DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hello again, dear readers. 'Tis I, your humble duelmaster once again. Since
nobody has chased me off this throne yet, I assume you all find my weekly ramblings
quite interesting, or at least mildly so. Anyway, I'm glad that at least some of you
appreciate what I write here and want to see more, so I shall endeavor to keep you
entertained.
My guest last week cancelled at the last minute, but we were able to book Feohr
again who was more than eager to come by with some more new toys to show off. This
time he brought a maul, which must have come from the same source as his sword last
time. It must have been rotten through the middle because it only lasted him four
swings this time. He'd also brought along a very pretty looking scimitar, which
sadly also didn't last. Feohr dear, take some advice--don't get your weapons from a
guy selling out the back of a van. Seriously, call my office--they'll set you up
with my shield guy. He does quality work.
Now, I'd be remiss if I didn't work in a bit of self-promotion, considering the
record that fell last week. The new record holder for total (and consecutive) DM
titles...is yours truly. A lot of people ask me how I can keep winning without
graduating. Let me tell ya, it ain't easy, sunshine! First, you have to have a
rating in only one area. I'll let you all debate which area and what rating. It
also helps to be in top physical condition. My manager said it's okay to let you
know I've got top ratings in both will and constitution. I owe a lot of that to the
DM spa--top nutrition and excellent mental and spiritual health programs. So many
people come into the arena with their chakras all out of whack. No wonder they can't
swing straight. I've said it before and I'll say it again--if you have the means,
you must try out the DM spa. You'll thank me later.
Gremlin Stew
SPY REPORT
Ack. The arena maintenance crew was supposed to shovel the snow around this
place, but they didn't do it. Still, if you've got to fall, better to land in eight
inches of wet snow than on hard ground; I only wrenched a knee, didn't break a leg.
I guess it's all relative. But I won't be dancing any jigs this week!
A few passing notes, reported by the Unknown Spymaster, who somehow saw them even
with a bag over his head:
The Mothership 011 went 4-1 and ended up in fourth place. I'm guessing that's a
rise from where they were last time. Other teams doubtless had notable turns, but I
don't feel up to combing through the fight listings to pick 'em out. Sorry.
Inidividually, Joseph Mitchell had the biggest point gain at 24. Kamal Khan had
the biggest drop at 19.
Otto's Diner was most avoided, with The Mothership 011 doing most of that
avoiding. Storm Giant seems likely to have gotten the most challenges, although the
clerks are being coy about it.
We had forty-eight fights with a mere two standbys. Thirty-one challenges, of
which five were to the Dark Arena and one was a bloodfeud.
Now, without further ado (ado is expensive, and I've got a budget here)--
The Dark Arena:
KNUT SUNDERHELM (81-1569) (23-28-3,102) of DRAGONBANE GUILD DA challenged HIGH
ELF (81-19) (0-0-0,60) of DARK ARENA. KNUT SUNDERHELM butchered HIGH ELF in a crowd
pleasing 1 minute Dark Arena fight. Impressive!
MOONSTRUCK (81-1929) (6-5-0,23) of SEARCH THE SKY DA challenged ARENAMASTER (81-
23) (0-0-0,100) of DARK ARENA. MOONSTRUCK was murdered by ARENAMASTER in an exciting
1 minute gory Dark Arena melee. I could've warned him. The moon is waning, after
all.
FERAL FERRET (81-455) (1-6-0,9) of DOC LEGRAND'S LAB DA challenged BANDIT PRINCE
(81-25) (0-0-0,60) of DARK ARENA. FERAL FERRET was viciously butchered by BANDIT
PRINCE in a 2 minute Dark Arena brawl.
MR. KIDD (81-1978) (0-0-0,0) of BOND-AGE DA challenged ARENAMASTER (81-23) (0-0-
0,100) of DARK ARENA. MR. KIDD was assassinated by ARENAMASTER in a 1 minute brutal
Dark Arena fight.
LEGRAND CLOE 13A (81-1982) (0-0-0,0) of DOC LEGRAND'S LAB DA challenged STONE
GOLEM (81-26) (0-0-0,40) of DARK ARENA. LEGRAND CLOE 13A was barely slain by STONE
GOLEM in a 2 minute Dark Arena brawl.
