Freelancing (part III)
The Kid's eyes smoldered as he bent forward across the table. "Just tell me
where I can find my merchandise," he purred.
"You're gonna want to hear this story," I assured him. "It's not too long." I
gave up on Bobbi and my salsa and started shoveling eggs and potato into my mouth
again. It was very tasty.
Havoc's blush had faded; his customary scowl was back. He leaned forward and
placed both meaty forearms on the table. His big hands, heavily calloused, curled
together gently. He gave off a menacing aura.
"I'm waiting," Arcane said. I nodded and threw the last two bites of toast and
eggs into the grinder.
The paper napkins Otto gives out aren't much to talk about. There's always a
black and white sketch of one of his current gladiators plastered across the front
(he has the nerve to call them 'collectible'!) but they're made of thin, tissue-cheap
paper. This one had a picture of Haulin' Oats holding a pose with his weapon held
high. Given H.O.'s record, I was a little surprised. In any case, the napkin
disintegrated into sticky shreds as I used it to wipe my face and rub my hands
reasonably clean.
"I'm still waiting," Arcane reminded me, his voice thin and brittle. I rolled
my eyes and gave a deep sigh.
"You've heard of Master Darque," I began.
"So he's involved?" he asked. The Kid nodded and traded a quick, hard look with
Havoc.
"I never trusted that smelly little--"
"I didn't say Darque was involved in this matter," I interrupted. "However, he
might be--connected--to another demon, of a similar type, possibly a relative. This
imp runs The Haughty Harlot pawnshop over in the southeastern section of the city.
Have you heard of it?"
"There ain't much business in that part of the city," Havoc rumbled.
I nodded. "Mostly a slum. But as for 'business'?" I shrugged. "There's always
a market for an energetic entrepreneur, especially if there are no--moral qualms--
with which to contend."
Arcane sniffed in disgust. "That area of Shadowspire is basically a maze of
shacks and apartments built up against the city wall."
"A place drenched in mischief," I agreed. I sat back and tossed the remains of
the napkin onto my plate. "I have a few contacts in the area that claim that your
pretty bauble showed up there two weeks ago."
"You're certain?" The Kid's eyes blazed into mine as he hunched forward a
little; Havoc leaned back from the table and drew his hands into his lap.
"I cross-reference my contacts whenever possible," I replied. I lightly twisted
my hands around my glass to wet them with the condensation that beaded its sides.
"And then?" Arcane asked.
"And then," I sighed, "if I deem the information is as reliable as it's going to
be, I move on from there."
"If it ain't?" Havoc growled.
"You know how that works," I shrugged. "Anyway, the proprietor of The Haughty
Harlot was quite cooperative..."
I took this opportunity to wipe my damp hands on the bottom edge of my tunic.
Not all the damp was from my half-empty glass of ice tea. I stuck my hand into the
purse at my belt and fished out a slightly crumpled inventory of receipts. I
smoothed it out and handed it over to Arcane, but Havoc snatched it with just a
couple of fingers and laid it out on the table between them. I finished off my tea
and chewed a few lumps of ice while the two of them examined the list with meticulous
care.
Havoc stabbed at the paper with a thick finger. "What'd ya buy for three gold
denarii?!"
"A three minute peek at the demon's inventory book."
"Yeah?" Havoc seemed skeptical. "That's a lot of coin for a little peekin'!"
I shrugged. "You'll notice that there are many instances where I felt compelled
to offer--an inducement--in order to elicit cooperation."
"That's MY general modus operandi," grinned Arcane. "Who has the item now?"
"I'm getting to that." I noticed Bobbi was back. I held the glass up in the air
and shook the ice inside. "How about a refill?"
Bobbi straightened and wiped her narrow forehead. She had been cleaning up
after Gremlin Stew and his buddies. They left a lot of empty plates. "Just a
minute, Hon," she called.
I felt the sharp prick against my exposed knee just as I set my glass back on
the table. I twitched reflexively, but knew better than to do more than that.
"We ain't interested in hearin' all about yer day," rumbled Havoc. "Just tell
us where it is, or who has it."
"Yes," nodded The Kid. "We can handle it from there."
"Sure, sure." I gave a sick smile that didn't fool them at all. I had begun to
perspire again. "The thing is, it's changed hands quite a lot in the past ten days.
I'm thinking that you'll definitely want to know where it's been."
Havoc and Arcane traded glances. Arcane nodded at me to continue, but the
needle-sharp point of Havoc's dagger remained attached to my kneecap.
"First it was Floyd..."
"He's the manager for The Mothership, isn't he?" Arcane asked. "I didn't think
he was connected with the darker aspects of Shadowspire."
"Since when did shoppin' at a pawnshop make a guy evil?" Havoc muttered. "I
always find lots of interestin' stuff in those places."
