I surprised myself; I found I had time to give serious consideration to the hare-brained idea my wife had been harping on for the past several weeks. Maybe I WAS ready for a more mundane, conservative job like managing one of the betting cages in the arena. The pay was modest, but regular as clockwork. And as long as I kept my sticky fingers clean I got to keep them attached to the rest of me. Besides, the holiday and sick leave benefits were generous, and hey! Who wouldn't want free tickets to the arena? But as the Shag elf was looking me up and down, flaring his nostrils and sniffing the cool spring air between us, I realized that I just don't like working indoors. I need to be moving; I need to see the sky. But that's not all of it either. I need to NOT be bored to tears. Being a talent scout for the arena has its rough edges, sure, but boring it isn't. It's possible my wife just likes the idea of a husband that comes home at a regular hour from a regular job. A husband that comes and goes like the wind, meeting various clients in various places at various hours, can get on a woman's nerves, I suppose. Maybe, in her maternal, overprotective way, she wants to keep me safe. I squinted up into the cloudy, early-afternoon-type-of-sky and tried to ignore the pair of orcish-looking muscle-heads that were staring at me. Each guy was carrying a greatsword as easily as if it were a baton. They were waiting calmly for a signal to either let me by or carve me up. I felt REASONABLY safe, but not entirely. It's a slightly ticklish situation, and I rather like it. You just don't get this kind of feeling looking through the bars of a teller's cage, knowing you can yank a lever and drop an excitable customer down a long chute where brutes like this brawny pair will sit you down and hammer some sense into you. On the other hand, maybe the wife just wants to know where I'm at and when to expect me. Maybe that new tenant, an ex-gladiator, of all things, is making eyes at her. She is human, more or less, and a few years younger, and there are times when I have to leave town for days at a time... The Shag elf stepped back and my focus shifted immediately. "Welcome to The Acropolis, sir." Sharagorn elves aren't generally known for their warmth and humor, but nonetheless he managed to work up a small smile for me. "I hope you have a pleasant meal." He returned my invitation with a slight flourish and a small, mock bow. I nodded and tugged the envelope out of his sissy white hand and moved toward the door. I had to pause a moment while the two goons with greatswords made sure it was okay for me to walk between them. I had no problem with this; I wanted them to be real sure. Once it was established that my invitation was bona fide, they lumbered away to flex and frown and do whatever else the elf told them to do, I guess. I ambled through the revolving glass door and was met by a tall, stoop- shouldered man wearing red leather pantaloons with a matching vest. His shirt and slippers were both a deep brown, like his eyes, only softer looking. Unlike the other men running around the place, he also wore a wide crimson sash and a large sallet made of silvery-sparkly cloth set at a rakish angle. "Good afternoon, sir," he bowed. "My name if Felix. Mr. Arcane is waiting. Please follow me." He gestured behind him as he turned and began to stride imperiously between the tables. I had to skip along a little to keep up. I guess Arcane, like most of the arena managers, doesn't have a lot of patience. Too bad. It's been a while since his last great fighter (a WASTE going by the name of Patroclus, I believe) and I'm thinking it'll be a while longer until his next one comes along... Felix must be part greyhound. We crossed a gargantuan dining room in record time, keeping fairly close to the gently curving wall while dodging cute gals and harried-looking waiters as they scurried amongst the tables with their trays. Finally, we walked around a pair of chefs grilling a gigantic fillet of something on a spacious grill (a monstrous, heavy-looking thing on wheels!) and came face to face with a wide, sweeping staircase that spiraled up alongside the wall and out of sight. My heart sank when I saw those marble steps. A table on the rooftop of The Acropolis commands a great view at a premium cost. I had been excited, though wary, when I received my invitation. Now, as I considered the long climb ahead of me, the place began to lose some of its magic. Felix touched my arm and waved at me to follow. He went around behind the staircase and stepped into a round niche in the wall. I followed and found myself sharing a claustrophobic-sized closet with Felix. I fought down a moment of panic as he drew a curtain of hinged bars across the opening, which somehow caused the room to lurch slightly and then began to smoothly rise. I resisted the urge to punch