The bloodfeud:
RAMIRUS (81-1935) (8-1-0,40) of WARMASTERS bloodfeuded LYCANTHROPIC LYNX (81-52)
(11-5-1,59) of DOC LEGRAND'S LAB. Up 19. RAMIRUS was viciously subdued by
LYCANTHROPIC LYNX in a 2 minute Bloodfeud match. No luck this time.
The random matches:
VERDE (81-1983) (0-0-0,0) of FARSEERS fought PERSISTANT BEGGAR (81-4) (0-0-0,10)
of Really Cold Standbys. VERDE slew PERSISTANT BEGGAR in a 2 minute amateur's bout.
Hey! Do you know how hard it is to get a Beggar into the arena at all? And then you
go killing them!
VLAD TEPES (81-1979) (1-0-1,17) of DARQUE AGES fought MR. WINT (81-1977) (0-0-
0,0) of BOND-AGE. VLAD TEPES savagely defeated MR. WINT in an exciting 2 minute
brutal novice's conflict. A defeat you can walk away from is bearable.
PHYNN (81-1971) (2-1-0,22) of CLAN LONGBEARD fought METELLUS (81-1981) (0-0-0,0)
of WARMASTERS. PHYNN viciously subdued METELLUS in an action packed 1 minute brutal
amateur's bout. Naturally.
SANTA CLAUS (81-1966) (1-3-0,6) of LA PENTARCHIE fought TACOMA (81-1869) (0-2-
0,2) of THE WILLBURYS II. SANTA CLAUS overpowered TACOMA in a 1 minute gory one-
sided duel. Nothing like experience. Well, except superlative skill, and you GET
that from experience.
HAULIN' OATS (81-1957) (3-2-0,17) of OTTO'S DINER fought BAWNDY (81-1963) (3-2-
0,11) of FARSEERS. HAULIN' OATS was luckily beaten by BAWNDY in a popular 4 minute
brutal match. Probably need spinach rather than oats.
WARG RIDER (81-1926) (6-5-0,23) of SAVAGE HORDE fought HUGO DRAX (81-1948) (1-3-
0,6) of BOND-AGE. WARG RIDER beat HUGO DRAX in a 2 minute expert vs. amateur
competition. You ever wonder how the handicapper decides these random matches? He
must have a mind like a corkscrew.
MAY DAY (81-1947) (3-1-0,33) of BOND-AGE fought FRATSFA SLAVE (81-7) (0-0-0,36)
of Really Cold Standbys. MAY DAY overcame FRATSFA SLAVE in a 1 minute amateur's
fight. Good work.
CABICHON (81-1914) (7-6-0,54) of LA PENTARCHIE fought HENRY MILLER (81-1846) (4-
20-0,32) of LITERATE LOONS. CABICHON demolished HENRY MILLER in a 1 minute uneven
conflict. Everyone's a critic!
BAD BORSCHT (81-1894) (7-9-2,51) of OTTO'S DINER fought EYE OF THE DEEP (81-
1923) (8-4-0,28) of MONSTER MANUAL. BAD BORSCHT vanquished EYE OF THE DEEP in a 1
minute mismatched duel. There are EYES in the borscht? Euwh! I hate it when my
meal can look back at me.
PICKER (81-1890) (9-14-1,42) of BRIDGE BURNERS fought CELESTIAL STEEL (81-1931)
(5-5-0,33) of SEARCH THE SKY. PICKER viciously subdued CELESTIAL STEEL in a popular
2 minute brutal match. I see "bridge burner" and "brutal match" in the same
sentence, and I think "arson."
THE DRONE (81-1862) (11-10-1,57) of LA PENTARCHIE fought JOURNEYMAN (81-1967)
(4-0-0,53) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. THE DRONE won victory over JOURNEYMAN in a 1 minute
master vs. novice bout. Experience. Hard to beat.
KAMAL KHAN (81-1883) (9-4-1,66) of BOND-AGE fought SACRED SABLE (81-335) (7-6-
0,47) of DOC LEGRAND'S LAB. KAMAL KHAN was vanquished by SACRED SABLE in a 1 minute
one-sided bout. It was for this loss that Kamal Khan "dropped like a basher in the
top ten."