"That's a fact," I said in a small, quiet voice. "Apparently you've been window
shopping in many of Shadowspire's pawn shops lately."
"Really?" The Kid cocked his head in Havoc's direction.
Havoc gave me an odd, intense look. I think he was trying to decide if he
should skewer me or not. Arcane half-turned in the booth and had both of his glowing
orbs focused on Havoc.
"Yes, well..." I straightened up a little in the booth. "Floyd seems to have
been on an expedition. It seems that he has had a brief interest in one of the
city's council members." I slipped my hand inside my tunic, pulled out my little
notebook, and found the correct page. "Your merchandise seems to have been used as a
gift for one of their wives."
"Yeah, a young'un, I'll bet," cackled Bobbi as she reached for my glass to
refill it. I felt the sting from the point of the dagger go away as Havoc leaned
back. Arcane closed his eyes and made a little sigh. The ridges around his mouth
told me he was probably biting down too hard. Havoc began to look a little warm
again.
The pitcher of iced tea resembled a bowling ball. It looked full and very
heavy, but Bobbi carried that jug as if it were made of balsa wood.
"Anything else I can do for ya?" Bobbi smiled, her free hand dropping to Havoc's
shoulder. I shook my head and took a few gulps to cool my throat and give me a few
seconds to think.
"Thanks, Bobbi," muttered Havoc. "I think we'll be okay for a while."
"You let me know if you need anything, Darlin'." Bobbi gave Havoc another
little pat on his shoulder as she ambled away. We all waited for her to move down
the aisle before we began again.
Arcane opened his eyes and frowned. "Why would Floyd give something so valuable
to a member of the city council?" He shook his head slightly. "Or his wife, for
that matter," he muttered. "That doesn't make any sense."
I shrugged and consulted my notebook. "Well, Floyd purchased the bauble from
The Haughty Harlot, and four days later SOMEBODY from the city council's social group
either sold or gave it to Buri, of The Aesir."
"Hey, Kid, that's back in Osksi!"
Arcane rolled his eyes. "Really?" He muttered sarcastically. The Kid took a
deep breath and offered me a wisp of a smile. "We're familiar with Buri and The
Aesir." He glanced up at the ceiling. "We used to run a team in Osksi."
"Astral Kin," I nodded. "I know." I sighed and shook my head. "Well, there's
not much left of Osksi. It's mostly a ghost town as far as the gladiator game is
concerned. There's been talk of closing it down, but some of the wealthier local
merchants are willing to support a handful of teams rather than see the whole system
collapse."
"I'll bet that's expensive. I've heard the place is so run down they can't fill
more than a dozen seats," Havoc sneered.
"Why Buri?" Arcane mused. "He doesn't have a team in Shadowspire."
"Well, uh... I'm not sure." I thumbed through my notes. "I discovered an odd
snippet of information..." I found what I was looking for. "Were you aware that
Buri was once connected to a group called GAPPDA?"
"Of course," Arcane curled his lip in a half smile. "The Green And Purple Polka
Dot Alliance."
Havoc chuckled. "All fun, all the time," he snorted. "They had some great
parties in Osksi, back in the day." Arcane shot a withering glance in his direction,
but Havoc ignored him.
"So are you saying that the GAPPDA are involved?" asked The Kid.
"No. I'm just trying to cover all the bases."
"This sorta thing ain't their style," muttered Havoc in a husky whisper. His
big hands clenched into tight, bony wrecking balls.
The Kid sighed deeply. "I wonder if they'll ever come back?"
I shook my head. "I doubt it. With Poppa Balrog, Staplegun, and Lunatic out of
the picture, they'll probably never stage a comeback." I took a few more swallows of
iced tea while Havoc chewed on that. He and Arcane seemed to be distracted. That
didn't last long.
"So you don't think Buri had anything to do with the theft of our item?" asked
The Kid. I shook my head. Havoc relaxed his hands and leaned forward again.
"Where did the blasted thing go after it left Buri's mitts?"
"Two hostlers traveling with a caravan described the item perfectly. They claim
it was in the hands of a gladiator wannabe." I checked my little notebook again.
"Montugue."
Arcane and Havoc traded frowns.
"He didn't last long in the fight game," I smirked. "He was sent to the D.A. in
Shadowspire, but popped up later in Osksi."
"Which Shadowspire team?" Havoc whispered in a rumbly voice.
"The Cult of Bacchus," I replied. "I'm not sure how he acquired the
merchandise, but Montugue had it when he left Osksi and was, apparently, en route to
Xochithlan when he suffered an unfortunate accident somewhere on the Rirorni Plains."
"This is gettin' ridiculous!" Havoc slapped the table and made my glass dance.
I barely managed to keep it from falling off the table.
