The dampness of the night had not yet dissipated. There were still a few drops
of dew in the grass, glinting in the light as the sun crawled over the horizon and
began climbing between the rooftops and towers cluttering Shadowspire's skyline.
The men in the pit grunted through their exercises. Their feet were buried in
soft sand; their faces, under tarnished and heavily battered helms, dripped with
sweat. Each warrior carried a large shield, holding it as a weapon with both hands.
They swung them up or down, or lunged or pivoted, every time Havoc signaled and blew
his shiny whistle. Their shuffling steps in the deep sand underscored the weight of
the notched and dented shields.
The gladiators wore dark leather gambesons, thoroughly soaked with their
perspiration. These weren't the quilted jerkins generally worn under heavy armor to
cut down on chafing, or to soften the heavy, blunt blows of combat. These dense
woolen coats were meant to be used as an armor unto themselves. They were thickly
padded and high-collared, with small steel plates sewn into pockets across the chest
and back. However, the insulation they provided made them hot and bulky, and
hampered the men's agility even more than the sand. All in all, it made the men very
uncomfortable as they scraped their feet back and forth through the soft grit and
swung their large heavy shields in wide arcs through the damp air.
Havoc, at least, seemed pleased with the difficulty of the exercises. He blew
a whistle at regular intervals, simultaneously signaling overhead with a small green
flag. The men grunted and swore softly as they maneuvered in unison.
Finally, Havoc blew a long note on his whistle and dropped the flag down smartly
against his thigh. The men dropped the bottom edge of their shields into the sand
and leaned against them for support, panting and trembling with fatigue. Blue Nova
had let go of his shield; he swayed unsteadily for a moment before flopping down on
his back next to it. Havoc grimaced and shook his head as he stepped down from the
raised platform where he had been supervising the morning activities.
"All right, don't get too comfortable, ladies. We train until noon, and the
day's just barely getting' started!"
"Oh c'mon!" Blue Nova wailed from flat on his back. He gestured, something like
a spasm, in the general direction of the brightening sky. "We've been out here since
before sunrise!"
"Y-Yeah," panted Comet Boy. He pitched suddenly to his knees; his shield spun
slowly and fell next to him. "I can't lift this thing again, I swear on my mother's
grave!"
Havoc glared into all the men's faces, one at a time. He closed his eyes
briefly and nodded to himself. When he opened his eyes he was staring straight at
Blue Nova.
"Right. Tired of the sand pit, ladies? Okay. Not a problem. Let's go for a
little stroll instead." Havoc pointed to the southern part of the training yard.
"Can you sissies see those poles?" The men, as one, raised a piteous groan. The
newest recruit gathered a handful of sand and flung it into the air, showering Blue
Nova's upturned, perspiring face. Nova flung himself onto his side, retching and
gasping for air.
"Thaaaatttsss right, ladies. Time to go for a walk." The men cursed softly as
they struggled to their feet. Blue Nova was wheezing into the sand, but he had
stopped coughing.
"Since Blue Nova is SO tired, HE gets to ride in the chair - all the way,
right?" Havoc tilted his head and allowed a sliver of a sinister smile to flit
across his broad face. "I'll just wait here 'till ya get back. You girls don't
mind, do ya?"
Blue Nova collapsed on the sand as someone, Havoc couldn't exactly be sure whom,
but SOMEONE seemed to have kicked B.N. down as he struggled to stand in the pit.
Havoc didn't bother looking too closely, nor did he seem either concerned or
surprised.
"Hurry up, my little darlin's," Havoc clapped his hands together vigorously.
"It's a long way down to the pier and back. Ya don't wanna miss lunch, do ya?"
The men staggered out of the pit and made their way to the poles. Blue Nova
straggled behind the others.
The poles were four meters long and as thick in diameter as a man's forearm. A
large, oaken chair sat to the side of the poles. It had a tall back, with wide
armrests and thick leather pillows at the seat and back. A small steel loop had been
attached to each reinforced leg. The gladiators pushed a pole through each pair of
loops along both sides of the chair.
A small moment of electric tension flickered as the men watched Blue Nova slowly
make his way to the chair. He looked liked he wanted to puke, but instead he set
himself gingerly into the chair and placed his feet on the footrests. The men
glowered as they bent to grab the poles; Havoc resisted the urge to chuckle aloud.
"All right ladies: one, two, THREE!"
The tired warriors yanked the chair aloft, tilting it crazily in all directions
until each gladiator finally rested a pole across his shoulder.
"Okay, you know the route. Down to the harbor, out along the third pier and all
the way to the sail shop, right? I know those guys; if you don't hustle your asses
all the way to their shop and THEN turn around, I'll know about it! All right -