Felix in his smug little smile and focused on the wall as it slid down in front of the doorway. Every now and then a dining room would come into view. When it did a surge of air pushed through the bars. Most of the place is ventilated via hundreds of meters of ductwork. Dozens of 'volunteers' are regularly culled from the city's prison population and deposited into a deep dungeon chiseled out of the rock beneath the tower. They walk for hours inside giant wooden wheels, driving the gears that move the bellows that supply the tower with cool, flowery-smelling air. I think. The flower scent might have come from Felix. Suddenly the closet rose into a welcome wave of sea breeze and sunlight. It rocked slightly as it came to a stop. Felix pulled the hinged bars to the side and stepped out; I was close behind him. My stomach continued to rock a little as I followed him to Arcane's table. Along the way I saw enough to make up for the trip. For instance, I caught a glimpse of a youngish brunette laughing loudly on the shoulder of Hawk, the manager from Savage Horde. They shared a cozy table littered with plates and bottles of various kinds. I don't know what he was whispering into her ear, but I know he's not that funny. The closest thing to a joke from him is when I've overheard him trying to motivate his warriors from their arena dugout. And I don't think that was his wife. She was a wild-eyed woman, buxom and bouncy in a tight-fitting leather corset that offered a lot of deep cleavage to peruse. Hawk was definitely perusing. They both were probably a little tipsy. I wondered why she seemed to look familiar. She might have been one of the fighters from a defunct team: GFE... I was distracted from wondering about that when I finally got a chance to peer out between a pair of embrasures and get a good look at the city. I was spellbound. It really is an incredible view. The Acropolis used to be an old watchtower. It's built on a colossal boulder of rock reaching from the edge of the great forest to the remains of the original fortifications of old Shadowspire. The boulder acts as a natural barrier between the forest and the city, and it's the highest real estate on the western side. It lifts the tower up so that, from the roof, one may look over most of Shadowspire, as well as gain an excellent view of the harbor to the north, and the great forest spanning from the northwest to the south, as far as the eye can reach. The boulder also acts as barrier between the tower and the other large buildings. Who else would want to chisel their foundations out of solid rock? Building it on the hardest ground possible must have been a grueling and perverse project. I understand the original Lords of Shadowspire used lots of slave labor. Felix gave a quick tug on my arm. I pulled my face away from a magnificent vista of steeples and pennants and found myself walking up to the Arcane Kid's table. It was small and set closer to the edge of the roof than the other tables, of course. Well, Arcane has his ways. His glowing eyes, set close together in his narrow face, give him an eerie and uncanny look. I put off meeting them head on while Felix pulled out a chair made of iron rods. Wide, heavily padded strips of leather were woven together across the back and seat. I was skeptical, but when I sat down I discovered it felt luxurious, yet supportive as well. The soft leather seemed to wrap itself around my back and bottom. I sighed and settled in. "Comfortable?" The Kid asked rhetorically. He offered me one of his trademark tightlipped smirks that have a way of offending most of the people with whom he interacts. I smiled and shrugged. Arcane raised one hand languidly and made an odd sign. "Good. I find that business works better when all the little cogs are well lubricated." A troupe of five beguilingly attractive ladies, wearing white silk togas that clung to their young bodies the way I wanted to, scampered toward us. Many silver serving bowls with domed lids were placed on our table. Bone china plates, tall, narrow crystal glasses, and silver utensils were meticulously set out. A couple of bottles in ice-filled containers were set on the table as well. I enjoyed the smiling, lilac-perfumed service; the girls all found a reason to lean over me or brush against me as they did their chores. Most other guys would probably have just enjoyed the moment, but there was something nibbling at the back of my mind that stole away some of the glamour. "Where's Havoc?" I asked as the girls giggled away to wherever they came from. "Oh, he's busy." The Kid's narrow face twisted into a brief frown while his eyes seemed to pulse a beat. Then his traditional smirk reformed and he motioned towards the meal. I began to peek into the trays and help myself while the Kid talked. "He seems to find the cuisine at Otto's Diner more... palatable, of