The moon's glowing face was full of promise, and very bright. The Southwest Forest Road reflected its brilliance as it left the sturdy and heavily barred Merchant's Gate and descended gently down the long slope and swept into the forest. The road was wide and true; its rough paving stones had been cast as hexagons and were securely set. A couple of kilometers from the gate, just before the road vanished under the thick black cover of spruce and pine, a man suddenly appeared. He glided silently out of the cold, dark forest like an armored ghost. The breath from his nostrils cast a silvery white shadow behind him as he moved toward the city gate with a purposeful air. He was a brawny man with grizzled, short-cropped hair bristling from a squarish skull. He wore a curious suit of ringmail that seemed a bit odd. There was the tempered steel coil that served as a collar behind the thick neck of the man, for one thing. Also, imbedded in the padded sweep of supple leather across his back and shoulders laid a curious pattern of overlapping steel triangles that hinted of ancient geomancy and armies long vanished from the world. The naked blade of a falchion dangled casually from the man's calloused right hand. A pair of bodies scraped and squirmed awkwardly against the paving stones as they dragged behind him. Their ankles were bound together with a leather belt; the end of the belt was twisted in the man's left hand. A screeching wail pierced the silent night, causing the burly man to mouth a silent curse and drop the legs of the men he had been towing. He sheathed his blade and folded his arms across his broad chest as a ribbon of light formed in the frigid night air, a mere meter away, then disappeared abruptly. In its place, a slender youth stood in the road. Instead of armor, the youth wore a knee-length blue linen toga embroidered along its edges with tiny runes stitched in gold thread. The runes glittered brightly in the moonlight. The youth did not appear to notice the coldness of the night. He stood and smiled at the brawny man who, in turn, appraised the youth with a crooked frown. After a few moments the youth shrugged, set his hands on his hips, and rocked back and forth. His sandals scraped softly against the rough paving stones. "Well now, Havoc, what are you doing out here at this hour of the night?" the youth asked. "As if ya didn't know," growled Havoc through gritted teeth. "Whatta ya doin' here, Kid? Goin' to open the gates for me? Be an honest help for once in yer miserable life?" The Arcane Kid grinned and waved a slender hand in the air. "I see you have some company." He nodded to the two silent forms lying in the road. "Care to tell me about it?" Havoc swelled slightly, then he blew a long stream of breath out his nose and glared up into the clear night sky. "Kid, ya ain't my momma." "No no," the Kid shook his head and raised his hands, palms out. "I'm not trying to pry. I apologize if it seems that way." "If yer tellin' me ya ain't spyin' on me, yer a damn liar!" "No no," protested the Arcane Kid. "I've been looking for you, that's true, but I'm not spying on you." "Yeah?" Havoc's head jutted forward slightly. "What do ya need me for?" "Well..." the Kid sighed and rubbed his slender hands together. "I've heard a few rumors about Master Darque, and perhaps a few other managers... and then I had a talk with some of the men at the barracks..." "Yeah?!" Havoc seemed a little startled by that news. He took a menacing half- step toward Arcane. "Whatta ya doin' pokin' your pointy nose in the barracks, Kid?? Ya don't call that spyin'?!" "Just concerned, that's all," muttered Arcane absently. He was trying to keep one eye on Havoc while studying the twisted and slack features of the dead men in the road. Havoc sighed, closed his eyes briefly, and shook his head. When he opened them again he met the bright glowing eyes of the Arcane Kid head on, without flinching. "These men are complete strangers, yes?" the Kid asked. "Naw, I don't know these guys," muttered Havoc with a small shake of his grizzled head. "So ya think Darque is upset that yer tryin' to steal his deal with the Council of Chimlevtal?" A glimmer of a smile flitted across the Kid's narrow face before he frowned down at the dead men. "It doesn't seem like his way, does it? Sending out a pair of sheep to be slaughtered like this." "Whatta ya mean?" Havoc snorted a white spume of air. "These guys look harmless now, but they were feelin' full o' piss and vinegar about 30 minutes ago!!" He said indignantly. The Arcane Kid moved closer and frankly stared down at the pair of corpses. They had both been wearing armor, but were now only wearing padded leather gambesons. Both had been stabbed through the chest. Death had been immediate. Their armor had been ineffective in stopping or deflecting Havoc's falchion. Arcane could have warned them that this would be the case, had they bothered to stop and ask him. The Kid smiled to himself. "Master Darque is a creature of shadows, Havoc. He communes with