Resource Management
The setting sun cast a greenish tint across a cloudy skyline strewn with the
exotic steeples, rooftops, and towers of Shadowspire. The sand in the training pit
was dark from a daylong, intermittent drizzle. A handful of gladiators, coated with
sweat and blood, staggered out of the pit and threw themselves onto the bleacher
seats.
"Hurry with that water!" croaked one, a female.
A stick of a boy of medium height and somewhat-elvish features dashed out from
under the bleachers. He wore old leather armor, much-mended and stained. His eyes
were dark and flitted in all directions; he seemed to see everything and yet looked
at nothing directly for long. He wore a perpetual frown of concentration as he
quickly went to each fighter in turn, handing out deep wooden cups from an ivory
platter that was carved with curious glyphs. As soon as the cups were handed out the
boy tucked the platter under his arm and sprinted back under the bleachers. He
emerged with a grunt, struggling with a fat cask in his thin arms.
He stopped suddenly, startled, as a strong calloused hand grasped his shoulder.
"It's okay, Denny." A stocky man wearing a black, well-oiled byrnie nodded down at
him. "Put that down there," he waved to a bleacher bench. "We don't wanna spoil
'em," he whispered to the boy with a reassuring wink.
The man scowled across the pit at the fighters as they slurped their drinks and
panted into their cups. "Pathetic!" he sneered.
The boy wrestled the cask onto the bench. He wiped the damp hair from his eyes
and waited. A small sliver coin spun a glittery arc through the air. The boy caught
it easily, a glimmer of smile slipping past his grim features.
"Get lost," muttered the man. "See ya tomorrow." The boy gave a brief nod, his
eyes huge and serious, before turning and trotting obediently away from the training
yard. The fighters exchanged weary, apprehensive glances amongst themselves.
"Hmmph!" The man shook his head and turned to face the gladiators. "That kid's
got potential," he said to no one in particular. "He knows how to follow orders, and
he always--"
A shrill banshee screech interrupted him. A narrow oval of shimmering light
tore the air; a slender youth in glittering plate armor stepped out. He glided
across the ground like a shadow; the curved plates of his armor caught the fading
light perfectly, causing some of the men to squint. The youth wore an amused
expression. His bright glowing eyes appraised the area carefully as the screech and
the oval faded away.
"Well, well, well..." The youth stalked gracefully around the edge of the sand
pit, one slender manicured hand on the jeweled pommel of his rapier. "Gave these
children a hard time today, didn't you?"
"Relax, Kid. They'll live."
The youth sniffed and cocked his head. "You realize, Havoc, that there are
other ways of training besides forcing our fighters to do calisthenics until they're
ready to puke."
The burly man threw his head back and blew a heavy sigh into the air. "Ya have
no idea how much I hate yer stinkin' guts right now," he muttered.
"Oh, I probably have some sort of a rough idea," laughed the Arcane Kid,
clapping his hands. Havoc scowled into his face and then turned toward the tired
gladiators.
"Go on!" Havoc bellowed. "Hit the showers, ya bums!" The weary warriors
struggled to their feet uncertainly. "Beat it!" Havoc scooped up a small stone and
threw it side-armed. It ricocheted of Petra's head and struck Cassiopeia between her
shoulder blades. She cursed steadily as she shambled toward the barracks.
Havoc nodded to himself as he watched the fighters pick up their pace. When the
last one crossed the threshold and slammed the door shut he turned towards Arcane,
who met his black look with a thoughtful smile.
"We need to talk," said the Kid.
Havoc grunted and waved toward the smallest building in the compound. He walked
towards it without bothering to look behind. When he reached the porch Havoc pushed
the door open and stepped aside. He was not surprised to find the Kid was right
behind him, silent as a ghost despite his armor. He nodded at Havoc and stepped into
the room.
Arcane settled himself in a mammoth-sized leather-covered armchair and waited
patiently. It took Havoc a few minutes to light the four kerosene lamps that hung
from their hooks in each corner of the room. There were darkening pockets of shadow
as the sun, behind a thin screen of clouds, steadily dropped behind the horizon.
However, with the lamplight it was easy to see everything in the room clearly.
Instead of sitting down in another chair across from the Kid, Havoc went to the
wall behind his desk. He pulled out a long crank handle that had been secreted into
the wall itself, and began to wind it clockwise. The ratcheting of gears and the
sound of a spring tightening was soon eclipsed by the whoosh of air that began to
swirl around the pair as a large ceiling fan began to spin. After a minute of
turning the crank Havoc stopped and pushed the handle back into its niche in the
wall. He flung himself into his chair with a brief, lopsided grin.
