Death Wager
Havoc had warned him. It was a different sort of crowd at night. He had been
told to ignore everything and everyone outside his immediate surroundings, but
Valeris couldn't help glancing up into the bleachers as he followed the other
fighters through the barbed gate and out onto the circle of sand.
Raucous catcalls chased the gladiators across the sands as they lined up,
shoulder-to-shoulder, facing the Duelmaster. They stood about a meter apart, not
looking directly at each other. There were just four of them enrolled in tonight's
games. The other three were experienced fighters, compared to him: Humble Pie,
Sisyphus, and Drunken Stupor.
All four shifted their weight from foot to foot, awkward and self-conscious,
their weapons and armor clinking and rustling while the official speaker declared
their faults and rationalized their presence. He was loud, as one would expect an
orator should be. Still, he had to use the large megaphone in the upper tier, even
though the night crowd was only about 25% the size of a daytime audience. They were
a noisy bunch.
Once the orator was finished, a pair of gray-robed priests, followers of the
Lady, stepped onto the sands from their private door. Their faces were well hidden
within the shadows of their cavernous hoods. They circled the gladiators while
swinging smoky bronze censers by thick, black ropes of twined hair. Their pace was
slow but steady, keeping rhythm with their solemn chanting in a meaningless tongue.
Valeris stifled a sneeze. The smoke had an acrid smell that irritated his
nostrils and made his eyes water. However, whenever a stray puff of wind temporarily
swept the smoke out of their faces, it left a sweet, cloying smell that stuck to the
gladiators. It reminded Valeris of a cat that he used to own--until it sprayed his
leather armor. He regretted killing that cat; it had been a good ratter. And
anyway, the smell never did come out...
After circling the fighters three times, the priests stood between the
Duelmaster and the gladiators and raised their censors towards the bleachers. They
shook the censors with a shout, which most of the audience echoed. Valeris, caught
off-guard, shuddered. The echoes from the stands were still reverberating against
the stars as the priests, now muttering as if to themselves, half stalked, half
swaggered across the arena and disappeared through their small, iron door in the wall
beneath the Duelmaster's chair.
Valeris caught a glint of light out of the corner of his left eye. Mobs of
orcish-looking things gathered in the bleachers above the gladiators' iron gate began
yowling and crooning to themselves. They waved pewter flagons and thick-glassed
bottles; some gnashed their fangs and clicked their long nails together, staring at
the gladiators through half-drunken leers and undecipherable chittering. Their
intense scrutiny brought an uncomfortable stray thought to mind. Sometimes, it was
rumored, unwanted gladiators were sold as mere meat to some of the more brutish races
of Alistari. Valeris murmured a quick, devout prayer and hoped that rumor was just
an urban myth!
A few shrill screams punctuated the general caterwauling, but it was hard to
decide if they were cries of pleasure or pain. He indulged his curiosity, squinting
against the torchlight as he tried to pierce the shadows above them. Despite the
smaller audience, it seemed to Valeris that there were more women at the night games.
Most of them were half-naked and loudly vulgar, spewing profanity and tawdry terms
indiscriminately around them. Many seemed only barely human.
Valeris swallowed hard and tried to get the residual smoky smell and taste out
of mouth. If he dwelled on it, he realized he could probably work up a decent vomit.
NO! He shook his head irritably and tried to focus. That's what Havoc had told him,
over and over. Focus!
"Valeris, I know this'll be tough, but ya gotta stay focused! Ya gotta do yer
part, do ya HEAR ME??!! Ya gotta go longer than a minute, and ya gotta get to the
middle of the arena! LISTEN! Ya wanna live through this?? Don't worry 'bout being
sick, or scared, or tired, or nuthin'! The Kid and I have got the details covered,
understand? Just stay FOCUSED and do what I say!"
Valeris grit his teeth and fought to swallow another rush of bile as it boiled
up from his gut and into his mouth. At the trumpet sound he turned, in unison with
the other three fighters, and stoically, stiffly, paced around the arena as the
opening ceremony came to its climax. The smell of wet sand, freshly raked and
sprinkled with lemon juice, mingled with the smells from the tar-streaked torches,
the lingering incense of the priests, and the bestial odors from the crowd.
Valeris shivered and tried to spit the sour, acidic taste from his mouth. He
just had to live through the first minute! He had to fight his way to the middle of
the sands and stay there! He had to trust Havoc...
A slight chill swept over his sweaty body as a damp breeze whisked in from the
harbor. At any other time it would be a welcome break from the glaring heat of the
day, but now it seemed to freeze his blood.