MOVE!!"
The men groaned, grumbled, or grimaced as they began to carry their heavy load
out of the training yard. Blue Nova looked a little scared and sick, Havoc decided.
Well, he should. There was a good chance he'd come back with a few extra bumps and
bruises... Havoc nodded to himself and finally allowed himself the luxury of
chuckling out loud.
It felt good, at first. It had been a good while since Havoc had had a reason
to let loose with a little laugh. But then... the shrill whine of a banshee in pain
interrupted Havoc's first good mood in days. A purplish-blue light appeared,
swirling and glinting before finally widening and disappearing. A slender, dark-
haired youth in a gleaming hauberk stood in its place. Instead of a sword, a
polished, long-handled war hammer dangled from the youth's belt. Havoc felt his jaw
clench up as a wave of pain rolled down from his neck to the small of his back.
"Kid, what are ya doin' here? Got nothin' better to do than spy on me?"
The Arcane Kid dismissed the idea with a brief frown and a flutter of his right
hand as he idly regarded the training yard.
"Just passing by. I thought I'd see how you were doing." Arcane shrugged and
made a sly smile. "My copy of the Gladiatorial News was a little late." Arcane
chuckled silently to himself as he watched the backs of the gladiators disappear
around the corner of a warehouse across the road from the training yard. The chair
had been wobbling noticeably from side to side.
"I noticed that the team is pretty much dead last in the standings."
Havoc swore a terrible oath regarding the Gladiatorial Commission, their
ancestry, and involving a host of vile diseases. When he finished, Havoc spit at the
ground between the Kid and himself and made a rude gesture in Arcane's general
direction. Grumbling, he turned and began marching toward the barracks.
"Yes," sighed the Kid with a knowing nod. "I've often felt the same way
myself."
Havoc ignored him. He continued pacing towards the barracks without slowing or
acknowledging the Kid's presence. Arcane smirked and shrugged again. Turning
towards the sand pit, he pulled the war hammer from his belt and made a few practice
swings, attacking and pivoting like a sparkling shadow. The sun had just cleared the
lower rooftops of Shadowspire. The glossy surfaces of the war hammer glittered
wickedly in the bright morning sun.
The slamming of the barracks door caught Arcane's attention. He slipped the war
hammer back into his belt, crossed his arms, and studied the skyline for a few
minutes. Then, nodding to himself with a deep sigh, he turned and glided smoothly
across the rough path that led up toward the barracks.
The Kid didn't bother to knock; he simply opened the door and stepped into the
main hall.
"Yer pretty bold, aren't ya?" Havoc growled from a chair by the window. He
stared out into the yard, refusing to turn toward the door.
"A landlord's prerogative," smiled Arcane. He closed the door softly behind him
and moved to a massive, high-backed chair against the opposite wall. It faced into a
different part of the room. The Kid repositioned the chair so that it faced Havoc
and the window. It didn't take the Kid much effort to move the chair, though it
looked quite heavy.
"How long do you intend to brood?" Arcane asked as he slipped down into the
pillowed depths of the chair.
"What's it to ya?" grumbled Havoc. "It's the sweet life, ain't it? Ya got
yerself in a nice spot. Just sit back and watch everything fall apart."
"It's not that way at all," Arcane smirked. "I still bet on the team, you know.
I'm losing a lot of cash."
Havoc grunted and swung away from the window. He tilted his head in the Kid's
direction and shot him a knowing glare.
"Ya'll just make more, Kid. Money's no big deal to you."
"True enough," smiled Arcane. He pressed his fingertips together and pushed
them up into a slender arch. "Come, Havoc," murmured Arcane as he peered over his
manicured nails. "Let's put aside this silly feud. There are too many issues to
deal with, too many other problems. Must we waste so much effort on infighting?"
Havoc looked up into the high rafters and clenched his teeth. "Ya mean the
blood feud, right?" Arcane nodded. "Well, what about it?"
"I realize we don't have anyone who can deal with it effectively at this
juncture, but don't let it bother you. These things happen."
Havoc slapped his palms against the armrests and closed his eyes for a few
moments. When he opened them again he stared directly into the softly-glowing orbs
of the Arcane Kid.
"So - ya wanna manage the team again, or what?"
The Kid tipped his head. "It would be a privilege, of course. But you'll still
be the trainer, yes?"
Havoc closed his eyes again and leaned back into the chair. His hands clenched
the armrests. He sighed deeply and nodded, then he opened his eyes again and offered
a flicker of a grin.
"Welcome back, Kid. It sucks to be you, ya know."
Arcane chuckled and clapped his hands a few times.
"We shall see what we shall see," The Kid replied. "How did you like that new
recruit the Commission sent over?"
Havoc began cursing the Gladiatorial Commission all over again.
"Okay, okay," laughed Arcane. "I get the gist!!"

