TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Death and Taxes
The heat was oppressive; it pounded at their heads; it poked them in their eyes;
it sucked the sweat out of the fighters as they pushed through theri exercises,
draining them of their strength and focus.
Or, Havoc frowned, it could have something to do with the wake they had last
night for Stratia. He nodded to himself as he watched the team struggle in the sand
pits. The glare of the sun turned the pits into reflector ovens. The hangovers most
of them were nursing didn't help at all.
"All right, all right!" Havoc clapped his hands a few times; the gladiators
paused to look in his direction a couple of them wavered in the rippling heat. "You
guys look pretty beat. Take the rest of the day off. Drink some water."
Havoc scooped up a handful of scorching hot sand and tossed it at the head of a
nearby fighter wearing leather armor and a sickly, haggard expression. "Ya hear me,
Quark? No booze!"
Quark spat sand, flapping his hands across his face while shaking his head and
staggering unsteadily toward the barracks. He stumbled and fell as he left the pit.
Havoc grinned.
The fighters reeled to their rooms while Havoc made his way to the office. A
slender young man sat in the high-backed leather chair against the wall. Havoc
slammed the door closed.
"I shoulda know you'd be here." Havoc threw himself into his chair and glared
through bloodshot eyes across his desk. The Kid shrugged his narrow shoulders.
"I brought the new recruit with me. He's waiting in the chow hall."
"We haven't finished clearing out Stratia's room," Havoc snorted.
"Well, that's okay. You didn't clean up after your little death party, either.
By the way, who puked in the utensils drawer? The cook didn't seem happy about it."
Havoc exhaled slowly and leaned back. "Right. Sure. I'll get the the new guy
as soon as we're done here."
Arcane made a thin smile and waved a slender hand in a dismissive gesture.
"Don't worry about it. I don't think this guy is going to mind waiting around."
Havoc's eyes narrowed. "Why do you say that, Kid?"
Arcane pulled a thin folder out from behind him and tossed it onto the cluttered
desk. Havoc sighed, picked it up, opened it, and began to read. After a few minutes
he closed the folder and slammed it onto the desk. He kept his eyes on the folder,
refusing to look at the Kid.
After a few more minutes Havoc finally leanded back, grimacing at the Kid as if
he'd just tasted something sour or half-rotten. "I can't believe you sometimes. Can
this fella even tell time? Honestly, where do you find thes guys?"
Arcane offered an apologetic shrug. "Hey, he's what the Commission sends us.
I've tried to bribe the prison officials, but Master Darque seems to have that market
cornered."
"Yeah, you were supposed to hack into that guy's racket," sneered Havoc. "You
had some great plan!" He waved a meaty paw at the folder. "This chump ain't going to
last too long, Kid."
"Who knows? Stratia started with an expert rating; we thought she'd be around
for quite a while."
"Naw, she was too good to last long," muttered Havoc. He shook his grizzled
head. "Okay. Okay." Havoc sighted. "Now, how do you wanna handle the bloodfeud?
Send Monoceros?"
"Not hardly," Arcane sniffed. "That's insulting for both parties. Send Quark."
"Him?" Havoc sat up and tilted his head in a silent question. "You know this
Vortex character hits pretty hard, don'tcha? I'm guessing he does Great, maybe even
Tremendous damage."
Arcan's thin face twistd into a brief smile. "There are plenty of gladiator
hopefuls on tap. Maybe the next recruit will be more.. motivated. Or at least,
capable of wearing heavy armor!"
Havoc dropped his face into his hands, hes elbows on his desk, and wished he
could cry.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Hail, fair Shadowspire, 'tis I, your new Duelmaster. I must say it has been a
very long road for me to get here. It's been 22 turns since my former teammate
Haulin' Oats has sat atop the throne. Since then many of Shadowspire's combatants
have parked their fannies on this seat. Which reminds me, where's that Lysol spray?