Occasionally an empty bottle or two was cast from the stands. They landed near
the gladiators' feet, followed by raucous laughter. The bright torches, on their tall
poles along the periphery of the sands, hid the culprits from Valeris's eyes, but he
didn't worry too much. The last time a gladiator had been struck by a fan, the
Duelmaster himself had given a command and a half-dozen bowmen had perforated the
overzealous gladiator aficionado in an instant. This was well known and, though not a
recent event, it was, apparently, not forgotten.
Ragged, half-feral children scampered out onto the sands to retrieve the bottles
and other debris as the gladiators ducked through the low door. The barbed gate
clattered shut behind them; they took their seats on sturdy benches inside a cramped
room. Other than a sputtering oil lamp on a pedestal in the corner, the only light
came from the guttering torches outside the bars of the gate.
They heard the crowd gasp as a blinding, garish light was thrown into their
small room, causing the fighters to narrow their eyes and blink. A bright ball of
flame had appeared in the middle of the arena; it flickered away after a few seconds,
leaving motes of light swimming before everyone's eyes. The Dark Arena Champion,
Wurm Kin, came into view, alone on the sands. He brandished his weapon above his
head.
The gate opened up as the audience howled and gave a thunderous applause.
Humble Pie rose obediently in response to a tired old troll who gestured with a hook
where his left hand had once been. The troll's eyes were yellow and the swarthy skin
of his face was partially hidden by scars and a perpetual grimace of distaste.
Humble Pie left the undersized cell and strode purposefully toward the Duelmaster's
chair; the troll chuckled and slammed the gate back into place. He didn't bother to
lock it.
The veteran gladiator didn't look back; he simply stared up at the Duelmaster,
Haulin' Oats, as he strode toward Wurm Kin and bared his steel. Ignoring his
opponent, Humble Pie took his stance where they had all been standing just a few
minutes earlier, and sketched a sign in the air before him. The DM barely nodded an
acknowledgement.
'Well', Valeris thought, 'how tough is THAT?! Your own teammate gets to preside
over your death match!!' He wondered what the rest of Otto's Diner thought about
that, but there wasn't much time to dwell on it. Wurm Kin was fast and ruthless.
Humble Pie toppled to the sands in under a minute, after first being flung back
off his feet by the force of his opponent's blows. The spectators loved it, of
course. There were screams from men and women and everything in-between, a howling
chorus of bloodlust that shook the small room and caused Valeris to shiver just a
bit.
'It's that night air off from the harbor,' he told himself. 'I hope I don't come
down with a virus or anything.'
Wurm Kin struck a pose for the fans as a Ratani and a Half-Elf, barefooted and
their tunics streaked with blood, ran out to retrieve the remains of Humble Pie. Two
Golems wielding enormous bronze rakes shambled behind them. They quickly turned and
spread the bloody sands until there was hardly a trace of bloodshed. As they
furiously attacked the sands, the sounds of the audience changed from a wild
boisterousness to a general mutter as money changed hands and a new flurry of debate
and wagering took place.
"Ya gotta go longer than a minute, and ya gotta get to the middle of the arena!"
Havoc had been emphatic. Valeris tried to focus on that as Sisyphus rose and stiffly
made his way past the old troll. Drunken Stupor was actually snoring, slumped back
against the wall.
Sisyphus was another veteran; he had over a dozen fights under his belt. Unlike
HP, he lacked an inscrutable expression. His face was a wet sheen of sweat; his eyes
were darting in all directions as he plodded in front of Valeris, who stood by the
gate, too nervous to sit any longer.
Sisyphus trudged toward the center of the arena in a fatalistic fashion; his
shoulders bowed forward while his weapon hung, lifeless and limp, in his hands.
SpyMaster wasn't the type to flaunt a grand entrance. His arrival had been so
low key that he caught Valeris, and most of the spectators, by surprise. He simply
stood in the center, waiting for his opponent with a nonchalant air of disdain. A
mask of fine wire mesh hid his face, but his laughter was loud enough, and
undisguised.
Sisyphus made the obligatory salute to the Duelmaster, then took his pose and
waited for the bell. When it rang, SpyMaster was already moving toward his opponent.
Sisyphus parried and dodged while the spectators booed and jeered. SpyMaster
was using his epee with a delicate skill that highlighted his smooth lunges and quick
recoveries. Occasional spurts of red erupted through Sisyphus' ringmail as he tried
frantically to dodge, parry, and keep his distance from his foe.
Valeris thought it was odd, though, that Sisyphus never backed up in a straight
line. Even though he sometimes suffered a blow or a cut because of it, Sisyphus kept
circling left and right. He never moved backward (or forward) but always left or
right, shuffling madly and kicking up sand while the fans stomped their feet in the
bleachers.
The dull chimes signaling the second minute hurled a metallic clatter into the
night air. A few fans whistled and cheered in response.
