Lifting the Veil, Part 2
They said little more than, "Yes, sir" or "No, sir" when addressed and often
gave only a nod or shake of the head. Corga had managed to wrestle their names from
them. The balding veteran, at least Corga assumed him to be a veteran, was called
Jall. His remaining hair was graying and long enough to curl a finger's breadth
above the neck of his hardened leather armor. He was human, or at least Corga
thought he was human, there was perhaps some dwarvish ancestry somewhere in the line.
His broad shoulders held the straps of his leather armor tenuously. The armor itself
was well maintained, yet it dated, stylish over a decade ago in southern Andorian
lands. A noticeable scar was worn on Jall's right cheek as both a badge of honor and
a warning. The old wound extended from the corner of his mouth to the hairline just
behind his right ear. Corga noted that top of his ear was missing. The scar gave
Corga some hope that Jall was a seasoned warrior, or at the very least was not a new
recruit that could be frightened into inaction at the first sign of danger. The
Commission officer was not as confident in the other guard.
Jall's younger companion was of the nervous sort. When Corga had asked his name
as they departed the Commission offices before sunrise, he stuttered for a few
moments and finally pushed out a rushed, "Egon." Corga was not sure if being
assigned to a Commission official had the young man on edge or the knowledge of their
destination. Whatever his anxiety, Egon was slow of tongue but quick of body in
their early morning jaunt through the city. Corga noted a nimbleness to him that he
did not see in Jall. Corga's opinion of the green recruit changed little,
attributing the sprightliness to youth rather than any formidable skill.
The trio reached the Darque Ages guild promptly at sunrise. Corga had tried for
weeks to no avail at scheduling an appointment with Damien Darque, known to the
gladiatorial world as Master Darque. The steward of the guild house, an elderly
human named Leviticus, had been cordial with every conversation, yet evasive as to
the whereabouts of his employer or when he would return to Shadowspire. Since formal
channels of communication were proving inadequate, Corga thought a more direct
approach was necessary.
Early in the week, Corga learned through his various sources that Darque always
attended the fights in Shadowspire. The forthcoming anniversary almost assured Corga
the half-demon would be in town. Corga was intelligent enough to know Darque's mere
presence was not enough to insure a meeting. Since it was Gladiatorial Commission
business, Corga took the time to draw up papers that demanded a meeting with Darque
or the forfeiture of rights for his Darque Ages guild to participate in the games.
The threat gained them access to the guild house foyer as Leviticus scurried down a
hallway and up a spiral staircase. He returned moments later and signaled the trio
to follow him.
Corga and the two Commission guards were led from the elegant foyer down an
equally impressive hallway. Paintings, mostly landscapes adorned the walls. Light
scones, illuminating with a magical yellowish hue, adorned the walls, lighting the
hallway and giving a soft aura to the paintings. Corga was impressed with the decor.
Every anecdote Corga had heard concerning Darque was a twisted tale of vengeance and
destruction. To see such refined tastes in art did not fit with Corga's preconceived
notions about the half-demon. At the end of the hallway, Leviticus motioned them
into a parlor. The steward offered the typical platitudes to the trio that accompany
waiting for someone and disappeared again.
The guards who accompanied Corga did not appear bothered by the wait. Corga
presumed waiting was a key aspect of their job and this delay was of little
consequence to them. Whether they waited on a rain soaked wharf or in the comforts
of a cozy parlor as they now found themselves, only the settings changed and not the
necessity of waiting and watching. They would be paid regardless. The guards stood
as Corga slipped into a wingback chair to wait. The group sat in silence for over an
hour before Darque entered the room, flanked by two dwarves.
"Damien Darque, I presume?" Corga said with a raised eyebrow and pursed lips.
He tried to put on a stern face to display his unhappiness. He had been warned at
the Commission offices earlier in the week concerning the wizard's hospitality, but
he meant to show that he would not stand for such treatment. Jall and Egon did not
appear to share his dissatisfaction or bravery and their faces displayed no emotion.
The two men stood motionless, giving only the slightest recognition to Darque's
dwarven body guards.
"You presume much coming here this early, more so than my identity," Darque
retorted without answering the question. "What do you want, lackey? It can't be too
serious or the Witch would have sent someone more..." he paused, eyeing Corga from
head to toe, "...capable," he finished. He walked by Corga and the two Commission
guards without the exchange of common greetings. Corga noted the disrespect and the
slightest whiff of sulfur brushed his nose as the half-demon passed. "You have one
minute to tell me your business or poor Leviticus will spend his afternoon scrubbing
three stains from my parlor floor."
Corga's confidence suddenly left him. He had spent hours this morning steeling
himself for this confrontation, but fear wrapped itself around his heart as a vine
climbing a garden trellis. He swallowed hard, looking to his guard escort for
support. Jall and Egon were shifting uncomfortably and offered little support.
Corga stammered, "Well, I... I have been..."
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hello again, my fellow Shadowspirators! It is good to address you once again as
your duelmaster. My bout with Knut was throroughly enjoyable. He's a great
conversationalist but tends to get right to the point and our time together was over
rather quickly. I do hope my next guest isn't in such a hurry to leave. It makes me
doubt just how entertaining I really am.

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly SHADOWSPIRE games. Former top team CULT OF BACCHUS
was unseated this week as LA PENTARCHIE moved up from 7th ranking to take the top
spot with a 4-1-0 record for the round. Warriors--remember that glory waits always
around the corner! Witness how this week BRIDGE BURNERS went 3-2-0 to move up 8 in
the rankings. Did only my eyes note the 4-1-0 record which LA PENTARCHIE managed to
post this round? I don't doubt that such a record will draw challengers! RYAK
RAZORSAW caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as he skillfully
bested LADY GODIVA and was awarded 25 points in recognition. In one of the week's
more notable duels, QUINN put down DROW, causing him to lose 23 points of recognition
in the process. Unwilling to wait upon the will of others, Duelmaster GREMLIN STEW
challenged LITTLE DARLING last week in a match to decide the fate of the throne.
