SYP Special Report
Well, what do you know, it's an SYP Special Report! We have not written one for a
while, so we thought the perfect re-introduction to Shadowspire would be our most
controversial topic: Best Warriors by Style!
Arguments are sure to ensue and we welcome your comments, derision, and emotional
charged cries that will be dismissed and mocked. If you want fair and balanced, start
your own newspaper! Our method is fool-proof! You win more than your competitors and
you make the nice list. You lose and you get slapped on the naughty one, which may
debut in the cycles to come!
Happy Dueling!
Now onto the best warriors that Shadowspire has sent to the Isle and immortality.

So what did we learn? Le Pentarque runs too many Bashers? The top Rippers have an
extremely high win percentage compared to some of the other styles?
La Pentarchie (5) leads the pack with the most top warriors. Clan Longbeard (3), Cult
of Bacchus (3), Darque Ages (3), and Otto's Diner (3) all occupy the number two spot.
Literate Loons (2) and Dragonbane Guild (2) take third place overall.
Next cycle, instead of enjoying tasting the cream that has risen to the top, we will
scrape the bottom of the proverbial latte cup. We are going to tackle the worst
warriors (by record) to graduate from Shadowspire. We hope to see you here!
Until Next Time,
Phineas Rannulf

"Requiem for the Wreckless"
The Kid heaved a deep sigh into the hushed, humid night. His eyes roved
aimlessly around the courtyard as he uncrossed and recrossed his legs, restlessly
shifting his weight in the large bamboo lounge chair. He kept glancing at the
scattered chairs and tables, the empty pitchers, glasses, and mugs, and the large
glass lamps mounted regularly around the inner wall, bathing the area in a soft light.
With his arm draped in a languid fashion across his knee, Arcane's slender fingers
wove a pattern in the air that caused a bright gold coin to twirl back and forth
between them.
A stout, stern-faced, barrel-chested man padded noiselessly into the courtyard
via the barracks door and stood a dozen paces away, feet spread and arms crossed.
Dozens of small scars, thin and whitened with age, mottled his forearms and the back
of his hands.
"Ya gotta show me how to do that trick sometime," Havoc muttered in a gravel
monotone.
The Kid snorted gently; a small smile briefly touched his thin lips. "Are you
talking about the coin manipulation, or is this about breaking the news to our
fighters?"
Havoc snorted in turn; he sneered and shook his square head in disgust. "What's
on yer mind, Kid? Feelin' guilty? Feelin' sad?" He snorted again. "Save it for the
troops; I know better!"
The coin stopped dancing between the Kid's fingers; it caught the flickering
lamplight and drew Havoc's unwilling eyes for a moment before it disappeared. He
blinked and then scowled into the Kid's narrow, expressionless face.
"I don't know what you want from me," Arcane murmured. "We paid the fees and
gave her a good send-off. We packed up her things and sent them, with her ashes, to
her family--or at least, the address she gave us in Osksi. I even threw a little coin
into her trunk..." Arcane signed again. "Then we introduced the new fighters. What
more do you want?"
The muscles in his thick forearms wriggled and twisted as Havoc made a short,
guttural sound. Inhaling deeply, he tilted and rolled his head in a brief circle,
causing the vertebrae in his neck to pop and crack.
"Ugh!" The Kid frowned. "You know I hate it when you do that!"
"Yeah," exhaled Havoc. "And I hate it when you throw away perfectly good
gladiators."
"Hey!" With one fluid movement Arcane stood, his slender frame taught, his eyes
glowing fierce and hot. "Challenging Caligula was HER choice, not mine!"
Havoc lowered his head, glaring up through his bushy eyebrows. "Ya coulda
stopped her!"
"I tried!"
"HA!"
The Kid closed the distance between them with a few gliding steps. His eyes
shone with a tawdry brilliance, dazzling Havoc for a moment.
"I know you don't want to believe me, but it's true," Arcane asserted. "Her
logic was solid; I had to allow her to make the challenge."