late." "Really?" I was surprised. The veal cutlets were so tender they almost seemed to disintegrate on the plate. The spinach salad was delectable. "Well, perhaps he is enjoying the... unique view." I couldn't decipher his hints. From where I was sitting I could look out and see half the harbor. If I looked out at the other tables I saw a lot of well-heeled merchants and a sprinkling of gladiator managers. I wondered where this was going but I didn't slow down; opportunities to eat like this are rare. Still, I kept my eyes moving around, just in case this was my last meal. The Kid mused silently to himself while I devoured my food. Eventually, I decided I had to say something. "You're spending an awful lot of money just for the pleasure of my company," I mumbled through my Fettuccini Alfredo. I swallowed. "You know my standard rates and services. I can give you a decent evaluation of most of the established fighters by tomorrow, but if you want the dope on one of the newbies, well.... They're always difficult to accurately appraise." "Don't talk like an idiot," Arcane snapped. "I didn't ask you here for that." He looked out at the other tables. He tilted his head in a specific direction. "What can you tell me about THAT manager?" I put down my fork so I could pick up my glass. Pink bubbles scrambled up its long sides. They tasted crisp, dry, and delicious. I turned slightly to face the direction the Kid indicated. A plump old man with a head full of tangled white hair occupied a table by himself, sort of. The table was set for six. Food and drink were laid out for six. The man was carrying on a conversation as if there were five others at the table, but I didn't see anyone else. The old man suddenly popped out of his chair and hustled to another seat at the table. He continued eating and carrying on his conversation, only now his mannerisms and tone of voice were changed. I chuckled to myself as I caught the Kid's bemused expression. "That's Consortium," I said. I toasted the Kid and prepared to look under a few more silver lids. A waiter hurried over and refilled my glass while I refilled my plate. Arcane looked at me and I got the impression he needed more. "He's an old- time manager, back when many of the current arenas weren't even built yet." I took a few moments to chew and swallow some roast lamb. Then I looked around for the mint jelly while I continued. "He's a genius, I guess. A pioneer. A giant. But like all great men, he has his --- idiosyncrasies." I found the jelly, layered it on, and relished the combination of flavors as they danced around in my mouth. The Kid looked over at Consortium the way a cat measures a distance it intends to jump, but isn't too sure it can make it. "Multiple Personality Disorder?" "Hhhmmm." The scalloped potatoes had a delicate crust of melted cheese across their tender surfaces. I served myself some more. "You might say 'disorder'. Someone else might say it's a higher order of thinking." "He's a madman," the Kid muttered. "How can someone like this manage a team?" "He runs about a dozen, I think," I mumbled through my potatoes. "Has a regular lecture circuit too, if I'm not mistaken. Offers classes for newbie managers." I had to stop chewing so I could hear myself think for a bit. "I forget which persona does the lectures. Anyway, they're pretty good." "Hmph!" The Arcane Kid sat back in his chair and crossed his arms over his chest. He stared at the table while I continued enjoying the meal. I had to slow down and pace myself a little. I watched Consortium bounce around to a few more chairs, changing his voice and his gestures to match. After a while the Kid looked up; his glowing eyes focused squarely on my face. I stopped with a fork full of sea bass and dill relish about halfway to my mouth. "I want you to concentrate on this Consortium. Get me data on his team in Shadowspire." The Kid nodded to himself. "If you can find any fighters he's rejected, interrogate them or point them out to me. They might furnish an interesting nugget of intel." "Consortium doesn't send anyone to the Dark Arena," I shrugged. "At least, not that I've heard. He seems to believe that there are no bad fighters, only incompetent managers." Arcane's jaw moved around a little; I think he was grinding his teeth. "Just get me that information!" he snapped. "I need facts, not speculation." I tucked the fork full of food into my mouth. "I'll get right on it," I mumbled through the sea bass. "Yes. Yes you will," muttered Arcane. His eyes flared. "I suggest you go start immediately." The Kid raised his hand and made another gesture. I managed to swallow and get to my glass before another squad of waiters and waitresses made it to the table. They emptied the table in the time it took me to empty my glass. I handed it to a nervous looking young man while a pair of nubile girls cleaned and wiped