JOSEPH MITCHELL (81-1746) (16-22-1,90) of LITERATE LOONS fought THE BLACK PRINCE
(81-1841) (15-10-0,66) of DARQUE AGES. JOSEPH MITCHELL murdered THE BLACK PRINCE in
a 1 minute one-sided conflict. Whoa! And this murder (not my word, the steward
picked it) got Joseph the biggest point gain. Makes you wonder.
FEOHR (81-1737) (19-20-1,104) of CLAN LONGBEARD fought PURPLE WORM (81-1775)
(16-20-1,88) of MONSTER MANUAL. FEOHR was savagely defeated by PURPLE WORM in a 2
minute brutal veteran's fray. Well, of course. After the way Feohr partied last
night, he probably thought the Purple Worm was just another hallucination.
RENTON (81-1623) (18-17-1,92) of THE WILLBURYS II fought QUINN (81-1634) (10-9-
1,89) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. RENTON was subdued by QUINN in a crowd pleasing 1
minute match. Part of the Mothership's notable turn.
MARTILN (81-1742) (22-15-0,102) of CLAN LONGBEARD fought ZADIE SMITH (81-1701)
(19-23-0,86) of LITERATE LOONS. MARTILN was savagely defeated by ZADIE SMITH in a
popular 4 minute expert's contest. Regardless of the facts, no woman likes to be
CALLED a loon, Martiln.
IRWEHN (81-1785) (19-15-0,105) of CLAN LONGBEARD fought HOMONCULOUS (81-1851)
(12-10-0,79) of MONSTER MANUAL. IRWEHN overpowered HOMONCULOUS in a 1 minute
gruesome one-sided bout. Ah. A homonculous is a golem, right?
The challenges:
LITTLE PEA (81-1970) (1-1-0,11) of CULT OF BACCHUS challenged XIOMBURG (81-1964)
(2-2-0,19) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. Up 8. LITTLE PEA was overpowered by XIOMBURG in a
1 minute one-sided Challenge match. Oh, well, pease.
EREKOSE (81-1965) (3-1-0,15) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011 challenged NOSY (81-1952) (4-
2-0,20) of FARSEERS. Up 5. EREKOSE outwaited NOSY in a slow 14 minute Challenge
fray. Yep, the Unknown had it right about the Mothership winning all over the place.
THE SEAMSTRESS (81-986) (3-10-0,19) of BIG LAKE OUTCASTS challenged ADISSA (81-
1949) (3-3-0,22) of CULT OF BACCHUS. Up 3. THE SEAMSTRESS was vanquished by ADISSA
in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge bout. You've got to work with your strength, and
you can see what the Seamstress's strong point is.
TARR (81-1938) (4-5-2,33) of BRIDGE BURNERS challenged LONGFANGS (81-1881) (8-9-
1,34) of SAVAGE HORDE. Up 1. TARR was handily defeated by LONGFANGS in a 1 minute
mismatched Challenge bout. Sometimes experience says more than recognition.
TREMERUS (81-1974) (2-0-0,24) of WARMASTERS challenged GRIMSTONES (81-1937) (3-
5-0,19) of CULT OF BACCHUS. Down 5. TREMERUS luckily beat GRIMSTONES in an action
packed 3 minute gory Challenge duel. And where would a gladiator be without luck?
STARRY VOID (81-1958) (4-1-0,25) of SEARCH THE SKY challenged GAMBLE (81-1635)
(10-9-0,43) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011. Up 18. STARRY VOID was subdued by GAMBLE in a 1
minute Challenge melee. I think this was the Mothership's fourth win?
AELA FIREBLADE (81-975) (6-7-0,31) of BIG LAKE OUTCASTS challenged BLUE NOVA
(81-1898) (7-8-0,56) of SEARCH THE SKY. Up 25. AELA FIREBLADE was defeated by BLUE
NOVA in a 2 minute Challenge bout. Hard to keep a blade burning when the snow's
coming down.
SENSUAL SHREW (81-49) (10-6-0,36) of DOC LEGRAND'S LAB challenged ORTING (81-
1815) (10-16-0,46) of THE WILLBURYS II. Up 10. SENSUAL SHREW savagely defeated
ORTING in a 2 minute gruesome Challenge fight. Sensual and savage both? Formidable.
