"NO, Valeris!" Havoc roared, brandishing a shortspear. "No! No! No! This ain't
some sort o' fancy club!! It ain't a dagger, neither! Look at this thing!" He shook
it in front of the gladiator's face.
The shortspear was the typical Mordant favorite, a bit over a meter in length.
The bottom two-thirds of the stout wooden handle was tightly wrapped in narrow
leather strips. They were dyed blue and red and woven into an elaborate pattern; its
texture significantly boosted a fighter's grip on the weapon. Its top third ended
with a long, narrow blade that glittered in the morning sun. It was slightly curved
for inflicting delicate, yet potentially lethal, slashes.
"I know ya ain't got the skills, and ya ain't got the coordination to do
anything fancy. Hell, it takes an Aimer, or a veteran Lunger or Slasher with some
serious skills to try for the throat, or the ligaments in the wrists or knees." Havoc
sighed, shook his head, and dropped his eyes momentarily. "Still," he resumed,
looking up into the gladiator's sweat-streaked, anxious face, "ya SHOULD be able to
ram this thing through somebody's chest or gut! Ya got the ability to do THAT,
right?"
Valeris gave a nervous nod, shifting his weight from one foot to the next.
"Yeah," Havoc sighed again and frowned at the shortspear as he held it up in the
sunlight. "Well, we'll find out what ya can do, won't we?"
With a smooth, practiced gesture Havoc tossed the spear over his shoulder as he
turned away and started walking out of the training pit. He paused for a moment,
listening to Valeris fumble with the shortspear behind him. Havoc sighed again and
rolled his eyes into the cloudless blue sky when he heard the weapon drop on the
sand. He turned and gestured to a nearby gladiator that towered over everyone else.
The fighter dipped his 6'6" frame toward Havoc.
"Keep the two newbies in the pit this morning," Havoc growled. "I wanna see the
usual drills and I wanna see them sweat out some o' that breakfast we wasted on 'em."
He started to turn away, then paused to snarl over his shoulder. "And I wanna
see Valeris hit the practice dummy at least ONCE today, ya got me?"
The giant gladiator nodded solemnly as Havoc left the training area and headed
toward the office shack. Once Havoc slammed the door behind him, a collective sigh
seeped out from all the fighters in the pit. The oversized warrior turned to Valeris
with a wicked grin and clapped his huge, rough hands together.
"You heard Havoc, huh? C'mon Valeris! Time to train!"
"Easy, Stella," snickered a female gladiator. Her form was slim and taut with
muscle. She smiled up into Legione Stella's face as she suddenly flourished a
bright, well-polished scimitar. With a wink, Cassiopeia began to swing her scimitar
in a complicated pattern around her body. The other four fighters immediately
stepped back from the wide blade as it wove its way around her, winking and twinkling
in the bright morning light.
Legione Stella laughed and began humming a drinking song, clapping his hands to
give a strong beat.
"Hey Cassie!" Monocerous sputtered. "Take it easy with that thing! Take it
easy! Ain't it dangerous enough in the arena without you slicing around us?!"
Cassiopeia barked out a disdainful laugh and sped up the sparkling blade. She
twisted and spun, becoming one with her sword in an exuberant and masterful
demonstration of skill.
"Go, go, go!" Stella shouted, clapping in time with his words.
"Yeah, sure," snarled Monocerous as he took another nervous step back. "But all
that fancy swordplay didn't help you take down that silly Badger, did it?"
Cassiopeia frowned at Monocerous and started to reply, but the scimitar spun out
of her hand and flew at the face of another female fighter, who ducked in reflex.
The blade narrowly missed her face; instead it barely skipped across her helmeted
head and skittered across the sand.
"Hey, stupid!" Astri yelled. "You want me to stick that up your---"
"GET TO WORK!!" Havoc bellowed from the open office window. The startled
gladiators froze, and then briskly separated, each heading toward a different area of
the training yard. Astri was muttering curses as she left. Cassiopeia ignored her
as she scooped her scimitar off the ground and trotted in the opposite direction.
Havoc growled to himself as he watched the fighters hurry away and busy
themselves with their exercises.
"Ya see what I mean, Kid?" Havoc turned from the window and threw himself down
onto a lumpy, threadbare couch that creaked ominously. "These guys ain't got a
clue!"
Behind a wide, battered and scarred desk a slim youth sorted through tall piles
of papyrus scrolls set amidst multiple bottles of ink (in assorted colors) and
various quills. Havoc shook his head as he grimaced at the cluttered desk.