Back then I was a struggling young gladiator with a 5-8 record, feeling overmatched in
every bout. But since then I've racked up an amazing 10-11 record, and become the
slightly less overmatched champion you see before you. And no, I don't think that
Otto's offer of a free dinner to anyone who loses to me had any impact at all. Nor
was it very funny, Otto.
So, this week's strategy will be to avoid everyone who can beat me, and there are
many. I think I'm going to need more avoid slots. My challenges will go to those
deemed more pathetic than me, and you know who you are.

SPY REPORT
Ready for some action-packed adventure, some thrills, chills and spills? Well
fergit it, cause this is the Spyreport for SHADOWSPIRE. Like, NBA LEGENDS had to be
so embarrassed when they got kicked off #1 spot by SOME KINDA HATE! Way to go SOME
KINDA HATE! I couldn't believe it. Did THE COMMODORES really go up by 11? If only
those guys didn't have so may missing teeth... Gross! Wanna hear about a real
loser? Listen to this--THE MONGOLOIDS II got 1-4-0 and dropped 12. Didn't see much
of them after the fights! Cut this out and put it in your scrapbooks, OTTO'S DINER!
'Cause they got 5-0-0 and moved up to 5th! I talked to SHANGHAIED's manager before
the fights. He said, "We're gonna do good." And look at this: 4-1-0! Psychic, or
what! MVP award for URIAH CONN? PHILANTHROPISTS 2's proud of him after beating
GRIZZLY REMAINS and getting 23 points. Talk about yer major upsets! APSHAI's match
with DRY MOUTH MAX cost him a loss of 18 points! Oh, wow, like the Duelmaster must
be the most popular guy in all SHADOWSPIRE. He got the most challenges. (But what
about proposals?) DAVE LEBEIS thinks its 22-10-0 and studly character is good enough
to face up to the Duelmaster. Any bets? This Duelmaster is like something else!
SOME KINDA PATE stopped DAVE LEBEIS dead in its tracks! I hear the top team insists
all their warriors get nine hours sleep. They want photogenic fighters for PR
photos.
I gotta admit I haven't been in "deep con caves" with any spies. Really, I just
wing this stuff. The warriors of DARQUE AGES must be getting lonely. They were the
most avoided team. Do you guys know something that I don't? Hhmph! What kind of
warriors are NBA LEGENDS? DARQUE AGES, an easy team to beat if I ever saw one, can't
get them to accept an invitation! People were asking me did ASTRI REALLY challenge
POUDREUX? (all right, maybe they didn't, but it sounded good!) It wasn't a
spectacular fight, or anything, but POUDREUX wants me to write about it since he
overcame ASTRI. Satisfied? MAGIC must not be a good enough fighter to get in fair
fights. He challenged MORDECAI MOUSE. 12 is a big difference. (Well, that's what
they tell me.) I thought MAGIC showed great skill and promise when he won victory
over MORDECAI MOUSE. All right, so I slept through it! Big deal!
What does a fighter fight for? I mean, the crowds don't give a hoot if someone
gets killed. Not after four more fights. What a bummer deal for AYLA! She just
barely was getting hers "fighter feet" but got kill by BAILEY of WICKED MARTYRS!
Those're the breaks, I guess. QUARK really fought hard against CEREBRAL VORTEX.
That'll teach BONE MUNCHERS not to go and kill any of SEARCH THE SKY's guys again,
huh! Fight, fight, fight. Is that all you guys can do?
Remember, blood on a purple robe may stain. Soak it in cold water, and hand
wash. I'm getting tired of writing this stuff, so I'm calling it quits. Remember

Otis the Spunkless -- Wow, talk about beating a horse to death, which I am sure you
trailer-trash heathens do every week in order to have meat for food. How many times
does the arena have to be bored to death with your "me great and AA laughing stock"
speech? Seriously though, how many times? The next time you are sitting around with
your boys combing each other's mullets wondering why you are not brilliant like the
AA, beautiful like the AA, or fun like the AA try to come up with something inventive.