WHITE PROPHET (81-1946) (6-2-1,45) of FARSEERS challenged SYFTAR TRAFF (81-1876)
(7-11-0,54) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. Up 9. WHITE PROPHET savagely defeated SYFTAR TRAFF
in a popular 2 minute Challenge fight. Lots of savagery around today. Must be cabin
fever.
REGAL (81-1904) (7-7-0,41) of FARSEERS challenged CAEDMON (81-1873) (11-8-0,41)
of DARQUE AGES. Straight across. REGAL handily defeated CAEDMON in a crowd pleasing
1 minute uneven Challenge duel. Impressive, Regal!
GRAVITY VORTEX (81-1895) (4-11-0,38) of SEARCH THE SKY challenged EDNA MILLAY
(81-1834) (12-15-0,56) of LITERATE LOONS. Up 18. GRAVITY VORTEX narrowly defeated
EDNA MILLAY in a 1 minute Challenge bout. Gravity generally wins out in the end.
Probably why I fell down. Instead of up.
QUARTON (81-827) (12-11-0,62) of BIG LAKE OUTCASTS challenged ONION RINGS (81-
1684) (15-26-0,71) of FOOD. Up 9. QUARTON was overpowered by ONION RINGS in a 1
minute uneven Challenge fight. Really strong onions.
KALAM (81-1888) (11-9-1,64) of BRIDGE BURNERS challenged SKULLCLEAVER (81-1877)
(10-8-0,74) of SAVAGE HORDE. Up 10. KALAM was handily defeated by SKULLCLEAVER in a
1 minute Challenge competition. But was his skull cloven?
AGORIX (81-1842) (15-10-2,64) of WARMASTERS challenged TOSSED SALAD (81-1686)
(11-30-0,70) of FOOD. Up 6. AGORIX beat TOSSED SALAD in a popular 2 minute
veteran's Challenge bout. Making jokes about losses by the Salad is too easy. I'll
let you think up your own quips.
GLABRIO (81-1800) (13-17-2,58) of WARMASTERS challenged STORM GIANT (81-1819)
(14-14-0,56) of MONSTER MANUAL. Down 2. GLABRIO overpowered STORM GIANT in a 2
minute one-sided Challenge bout. This is Storm Giant the Probably Most Challenged.
RYAK RAZORSAW (81-597) (16-27-2,77) of BIG LAKE OUTCASTS challenged LADY GODIVA
(81-1782) (21-13-0,76) of DARQUE AGES. Down 1. RYAK RAZORSAW overpowered LADY
GODIVA in a 2 minute bloody mismatched Challenge brawl. How could you do that to a
lady, Ryak?
TURDUCKEN (81-1784) (16-18-1,74) of OTTO'S DINER challenged DROW (81-1774) (22-
14-0,104) of MONSTER MANUAL. Up 30. TURDUCKEN devastated DROW in a 1 minute uneven
Challenge duel. Impressive.
IRONHEAD (81-1722) (22-18-0,84) of DRAGONBANE GUILD challenged REAVER (81-1879)
(10-8-0,94) of SAVAGE HORDE. Up 10. IRONHEAD overcame REAVER in a popular 6 minute
uneven Challenge fight. And there was even time to grab a sandwich.
INGRAT (81-1805) (16-14-0,74) of LA PENTARCHIE challenged THE CRISCO KID (81-
1912) (9-4-0,89) of OTTO'S DINER. Up 15. INGRAT beat THE CRISCO KID in a 2 minute
Challenge conflict. Fried him in his own grease.
TROLL HAND (81-1825) (14-12-1,71) of SAVAGE HORDE challenged AL ZHEIMER (81-
1886) (10-6-0,71) of LA PENTARCHIE. Straight across. TROLL HAND devastated AL
ZHEIMER in a 1 minute one-sided Challenge battle. Sorry, comments are failing me. I
think I'm getting tired.
FLAVOR TO GO (81-1633) (13-6-0,119) of THE MOTHERSHIP 011 challenged SUMNER (81-
1624) (21-14-0,128) of THE WILLBURYS II. Up 9. FLAVOR TO GO was demolished by
SUMNER in a 1 minute mismatched Challenge competition. The Mothership's loss.