"How ya can find anything in that mess is a mystery!"
"Everyone has their unique system," murmured the Arcane Kid absently as he
continued rearranging the scrolls and bottles. "Ah, here it is!"
Arcane pulled a small ribbon of paper out from beneath a gilt-edged scroll with
ivory handles. He waved the paper in the air and winked at Havoc, who gave a snort
of derision in reply.
"What's that supposed to be?" Havoc sneered. "A formula for turning dummies
into geniuses?"
"I wish!" Arcane exclaimed, ignoring Havoc's glare. "It's the code key for our
contact in the Arena Master's office."
Havoc grunted and frowned at the floorboards. "We sending both the newbies?"
"No, I don't think that's necessary," Arcane said with a shake of his narrow
head. "I think you know the gladiator I'm considering."
"Yeah," sighed Havoc. "I kinda figured." He shrugged at the Kid and leaned
back; the couch groaned. "D'ya think Stella has enough coin saved up for a decent
bribe?"
Arcane made a soft chuckling sound. "Do you believe that Stella has enough
brains to fake his own death?"
A brief smile touched Havoc's grim face; he shook his head.
"Anyway," Arcane fluttered a slender hand into the air between them. "I wasn't
referring to him."
Havoc cocked his head in the Kid's direction; his puckered brow made the
bristle-top short hairs on his head ripple.
"Valeris?"
Arcane tilted his head and raised his eyebrows in mock surprise. Havoc looked
down at the floor. He seemed to sag a little into the lumpy couch cushions.
"We're sending a lotta meat into that grinder." Havoc scowled at his hands as
he rubbed their calloused surfaces in his lap. "Kid, don'tcha think we can give him
a little more time to, to---"
"We gave him that first round, didn't we?" Arcane shrugged in resignation and
tossed the slip of paper onto the top of a precariously balanced pile of scrolls.
"If he had won that first time, he'd have enough for a bribe."
Havoc was still, staring down blindly at his hands as they pressed together.
The Kid stared at the closest heap of scrolls and pursed his thin lips.
"Havoc, he had the style advantage. The size advantage. Experience was level
zero for both fighters, so that wasn't a factor either. Given his aptitude results
and this poor showing out the gate, what did you expect?"
"Yeah, but hell, NOBODY won this round, Kid."
"Yes, but everyone else has the potential to do much better. Valeris is...
limited... in all the wrong ways. I'm sorry, Havoc."
The two managers stared at everything else in the room except each other. After
a few quiet moments the couch broke the silence with shrill squeals and squeaks as
Havoc rose up from its bulgy cushions. Exhaling deeply, he rearranged the broadsword
at his hip, then closed his eyes and rolled his blocky head in a tight circle as
shrugged his wide shoulders. Loud popping noises crackled in the stagnant silence;
Arcane winced a little.
"O.K.; it's yer call. I'll get on it," muttered Havoc, blinking and snatching
the ribbon of paper off the desk as he passed. He slammed the door behind him when
he left, alerting the fighters in the training yard while knocking askew the piles of
scrolls on the desk inside. The gladiators increased the tempo of their exercises;
Arcane wilted into his chair and stared at the scattered scrolls.
"Let me see some EFFORT!" Havoc yelled as he made his way toward the sand pits.
"Let me see some SKILL!" He paused to watch as Valeris almost dropped his
shortspear. He managed to recover it and turn his fumble into an awkward twirl
instead. Valeris grinned awkwardly at Havoc before turning and lunging at the
practice dummy again. He managed to catch the edge of its armored shoulder as the
dummy spun from its chain. Valeris paused to wipe the sweat off his face and nod
cheerfully at Havoc, who nodded in reply.
"We sure as hell ain't gonna see any MERCY around here!" Havoc rumbled under his
breath.
SPY REPORT
Hail and well met warriors of SHADOWSPIRE! Know me for who I am, Zontani Sharp
Eyes, Spymaster extraordinaire of all Alastari. Former top team WICKED MARTYRS was
unseated this week as THE COMMODORES moved up from 4th ranking to take the top spot
with a 3-2-0 record for the round. Fortune did not smile upon DE'JA KREW this time
out who this turn suffered a fall into 17th position in the wake of a 2-3-0 round.
