insulted somehow. "I think you will find that we have reservations," said the Kid with a smug look. He somehow produced a small leather pouch and tossed it in a high arc toward the elf. It made a substantial clink when Zen caught it. The sound seemed to mollify the guards. They spread farther apart and continued to glower at the area in general, but somehow not in the Kid's direction. Havoc looked down and shook his head disgustedly. "I find it rather odd that you couldn't fight in our last arena melee," said Arcane. "I hope you weren't feeling ill." The Kid's eyes glowed briefly. "I know there are many fatal diseases about." "Yeah, germs kill people," chuckled Havoc gruffly. Ronin Zen offered a queasy leer in lieu of a sincere smile. "I'm feeling much better, thanks." "You'll be fightin' in next week's fights," growled Havoc with a curt nod. "Certainly. You may rely on me!" "Likewise," snorted Havoc. "We know the way to our table," nodded the Kid brightly. He headed deeper into the alcove. The front door opened by itself. The Sharagorn Elf managed to cause the pouch to disappear. "See you later tonight at the clubhouse," Havoc sneered as he followed Arcane into the tower. Zen dipped his head weakly in acknowledgment. The two were silent as they entered the cool, dim interior. They had been noticed, of course, by the curious staff, but were immediately recognized and were left alone to make their way to the elevator. Once they had stepped out of the elevator and onto the roof, they were ushered to their usual corner table by a tight-lipped, stoop-shouldered waiter wearing satin pantaloons and an ornately tooled leather vest. Unlike the other men on the rooftop, he also wore a wide crimson sash and a decorative sallet of silvery metal. The Arcane Kid and Havoc fell in behind him, easily matching his brisk pace as he strode imperiously between the tables. "I hope this is satisfactory," murmured the waiter with a dry, empty-eyed smile. "You know it is," grinned Havoc as he pushed his chair against the wrought-iron fence that bordered the roof's edge. "Thank you, Felix," sighed Arcane as the waiter smoothly scooted the heavy, thickly upholstered chair under the Kid's narrow butt. "We'll start with our usual first course," Arcane purred as he shifted languorously in his chair. Felix gave a curt nod. Havoc, characteristically, threw himself carelessly into his chair and scanned the area, cataloguing the location and occupants of every table within eyeshot. Felix disappeared like a ghost. The large umbrellas that had been shading the tables rustled with the damp, cool breeze from the bay as it swept across the roof of The Acropolis. The Kid sighed appreciatively and stared into the sun as it began to sink below the distant tree line. Soon, a lissome young woman with short dark hair and vacant eyes arrived at their table and began unloading a broad ivory tray. The Kid resettled himself in his chair and frankly examined the curious glyphs and warrior-figures carved long the tall edges of the rectangular tray. He ran a slender finger along the grooves of a pair of symbols and pursed his thin lips, deep in thought. Havoc snatched the deep silver mug from the tray as the waitress laid out utensils, linen napkins, and a pair of covered dishes. A tall red bottle was placed near the Kid's left hand; a tall crystal glass was next. Havoc waved the girl away as she set down a liter-sized oaken cask. She was momentarily surprised; she picked up her tray, dipped her chin, and scurried away. "Curious," murmured the Kid as he watched her leave. Havoc wasted no time filling his mug to the brim with a brown, foaming liquid. Arcane carefully opened his bottle and poured himself a small draught. The bottle, it turned out, was clear. The liquid within was a deep scarlet. To Havoc it seemed like an uncomfortable reminder of the spurting death wounds sometimes seen in the arena. The Kid didn't drink; he just cupped his glass with his fingers and stared into the bright red glow of it. "Watcha thinkin' about now? 'Bout how you forgot to grease that missy's palm?" asked Havoc, pouring his first refill. "How're ya goin' to stay popular if you keep doin' that?" "Did you notice the tray?" Arcane replied. His eyes never left his glass. "What about it? Ivory of some kind, right? So what?" Havoc drained half his mug and wiped his broad face with his arm. "Ya do this all the time, Kid. C'mon! If you got somethin' to say, just spit it out!" Arcane shrugged, looked up, and offered a small smile to his companion. "I just think it's odd that a tray made of a bison's scapula, a Rirorni Plains bison, would bear the marks of a lord from Osksi." Havoc choked a little on his beer, but managed to drain the rest of his mug and set it on the table with a loud thunk. He sighed deeply and sat back in his chair; his eyes roved amongst the tables. "Just spell it out for me," he growled without looking at the Kid. Arcane shrugged again and returned to staring sightlessly into his glass. "The Rirorni tribes use that bone as the basis for their famous small shields," began the Kid in his usual lecturing tone. Havoc swore softly to himself, but forced himself to pay attention. "The scapula, in conjunction with the thick skin that forms over the shoulder, is used to create a light, near-impenetrable shield. Some gladiators prefer them over the steel versions, you know." "Not many fighters use small shields, Kid," muttered Havoc. "True, still... well, it's not pertinent. What is something to note is that that bone, so highly prized by the plains tribes for their legendary shields, was carved into a large serving tray instead." "What's the big deal? Somebody bought it or killed their own bull, right?" Havoc poured himself another mug. "Not likely," mused Arcane. "Those beasts are enormous, nasty, and difficult to deal with effectively." "You mean: without getting killed!" chuckled Havoc. Arcane nodded. "Also, the local tribes guard them aggressively, and they're nomadic. They migrate with the herds, so they're never too far away." "So