powers I don't quite understand..." The Kid lost his smile and frowned up at the moon. "But I seriously doubt that he would waste two men like these to attack you." "Yeah?" Havoc seemed unconvinced. "Well, we've kept our eye on him for a while," sighed Arcane. "I must believe that he's kept an eye on us too. That being the case--" "He knows what he's dealin' with, huh?" interjected Havoc with a wry chuckle. "Nnnoooooo, I wouldn't go that far," muttered Arcane under his breath. "But I'm sure he knows enough to realize that you're no ordinary gladiator or bodyguard." The Kid met Havoc's skeptical frown with a chuckle of his own. "Yes, Havoc. I'm certain Master Darque knows that you're much too dangerous to kill with just a couple of hired thugs. " "Yeah?" Havoc seemed to brighten up. "Ya really think so?" The Kid laughed quietly to himself, causing Havoc to grunt and grit his teeth. Finally, the Kid sighed and took a smooth step closer to Havoc and his cargo. "Besides, while many managers enlist the services of merc guilds for the odd service," mused Arcane, "Master Darque prefers to lean on his own people." The Kid nudged one of the corpses with his sandal. "Or so I've heard." "So he didn't send these losers?" Havoc ruminated briefly. After a few moments he shrugged and bent down and picked up the belt he had dropped. "Where are you off to?" Arcane asked. "Just goin' to leave these guys off at the public mortuary. A pauper's grave is more'n they deserve, but I'm in a generous mood today, so..." Havoc dropped his chin and gestured with his free hand. The Kid slid smoothly to the left. Havoc began walking the Southwest Forest Road again; the moonlight threw his shadow a pace ahead. The Kid fell in beside him. The bodies slithered in the road behind them. "You've been disappearing a lot lately," Arcane said after several minutes of walking in silence. "The past few evenings, if I'm not mistaken, you've been gone for hours at a time." Havoc stopped briefly and shot an angry scowl in the Kid's direction, then he faced Shadowspire and began walking again. "And I've noticed a lot of odd packages are stacking up in the supply room..." Havoc froze. He turned to face Arcane. The veins in his calloused hands stood out as he clenched them. "KID!! What are YOU doin' in my supply room??!!" Havoc bellowed. The Arcane Kid shrugged apologetically. "I'm just wondering what all those packages are for," he said matter-of-factly. "You seemed to have gotten a hold of a slew of decorations and party favors. There are crates of canned meats and spices, and many crates within crates, with foil-wrapped boxes inside." Havoc stared, speechless. Anger swirled across his wide face. "I couldn't help but notice," Arcane continued, "that you managed to label several of the boxes with gladiators' names. But, I didn't see any packages with MY name on them. Why is that?" Havoc looked into the moon's white countenance and muttered a foreign curse in an obscure tongue. Then he cast a hard frown at his companion. "It don't always have to be about YOU, okay??" The Arcane Kid nodded reasonably. "True. True. But still..." He looked expectantly into Havoc's eyes. Havoc rolled his eyes and resumed his trek. The Kid simply stood and watched Havoc as he dragged the bodies behind him. After a while the Merchants' Gate came into view. Havoc paused and squinted behind him. The Arcane Kid had disappeared, this time without the usual banshee squeal that usually heralded his arrival and departure. Havoc shook his head and uttered a dry chuckle. He managed to get the Night Guard to open the gates without much more than a small bribe and an implied threat of violence. + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + + The morning's chill damp air was softened and warmed by the roaring fire. Despite the early hour everyone was awake. The gladiators sat with crossed legs on furs and soft rugs laid out in a circle on the stone floor before the fireplace. Deep mugs were in their hands; smiles were on their faces. Havoc kneeled before a tall fir tree and pulled many gaily-wrapped boxes from under it. He passed the gifts out to the men, who chattered like children as they hefted and shook the boxes and held speculative arguments about their contents. Presently each warrior had a small pile of boxes beside him. Their laughter was loud; their cheerfulness was all consuming. As each warrior unwrapped a gift from his pile the others watched, practically mesmerized with anticipation. Meanwhile, Arcane stood aloof and watched coolly from a corner of the room. The tree glittered with various metallic decorations. There was a tiny gladiator in burnished bronze plate armor brandishing his greatsword above his head. Opposite him, dangling from another branch, a scum clasping a pair of medium shields stood poised to parry a blow from any direction. Many such trinkets covered the tree's branches throughout its girth, along with silver globes and streamers of glittery foil that caught the light from the torches and the