"Mostly yer full of crap," he muttered, "but I gotta hand it to ya. This fan is
great!" The Kid made an abbreviated mock bow from his seat.
"I'm flattered," he said dryly. "But we really DO have something serious to
discuss."
Havoc leaned back and grunted. The drops of sweat in his grizzled flattop
evaporated under the breeze from the ceiling fan. Havoc locked his black eyes with
the Kid's eerily glowing orbs. He clenched his hands rhythmically on the sturdy
armrests.
"It's about Petra, ain't it?"
The Kid nodded. "You know it is."
"Damn!" Havoc frowned up into the blades of the ceiling fan as they began to
slow down. "I was kinda hopin'... well, ya know what I was hopin'."
"Yes," nodded Arcane. "Me too. But it's only going to get harder from here on
out. And frankly, he's just so, so... stupid." The Kid chuckled mirthlessly. "I
mean, he's... STUPID."
"Yeah, he really is," sighed Havoc. He began to snicker quietly to himself as
he stared up into the ceiling fan. Arcane began to chuckle in response. Before long
the pair was laughing so hard they could barely breath. "Ya know, I hadda get a
bucket of seawater ready every time he fought," gasped Havoc. "He got so wound up
he'd forget how to open up his armor," chortled Havoc, "and then he'd end up peeing
in it!"
"Oh no!" giggled the Kid.
"Oh yeah!" guffawed Havoc. "I figured, hey! He's gonna go home wet either way,
I'd rather he smelled like fish than a baby diaper!" The two doubled over in
laughter for a while longer. The fan slowed and stopped; the thick, humid air
blanketed the room again and smothered their good spirits. Havoc sniffed, wiped his
eyes with the back of his hands, and rose to wind the fan's spring.
Once the fan was spinning fiercely again Havoc dropped back into his chair with
a sigh. "Kid, ya gotta figure out a way to keep that thing goin' all day."
"What about that young man I've seen around?"
Havoc shot a narrow look at the Kid. "He's just helpin' out for some quick
coin, that's all." Arcane smiled and shrugged nonchalantly.
Havoc breathed a deep sigh and looked up into the fan's whirling blades. "I
suppose there ain't enough saved up outta his winnings for..."
"A bribe?!" Arcane grinned. "One win, three losses - you can do the math."
Havoc sighed again and closed his eyes. "Yeah," he whispered. "I can do the
math." When the fan slowed enough to allow the air in the room to become sticky
again, Havoc opened his eyes. The Kid was gone.
Havoc stared at the empty chair for a few moments; his eyes glittered darkly in
the lamplight. Finally he rose and wound the fan again, and then he paced smoothly
back and forth between his desk and the wall while the fan slowly began to lose
speed.
Havoc paused after a few minutes and looked out the window. Outside it had
grown quite dark; the new moon was well hidden by cloud cover. The glass in the
window had become a dark mirror; Havoc caught sight of his reflection as he turned
back towards his desk. He saw a wide-bodied man in a knee-length byrnie of small,
finely tempered links. He saw a broad, brooding face under a bristle-top, no-
nonsense haircut. The face was tanned evenly except for a few small white scars, old
ones, on either side. The large nose had been broken at least once, but repaired.
The eyebrows were wide and thick; the face was clean-shaven but pulled into a
perpetual frown of disdain. The dark eyes looked back at him, serious and searching.
Havoc gazed into the glass for a few minutes, and then slammed a fist into his palm.
He went to the fireplace and slapped a certain rock at the side of the hearth.
A small, hidden door beneath the mantle dropped open. Havoc reached up and pulled
out a small silk sack that clinked reassuringly in his hand. He closed the hidden
door with one hand as he tucked the sack within his byrnie with the other. He looked
toward the window again.
"Who asked ya?!" He snarled at his reflection and made a rude gesture at the
angry face before putting out the lamps, one by one. "I'm the one that's gotta
sleep, alright?"
SPY REPORT
Good day, in SHADOWSPIRE a quiet thief gets rich, but a quiet spymaster gets
poor. So bring me ale and harken to my tidbits of news. It seems the training can
make the difference, as FURRY FURY is pushed out of top team by OTTO'S DINER, who
came from 9th with a 5-0-1 this turn. BIG LAKE OUTCASTS stable has parlayed this
turn's 4-1-1 into a 9 space move up the rankings. This brings them up to 8th place.