Havoc growled in the threatening manner any animal would use when it's scared and
angry at the same time. "Logic? It ain't logic that makes a fighter challenge anyone
with that much experience!"
The Kid stared into Havoc's narrowed eyes for a few moments more, then he stepped
back and turned away. He began to circulate amongst the tables in the courtyard; he
walked slowly as he talked--almost as if to himself.
"I couldn't get away from her logic; I couldn't deny the facts." The Kid
shrugged. "Vanek is a self-righteous, self-justifying jerk, but his type is not
uncommon in the fight game. His fighters have lots of experience--but most of that
experience comes from challenging lower-ranked fighters. That's why they still
haven't graduated. That's why Warmasters has such a high win/loss average."
Havoc grunted and frowned at the Kid's back. "So tell me somethin' I DON'T
know."
Arcane paused and threw a brief look over his shoulder before resuming his slow,
purposeless glide through the courtyard. "Vanek had many veteran fighters to choose
from when he made his bloodfeud challenge. He chose his highest-ranked fighter, the
Duelmaster, in fact."
"I was there."
"Well, you saw that fight. It should have been obvious to you that he was really
trying to kill Gargantia." Arcane paused and stared at one of the lamps for a few
moments before shaking his head and resuming his haphazard wandering. "We both agreed
that Vanek would most likely continue to use the Duelmaster so as to assure his hold
on the throne. Gargantia's strategy was based on this premise."
"Then why did she challenge Caligula?" Havoc demanded.
"A better question would be: Why didn't Vanek's bloodfeud challenge supercede
hers?"
"Okay, okay -- but WHY? Why challenge up?" Havoc shook his blocky head. "It
don't make no sense."
"If she was going to be bloodfeuded, she wanted to take the offensive. Why not?"
Arcane allowed a small smile to drift across his face for a second. "It was in her
nature to attack her opponent, not wait to be attacked. What else did you expect?"
Havoc stared down at the flagstones as Arcane slowly wound his way back to the
chair. He didn't resume his seat; he stood and waited patiently while Havoc
processed.
"So--wait a minute. She was countin' on the Duelmaster to bloodfeud her again?"
Arcane nodded. That was what we both expected. Given Vanek's history and
habits, it's the logical conclusion."
"So..." Havoc scratched the top of his scalp and frowned at the Kid. "I still
don't get it."
"We compromised; it's as simple as that." Arcane half turned away, then paused.
"If the DM challenged her, she was going to attempt to counter and gain the
initiative. Given her damage rating, it would only take one good hit to turn tings
around." He shook his head. "But Gargantia was angry; her blood was up. Nero's
death was unplanned and Vanek must have known this, but his response was a bit over
the top. So she wanted to try to kill another of his fighters before she went down."
Havoc chuckled mirthlessly. "Yeah," he muttered. "That sounds like her."
"If," Arcane continued," Vanek made a bloodfeud challenge that turn, it should
have superceded Gargantia's challenge. I was counting on that when I agreed to let
her make her bid for glory." The Kid shugged and rubbed his hands together. "If the
DM had continued the bloodfeud, who knows how it would have worked out?"
"So ya think Vanek decided to drop it?"
"I think he was a little unsure of himself," Arcane smirked. "Gargantia was a
very decisive, hard-hitting Striker with a good record... and that fight with the DM
wasn't as overwhelmingly lopsided as the newsletter reported. I think he decided not
to push his luck."
"Ha!" A broad smile spread across Havoc's face. "That didn't work out so well
for him!"
Arcane waved a hand gracefully in the aid. "Who knows? Who cares?" He turned to
face Havoc fully. "The important thing now is that we move forward. We have three
new fighters; their overviews are solid but none seems particularly impressive.."
"Ya got that right," growled Havoc.
"And we're using styles we don't have a lot of experience with," nodded Arcane.
"So what do we do about that?"
