Aftermath

"This just sucks rocks!" Astri slammed her smallish fist on the rugged round
tabletop. Her neck was bent down until her nose almost touched the rough wood. "I
was ready to roll right over Pavil, too!" she moaned.
"I can't believe it," muttered Legione. "I STILL can't believe it!"
"I didn't know that there was so MUCH paperwork involved," Monoceros frowned.
"Believe it," Havoc growled. "It ain't like I planned it, but it happened and we
gotta make the best of it."
"Do we?" Gargantia toyed absently with her empty flagon. "I don't know if we
can make anything good out of this at all."
"Wow. I thought the kids down in the Dragonbane hall hated me," Monoceros
giggled nervously. "Now they must hate us all!"
"Ya think?" Gargantia shook her head.
"Monoceros, yer just a yellow punk!" Havoc roared. "Who knows what Dragonbane is
thinkin'? Who CARES?!"
"Probably Visionist cares," Astri sighed without lifting her head.
Havoc snorted. "We got bigger fish to fry. For one thing, yer all goin' to be
fightin' unknowns next turn."
"Unknowns?" Legione frowned. "What do you mean?"
"We missed a turn," Monoceros shrugged. "So we lose our right to challenge this
next turn. Right?"
"We're not challenging anyone next turn, that's for sure," nodded Gargantia. "I
guess we're going to have to just trust to our luck and hope we draw decent
matchups."
"We're in trouble, aren't we?" Maelstrom asked nobody in particular.
"We're a bit past that," Gargantia replied.
"We haven't had 'good' luck in a coon's age," sighed Astri, dropping her
forehead to the table with thud. "I'm as good as dead."
Maelstrom knit his thick brows together. "What's a coon?"
"Hey, I'm the one that has to face a bloodfeud," Monoceros grimaced. "If
anyone's likely to die next turn, it'll be me."
"Read about it in a picture book the Kid lent me," Astri responded. She was
speaking into the wood; her lips just a few centimeters from the table. At least,
Havoc noticed, she had closed her eyes.
"Do you still have that book?" Maelstrom asked. "I'd like to see it."
"If that's the only way to stop your incessant whining about this bloodfeud,
then by all means, die!" Gargantia scowled.
"Hey, is that what you call 'team spirit'?" cried Monoceros.
"It's what I call 'guts'; why don't you try growing some?" she replied.
"Calm down, Gargantia! And the rest of ya--cut it out!" Havoc kicked the table
leg, jarring Astri's face a bit. He doubted it would leave much of a bruise. He
took a quick, sliding step forward, the explosive sort of step that dramatically
increased the kinetic energy of his strikes. Havoc snapped his arm forward, smacking
the back of Gargantia's hand with the edge of his palm and sending her flagon flying
across the room.
The team froze as the tall cup bounced and rolled. Every eye was on it until it
stopped, and then, slowly, inevitably, all eyes found their way to Havoc's. He held
them for a moment longer, then turned away and stalked toward his office.
"If I were you guys," he gritted, "I'd be busy practicin' instead o'
complainin'." He slammed the door behind him as he quit the hall.
The fighters avoided eye contact with each other. Gargantia rubbed her hand,
flexing it and grimacing, but not uttering a sound. After 20 seconds or so they
began to fidget. One by one they left the hall; Monoceros was the first to leave.
Of course, it took a few minutes for Maelstrom to realize that he was the only
one remaining. Then, he left too.

DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.

You know the saying goes, "If you want to be the man, You must beat the Man."
Now I don't know how much of a man Vilmar was, but he was briefly your Duelmaster and
beat him I did. And with very little effort. I guess the other old saying is true
too, "The first cut's the deepest," and it only took one cut.
I'm sure the question on most of your tiny minds is who is gonna get a shot at
the champ. I don't think anyone is worthy. Beordin has been slogging around the
arena for so long everyone in the arena uses his fights for a bathroom break. Mickey
Slim? Geron? I think those new-comers haven't quite earned it... Jake, I reckon,
will be busy wiping the blood off, and the Dragonbane trio is a second rate outfit at
best.
That just leaves A loon, A Seasmstress and a Jubilex... Hmmm, I think I've heard
that joke...

SPY REPORT

Greetings, Warriors of SHADOWSPIRE. Allow this humble servant Novgorodny Vir to
give you a respite from the fights in the form of this Spyreport. Nothing is certain
in SHADOWSPIRE, with changing loyalties, changing Duelmasters. Write this down: new
top team--WARMASTERS. Good things come to those who fight well, as WARMASTERS can
attest, moving up by 7. MONSTER MANUAL had cause to celebrate, after BLINK DOG got
16 points by beating RING LARDNER. A certain someone should cut down on the drinking
and practice more, after losing 13 points to GARGANTIA. (Discrete enough, CREDITS?)
Like a flirtacious debutante, SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster SLIM CHANCE found itself the
creature of the hour, being "invited to dance" 6 times! The arena was more crowded
than usual this time, as MCGREGOR faced SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster. In SHADOWSPIRE,
nothing is permanent (except Death), and we find ourselves a new Duelmaster,
MCGREGOR. Word has it one team in SHADOWSPIRE is using psychics to predict wins.
They lead a charmed life!
A Zenmaster once told me, 'Does not the spinning wheel turn? And do not the
little birds cry out?' Any ideas? Perhaps the warriors of MONSTER MANUAL should
take up some hobbies, as they are the most avoided team... Like a pup with its tail
between its legs, DRAGONBANE GUILD scurried away from MONSTER MANUAL. Oh, the shame!
Take heed SHADOWSPIRE, of the unprincipled action of THE SEAMSTRESS. By challenging
SON OF SEITAN, 17 points below her, THE SEAMSTRESS besmirches the noble art of
dueling. THE SEAMSTRESS killed SON OF SEITAN. The whole thing leaves a bitter
memory. Place your bets! DIRTY WHITE MOTHER is the long shot of the week: they
challenged GERON, up by 35. Like a fly challenging a flyswatter, DIRTY WHITE MOTHER
challenged GERON, and got squashed. We sadists got a kick out it! (as did DIRTY
WHITE MOTHER)
Ah, the duel! The roar of the oppenent, the smell of the crowd! You've heard
about SON OF SEITAN of OTTO'S DINER. Death plays no favorites, and neither do I.
What was a 12-11-2 doing on the fields in the first place? I hear ULFORD of CLAN
LONGBEARD tired of the battles and was thinking of becoming a priest. 29 PALMS of
ABOMINATION saved him the effort of getting references. Ask not a spymaster for
counsel, for he will pontificate long after you have fallen into an unconscious
stupor.
Leave me now, you base fools! More important duties call me. SHADOWSPIRE, I
leave you now. The Duelmaster has agreed to foot my bill at The Swinging Aardvark.
