TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The sullen, half-wild bison trudged up the winding road; the heavy wagon creaked
ponderously behind. The gravel spread out during the last winter was now embedded
into the packed soil as if set in concrete. The Summer sun beat on the heads of a
small, thin line of men as they shambled in a loose circle around the wagon team.
The heat was mind-numbing, sending shimmering ribbons of road to rise before the
modest band and needles of light into their tired eyes. One of the men, a giant that
towered over his fellows, stumbled over a scrap of rock stuck resolutely into the
road.
"$%#$%#!!"
A broad warrior of medium height walked slightly ahead of the others. He stood
out from the others for several reasons, not the least of which was his choice of
traveling wear. The others in the party wore leather armor and carried just a weapon
(or two) and a water skin. This man had donned a sturdy black byrnie that covered
him from collar to knee. The wide strap that crossed his burly chest testified to
the considerable heft of a battle axe that lay across his back. His head was bare;
his neck was thick and burnt dark by the sun, but other than a light sheen of sweat
across his seamed face the warrior did not seem to be affected by the heat. He threw
a narrow, hard look over his left shoulder and sneered at the man who had stumbled.
"Caelum, pick up your damn feet and stop yer bitchin'! We're almost there, so
shut up and KEEP-UP!"
A short warrior walked alongside the wagon with a scimitar across her shoulders
and her hands draped over, and hanging from, the scabbard. Her face was narrow,
dirty, and lined from a repeated cycle of sweat that had dried and been renewed.
"UH, Havoc?" the man in mail ignored the voice. The woman warrior frowned, but
continued. "Havoc? How do you know we're close? Shouldn't we be able to see at
least some of the spikes from the towers by now? "
"Not 'spikes', stupid," muttered a grim fighter from several paces behind the
wagon. "It's called 'Shadowspire' for a reason."
"Monoceros, I WILL gut you if you keep this up!" snarled the woman over her
shoulder. Monoceros chuckled in reply.
"You're ALL so dumb!!" Havoc rumbled to himself. He didn't stop walking nor did
he turn back to look at any of the others. "Gravel in the road means that we're
close to a tavern or town. Close enough that they want to take care of the road,
anyway."
"Good grief!" The woman shook her head and took out her frustration on a rock,
kicking it up the road, and narrowly missing Havoc. Havoc glanced at the rock as it
skipped across his path, but he didn't slow or otherwise acknowledge it.
"You're too impatient," declared Havoc.
"Slashers usually are," Monoceros volunteered from the back. The woman turned
and squinted in Monoceros' direction, swiftly lifting her scabbard from her
shoulders. She pointed the handle of her scimitar first at Monoceros, then at
herself, and nodded grimly. Monoceros grinned.
"Yeah, well, we should be comin' up on a place to rest and clean up." Havoc
sighed. "We'll be able to see your spikes, or spires, or whatever in just a couple
of days."
"I wonder what it'll be like now," chuckled Monoceros. "All of 'em are too
tough for YOU!" Havoc smiled briefly as the other (all but Caelum) chortled and
hooted in response.
SPY REPORT
Greetings, warriors of SHADOWSPIRE! Once again I've been called out of
retirement for my abilities and insights into Spyreporting. Woof! WARMASTERS were a
bunch of dogs after WICKED MARTYRS got through with 'em! 4th ain't so sweet as 1st!
Hmmmph! I always thought ABOMINATION was an over-rated team and they proved it with
a 2-3-0! Ya gotta be quick on yer feet! Keep your elbow off the table! Thrust!
Block out the pain! MONSTER MANUAL is now ranked 8th with a 4-1-0 turn. WICKED
MARTYRS showed SHADOWSPIRE what they were made of as they fought with a vengeance to
walk off with 4-1-0. What's with HAULIN' OATS? He actually beat CLAN LONGBEARD's
VILMAR, and walked away with 21 more points from the fight. Laughs were big at
WARMASTERS while they watched THELONIUS clobber LIME RICKEY. He lost 15 points and
got bruised from objects thrown from the stands. I can barely restrain my enthusiam
for LITERATE LOONS' outstanding member, Duelmaster GERTRUDE STEIN. I suppose you
want to hear some rumors and dirty gossip about your fellow fighters? Tough!
No matter the time or place, men will always duel. The most avoided team was
WICKED MARTYRS. The bums at ANTHROPOS KRATOS couldn't face the challenges from
WICKED MARTYRS! No excuse for that! What do people see in SON OF SEITAN? His
10-5-2? OTTO'S DINER ain't talkin', but he's got 86 points. GERON expects the easy
win by going 21 points down. MARBARITA will find this a hard lesson! GERON left the
match looking worse than when she went in, after MARBARITA, with a 8-10-0, walked all
over her. BLINK DOG didn't quite know what to make of a challenge he received from
APYKO of ANTHROPOS KRATOS, who is 23 points below him. APYKO perhaps got his just
desserts, seeing as he overcame BLINK DOG and ended up with 56 recognition points. I
hate going to the effort of writing about the kind of fights that DRUECKE SPACE gets
in. He fights people like MR BRAIN SMASHER, 9 points below. I thought DRUECKE SPACE
showed great skill and promise when he defeated MR BRAIN SMASHER. All right, so I
slept through it! Big deal!