"So you concentrate on traning them, and I'll focus on doing some research." A
low whistle seemed to emanate from The Kid, and it began to glow in volume. "There
are manay managers who have a great deal of maexperience with these styles. I'll pick
their brains and read their essays and see what I can come up with."
"You do that," muttered Havoc as the Kid dissolved into a high-pitched shriek of
blue-white light. "Go make yerself useful."
SPY REPORT
Oh, hi. Its just little 'ol Debby Tonte. Thought I'd check out SHADOWSPIRE to
see what's new. Like, NBA LEGENDS had to be so embarrassed when they got kicked off
#1 spot by SOME KINDA HATE! Way to go SOME KINDA HATE! I couldn't believe it. Did
FURRY FURY really go up by 11? If only those guys didn't have so may missing
teeth... Gross! I don't wanna hurt anybody's feelings or anything, but NBA LEGENDS
really goofed with their 1-4-0. One team deserves special mention 'cause they moved
up 2 after going 5-0-0. Keep it up, DRAGONBANE GUILD! Oh, wow, like the Duelmaster
must be the most popular guy in all SHADOWSPIRE. He got the most challenges. (But
what about proposals?) Don't you think the Duelmaster is being unfair? I think TROG
should let AGRIPPA be Duelmaster for a while, without fighting about it. Who was the
wiseguy that said SHADOWSPIRE's Duelmaster was paying for drinks at The Warty Toad?
Don't look at me!
Look, you guys stick to fighting, all right? CULT OF BACCHUS was the most
avoided team. Is a 387-303-11 record really that scary? Is there some deep dark
secret why DRAGONBANE GUILD's been avoiding CULT OF BACCHUS so much? Or is it just
that they're too scared? Ooh! Did GUY DE CHAULIC really know what he was doing when
he challenged DJEREE THE DJERK? A 13-8-1 speaks volumes. (Zontoni said that. I
don't know what it means.) GUY DE CHAULIC was so studly out there in the sands!
Beating DJEREE THE DJERK and getting 27 points. DARQUE AGES must be proud, for sure!
See if I ever talk to RYK THE DRAGON again! HOLLOWSOUL was so low when He challenged
he. Hhmph! Is this how BIG LAKE OUTCASTS advances, by having their members (RYK THE
DRAGON) fight people that are really below them (HOLLOWSOUL)? People were asking me
did APSHAI REALLY challenge ASTRID? (all right, maybe they didn't, but it sounded
good!) It wasn't a spectacular fight, or anything, but ASTRID wants me to write about
it since she was overcame by APSHAI. Satisfied? ALCESTE must not be a good enough
fighter to get in fair fights. It challenged DUCK OF DEATH. 15 is a big difference.
(Well, that's what they tell me.) I thought ALCESTE showed great skill and promise
when it bested DUCK OF DEATH. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
Man, all these warriors dying and killing each other! Don't you guys ever give
it a break? Like, who is this guy??? LIGDISH BANG gets sent to the Dark Arena,
battles SHEWISH GIANT, and returns to tell of it!!! I bet PHILANTHROPISTS manager is
surprised! Hey! Quit laughing! Just because SAFFORD had 9-7-0 was no reason for
PHILANTHROPISTS to send him to the Dark Arena! Stop it! Pinch me, I must be
dreaming!!! JEX returns from the Dark Arena, maybe a "little upset" at his
PHILANTHROPISTS teammates... Like, who is this guy??? SAM SWORD gets sent to the
Dark Arena, battles DARK CHAMPION, and returns to tell of it!!! I bet
PHILANTHROPISTS manager is surprised! Like was that some Bloodfeud, or what? (BEAR
NAKED vs. SIMO HAYHA, that is.) So SEARCH THE SKY has one more turn to Bloodfeud
WARMASTERS' CALIGULA. Big deal. GARGANTIA's dead. What's the point? Ya just gotta
go on. Don't look back... DIRTY WHITE MOTHER bloodfeuded (is that a word?) SAILOR
JEFFRY for revenge over some guy's bad fortune. Was it really worth it? WICKED ALL
REDD really fought hard against LARRY BIRD. That'll teach NBA LEGENDS not to go and
kill any of INEBRIATION's guys again, huh! CALIGULA bloodfeuded (is that a word?)