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

     Good Morning Shadowspire! <Giggle>
Another beautiful day here in the throne room. The doors and windows are open
and there is a nice breeze coming across as I sip on some red sangria. The flowers
are blooming in the garden and their scent is totally filling the room with their
aroma. I just might set up permanent residence here! <Giggle>
Rosa Kleb, what can I say? I'm sorry for breaking all your scimitars! <Giggle>
It was a fun fight, you should really slow down some though, and take your back up
weapon out earlier! The way you were trying to punch me through my plate armor, you
are a feisty little hellcat! <Giggle>
So, I'm a bit confused about Dr Grimm. He says he is staying and he sponsors my
last fight, then he says he's retiring? Now he is fighting his warriors again?
Maybe this battle with Vanek is more than he can handle? Maybe, Glabrio killing
Honey Bee has sparked a new desire in him? Who knows? Anyone?
Okay, this week I have a new sponsor, Le Pentarque's french pastries and fine
chocolates! Personally I think he has a crush on me! <Giggle> I've been finding
boxes of chocolates at the throne room's door the last 2 turns! So, I shall adorn a
gold LP on my medium shield this turn for his sponsorship!
I need to work on my tan before the next fight so, ta ta for now!

                                      SPY REPORT

Debby Tonte did the notes, and you know she has trouble organizing her
information. But let's see what I can pull out of it. She says, "Shadowspire needs
a spyre port." That was a hiccup there at the end, but it seems appropriate.
She notes that The Willburys II went oh-fer. It happens. Warmasters moved UP
from 11th to 16th? I think she's got too much drink and not enough fruit. Cult of
Bacchus went 5-0. Good going. Little Darling had the biggest point increase at 20.
Julian of Norwich had the biggest drop at 13. Dragonbane Guild was most avoided, by
Clan Longbeard. Somehow those two teams sound like they should be working together,
but there it is. Regal got the most challenges.
And as a final note to us, she reminds us that blood on a purple robe may stain.
I knew this. So did you.

Forty-seven fights, five of them in the Dark Arena, three bloodfeuds, eighteen
regular challenges, and four standbys. I'm going to sort of fly through this spy
report, because I'm trying to build up some brownie points with the Hands, for NEXT
time. You should've heard the cussing when THAT order went down!

The Dark Arena:
RATHELM (81-1893) (1-3-0,6) of SAVAGE HORDE DA challenged STONE GOLEM (81-26)

a 1 minute Dark Arena duel.
TOM BADGERLOCK (81-1903) (0-2-0,2) of FARSEERS DA challenged HIGH ELF (81-19)

gory Dark Arena fight.