There have been some calls to lengthen the time limit. Do you want the fighters
to walk away, or not? Hmm... More surprises must remain in store for me, if TUVEK
can return from the Dark Arena. BLINK DOG larned his lesson (APYKO taught it well),
and we right likely won't be seein' 'im fight any ANTHROPOS KRATOS members with the
same gusto. Many a warrior has met his fate in a hungover stupor. You young
rapscallions, take note!
Many other cities have retirement homes for aged warriors. Any plans here? The
end of another Spyreport! That's cause for celebration in my book! Time for my

Well turn #198 is a new milestone for me, I am pretty sure this is the first time in
my managerial career that I've had 2 invites on the same turn from the same team.
With Grimstones graduating, that gives me 8/10 styles here in Shadowspire, with the
other 2 styles in the pipeline working their way up the standings! -- DeGotti
Why do a majority of my offensive warriors here get PAR as a favorite learn? This
makes ST/SL/BA and I think LU now that have all had PAR as their favorite learns!! I
think the RUGs are stuck, someone give them a swift kick to shake 'em up a bit,

SLAUGHTER CHALLENGE 2
Several years ago I ran a contest known as the "Slaughter Challenge" which was the
idea of a member of my alliance at the time. We unfortunately lost him during a
robbery attempt at the store he worked at. This November will mark the 10th
anniversary of his passing so I have decided to run the Slaughter Challenge again in
remembrance of him.
The contest will be held in Morya, arena 28, beginning on the turn that is due on
November 6th, 2014 (turn 378 I believe). Tourney participation is not allowed during
the contest but the contest will start after the fall Mailer so you can get your
warriors a few fight experience should you choose to. The timing of the contest was
done to allow entry into the fall mailer.
The rules are fairly simple and inspired to let us all feel what it is like to run
warriors like Jorja does. Her teams across Alastari may sometimes be taken for
granted so this contest will allow us to appreciate her teams a little better as they
populate the arenas we fight in.
The Rules--
There are no challenges, avoids, bloodfeuds, or tourneys allowed and only one single
use of the Dark Arena is allowed after the contest begins. Win or lose the Dark
Arena is allowed but once, so if you want your warrior dead be sure and throw the
fight!
The contest will last for 12 turns. May I point out that if you use your Dark Arena
fight you will get either 2 points, for winning, or -2, for losing, and ALL fights
count in the scoring. It matters not if you fight a non-contest warrior or a stand-
in; they still count as much as fighting a contest warrior. This will be a test of
basic strategy with a touch of luck added in as well.
If anyone should break the no tourney rule they will lose 5 points for each warrior
entered and those warriors, and any subsequent warriors who replace them in death,
cannot score points! The one exception are the dead tourneys. Should you wish you
may enter your warriors in dead tourneys, since they are not a member of your team,
or even the living, at the time. The warrior may even return to the contest if a
natural opening can be found for it, or you choose to use your Dark Arena fight to
make that opening (if you still have that option left). Break the no DA, challenge,
or avoid rules and you will be DQed as soon as the transgression is discovered. To
keep the contest playing field as level as possible, we will have no messing with
these rules. Of course you may DA the one time, just as a clarification, but the
second time gets you DQed. This also counts if it is found you bring a second team
in for the purpose of making challenges; you will be DQed.
Scoring is as follows:
1 point for winning
1 point for killing (giving 2 in total, 1 for the win and 1 for the kill)
1 point for at least one of your warriors writing a personal (regardless of number of
personals beyond one you still only get one point). Make sure it is written from
one of your team's warriors and not simply the manager entity or you will not get
the point.
-1 point for losing
-1 point for being killed (giving -2 in total, -1 for losing and -1 for being killed)
-5 points and the loss of that warrior's slot for scoring the remainder of the
contest for entering a warrior into a REGULAR tourney (again DEAD tourney is open)
The Prizes:
1st place -- +1 bonus to one warrior on the team, 1 resurrection potion, and 1
favorite knowledge
2nd place -- +1 bonus for one warrior, 1 favorites knowledge
3rd place -- +1 bonus for one warrior
Iron Manager Award -- Run 54 of the possible 60 fights and get a +1 bonus potion
The bonus potions and favorites knowledge must be used on warriors with 5 FE or more
and MUST be used within 2 turns of the end of the contest. The resurrection potion
must be used within 6 months of the end of the contest but may be used on any warrior
regardless of FE. ALL prizes must be used on the contest team, they are NOT
transferable to another team!