The Arcane Kid tilted his head and gave me an appraising look. "What sort of
accident are we talking about?" he asked.
I shrugged. "The sort where your body is identified by the armor and the hair
color," I replied. Havoc grunted and traded another frown with The Kid.
"It's not uncommon for warriors to sew labels inside their uniforms, in case of
just such an event," The Kid nodded. "Who identified the... um... the remains?"
I gave a little grin and leaned back.
"A retired gladiator from Shadowspire. You may have heard of him?" I checked
my little book again. "Let's see... his name is: Patroclus."

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hey, everyone! Thanks to a fluke of fate (coupled with hard work and some risk-
taking), I am sitting on a very wide, very ornate and cushy throne!! The wine is
cold and the girls are as pretty as ever. Well, the view is better from up here,
anyway. Cabichon, no hard feelings, right?
Yeah, I seriously doubt that I'll be able to maintain this glorious spot for an
additional turn, but I'll do my best (or possibly die trying)! I won't challenge
anyone, but instead I invite anyone who's willing to step up. I'm sure I'll be the
"most challenged."
Now I know, I know... It's said that Julian of Norwich was the "true" winner,
but he really doesn't quality, being a sort of "undead" now, right?? Well, in any
case, he couldn't stick around for the ceremony--a real shame, I guess, but it is
what it is. We'll hoist a few for him later, if I can remember.
I'll be available for autographs a couple of hours before the next games start.
It's a limited opportunity, folks, so get there early!

SPY REPORT
Hail SHADOWSPIRE! Warriors of the arena, prepare to be praised and blamed for
your deeds. It seems the training can make the difference, as DOC LEGRAND'S LAB is
pushed out of top team by MONSTER MANUAL, who came from 5th with a 3-2-1 this turn.
Now, what did these guys have for breakfast this morning? OF WOLF AND MAN has turned
a 5-0-0 into 3rd place from 16th. Give me the recipe! Now keep the taverns open
late tonight, for there are sorrows to drown for 7TH SANCTUM, whose 0-5-0 this turn
dropped them by 8 into 20th. The THE MOTHERSHIP 011 guild has had a 3-1-0 turn and
deserves to be watched in the future. You never know where this kind of thing can
lead. And let's see, THETA fought BAD BORSCHT and gained 24 points and contributed
to RAGNAROK'S WOLVES' 3-2-0. BAD BORSCHT has lost to THETA, falling 21 points, while
helping make OTTO'S DINER a 1-4-0 turn. Well done, SHADOWSPIRE, the Duelmaster was
this turn's most challenged warrior. Perhaps BLUE NOVA is not as thrilled, being
challenged 5 times. LADY GODIVA challenged for the Duelmastership this turn,
attempting to dethrone SEARCH THE SKY's warrior. We should ask LADY GODIVA about the
thrill of victory, and what being the new Duelmaster does for a warrior, she's now
the one to ask. Can someone confirm a rumor for me? I hear the top team makes their
losing fighters do dishes at The Swinging Aardvark until they win. Maybe?
I tell you, a green quarterstaff lasts longer than a seasoned sapling. A basher
friend of mine assures me this is true. I also notice that the MERCENARY INC stable
was the most avoided team this turn. Come on SHADOWSPIRE, what are you afraid of?
And guess who avoided MERCENARY INC stable the most? Believe it or not, it was CLAN
LONGBEARD. Anyone surprised? In a fit of brilliance or of stupidity (hard to say
sometimes), AGORIX challenged TOSSED SALAD today, facing a 27 difference in
recognition. And now nobody knows where TOSSED SALAD is right now, after giving
AGORIX 16 points worth of recognition. As quiet chuckles rise behind me. In a brave
attempt, VLAD TEPES from DARQUE AGES challenged up 25 points to fight SYFTAR TRAFF
from the DRAGONBANE GUILD stable. VLAD TEPES perhaps got his just desserts, seeing
as he was bested by SYFTAR TRAFF and ended up with 71 recognition points. MYSTIC
MEERKAT of DOC LEGRAND'S LAB had better have a good reason for challenging down 8
points in a challenge which she won. I thought MYSTIC MEERKAT showed great skill and
promise when she subdued PSEUDO DRAGON. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
A coward dies a thousand deaths, a brave man only once. Wise men know this to
be true. DROW must have surprised MONSTER MANUAL this turn, after they sent him to
the Dark Arena, but the Dark Arena couldn't hold him! Had I not seen it, it would be
hard to believe. HARE BINGER was sent to the Dark Arena and lived to tell about it!
Makes you think, no? WARMASTERS made what looks to be a tough decision this turn, as
they sent TREMERUS, with a record of 6-6-0, to TREMERUS death. Farewell, his. The
Swinging Aardvark declares a free round for PHYNN and all of CLAN LONGBEARD, for
having revenged THE GOLDEN VOID's LIQUID LEN for killing one of their comrades. Is
it really true that SHADOWSPIRE has more dishwashers per capita that fighters? Just
thought I'd ask...