ZATHOG for revenge over some guy's bad fortune. Was it really worth it? What if
they had a fight and nobody showed up? I'd be out of a job, that's what!!!
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I gotta leave. SHADOWSPIRE is like such a dump, and you guys smell too much!
I had a fun time, see you later-- Debby Tonte

PERSONAL ADS
Shadowspire -- We know that everyone wants to fight a legend, but our 5-0-1 record
against your five challenges last turn should cause you to reconsider. -- NBA LEgends
Inebriation -- Well, hopefully the new roll-ups are good. At least you can say that
your warriors were killed by living legends. We await your bloodfeuds. -- Magic and
Larry Bird
Sam Sword -- Sorry sweetie, I'm not your secret admirer. -- Jefe
Ayla -- I hate when I lose my weapon on the way to the arena... punching
shields=painful. Check. -- Pheare
Snotty -- I win, you get three skills to my one... you're welcome. Heh. -- Raynor
Quark -- You're pretty good, but luck runs out. -- Vilbradr
Zenith -- I've got to stop letting women mess with my head. -- Fenn
Lady Mordraith -- Check it out you bonehead, while you leap into the forums bragging
about your recent turn's win/loss record, which was earned by down-challenging winless
initiates, I sit on the throne with a half wit that'll never achieve a single master
rating in anything. However, he got there by challenging 'UP.' With risk comes
reward, skirt wearer. -- Crambus, title holder
Vanek -- Tell me, tough guy, when do I make that 'hit list' of yours? When must I
start fearing that pounding you've threatened on me? Two turns ago I busted you up
with a 32pt up-challenge and last turn I took the title from you. I guess I've been
taught a valuable lesson. -- Crambus, your champ
Otis the tourney prepper -- Did you get your Shadowspire pansies all prepped up and
ready to roll for the upcoming FTF yet? Just curious, mastermind. Your lengthy P.A.
to Den last turn could've been summed up in one simple sentence: Hi everyone, I'm Otis
and I wear a size 6 hat. -- Crambus
Den -- Isn't the number 4 just magical? I'm not sure how my PA was flagged as being
NIATOLI ISLAND worthy and your dissertation on the number 4 wasn't? -- DeGotti
Den -- You better kill off Loser DeGotti, he's making your team record better! --
DeGotti
Doom Brigade -- Welcome to Shadowspire! -- DeGotti
Darque -- Where's this SYP that you mentioned? -- DeGotti
Astrid -- It's not the only thing, but it sure helps! -- Ceryoshe
Guy -- Thank you for the win. -- Rummer
Ringo -- Well, Johnny Ringo, you look as though somebody just walked over your grave.
-- Dicky Tourville
DeGotti -- You classless buffoon, way to push the envelope. No other manager has been
smacked down by the substitute editor, yet you have to go to depths never seen and
provoke a warning. You really are garbage. -- Den
Hombre -- So typical of your insignificance, you have to resort to massive down-
challenges in order to beat me. Such a little hypocrite you are, while you stand tall
when you have company and preach against anyone who down-challenges, you do the exact
same. Managers like you sicken me as you refuse to own who you are. You are
everything you preach against. Truly pathetic. -- Den
Otis the Tourney Prepping Plagiarizer -- What an amazingly simple piece of nothing you
are. So, tell me great copier, when you raise your booger-stained finger and point to
the standings, what do you see? My team is there, where is yours? That's right,
evidently you have trained them to "certain points in order to compete in each class."
