I have a three-room apartment in the northwestern corner of Shadowspire, three
stories up, about three blocks from the arena, facing the harbor. (What can I say?
Three is my lucky number.) If I had stayed in my apartment, I would have thrown open
the shutters on both sides of the place. The breeze from the harbor would eddy and
gust throughout the apartment all day. Despite the sun being up, I might even have
talked the wife into some social recreation. It would have been a good day.
Instead, I found myself silhouetted in the first orange arc of sunlight, getting
dressed to go out --- putting aside my usual linen tunic in favor of my 'working
leathers'. Usually I don't walk around armored in leather and steel, but then again I
usually don't walk around the southeastern sections of Shadowspire. I wasn't happy
about that, but as the old saying goes: "It is what it is."
Coincidentally, the landlord, more punctual than the sun, is due next week. My
charming wife often reminds me of his scheduled visits. I'm not certain if I'm
attempting to earn money for my landlord, or simply trying to avoid my wife's
prompting, but in any case I surprised myself by taking a job I would normally have
passed by, since generally I'm unwilling to risk my life while slowly being roasted
to death. But a job is a job, and this client is a regular. He pays well and on
time. These are traits that are currently very important to me.
My wife was uncharacteristically quiet this morning while she watched me
preparing for my day. We had had plenty of words yesterday; maybe too many and too
loudly. I don't like leaving 'domestic issues' unresolved, but on the other hand I
wasn't so sure I understood what those issues are. So, I ignored her while I geared
up.
The armor is simple and supple: small steel plates sewn between narrow strips of
tough pigskin going horizontally across my body. These strips are then woven between
(and sewn) to a knee-length tunic of pigskin strips running vertically. Oiled and
buffed, it's remarkably handsome and quiet, which is often more important than its
ability to stop sharpened steel from intruding into my body cavities. Even so, it
offers a fair amount of protection for the weight.
I slipped a shortsword and a hatchet into their respective sheaths, but I opted
to leave my padded helmet at home. Instead, I chose a peaked archer's cap with a
long narrow brim, front and back. It was made of a thin, stiff, breathable fabric
woven out of some sort of bison hair from the Rironi Plains. Not much good if I got
knocked on the head again, but given the heat... I settled it snugly and promised
myself I'd be more careful this time.
My wife knelt before me as I tightened my belt buckle. She began to place my
thick-soled sandals on my feet, and I let her. The breeze pushed steadily through
the northern windows. The drapes fluttered and her skin puckered into finely
textured goose bumps. As I watched her create the simple knots I resisted a sudden
urge to scoop her up and bury my face into her neck. She finished her task and
looked up at me with an air of uncertainty, but before she could say anything I
thanked her brusquely and left.
When I passed the looking glass that hung on the wall I saw a wide, sullen,
unshaved face on a middle-aged man, half-shadowed by the brim of his cap, with his
longish salt-and-pepper hair curled up slightly at the nape of his neck and tucked
back behind his small, tapered ears. As I unlatched the door and lifted the bar, I
wondered if that grumpy buffoon would manage to return home in one piece before
sunset. I sincerely hoped so.
I paused for a few moments on the landing. I started down the stairs once I
heard my wife drop the bar back into its place across the door.
About four hours later I began wending my way towards The Leering Orc stable.
The air was warm and slightly uncomfortable. By now I had met with a half dozen
acquaintances and paid out over 25 gold denarii. Some of the information was
overpriced, but in the interests of expediting my investigation I figured I'd just
pass the costs on to my employer. He can afford it. Besides, walking around on the
cobblestone streets of Shadowspire was going to be a tortuous affair by noon, and
noon was only a couple of hours away.
Fortunately for me, Otto's Diner was probably going to be my last stop for the
day. Otto's is a privately owned establishment run by one of the many eccentric
arena managers. It's a popular gathering spot for gladiators and managers, but not
all who come here are directly involved in the fight game. The menu is spare and more
of an offer than a pat statement. The rumor is that almost anything can be had at
Otto's --- for the right coin. Not surprisingly, the place is a hotbed for intrigue.
A dedicated squadron of flying bugs escorted me from the nearby stable to the
diner. I guess insects have no sense of smell. A swirling kaleidoscope of fellow
insects met us at the doorway; some had nasty-looking stingers. However, the moment
I yanked on the door a strange surge of air shoved the bugs up and away from me. I
entered quickly, unmolested and bug-free.
I took a few seconds to let my eyes adjust to the dim, cool interior. The bar
was where it always is since the last renovation, against the far wall from the door.