TRUTTS (81-1889) (14-10-1,93) of BRIDGE BURNERS challenged WORD THIEF (81-1849)
(13-8-0,92) of CULT OF BACCHUS. Down 1. TRUTTS was defeated by WORD THIEF in a
popular 1 minute gory expert's Challenge duel. It's a tricky little thief, isn't it?
SORRY (81-1891) (13-11-0,91) of BRIDGE BURNERS challenged REDDIG (81-1838) (18-
8-0,92) of CLAN LONGBEARD. Up 1. SORRY vanquished REDDIG in a 1 minute uneven
Challenge duel. And the Burner wasn't sorry at all.
JULIAN OF NORWICH (81-1783) (17-17-1,99) of DARQUE AGES challenged CAZADOR (81-
1578) (25-25-0,100) of DRAGONBANE GUILD. Up 1. JULIAN OF NORWICH was overpowered by
CAZADOR in a 1 minute uneven Challenge melee. Good try, Julian, but some days you
don't get the brass ring.
For the title:
SYE THE BEARDED (81-801) (14-10-0,101) of BIG LAKE OUTCASTS challenged GREMLIN
STEW (81-1710) (33-8-0,163) of OTTO'S DINER. Up 62. SYE THE BEARDED savagely
defeated GREMLIN STEW in a 4 minute Challenge Title melee. Wow! Way to go, Sye!
Back to the practice room, Gremlin.

PERSONAL ADS
The Catalyst -- I will usually blood feud at least once when a death occurs. I vary
when that challenge will come to avoid becoming predictable. The warriors get all
bothersome and mopey when I let one slide. I hope you know there was no malice in
the challenge, which is why I sent Lady Godiva, my most non-lethal warrior. -- Master
Darque
White Prophet -- You certainly have a bright future ahead of you. -- Lady Godiva
Storm Giant -- I know, it was an "expected" challenge, but the choices are very
limited for my ilk. -- The Black Prince
Drow -- Of all the crappy random match ups. -- Lady Godiva
Is there any other kind?
Blue Nova -- Touche! Thanks for the learns, too. I am sure that I enjoy them much
more than you. -- Caedmon
Ghost of Woeful Wolverine and Doc LeGrand's Lab -- Welcome back! And sorry for the
not-so-warm, violent reception. -- Vlad Tepes
Zadie Smith -- Who says you need adequate stats to swing big pointy things around
with efficiency? -- Julian of Norwich
Vanek -- I feel honored that you felt the need to avoid my stable so much last turn.
I guess my warriors made an impression on you? -- DeGotti
Welcome back to the toughest, most spectacular, non-tourney arena Doc! Nothing says
"Welcome Back" like a death and a kill! -- DeGotti
Otto -- Congrats on the record! Nice play on words in your column to boot! --
DeGotti
Back on the winning side of things! I hope these newer guys have turned the corner!
-- DeGotti
Starry Void -- You may be without stars but your con, will, and attack were ever
present! -- Little Pea
Troll Hand -- As the ever popular Lee Corso says, "Not so fast my friend!" -- Word
Thief
Nosy -- I might be interested in a dance with you again in a few turns. So many
warriors with lots of con and big shinny armor down here! -- Adissa
Caedmon -- That was sorted out to my satisfaction. I especially enjoyed the many
crits. -- Blue Nova
Ramirus -- Seriously, who writed this stuff? "Savagely defeated"? If I hadn't been
so worn out from banging your sorry carcass all over the sands, I wouldn't have
fallen down. You went into 'deserate mode' twice!! "Barely managed to steal another
undeserved victory..." Yeah, I like that better. -- Celestial Steel
The understewards who write the text don't watch the fights.
Warg Rider -- It's time to trade up, Spud. That Warg is just too slow. -- Gravity
Vortex
Little Pea -- You looked so cute scrambling around in the blood-soaked sands! And
judging from that one massive hit that tagged me... aren't I lucky that the blood was
mostly yours?? -- Starry Void
Feral Ferret -- Not too shabby for an out-of-shape rodent-like creature. I'm sure
you'll do better once your team starts getting back into shape -- Moonstruck
Doc Legrand -- A new returning manager! Welcome aboard! Avoid my team! Tremble in
fear! Etc. etc. -- Kid Arcane
Flavor To Go -- Well done, it seemed it could have gone the other way just as easy.