'Probably some arena bums got lucky on a long shot bet', thought Valeris
somberly. 'I wonder if anyone will bother to bet on me.'
At the sound of the chimes, SpyMaster began a genuine effort to exert himself to
his limit. His breath hissed through the wire mesh across his face as he shifted
back and forth, building up a crescendo of jabs and lunges that Sisyphus soon found
impossible to avoid. Suddenly, SpyMaster charged forward, arcing his epee in a flash
of deadly light that ended abruptly in Sisyphus' throat!
Sisyphus froze for two long seconds, then his body crumpled onto the sands. The
arena audience, briefly spellbound by the action, began a cacophony of hellish
delight that shook the soul within Valeris. He stared at the still form in surprise.
Sisyphus had been doing well up until the second minute chimes...
If Valeris hadn't been staring intently at the body, he wouldn't have caught it.
He saw a brief, surging glow of dark purplish light that seemed to rise from the sand
and encapsulate the body of Sisyphus. It was there a scant moment, and then it
dissolved back into the sands below!
Valeris trembled. "Ya gotta go longer than a minute, and ya gotta get to the
middle of the arena!" Havoc had bellowed. "The Kid and I have got the details
covered, understand?" He had been most emphatic.
Valeris remembered the joke: If things ever got too tough out on the sands,
there was always that secret escape route, that trapdoor in the middle of the arena,
the one next to the can of striped paint...
"LISTEN!" Havoc had roared, waving his knotty fist in Valeris' face. "Ya wanna
live through this?? Don't worry 'bout being sick, or scared, or tired, or nuthin'!
Just stay FOCUSED and do what I say!"
This time the old troll offered a sinister sneer to go with his hook gesture.
Valeris swallowed another glob of thick saliva as his stomach danced and the body of
Sisyphus was dragged off the sands. The corpse looked empty, a mere shell... Valeris
looked back into the dim cell. Drunken Stupor, curled up against the wall, continued
to snore. The old troll stepped forward and kicked the bench out from under him,
knocking the sleeping gladiator onto the floor, startling him. Drunken Stupor
struggled to get his blade free of its sheath; the troll laughed and kicked him back
against the wall.
Valeris, ignoring them both, walked through the gate. The Golems were raking
and scraping away at the sand. On the far side of the arena, a burly figure in a
suit of scalemail stood waiting for him under the Duelmaster's sharp gaze. He drew a
longsword from its sheath and shrugged a medium shield onto his left arm. The orator
announced him as Dark Champion, a Harkeny Parry-Lunger.
The crowd bellowed and clapped as Valeris neared his opponent. He muttered a
prayer and checked the straps on his leather armor, and then twisted hard on the grip
of his shortspear to get the sweat off his hands.
Two minutes? Stay in the middle of the arena? Stay focused? Hell, he could do
that!!
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Dear Shadowspire,
The sky is falling! Have I been away too long? The girl who used to be a
Maneater (some men) is bigger than both of us. She'll never let me go, but sometimes
a mind changes. Don't leave me alone with her. <whew> She's gone. The woman comes
and goes. It doesn't matter anymore, because at pleasure beach, every day will be
like a holiday. Dreamtime! Let me be the one to Thank you for...for you. Someone
like you. Don't change.
Time won't pass me by. I can dream about you. This possession obsession is
heavy rain when the morning comes. Wait for me. Hold on to me. After the dance.
Promise ain't enough. Do it for love. Soul love. One on one. I'm a man on a
mission, and I'm in a Philly mood. Getaway car!
Forever for you....

SPY REPORT
I was going on vacation, see? Surf, sun... But what do those bums say? "Hit
the road, Debby Tonte. SHADOWSPIRE needs a spyreport." Oh, well. I couldn't
believe it. Did CLUB CUTTHROAT really go up by 11? If only those guys didn't have
so may missing teeth... Gross! Uncool, OTTO'S DINER. I mean 0-5-0 is bad. Will
they will be allowed to fight? I say use 'em for training practice! One team
deserves special mention 'cause they moved up 1 after going 4-1-0. Keep it up,
WICKED MARTYRS! MVP award for AXEL VON SPIRE? DRAGONBANE GUILD's proud of him after
beating MICKEY SLIM and getting 27 points. Talk about yer big time losers! MICKEY
SLIM got smashed by AXEL VON SPIRE, and lost 21 points! PSEUDO DRAGON thinks his
16-20-1 and studly character is good enough to face up to the Duelmaster. Any bets?
And I was just getting used to the ex-Duelmaster's habit of...(!) Oh well, welcome
PSEUDO DRAGON. Aren't MONSTER MANUAL proud. (Oh, my.) Who was the wiseguy that said
SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Welcome Wench? Don't look at
me!