The giant mirror filling most of the wall behind the bar reflected a variety of eyes
coolly looking me over, but no one at the bar or in the booths bothered to wave to
me.
Once I had my bearings I headed for the far wall. I counted off three aisles
from the wall and slid onto a bench in the third booth from the end. There was
nobody else in the booth. I loosened my shortsword in its sheath and reconnoitered
my environment. It was the usual sort of crowd.
Three managers were drinking together two booths ahead. A tall pitcher, half-
wet with condensation beading down its curves, stood in the middle of their table,
accompanied by three carved wooden cups. Despite the hour I figured they weren't
drinking ice water. I recognized Nomad and Stik. The third was new to me. Nomad
was pounding the table and demanding that managers unite to put pressure on the
Gladiatorial Commission for better tourney prizes and recruits. The other two
muttered agreement and nodded like wobbly-head puppets. That pitcher probably wasn't
their first.
Some guy with a fancy doublet (the manager for Le Pentarchie, I believe) was
making googly eyes with a striking brunette at a corner booth to my right. I'd seen
her a few months ago at a more refined dining establishment - The Acropolis. At that
time she was laughing and squirming in Hawk's lap. That joke got old, I suppose.
Jugger and Hombre were hunched over a couple of napkins at the bar, writing down
numbers and arguing softly about skills and break points. Despite that, their
reflections told me that they were very interested in the brunette, too. They each
had a small, leather-bound notebook laid out in on the bar. Not what I was looking
for, but close.
A few gladiators were scattered around, each accompanied by a nondescript
citizen or two and generally minding their own business. We exchanged brief glances
as I settled myself. I took my cap off and felt the heat and sweat rise up off my
damp scalp.
A lanky waitress strolled toward me in a loose-jointed, tired, yet purposeful
stride. Her hair was blonde and thick and fell to her shoulders. Its blondeness
might have been genuine, once, but now it was just like her smile. She had tucked a
pair of small wooden combs into her hair on each side of her head to keep it away
from her sharp eyes and pinched face. She wore scruffy leather armor offering too
much cleavage. The armor, like her, had seen better days. The sleeves and
everything below her sternum had been cut away. The tattoo that ran across her
scarred abdomen was disfigured. The name "Bobbi" was stenciled over her right breast.
Her fingernails were dyed a deep blue to match her eye shadow, reminding me of a
lurid story involving a water demon. A desperate one, I decided.
"What'll you have, Darlin'?"
I actually turned and looked over at the menu board tacked carefully against the
wall next to the door. It was a new one. I noted that Otto had finally gotten
around to adding a disclaimer regarding food-borne illnesses, but I didn't see
anything about breakfast or anything to drink. I was feeling a little hungry, but
decided I didn't need anything heavy.
"You guys quit serving breakfast?"
"Naw," Bobbi replied. "It's just that we ran out of room on the menu. We're
probably always goin' to have that, Darlin'." She blinked a couple of times, which I
suppose was her way of fluttering her eyelashes, then offered me another
disinterested smile, which I returned.
"Great. I'd like two scrambled eggs, some fried potatoes, and a slice of toast,
please. And how about a glass of iced tea with lemon?"
"Sure thing, Sweetie." Bobbi ambled off toward the kitchen. She began yelling
through the serving window while she was still a few paces away. "Hey Francis! I
need Adam and Eve on a raft, wreck'em. Add Murphy with a sunburn, and a spot with a
twist and some gravel!"
A muttered growl echoed loudly from somewhere within the kitchen. It didn't
sound exactly human. I attempted to distract myself from wondering who or what was
preparing my food by discretely studying the other patrons. I ignored the occasional
peeps and peeks in my direction.
Bobbi didn't take too long; she brought the iced tea first. It was a large
glass and it was surprisingly good, or maybe I was just really thirsty. I didn't get
much of a chance to enjoy it, though. That's when my client and his bodyguard showed
up.