I like this place, SHADOWSPIRE, the taverns have old wine, and young serving
girls. Who could ask for more? Well, I'm burning daylight here in SHADOWSPIRE and
I've a long road ahead of me. Happy Trails. Until you see my quill in SHADOWSPIRE
again, farewell-- Alarond the Scribe

Santa Claus -- Ho ho ho! Let's give it another go! -- Starry Void
Cabichon -- That was close. Can you do it again? -- Blue Nova
Verres -- I already warned you, spud. You don't have what it takes to beat me. Go
pester someone else. -- Monoceros
Mole -- Glasses would probably help. You can't hit what you can't see, after all. --
Cassiopeia
Howler Aries -- I didn't hear anyone say "go"! -- Caelum
Ramirus -- Thank goodness you just stood there for target practice! You're supposed
to swing back.. I am pretty sure, anyway. -- Benedict
Whiplash -- That went better than expected! I didn't expect to have that much
stamina. -- Chakor
Turnings Cathedral -- Man, you're big! Like my brother Chakor, I can't believe that
I went as long as I did. Must be the management, for sure! -- Weezy
Howler Aries -- Phew! I actually dodged the return riposte! Wouldn't have been good
if I didn't. Nicely fought -- Moros
Vrath -- Soooo close to a 5-0! I was definately running a very weird strategy that
my manager didn't call for. The pains of rushing the preparation cost me! See you
soon. -- Deveoeaux
All -- Good to see some familiar and some new faces. The the battles begin! --
Tripwire
Floyd -- Sincerest appologies for that Downchallenge, that's the last time I let
Brain Eater fill out his own challenge form. He's barely a half-wit and probably
dyslexic (I meant to McGregor 2013, not Cloud Jumper 2031). -- Mordraith
Tripwire -- Good to see you back. Time to stir up some trouble I think. -- Mordraith
Santa Claus -- It ain't over 'til it's over! -- Starry Void
Cabichon -- Using "decisiveness" changes everything, doesn't it? -- Blue Nova
Brindle Badger -- There are just TOO MANY scum in this arena. I'm glad to help sort
some of you guys out. -- Cassiopeia
Mr. Green -- I think that ugly skin tint is due to poor blood circulation. If you
would MOVE once in a while, it would probably help! -- monoceros
Big Cod Piece -- We all know where YOUR priorities lie, don't we? -- Caelum
Agorix -- Shall we finish this off the way it started? -- Furio 5
Vlad -- I'd much rather have the skills. Yadda yadda yadda! -- Adissa
Edna Millay -- Your sword hath flash and cruelty in it. Your helm contains hate and
protects thy thoughts. The knowledge you shared will be shared once again. Well
played, lady! -- Beordin
Tripwire -- Welcome back to Shadowspire! You have always been a worthy opponent! --
DeGotti
Stumble Over Truth -- Thanks for bringing me back down to reality! -- Drizkill
All -- Well I am finally out of here. It is kind of a shame as I hoped I would gain
the throne before I left. I am good enough to compete on the Isle in time, so Grimm
wants to limit the info he tells you about me; however, I did hit SC fave and I was
+4 attack with defense fave learns. -- Lord Protector Hare Binger
All -- I must say I am getting sick of all the scum running here. -- Grimm
Ultimate Laws -- Were you looking at my junk? -- Bear Naked
Cassiop what ever your name is -- I will be better prepared next time. See you
again. -- Badger
Blue Nova -- Grats, but I am challenging for the throne. -- Cat N Tonic
Clan Longbeard -- Sorry for your loss. While I am not avoiding you, I am also trying
to avenge a loss of our own. Fate and Steel will decide. -- Liquid Len
DeGotti & Master Darque -- Thank you for the greetings. Our shells are new, but our
spirits old. -- Moribund, manager of The Golden Void
The Drone -- There is value in humility. The best course of action is not bragging
about my "then" perfect record against your team. -- Caedmon
Nightleaf -- My manager is still far from impressed with my record, but I will take
the wins as I get them. -- Maimonides
Syftar Traff -- Double dipping so close to our last fight is frowned upon by our
stable. A price will be extracted for the indiscretion. -- Lady Godiva
Gamble -- Sorry, my friend. You were an insurance challenge (i.e. my second). I
fully intended to unleash that fury on some one else. -- Vlad Tepes
Ironhead -- Thanks for the exiting win. I know Gremlin Stew ran closer to faves for
his career, but that win supports my theory that I could have dethroned him. Too
late to know now. I'm off to retirement. -- Julian of Norwich