somebody bought it or traded for it," Havoc waved a hand dismissively. "The carvings were Old Osksi," mused the Kid. "It's considered a quasi-dead language." "Dead?" Havoc asked. Arcane nodded. "Only those of ancient nobility, from some of the oldest houses, bother learning it any more. Well, they and their priests, I should say. It's a requirement for the usual Q & A rituals that make up certain aspects of their religion." "So it ain't really dead then, is it?" "Well, nobody outside of Osksi's oldest aristocracy bother to use it," Arcane admitted. "Think of it as a code, or password of sorts. If you speak it to someone who claims to be of noble lineage, yet they can't understand or answer you coherently..." The Kid drew his forefinger across his throat. "So what?" grunted Havoc. "You miss the point. That language and those runes aren't common, not even in Osksi. One generally only sees them carved into some of the older temples, or perhaps on some ancient warrior statuette along the Warrior's Way." "Only in Osksi?" asked Havoc. "Only and rarely," sighed Arcane. "Yet somehow that antiquated, closely-guarded language was carved on a thick bone of a beast found far, far away - and likewise guarded." The Kid shook his head and snorted. "Well. Something to think about." He uncovered one dish sniffed its contents appreciatively. "Fresh sushi rolls! Gods, I love The Acropolis! " "Whatever," sniffed Havoc with disgust. "I guess ya aren't goin' to tell me what those runes said, huh? And don't be tellin' me that you couldn't understand 'em, 'cause we both know ya can!" "Our pressing business comes first, Havoc. We have to gather up our fighters, then prepare for a brief reunion, a few rounds in the arena, and then a fond farewell." "Ya sure we can't stay around a little longer?" asked Havoc wistfully. "This place ain't bad, and we ain't done too bad here either, all things considered." "No, no, we have a little business to conduct and then we must be moving on. Perhaps later we'll return in another season or two, but we can't be two places at once, and we're needed elsewhere." Havoc frowned at the Kid as he delicately sampled the sushi. "What if the fighters don't get a chance to challenge right? Ya know, lots of these punks seem like pushovers. We just need to pick and choose our match-ups." Arcane waved a careless hand in Havoc's direction. "We're just putting in a brief appearance; don't worry about it." "Yeah, whatever..." mumbled Havoc to himself as he poured himself another mug. "But who'll get the blame when the fans start jeerin' from the cheap seats?" DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Hello, Shadowspire! It's me, your favorite not-ready-for-prime-time duelmaster. I'm afraid this is hello and goodbye for me, as I have gotten the call to the Isle. That makes me the sixth graduate from Otto's Diner and the fifth different style. That's halfway to the round robin if you're scoring at home (or if you're alone). Darque, LP, you'd better get moving or Otto's going to catch you! Well, I'll make this short. I'm off to the Dark Arena because Otto wondered if I could kill a monster with my so-called "little" damge, and also because he thinks it'd be funny if our team had more Dark Arena kills than player kills. He's a strange one, that guy. So long, Shadowspire! It's been fun battling with all of you and I look forward to seeing some of you on the Isle soon. Subprime Rib SPY REPORT Hail SHADOWSPIRE! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for your deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as WARMASTERS is pushed out of top team by LA PENTARCHIE, who came from 2nd with a 2-2-0 this turn. Now keep the taverns open late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for OTTO'S DINER, whose 0-5-0 this turn dropped them by 9 into 12th. SAVAGE HORDE stable has parlayed this turn's 3-2-0 into a 5 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 10th place. Good work, guys! The FURRY FURY guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, CAT N TONIC fought ASTYANAX and gained 20 points and contributed to FURRY FURY's 3-1-0. ASTYANAX has lost to CAT N TONIC, falling 15 points, while helping make ARCHAIC CHAOS a 3-1-0 turn. This turn SUBPRIME RIB Dark Arena Challenged DARK CHAMPION in what was SHADOWSPIRE's Title bout. The crowds were amazed this turn, as DARK CHAMPION killed the Duelmaster, SUBPRIME RIB, leaving OTTO'S DINER in mourning. This incredible death has allowed, I might add, GIGI DIVINE from CULT OF BACCHUS to ascend to the throne of Duelmaster, and I hear DARK ARENA is not happy. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their losing fighters do dishes at The Dripping Blade until they win. Maybe? I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher friend of mine assures me this is true. MONSTER MANUAL has cause to stand tall, as they were SHADOWSPIRE's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And avoiding MONSTER MANUAL more than any other team we find CULT OF BACCHUS. SHADOWSPIRE, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans, take notice that GIGI DIVINE from CULT OF BACCHUS was SHADOWSPIRE's most challenged warrior this turn. In a brave attempt, EBORIUS from WARMASTERS challenged up 24 points to fight ODDJOB from the BOND-AGE stable. EBORIUS perhaps got his just desserts, seeing as he was beat by ODDJOB and ended up with 73 recognition points. The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. SUMMERBORN made what looks to be a tough decision this turn, as they sent JUNEBUG, with a record of 18-17-4, to JUNEBUG death. Farewell, hers. The Dripping Blade declares a free round for BALTAIRE and all of CULT OF BACCHUS, for having revenged WARMASTERS' GLABRIO for killing one of their comrades. Congratulations go out to SUMMERBORN, with JULIETTE revenging a bloodfeud against AGORIX of WARMASTERS. We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare to fight bravely. Always good to rest in SHADOWSPIRE, but never good to wear out my welcome. Look for me in future turns.