So just why would someone becomes a warrior anyway? It can't be for these
really neat Spyreports can it? SOME KINDA HATE was the most avoided team. Is a
107-91-10 record really that scary? I don't know what CLUB CUTTHROAT's been doing.
They certainly haven't been accepting many fights from SOME KINDA HATE, that's fer
sher. Like, is GNOMETRADAMUS popular, or what? He was challenged the most in all of
SHADOWSPIRE! He's got a 8-4-0, is that good? I'm not so sure BOOGER STANG knew all
the facts when he challenged BLAGO GRUNGE of DRAGONBANE GUILD. I saw BOOGER STANG
stumbling and dribbling at The Welcome Wench last week... BOOGER STANG lost to BLAGO
GRUNGE, but he got 7 points. BLAGO GRUNGE won, and got 3 points. I don't get it.
MR. SHHH is being unfair. He's challenged down 20 against SOLON. I don't know why
they let this stuff go on. (I'd better shut up) A lotta people lost a lotta money in
a lotta bets, when MR. SHHH challenged SOLON, 20 points below and lost! Send 'im to
the Dark Arena! CALIGULA must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair fights.
He challenged HOMINID. 9 is a big difference. (Well, that's what they tell me.) I
thought CALIGULA showed great skill and promise when he defeated HOMINID. All right,
so I slept through it! Big deal!
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Hey you guys, don't you think your families would like to hear from you?
Write! (Or have someone write for you.)
I really didn't, you know, study when I was a kid. Who would've guessed I'd be
a famous Spyreporter? I know how much you like reading this stuff, but I really
should stop. Remember you guys, ease up sometimes! Chill out! Later, Debby Tonte

PERSONAL ADS
Kid Arcane -- We feel bad about that, but Vanek has been passing those bogus coupons
all over town. Remember--genuine coupons are always marked with authentic Otto's
Diner grease spots. -- Otto X
Bahbi -- Baby, I'd love to give you a shot at the throne, but since you fell out of
range, I can't go for that. No can do. -- Haulin' Oats
Dirty White Mother -- Yeah, do it again! Damn golems. -- Osirus
All -- Good to see the old guilds return for the turn 200 celebration. -- Visionist
Djeree the Djerk -- Had me worried for a minute. -- Vilmar
Allezles Keus -- Thank the commission for the matchup. <grin> -- Pavil
Agrippa -- If I had learned like that when I lose I would have been gone from here
long ago. -- Osirus
Cassiopeia and Search the Sky -- Sorry, her death was not intended. I await your
revenge. -- Vilmar
Dave Lebeis -- Good workout, wish I had won though. -- Pavil
Embezzling Scribe -- Who put PEDs in your Wheaties!?! -- Ulford
Mordant Deserter -- Thanks for the easy win and tutoring. -- Whitt
All -- I failed to mention in the HOF Veterans all arena ad that the deadline for the
HOF Veterans voting is 11/11/14 or the due date for turn 205. Please take 5-10
minutes and vote. If you have an questions please contact me via email or diplo. --
Visionist
Otis -- Come on back! The water is warm (around Otto's warriors, when they swim),
the air is clean (when you aren't down wind from the Warmasters), and the more
competition the better (because these guys in the lower ranks are stingy with the
skills!). -- DeGotti
Gnometradamus predictions and observations;
1) The recent increases in the Gladiatorial Commission raids and consequent shutting
down of some guild halls for PEDs and the return of Search the Sky are actually
connected.
2) Otto's Diner will get at least 45 demerits from the Health District on the next
inspection, but will remain open anyway.
3) Havoc is gearing up to launch a petition to eliminate the "power styles" from the
warrior selection process to make things an even playing field!
4) Hombre was late with his PAs because he was upgrading from a Commodore to a new
Apple Phablet!
That is all at this time -- Gnometradamus
War Machine -- Did Crazy Jay donate blood before our fight? He didn't seem to bleed
"that" much! -- Deryn
Vilmar -- That was most unfortunate. In order to avoid killing, I believe my
unaggressive strategy helped cause Cassiopeia's death. Well... she was a little
crazy sometimes, anyway. Let's see how this bloodfeud works out. -- Kid Arcane
Shamino -- Watching Cassie die was just, just... *sigh* It took the heart out of me.
And was that victory jig really necessary? -- Legione Stella
Ketos -- I think that term "overpowered" was a trifle liberal. Time to change the
numbers once again! -- Monoceros
Everyone -- I don't know why Astri didn't run last time. I'm fairly certain I placed
her sheet in the envelope with the rest of 'em. She's supposed to run in this next
turn. I didn't mean to hold anyone back, so if there was a challenge that fell short
because of her absence, I apologize. It was unintentional. -- Kid Arcane