Again, Lord of Fools, warriors in Shadowspire cannot compete in tournaments, this
arena is for real managers. Thus, it is obvious you do not fight here due to your
innate fear of my fighting ability, even the simplest of men can recognize that. What
is even more amazing is that you think you are somehow smart and using ground-breaking
techniques to time your warriors for tourneys. Really? How cute.
Otis you tourney-prepping pile of idiocy, I can grab Dicky Tourville's quarterstaff,
walk into the market, swing in a circle and strike a dozen managers just like you.
You are a part of the collective, a follower, a groupie, a part of the broken wheel of
Alastari. I can just imagine how you sit there, stymied by my wit and ability with
your little friends in a circle holding hands and screaming at each other with
frustration and then suddenly you all begin to chant "Aimed Blow, aimed blow, aimed
blow..." because you are not original and each does the exact same thing as the next.
Listen to me you piece of bottom-feeding scum, I have already experienced everything
you hope to achieve, I have stacks of TV's and TC certificates from when there were
hundreds of managers in a tourney, not the dozens you face today. I am what you wish
you were, which makes me laugh even harder. And again, I see you once again copied
someone, having to use a quote from the mighty George Carlin, nothing original to say
loser? When I wrote material for Mr. Carlin I can assure you he had no intention of
some pathetic little princess like you echoing his statements. You'll see me on the
sands? Doubtful, I am sure you are waiting for a team of 5 aimed blows, it is the
only style you can compete with. Your entire existence is a floccinaucinihilipilifi-
cation of talented managers. -- Den
Crambus -- Again we sit the throne, congrats. We hold so many titles across Alastari
right now I think they are considering changing the name of the land from Alastari to
Allied Axisville. -- Den
Furry Fury -- Nice 1-4 last turn, if only Otis the Plagiarizer were still active
instead of being confounded by my brilliance you may have achieved some wins from him.
-- Den
Hombre -- I almost forgot, beating Tangramayne was very simple. I suggest Dark Arena,
early and often. -- Den
Kid Arcane -- What is a "rick-taker"? You have me worried, will someone come for my
Ryk the Dragon and try to take him? He is my warrior and you cannot have him. Take
someone else. -- Den
Lady Mordraith -- Planning on fighting anyone of consequence this turn or still hoping
for match-ups against the third management tier here in Shadowspire? -- Den

BLOODGAMES at the SUMMER FACE-TO-FACE
Back by popular demand, we will be having Bloodgames at the Summer FTF! For those of
you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the
arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several
warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the
Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once
said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die
for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There
will be two different arenas:
FTF-Style (DM 98): for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies
Mail-in-Style (DM 99): for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds
Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions:
BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting
style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All are 84 points, 3-21, as usual.)
DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat
darker before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and
spirited. The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying
warrior. Even at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur.
REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters.
CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In the FTF-style bloodgames, there are no regular
challenges, only bloodfeuds. For the Mail-in arena, warriors may not change their
strategy from round to round (to make it fair for those who could not attend the
FTF). There will be no DA challenges in either arena.
TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your
rollups and strategies by the Wednesday before the FTF, else they are due by 9pm on
Friday, at the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular
tournament.
MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest.
ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill.
Errors must be reported before the next turn processes.
NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of
Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games.
FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than
one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49.
AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of
Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames
T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills.
The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion.
Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th
through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number
of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these
six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if
necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie.
A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills.
The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and
Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn
with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the
Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts.
AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once
the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won
their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus
will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila
Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three gladiators in
each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters games. Any special training
required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters combat will be
conducted before transfer into ADM. Astute managers will note that this means that
three warriors that are designed from scratch will survive the Bloodgames, win one of
the top three places, and go on to immortal glory! One of those warriors could be
yours!
The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make.
When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
NEW GRADUATES--FROM ALL ARENAS (INCLUDING CLOSED ARENAS)
For those of you who keep track of such things, several additional warriors
graduated from regular DM arenas (including closed arenas) since the last tournament.