Although LITTLE DARLING made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign
of victorious GREMLIN STEW. No confirmation, but my sources claim that the top team
has gained their position using magical aids. Charmed weapons perhaps?
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. My inside sources tell me that the
team to beat in SHADOWSPIRE these days is SEARCH THE SKY. At least, most blades in
town are looking to avoid them. Methinks more than a few here could name the guild
it was that spent the better part of last week avoiding SEARCH THE SKY. Indeed it
was LA PENTARCHIE. Loose talk at the arena has reached my ears and it but confirms
the knowledge that many fighters are after EDNA MILLAY. Watch your back! I cannot
but express pride for the fearlessness of MAY DAY who cast caution to the winds and
challenged INGRAT, a fighter 29 points higher. In the end MAY DAY was beat by
INGRAT, a "sharp" reminder that higher recognition is an indication of greater skill.
Still, it was a worthy bout!
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. NICK NACK has sworn to take up religion
upon living to tell of his recent bout with the Dark Arena horrors. A rare thing
indeed! This week marked the last days of MOUNTAIN GOAT who at 7-6-1 was dispatched
to the Dark Arena by the command of THE MOTHERSHIP 011's demanding management. My
hearty congratulations GLABRIO, for thy revenge upon KAMAL KHAN, slayer of thy fallen
comrade. Next time he will know better, eh? Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers
the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
If it were not for my skills as a spy I would have been mugged three times
already in SHADOWSPIRE. Nice atmosphere you have here! Ahh, but I can hear the
spires of a far off city calling to me. I must away! Till next we meet remember: a
fool flies into a rage quickly and often. The wise are angered by the same thing
only once. Zontani Sharp Eyes

Managers and warriors of Shadowspire -- I'm not going to do a spy report today.
Sorry, but I just don't have the energy. -- Larkin
Hittius -- That was a fun Bloodfeud fight, and we both are still alive too! -- Regal
Henry Miller -- Maybe I made a mistake challenging someone with so many more fights
than I. -- Shadow Wolf
Primus Star -- What an exciting first fight with tons of action for the audience to
cheer about. -- White Prophet
DeGotti -- Thanks for having Hittius stay around for us to finish out our feud. --
The Catalyst
Search the Sky -- Seems that I have started to close the gap in the rankings. We
will see if my new conscripts can achieve a few victories and push us out of last
place and you back into it. -- The Catalyst, mgr. Farseers
All -- Only a few more turns before the Farseers will become Chartered! -- The
Catalyst
Otto -- Normally I am not much of a Pasta fan, but I did like All Denty. Sorry about
the loss of one of your warriors. -- Trutts
Vincere Aut Mori -- I do believe you warrior Tranin 1080, was a casualty of bad
handwriting or and input error. My warrior Hittius 1880 was supposed to fight in the
DA last turn but didn't show. My apologies if it was poor penmanship that caused
this! -- DeGotti
Kid Arcane -- Nice spotlight. Keep up the good work! -- DeGotti
Visionist -- Logs? How dare you consider Meda a log! She is a wonderful Parry-
learning, -4 Dec striker! That never, ever used her favorite weapon, the SM! Such a
pretty roll up, for such horrible favs! 11(1)-10-10-21-15-5-13, I guess good
replacements have their trade-offs! -- DeGotti
Black Prince -- Just wanted to see if my skills had increased since our last
encounter. Nothing personal about the challenge. -- Word Thief
Word Thief -- I should have known that challenge was coming at some point. Congrats
on the win. -- The Black Prince
Martiln -- Well, that was tense for a while! Lots of back and forth and certainly
exciting! I'm sure there was more than one spectator that missed our fight because
they decided to go to the bathroom or concession stand thinking we'd be boring. How
wrong they were! -- Lady Godiva
Al Zheimer -- You have discovered my kryptonite, which is apparently winning. --
Julian of Norwich
Kenai -- While I do enjoy wins, it gets bothersome when I keep matching up with
warriors below me in the rankings that can teach me nothing new. -- Caedmon
P.S. Of course, getting those match ups might cause me to prematurely die, so
perhaps I should not be so bummed.
RUGS -- Come on! -- Master Darque
Shadowspire -- I can't believe you let Otto take the throne <head shake>, now we will
never be able to shut him up. -- Gentleben
All -- How's it goin', Big S, looking a little sparse since I was here. -- Gentleben
Bond-Age -- Perhaps we are seeing the beginnings of the newest big rivalry in
Shadowspire? After Nick-Nack made a huge down challenge and killed Eborius, I swore
I'd get my bloodfeud vengence later since I had nobody able to bloodfeud for me at
the time. After a couple of downchallenges of my own towards you to return the
favor, you responded with another large down challenge to slay poor Scipio. Despite
the fact that both were only mediocre Strikers, their loss was still felt as they
were both sporting pretty nice winning records at the times of their deaths. I tend
to carry a grudge and have a long memory, so I suspect we will be seeing alot of each
other's warriors in the coming months/years as I intend to match blood for blood.
See you on the sands. -- Vanek, Manager of Warmasters
On The Shoulders Of -- Welcome to Shadowspire. I hope you enjoy your time here as
much as I have. Best of luck to you! -- Vanek
Failed Dog Trick -- That result surprised me. I thought I'd win for sure if matched
against you. Maybe next time. -- Agorix