The random matches:

(0-0-0,0) of MONSTER MANUAL. MINT JULIP lost to EYE OF THE DEEP in a 2 minute
gruesome novice's bout. That's the way it is when you begin, someone has to lose so
someone else can win.
HOLY MOLET (81-1779) (2-2-0,18) of RAIN DOGS fought ROADKILL SURPRISE (81-1920)
(0-0-0,0) of FURRY FURY. HOLY MOLET was overpowered by ROADKILL SURPRISE in a 1
minute one-sided battle. An upset victory here.
HITTIUS (81-1880) (1-3-0,6) of CULT OF BACCHUS fought CROOKED TAIL (81-1921) (0-
0-0,0) of FURRY FURY. HITTIUS handily defeated CROOKED TAIL in a 1 minute one-sided
match. No surprise.
SCIPIO (81-1900) (2-1-0,17) of WARMASTERS fought EMBEZZLING SCRIBE (81-5) (0-0-
0,20) of Miscellaneous Odds and Bods. SCIPIO executed EMBEZZLING SCRIBE in a 1

of BRIDGE BURNERS. BLUE NOVA handily defeated MAYBE in a 1 minute mismatched fight.
Nothing like experience.
GRAVITY VORTEX (81-1895) (0-3-0,3) of SEARCH THE SKY fought KENAI (81-1901) (2-
0-0,11) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. GRAVITY VORTEX was vanquished by KENAI in a unpopular 4
minute one-sided struggle. I sense a trend forming in GV's career here.

AL ZHEIMER (81-1886) (3-1-0,18) of LA PENTARCHIE fought COMET BOY (81-1899) (2-
1-0,7) of SEARCH THE SKY. AL ZHEIMER overpowered COMET BOY in a 1 minute uneven
battle. This makes, what, the fourth loss for Search the Sky? A bad day.
CAEDMON (81-1873) (4-3-0,17) of DARQUE AGES fought CABICHON (81-1914) (1-0-0,11)
of LA PENTARCHIE. CAEDMON handily defeated CABICHON in a 1 minute one-sided duel.
The price of rising too quickly.

(1-0-0,11) of OTTO'S DINER. PICKER overpowered THE CRISCO KID in a 3 minute one-
sided competition. Really cuts the grease, huh?
     KAMAL KHAN (81-1883) (3-2-0,24) of BOND-AGE fought SYFTAR TRAFF (81-1876) (3-3-
0,20) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. KAMAL KHAN beat SYFTAR TRAFF in an action packed 1 minute
bout. At least we're past the beginners and into real fights here.
THE DRONE (81-1862) (6-3-1,40) of LA PENTARCHIE fought FRATSFA SLAVE (81-7) (0-
0-0,36) of Miscellaneous Odds and Bods. THE DRONE handily defeated FRATSFA SLAVE in
a 1 minute uneven match. Everyone does. It's what Fratsfa Slaves are for.

REDDIG (81-1838) (11-3-0,53) of CLAN LONGBEARD fought VERITY (81-1907) (2-0-
0,25) of FARSEERS. REDDIG overpowered VERITY in a 1 minute one-sided match. Does
this mean that truth does not win out in the end, or is it just the gross mismatch
here?
IRWEHN (81-1785) (11-11-0,48) of CLAN LONGBEARD fought ORTING (81-1815) (7-7-
0,30) of THE WILLBURYS II. IRWEHN demolished ORTING in an exciting 1 minute gruesome
mismatched match. I tried spelling both these names backward, but it didn't help.
HARE BINGER (81-1790) (11-9-1,55) of FURRY FURY fought TRUTTS (81-1889) (7-5-
0,54) of BRIDGE BURNERS. HARE BINGER bested TRUTTS in a popular 2 minute bloody
duel. Ah, hares are tricky. Not like rabbits.