SPY REPORT
Greetings warriors! It is I, Zontani Sharp Eyes, here to bring report of the
clash and bustle of the weekly SHADOWSPIRE games. Former top team OTTO'S DINER was
unseated this week as DRAGONBANE GUILD moved up from 6th ranking to take the top spot
with a 3-2-0 record for the round. There were bitter words at OTTO'S DINER's
guildhouse after a 1-4-0 showing this week which dropped the stable into 6th. Dark
Arena anyone? Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness
how this week 7TH SANCTUM went 3-2-0 to move up 6 in the rankings. My praise to DOC
LEGRAND'S LAB for their 4-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought
round deserving of notice! XIOMBURG caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial
commission as it skillfully bested DROW and was awarded 25 points in recognition. In
one of the week's more notable duels, JULIAN OF NORWICH put down CAT N TONIC, causing
him to lose 13 points of recognition in the process. As is fitting, the most sought
after warrior on the challenge boards this week was none other than Duelmaster FAILED
DOG TRICK himself. This time out GLABRIO made his bid for the throne as he
challenged FAILED DOG TRICK in an all out contest of skill for possession of the
title! Although GLABRIO made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the
reign of victorious FAILED DOG TRICK. Informants "close" to the city champion have
told me that he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
Many and various are the arts of battle. In SHADOWSPIRE "art" is a word that
has long since passed from the language! My inside sources tell me that the team to
beat in SHADOWSPIRE these days is MONSTER MANUAL. At least, most blades in town are
looking to avoid them. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been hard
pressed to find any of DOC LEGRAND'S LAB last week. Busy avoiding MONSTER MANUAL?
As a gladiator gets older, the icy grip of fear lays hold of its heart. True,
GAMBLE? Who could miss your "brave" challenge of STORM GIANT? An upset indeed!
GAMBLE found itself outmatched as it was beat by STORM GIANT. There is no place left
further down for GAMBLE but the burial mound! Give LYCANTHROPIC LYNX credit for hers
courage. Did you note how she challenged RYAK RAZORSAW despite the 26 point
difference in their rankings? I must admit to some joy. Before my very eyes the
underdog in this contest, LYCANTHROPIC LYNX, defeated RYAK RAZORSAW to claim victory
and recognition. I can not but mention with disdain the name of BRAIN EATER who this
week posted a challenge to a warrior a full 9 points below in the rankings. I
thought BRAIN EATER showed great skill and promise when he was overcame by PHYNN.
All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Is not Death a warrior's foremost adviser? Warriors, may this counselor stand
ready at your right hand forever! My sources at SEARCH THE SKY stable claim they've
never seen the guild bitterer. This as a result of the untimely demise of SCALPERE
FATI. Beware SANTA CLAUS! Fate is a fickle mistress. She showers the miserable
with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember this!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? More than a sharp eye must I keep, indeed a
stout pair of legs must I keep as well! The endless paths of Alastari await me!
Till next we meet remember - the pen is mightier than the sword, but a maul is a
different story!-- Zontani Sharp Eyes

I'm sitting here at the writing golem sweating, and every time the sweat falls
on the golem, it sizzles and sparks. Plus, the sky is sizzling and sparking

distracted while he resequenced some ferret DNA to include sea otter size genes.
There I saw Master Shifu and Po spar at length with quaterstaves. I was stunned when
our match had none of the rhythmic clack clack of Kung Fu Panda, only the sickening
sound of your staff striking my flesh. -- the Sable
Pseudo -- Doc LeGrand was fascinated by you, as he has had poor results generating
viable warrior clones based on any specimen of Dragon. Of course that means we will
be seeing even less of him, as he reviews stacks upon stacks of old failed
experiments. I am happier to be based on a stable gene sequence. -- The Mink
Qahrie -- Mine was longer than yours, and that made all the difference. -- the
Meerkat
7th Sanctum -- Welcome to Shadowspire! Enjoy your victory over Drizzkill, he will be
a good one later on! -- DeGotti
Vanek -- Septimius couldn't finish the job! He hesitated, allowed Furio to engage
him and paid the ultimate price! Which of your PSs will I get to face first? --
DeGotti
Mole, Mole, Guacamole! -- Of course I know what Furio is saying about me. He is
constantly yelling it, while I train! No need to go down to the Skulduggery, that
place is a dump anyway! -- Beordin
Garbage Truck -- Pretty sure that's what I did! -- Furio 5
Psst! I hear the 'ground meat' at Otto's comes form the Dark Arena! -- The Mole
Ulrich -- You fight good. I better today. -- Whiplash
Bokrug -- Tet's go for a ride! -- Garbage Truck
Thief six -- My thanks, as always. -- Nightleaf
Berserker -- Hmmm... -- Urath
Lady Oriel -- You are one tough broad. -- Phynn
Robo -- Yeah, I hate ya! -- Osiris
Mystic Meerkat -- Ohhh so close. -- Qahrie
Whiplash -- In time you will be the one begging for mercy. -- Ulrich
Howler Aries -- Why are you breathing so hard? <grin> -- Toliver