Good work, guys! The DRAGONBANE GUILD guild has had a 4-1-1 turn and deserves to be
watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can lead. And let's
see, TURDUCKEN fought ZADIE SMITH and gained 29 points and contributed to OTTO'S
DINER's 5-0-1. VLAD TEPES has lost to EREKOSE, falling 22 points, while helping make
DARQUE AGES a 3-2-0 turn. THE CRISCO KID challenged for the Duelmastership this
turn, attempting to dethrone MONSTER MANUAL's warrior. And not without some honor,
THE CRISCO KID now claims the title and throne of Duelmaster of SHADOWSPIRE. Tell
me, is nothing sacred? I have heard from unimpeachable sources that The Warty Toad
uses trolls in their stew. Talk about gristle!
Oriental wise man once say, 'Hiding behind shields prevents proper sun tanning.'
Inscrutable, but true. CULT OF BACCHUS has cause to stand tall, as they were
SHADOWSPIRE's most avoided team. A smart manager knows this is a team to beat. And
guess who avoided CULT OF BACCHUS stable the most? Believe it or not, it was THE
MOTHERSHIP 011. Anyone surprised? The most challenged warrior this turn was OTTO'S
DINER's warrior GREMLIN STEW. More fighters challenged him than challenged the
Duelmaster! In a brave attempt, HARE BINGER from FURRY FURY challenged up 23 points
to fight GREMLIN STEW from the OTTO'S DINER stable. HARE BINGER perhaps got his just
desserts, seeing as he was subdued by GREMLIN STEW and ended up with 98 recognition
points.
We only live a short time in this world, so why not take a sharp blade, and
shave it close? I guess it was coming sooner or later, LITERATE LOONS has lost ZADIE
SMITH, and SHADOWSPIRE is bound to miss her. For a little while, at least. Whatever
bright future SARGON may have had, it's all history now. The manager of ROGUES DEN
has lost a promising 2-0-1 warrior. A brave warrior does not carry a red shield, he
has nothing to cover or hide when the fight is over. Consider well.
Remember, blood on the purple robe does not change it from a purple robe. Dare
to fight bravely. It's been nice chatting with you, until we meet again, keep your
swords sharp and your hammers heavy. Until you see my quill in SHADOWSPIRE again,
farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

I was going to do you guys a spy report, I had already STARTED (barely) to do
you guys a spy report. And the power started flickering. I can't do a spy
report under those circumstances, sorry. Maybe next time it won't be a stormy
week? -- Larkin
To Ginnie "I LOVE BACON" -- You sound absolutely scrumptious, miss, tall, dark and
lovely! How about we meet at Jimmy's Cafeteria & Muffler shop over near the arena,
say at sunset? If things go well maybe we can continue the evening in a more private
spot. You haven't lived 'til you've experienced my warm bacon-grease massage. It's
an experience not to be missed. I'll be wearing my "Shiitake Happens" apron. Until
then... -- Hot Dish
Turducken: 15(1)-7-8-21(1)-17(1)-9-11(1) BA, good/good, Master ini/att/dec, Expert
rip/par. War Flail. Of course we never tried the war flail on him. Maybe he would
have had a better record if we had, but I doubt it. Anyway he's off to a well-earned
retirement on the Isle now and we're one step closer to completing the round robin
for Shadowspire. Six down, 4 to go. -- Otto X for Otto's Diner
Homonculous, Vlad Tepes, Worried Wildebeest -- Don't you all know, once you go
desperate or get knocked down, vs my guys, you stay down or give up? Please, read
and follow the script next time. Thanks -- DeGotti
Vlad Tepes -- I really thought I was going to be the first blemish on your record! --
Grimstones
Erekose -- Nice learns, and a surprise rating for your style! Wish you would have
taught me more! -- Adissa
Brindle Badger -- Thanks for dragging me down into your personal, slow, boring hell!
-- Beordin
Drow -- You now have top AB all to yourself! -- Word Thief
Hello, Shadowspire! Let me introduce myself. I am Stillgard, manager of Rogues Den.
I hope to be here for awhile.
Monster Manual -- Sorry for the loss of Green Dragon. -- Stillgard
Drow -- I don't often get my challenges through, but when it happens it's usually
sweet! When the skills are there, it's icing on the cake! Thank you! -- Blue Nova
(currently on a diet--can you tell?)
Sensual Shrew -- Given our disparity in experience, I though I did pretty well just
to walk away from that fight! But I warn you--it won't be so easy next time! --
Starry Void
Whiplash -- That WAS pure luck! I passed out just as you were opening your mouth to
cry and beg for mercy--no need to deny it! (By the way, Persistent Beggar gave
better skills than you.) -- Cassiopeia
Nightleaf -- Maybe you shouldn't stay out so late? You DID seem awfully tired out
there. -- Stolidi Petra
All -- Well, I killed THAT Mordant Deserter. Is he resurrected, or do they simply
get another? (Whichever is cheaper, I'm sure.) It was over too quickly... I'm
starting to scare myself a little. -- Scalpere Fati