down the tabletop. I watched them scurry away. It was an impressive performance. "You're still here?" Arcane asked. I shook my head and pried myself up out of that wonderful chair. It was tough on an overfull stomach, but I managed to scurry a little anyway. I took the stairs this time, though. And I left through the back. I had most of the rest of the afternoon at my disposal. Plenty of time to drop by the Consortium's stable and make a few discreet inquiries. But first, I decided to drop in on the wife a little early today. SPY REPORT Good day, in SHADOWSPIRE a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. MONSTER MANUAL stable has parlayed this turn's 4-1-0 into a 8 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 10th place. Good work, guys! The FURRY FURY guild has had a 4-0-0 turn and deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's see, BLUE NOVA fought AGORIX and gained 21 points and contributed to SEARCH THE SKY's 3-2-0. AGORIX has lost to BLUE NOVA, falling 16 points, while helping make WARMASTERS a 3-2-0 turn. The attempts to dethrone the Duelmaster have failed, and SYE THE BEARDED remains SHADOWSPIRE's top warrior for another turn. Tell me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Dripping Blade uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle! He who challenges well, fights well. He who avoids without cause, shall lose for good reasons. My mama told me that one. I also notice that the WARMASTERS stable was the most avoided team this turn. Come on SHADOWSPIRE, what are you afraid of? And avoiding WARMASTERS more than any other team we find CULT OF BACCHUS. SHADOWSPIRE, are we going to accept, or respect this sort of thing? Well, sports fans, take notice that ONION RINGS from FOOD was SHADOWSPIRE's most challenged warrior this turn. In a fit of brilliance or of stupidity (hard to say sometimes), LYCANTHROPIC LYNX challenged ONION RINGS today, facing a 30 difference in recognition. But when the dust settled, LYCANTHROPIC LYNX had lost to ONION RINGS, and DOC LEGRAND'S LAB left LYCANTHROPIC LYNX doing chores when they went to the tavern. Better luck next time. Building dreams on hope, MR. WINT challenged up 27 points this turn to take on VLAD TEPES from DARQUE AGES stable. Even though MR. WINT lost the fight, he at least came away with a gain of 6 points for challenging on of DARQUE AGES. IRWEHN of CLAN LONGBEARD had better have a good reason for challenging down 11 points in a challenge which he won. I thought IRWEHN showed great skill and promise when he subdued GREMLIN STEW. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal! The Dark Arena is for those who cannot win, not who cannot lose with grace. Dignity in life or death is the warrior's creed. You gotta do what you gotta do. SEARCH THE SKY has sent GRAVITY VORTEX to the Dark Arena. The deed is done. Lift the ale, and toast the memory. THE WILLBURYS II has lost RENTON to the arena in the sky, but they don't seem to be worried. What do you expect from 20-19-1? We'd like to remind certain teams not to rob the graves of their enemies. You know who you are; and it's considered rude. I like this place, SHADOWSPIRE, the taverns have old wine, and young serving girls. Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in SHADOWSPIRE and I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. I do hope that this will be worked out soon. -- The Catalyst, mgr. Farseers Skullcleaver -- Wow. Easier than I expected. If you had held out a little longer, you might have had to change your name to "Skull-Dente." -- Blue Nova Eye of the Deep -- Hhhmmmmm. A little closer there than it should have been, don't you think? -- Gravity Vortex Tremerus -- Nothing personal. I just like challenging enemies who don't bother hitting back. Thank you for that. Sincerely. -- Starry Void Lady Oriel -- Are you a lady, or are you just a statue of a lady? Do you even have a pulse?? -- Stolidi Petra Hum.... I guess my guys need a little more managing... I have been lazy with the spotlights too! -- LP There's a lot of that going around. Santa Claus is not as jolly as expected, but well done, Xiomburg. -- LP It's awfully late, but welcome back to the returning teams! We are still a nice number... just lacking a real villain. Kellumbo, where are you? -- LP Spymasters -- Are you on Vanek's payroll? -- DeGotti There's a payroll? How did I miss it? -- Larkin Mr Wint -- I would have to say, experience was on my side there! -- Grimstones Safford -- That teaches me not to make blind challenges anymore! -- Adissa Sye -- Impressive column last turn! The wit and one liners had us in stitches! -- DeGotti Otto -- Just because you had to write 8 DM columns doesn't excuse you not to write PAs! -- DeGotti LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS GRAVITY VORTEX was butchered by DARK CHAMPION in a 1 minute bloody Dark Arena fight.