Warriors--remember that glory waits always around the corner! Witness how this week
MONSTER MANUAL went 4-1-0 to move up 9 in the rankings. My praise to CLUB CUTTHROAT
for their 4-1-0 week this time out. Indeed, it was a skillfully fought round
deserving of notice! VILMAR caught the eye of many in the gladiatorial commission as
he skillfully bested CASSIOPEIA and was awarded 23 points in recognition. In one of
the week's more notable duels, SON OF SEITAN put down MCGREGOR, causing him to lose
19 points of recognition in the process. As is fitting, the most sought after
warrior on the challenge boards this week was none other than Duelmaster HAULIN' OATS
himself. Who here was not present for the title fight this week as MICKEY SLIM
boldly challenged HAULIN' OATS in order to strive for the Duelmasters honors?
Although MICKEY SLIM made a valiant effort, it did not suffice to topple the reign of
victorious HAULIN' OATS. Informants "close" to the city champion have told me that
he never fights without pantyhose on beneath his armor. Watch out!
I have been in deep conclave with my spies who watched all that has recently
transpired. Indeed there is much I would report. My inside sources tell me that the
team to beat in SHADOWSPIRE these days is SOME KINDA HATE. At least, most blades in
town are looking to avoid them. If you didn't look down dark alleys you'd have been
hard pressed to find any of WARMASTERS last week. Busy avoiding SOME KINDA HATE?
Give BLOODY JAKE credit for his courage. Did you note how he challenged BAHBI
despite the 40 point difference in their rankings? Do not the gods reward courage?
BLOODY JAKE it was that claimed victory in the bout, while also rising 25 points in
recognition. I can not but mention with disdain the name of WARDEN KINCHLOE who this
week posted a challenge to a warrior a full 11 points below in the rankings. I
thought WARDEN KINCHLOE showed great skill and promise when he won victory over
OOLONG. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Vendettas. Bloodied blades and broken spears. Indeed the city has seen more
than its fair share of red in recent times. Look no more for HUMBLE PIE in the arena
or on the streets of SHADOWSPIRE. His fate was sealed in the Dark Arena. Inevitable
for one at 13-16-1. This week marked the last days of SISYPHUS who at 4-8-1 was
dispatched to the Dark Arena by the command of ANTHROPOS KRATOS' demanding
management. Perhaps even the strong cannot escape the vagaries of this world. This
week arena veteran CASSIOPEIA was slain, despite a 10-6-0 record. Walk proud,
warriors of DE'JA KREW! By striking down MR. SHHH you have avenged the honor of your
dead. Your virtue is known to all in SHADOWSPIRE. Fate is a fickle mistress. She
showers the miserable with fortune but sets enemies against the victorious. Remember
this!
A thought before I go. Each warrior practices one style, but must not the wise
manager learn the secrets of them all? Ahh, but I can hear the spires of a far off
city calling to me. I must away! Till we meet again, remember: a turtle walks
slow, hides head in a shell, and harms no one; a lion runs to slay its prey.--

Announcing the 1st Veterans Ballot for the Shadowspire Hall of Fame.
Here are the voting rules.
First Ballot: Anyone that has played a turn in Shadowspire during turns 1-200 is
eligible to vote.
One ballot per player. Having multiple teams does not mean more than one ballot.
Give Team name and Manager/Real Name when voting.
Vote for a max of 10 warriors on the ballot.
You CANNOT vote for your own warriors during the first vote.
The top 10 warriors receiving votes will go to the Finals Ballot. (Any ties for
tenth will be also be included in finals.)
NOTE: All warriors that DO NOT receive at least one vote will not be eligible for
future HOF ballots.
The Finals Ballot:
It will be a YES or NO vote by all players that have graduated a warrior from
Shadowpsire in the first 200 turns.
For a warrior to be inducted into Hall of Fame they must receive at least 60% yes
vote.
Ballots are available at the Shadowspire Hall of Fame at Google Drive (Click the
81HOFBALLOT pdf or excel file, the print or download option is at top of page) or
requesting one by diplo to Clan Longbeard(39) in DM 81 or by the email listed below.

1--You can print the pdf ballot and fill out, then diplo to me or ask for my mailing
address by private message to mail directly.
2--You can download the excel sheet and fill out and save, then email ballot as an
attachment. (The excel Ballot is protected, so you can only write in the proper
areas.)
3--You can just email your Team name/Manager/Real Name and the names of the 10
warriors you are voting for to the email to cjcaviness1962 at gmail dot com.