fireplace and scattered them back into the room. Tiny bells, hanging from ribbons adorning the chandelier, tinkled merrily in the slight draft, while dozens of small candles, cunningly attached to its boughs, caused the tree to twinkle and radiate cheerfulness from the center of the room. "Well, I guess that's it," growled Havoc as he stood. He shot a toothy grin in Arcane's direction. The Kid's face was cast in an expressionless stare. "Ah, but wait a minute. What's this?" Havoc winked at the Kid and reached deep into the recesses of the tree, past the candles and tinsel and decorations. "Just one more present left, I see." He pulled out a small blue box from behind a gold figurine wearing a loincloth and flourishing a scimitar. The box fit neatly in his meaty palm as he held it out toward the Kid, who suddenly seemed unsure what to do. His eyes blazed brightly as he stared into Havoc's face and lopsided smile. "Yeah, Kid. It's for you." Arcane glided forward until he stopped in front of Havoc's outstretched hand. His eyes had been glued to Havoc's face, but now they fixed on the blue box. "Take it, Kid. It's from all of us." Arcane looked up into Havoc's eyes briefly, then swung his gaze around at the men on the floor, who had suddenly grown quiet. They were all looking up and smiling expectantly into the Kid's narrow face. Gravity Vortex nodded. "You heard the man, Boss. It's from ALL of us, right?" The warriors of Search the Sky roared a cheer of assent. The Kid sighed and reached out and gently took the box from Havoc's hand. He opened it. Against a bed of blue velvet, a delicate gold band clutched a large oval ruby. The ring shone vibrantly in the candlelight. "I know ya don't go for a lot of traditions, Kid. But the manager of a stable usually has a ring, or seal, or somethin' like that. I guess it's a graduatin' ring of sorts. Ya gotta let people know you've arrived." "We sent all the way to Xochithlan for that thing," chimed Celestial Steel. Moonstruck raised his mug. "To the Arcane Kid!" he yelled. "Hip hip, hurrah!" The team chorused. "Hip hip, hurrah!!" Havoc peered closely at the Kid, who held the open box with a trembling hand. A sudden loud screech, as from a thousand tortured souls, split the air and caused the men to shiver unexpectedly. Simultaneously, a brilliant kaleidoscope of color forced the men to squint and turn their heads away. When they blinked their way back into the room, the Arcane Kid was gone. Havoc chuckled thoughtfully to himself as some of the men stuck their fingers in their ears and tried to pop them back into 'normal' hearing. 'Lotsa luck with that', he thought. "Never mind him; he'll be back later," Havoc reassured the men. "Who's up for some eggs 'n bacon? I'm starvin'!!" DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Greetings and long live the Shadowspiracy! That's three turns down and five more to break Gigi Divine's record, but who's counting? My visit with Little Darling last week was immensely enjoyable. That girl is such a... well... darling. She can talk your ear right off! We had quite a lengthy conversation covering a broad range of topics, including the build quality of modern scimitars. She seems to think it's lacking and I tend to agree. We ended up playing patty-cake for about ten minutes, which was great fun. I hope my next guest is as entertaining as Little Darling was! Gremlin Stew SPY REPORT Like the magnificent Sun, rising upon the Dawn and exiling the Night for a Day, I, Novgorodny Vir, return once again! The boys at LA PENTARCHIE left the arena dejected, after being kicked out of the top spot by SAVAGE HORDE. Good show! LA PENTARCHIE after a sorry 0-4-0 might want to consider abandoning the sands and taking up singing the 'Can't fight no more' blues! What's a move up by 5 you ask? (alright, maybe you didn't ask) Cause for celebration, according to SAVAGE HORDE. FURRY FURY posted a nice gain, to come in 5th. Everybody loves a winner... Practice pays for SYE THE BEARDED, who pummelled THE BLACK PRINCE, to pocket 26 points. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking and practice more, after losing 20 points to SYE THE BEARDED. (Discrete enough, THE BLACK PRINCE?) Like a flirtacious debutante, SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster GREMLIN STEW found himself the man of the hour, being "invited to dance" 5 times! Duelmaster GREMLIN STEW from OTTO'S DINER is going for the gold, as he challenged CLAN LONGBEARD's REDDIG. Ooh, the excitement! GREMLIN STEW successfully staved off a grab for the roses by REDDIG of CLAN LONGBEARD. Does SHADOWSPIRE have no one talented enough to dethrone him? Word has it one team in SHADOWSPIRE is using psychics to predict wins. They lead a charmed life! And how sociable are SHADOWSPIRE's warriors? Come, let us see. Like the noble eagle soaring amongst the mountaintops, so stand the warriors of FURRY FURY, alone and unchallenged. Like a pup with its tail between its legs, WARMASTERS scurried away from FURRY FURY. Oh, the shame! Place