-- Sorry
Catalyst -- Oops, I will standing still waiting for you to teach me some lessons. --
Tarr
Crisco Kid -- Maybe you should stick (pun intended) to something you are good at, if
anything. I am on a bit of win streak lately and I seriously doubt some cast-off
from a diner is going to beat me. If I had killed you, I would have received a free
beard trimming at the Clip and Stitch Emporium. You know the place? It is beneath
the shadow of that tall spire. -- Sye the Bearded
Gravity Vortex -- How about I measure you up for a burial cloth, would you enjoy
that? Best part about having Den as a manager is that he has a grudge problem. By
luckily slipping by me, you are certain to stand in the sand with an Outcast a little
less agreeable than me. That probably will not go so well for you. Of course, you
never know what my scissor will cut next. -- The Seamstress
Erekose -- Were you planning on just standing there the entire fight, or were you
going to eventually move at some point? Kinda reminded me of my first husband, and
you certainly ended up the same way, being beaten to a pulp and looking up at me with
a bloody arm. If you are looking for me in a crowd, I am the one with the blade on
fire. -- Aela Fireblade
Catalyst -- I would leave him at 7-3-17-9-11-10-13. I feel that anyone who needs the
extra 14 points does not know how to manage a team. All my warriors are trained this
way. Won't you feel better getting a win this way? Anyone can get wins the other
way. Be a man. -- Den, manager of the Big Lake Outcasts and High Priest of the
Allied Axis
Shadowspire -- Long have I been silent, and even longer I have been angry. I have
been absent from these sands for far too long, which is unfortunate. Much has
changed, I see that Cult of Bacchus is actually winning now, the Mothership has
landed, Otto has earned enough money by selling himself to strangers to open Otto's
Diner. Congrats, but I certainly won't be stopping and ordering the cream cakes. I
see Doc LeGrande is making an appearance, not really anything else to say about that.
I probably remember some of you others, but since I don't really care I won't make
any comments on that either. Just wanted to let you know that I am here for now, and
while I am here I will work tirelessly to kill as many of your pathetic warriors as I
can. For that is what makes me smile and giggle with glee. -- Den, High Priest of
the Allied Axis
Gremlin Stew -- That's quite a streak you have going there so far! -- Vanek, Manager
of Warmasters
Lycanthropic Lynx -- Well, that was an unfortunate random matchup for Pistorius.
Maybe he was jinxed though due to the name. Back to the drawing board I guess. --
Vanek
Tarr -- Can you extend your streak to 3 consecutive turns of avoiding the bloodfeud?
I guess only time will tell. -- Vanek
Celestial Steel -- You're welcome to submit a rematch request any time. -- Ramirus
Ironhead -- I guess there is no real mystery where you got your name, huh? -- Agorix
Deke -- Welcome back to Shadowspire. Glad to have you back. -- Vanek
Henry Miller -- Thank you for supporting my win streak, now at two. -- Regal
The seamstress -- Twelve minutes worth of learning, thanks for the lessons. -- Nosy
Tarr -- Eventually you will have to face our form of revenge. In whatever form it
may take. Just start holding your breath and waiting for it to come. -- Farseers
Adissa -- Did not see that being the outcome when I made the challenge. Maybe it
will work out better next time I try it? -- Bawndy
De Gotti -- Can you fill me in with what each style's popular numers are so I can
experiment with them? No internet for me. -- The Catalyst
Visionist -- I have not really figured out what rhythms work but have only played for
about a year now. I do try new things a bit but do not know what my starting base
should be. Any information would be very welcome. -- The Catalyst
All -- Thank you for continuing to read my questions! -- The Catalyst, mgr Farseers
If anybody sent in personals which do not appear here, ask yourself, "Did I send
them in plain text?" I did my best, but a lot of the stuff in this batch of
personals (more than half!) was one or another kind of formatting code.
Sometimes I can find the personals in the chaff, sometimes I can't.