Jaklak -- I assume your ad refers to my challenge to you on turn 145, since I haven't
gotten any other challenges through since then. I find it odd that the censors would
edit out the word "studmuffin", but who can say what they'll find offensive these
days. Thanks for the compliment on my incredible bravery. It means a lot to have
the respect of one's elders. -- Gremlin Stew

Don't know who editted out "studmuffin," but it wasn't me.

Kronsteen -- Oooh, you were almost there that time. So close. One more try? --

Rathelm -- That was a rather enjoyable contest for me. Thanks for your efforts. --
Regal

Comet Boy -- I am glad to hear they treated you so well in the infirmary. -- Verity

Gravity Vortex -- Maybe we should try again in a few weeks? -- Mishap

The Crisco Kid -- At least I learned a few things from you. -- Tom Badgerlock

Cabichon -- Ouch, what a disappointing event for me. Nothing gained at all. -- Galen

De Gotti -- Thank you for your warm welcom to Shadowspire. -- The Catalyst

Otto X -- Wouldn't the Dark Arena be safer than your coffee and dessert? -- Farseers

All -- Is low HP on a slasher a problem if they do not seem to get the jump? -- The
Catalyst

All -- When do you decide to send a warrior to the Dark Arena? -- The Catalyst

Vanek -- Sorry for my causing the death of Justinius. He was a gifted opponent and
it is a tragic loss. -- Longfangs

Regal -- You are a skilled gladiator with a promising future. The same can not be
said about Rathelm. -- Hawk

Cicada Song -- Good fight. After that beating I think I need a new strat. --
Skullcleaver

Syftar Traff -- You weren't what I expected. Thanks for the skills. -- Reaver

     Beet soup. With cream.

Meda -- That makes me 0-2 in our match ups. Our managers seem to enjoy comparing
notes on us, so I'm not 100% sure there is anything that I can do to improve my
fortunes against you except maybe get a little luckier next time! -- Tamerlane

Renton -- So goes the story of my career! I lose the fights that I should easily win
and and I win the fights that I have no business winning. So with that in mind, I'm
praying for more bad match ups. -- Julian of Norwich

Blue Nova -- Not exactly an ideal match up for you. Was your manager challenging
blindly? -- Caedmon

Visionist -- Congrats on Jaklak. I believe that makes #12 for you and puts you one
step closer to the round robin. I've tapped the SYP Editor to give us an update for
turn 150 on such dealings. -- Master Darque

Tamerlane -- Meda has a knack for performing "escape artist" moves when needed! She
definitely needed them in your fight! -- DeGotti

I have a few more turns to evaluate Hittius' performance to see if he can manage his
profession! -- DeGotti

Vanek -- I see Glabrio has returned to his killing ways! -- DeGotti

Caadmon -- I have absolutely NO idea how that happened! -- Blue Nova

Verity -- There has to be a lesson to be learned from this. Darned if I know what it
is, though. -- Comet Boy

Scipio -- What's with the editorial? "Viciously subdued"?? You were pamtomg spjard

Summer Bay Shot -- Yeah, I don't have any guys to Bloodfeud. Sure, I gotta bunch
wearin' armor and swingin' steel, but if ya can see the scoreboard, ya know what I'm

The Arcane Kid
P.S. We want the money up front.

Vanek -- Have you noticed that I didn't (and don't) complain about the challenges you
make in initiates? You know why? In the Initiates and Challenger Initiates, I don't
consider there to be any 'true' up or down challenging. However, in the levels above
those... we'll have to see what happens, won't we? -- Kid Arcane

Otto's Diner -- Thanks for the complimentary coffee and dessert! Of course, the
antacid tablets are ALSO complimentary, right? Right? -- Search the Sky

Farseers -- It's not 'Look Far Away,' it's LOOK UP! And also, we want that TOP

Cat N Tonic -- Hope you enjoyed your tutoring. I am enjoying the win. <grin> --
Irwehn

Orting -- Whew you really know how to give a guy a workout. -- Reddig