your bets! IRONHEAD is the long shot of the week: they challenged MARTILN, up by 27. The gods smiled upon IRONHEAD, in his upset fight against MARTILN. IRONHEAD gets a win, 22 points, and a free drink on me. (Next week, OK?) Is there life after death? Pragmatics (and warriors) know there is death after life! Q: What's a record like 18-13-0 get you? A: A free trip to the Dark Arena! This week's winner: KRONSTEEN of BOND-AGE! Death (in the form of CAT N TONIC of FURRY FURY) knocked on KENAI's door. What will DRAGONBANE GUILD do? The suspense is killing me. Never one to advocate diplomacy and restraint, I was pleased to see OTTO'S DINER retaliate against BRIDGE BURNERS in bloodfeud! Ask not for whom the sword slashes; it slashes for thee. Leave me now, you base fools! Keep those sands bloody and the buzzards fat! Maybe third time is the charm? -- White Prophet Pistorius -- Down challenge? Half the fight experience? Are you such a coward? -- Shadow Wolf Longfangs -- I was hopeful to BF, not become the challenged. Good win for you. -- Regal All -- When dueling, what are the better offhand parry weapons? If my main is SC, would it be smart to use a smaller SH for offhand, or another SC? -- The Catalyst, mgr. Farseers On the Shoulders of -- Welcome to Shadowspire. May you enjoy your encounters here. -- The Catalyst Bridge Burners -- Nice 4-1 turn! -- Farseers Celestial Steel -- It seems that the law of heavenly steel is the ultimate one -- Law Adissa - When two sad warriors meet it looks I am the sadder. -- Catherdral Summer Bay Shot -- I was hoping to destroy your record. Oh well. -- Worlds Tobias -- Now I know how you got such a long beard. All those long fights. -- Magical Hugo Drax -- Why do I think that our fight could have gone either way? -- Truth Vanek -- Hey, I can respect the fact that you want to match blood for blood, do what you need to do. What I can't respect, though, is writing a personal ad painting yourself as some "victim" emphasizing certain words. When I down-challenged and killed Eborius, it was a HUGE down-challenge, and when I down-challenged and killed Scipio, it was a LARGE one, and it was POOR Scipio. But when you down-challenged me, it was just "a couple of down-challenges," failing to mention that one of yours was like 17 FE to 9, and 24 pts down, and I whipped up on ya. Trust me, no one in this arena sees you as a victim, and I doubt if anyone here sheds a tear if any of your warriors get killed. But I will say this, get your licks in quick as my interest in this game is at an all-time low. I make warriors in this arena styles less suited to what they should be just for boredom's sake, and if I don't get some really interesting roll-ups this turn, you may be left wanting. -- Hombre All -- Kronsteen: 17-8-5-12-21-14-7 Basher. Adex Attack and Adex Decise. Very Hi / Mod and the War Flail. Really thought it was Maul. Oh yeah, defense favorite learn so that's awesome. Sigh. -- Hombre Gremlin stew? Again? Could we have something else for Christmas? -- LP Merry Christmas, fellow Shadowspirians! -- LP Why did I challenge Renton? What a crappy exit... -- Clergeon Thanks for the tip, Julian... -- Al Zheimer Happy Holidays, All! -- DeGotti I hope my warriors show this turn. The results were late last time and caused me to send in my strats later then I normally would. -- DeGotti Floyd and Den -- Welcome back to the Shadowspire mix! -- DeGotti Turning Cathedral -- You Giant! You sure can take some damage! -- Adissa Cat n Tonic -- You hit pretty hard. Some day I'd like to show you what I can do--if I ever get the chance! -- Moonstruck Ultimate Laws -- That was just an unlucky matchup. I'm sure you'll do better next time. -- Celestial Steel Orting -- You call that "fighting"?! All you did was stand around and pose for Polaroids! -- Blue Nova Eye of the Deep -- Believe it or not, but I'm getting better! -- Gravity Vortex White Prophet -- Unchartered Recognition Leader? I guess you deserve it. But I predict "doom" for you! -- Ghost of Primus Star Bad Borscht -- Eh, it was worth a try. I thought I would at least learn something new. -- Regal Darque Ages -- Bad starting match for Genseric. Hopefully there will be no hard feeling? -- White Prophet Pistorius -- Shadow Wolf was hard of hearing so he ventured into the Dark Arena not hearing that fight start either. Now he will never hear again. -- The Catalyst All -- What are the common challenge rules for the Shadowspire sands? Is down challenging supposed to be taboo? Are there some allowable cases outside of Bloodfueds and title matches? -- The Catalyst Gentle Ben -- What team do you have in 32? Mine is Liveship Traders. -- The Catalyst ALL -- MERRY CHRISTMAS, HAPPY HOLIDAYS AND A HAPPY NEW YEAR TO ALL IN ALASTARI!!! May your year end in peace and the new year hold great things for you and your families. -- Gentleben (Sunset-21, Morya-28, Arvat-32 and Talahya-100) LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS KRONSTEEN was butchered by ARENAMASTER in a crowd pleasing 1 minute Dark Arena fight.
