SPY REPORT
Greetings, Shadowspirians! Welcome to turn 238 in the one and only Shadowspire, the
first non-tournament arena in the land of Alastari. I hope you are as excited for the
turn as I am about reporting it. We have lots of movement in the ranks with both
warriors and teams. We have some graduating gladiators we bid farewell to this turn.
And, we have the regular smack talk in the personal ads! All in all, a most glorious
turn! Let's get to it shall we?
Gibson successfully defends his title against Hakuna Fritatta and remains the
Duelmaster. This was Hakuna's final fight in Shadowspire as he heads to the Isle, and
he wanted to go out big. Unfortunately, Gibson was prepared for the challenge and
stopped Hakuna in 3 minutes. Good news for Gibson too, as he gets his invitation to
the Isle and will make his final title defense next turn. DMobster holds the throne
here in Shadowspire, as well as in our sister no-tournament arena Seam, so a special
double congrats to him.
Now we move to the relationship section of our report. We talk about avoiding and
guilds that put "flight" in "Fight or Flight" instincts. This turn we find DeGotti and
his Cult of Bacchus guild having trouble making friends. DeGotti's cult was avoided
more than any other team. Running away from any commitment we find Otto's Diner. One
would think these guilds are a match made in the heavens. Questionable food,
questionable drink, and fair prices! Oh well, sometimes it is what happens behind the
scenes that tell the true story. Plus, in Otto's defense, DeGotti is managing a cult!
It says so in the team name! Naga appears to be the most popular boy at the dance.
Everyone wanted to get on his dance card, but it only Kitty Tantrum got the chance to
twirl on the sands with him. Kitty challenged from 39 points below Naga, so chances
are he never saw her coming (or going since Kitty took him out after a 5 minute bout).
A few inactive teams caused big shake ups in the rankings. Furry Fury takes over the
number 1 spot from Otto's Diner. Grimm's squad has an impressive 12-3-0 record over
the last 3 turns. Close behind Grimm is DMobster's Wicked Martyrs guild sitting at
11-4-0. Monster Manual and Otto's Diner are tied for 3rd at 10-5-1, while there is a
3-way tie for 4th between Inebriation, The Mongoloids II, and Search the Sky.
Philthy's Inebriation crew had the biggest gain of the week going from 21st to 5th.
And, Cult of Bacchus fell 11 spots to 20th, awarding them the biggest drop for the
turn. Warmaster, The Monsantis, Doom Brigade, La Pentarchie, and Scorpio Likes: were
all inactive this turn.
There were 5 deaths this turn, and none of them came via the Dark Arena. In fact, a
rumor is floating around that there were no Dark Arena deaths because Arenamaster gave
everyone the cycle off. We'll have to investigate those claims a little closer.
Until then, the innuendo of laziness and shirking one's duties will stand (but not in
a court of law). There were a few Initiate deaths, which are not unexpected among the
inexperienced gladiators. Predator, from Primal Instinct, and Dark Crescent and
Photospasm, both of Search the Sky, fell on the sands this week and all three fit the
young gladiator profile. However, the other two deaths were a bit more surprising.
Disciple O Claw (7-6-0, 33) from Dragonbane Guild got a challenge from Wyld Turkey (5-
8-0, 23) of Inebriation. It was a quick fight. It was a deadly fight. Disciple O
Claw fell to Wyld Turkey in a one-sided 1 minute fight. The other veteran to fall
this turn was Brave Bull of Wicked Martyrs. Unlike the other match, Brave Bull (10-8-
1, 54) posted the challenge to Pixie (12-13-0, 61) of Monster Manual. The result was
still very much the same. The fight was short, deadly, and one-sided with Pixie
emerging victorious. Condolences to the dead and their teammates!
In closing, we want to congratulate all the warriors that will be making the trip to
the mysterious Isle of the Eye this cycle and next. Havana Black, Hakuna Fritatta, and
Baby Crambus fought their final bouts in Shadowspire this turn. Only Havana Black
will leave on a victorious note, after beating Baby Crambus. Hakuna, as we have
mentioned, lost to our reigning Duelmaster. Joining them next turn, Gibson of Wicked
Martyrs and Dry Mouth Max of Furry Fury will become full-fledged Lord Protectors and
leave for the Isle. Congrats to Crambus, Otto, and DeGotti for the class leaving this
turn, and congrats to DMobster and Grimm for the newly immortal.
I bid you adieu for now and look forward to next cycle. We will most certainly have a
new Duelmaster. There is also the possibility of new immortals. It is exciting times

Worthy adversaries -- As I take to the sands of Shadowspire for the last time I'd like
to share with those 18, hopefully 19 warriors, that lost to me, my humbling details.
Let it be know that I, Baby Crambus, am a ST with the stats of 15-10-13-15-10-14-7,
Normal/Great -1 DEC, EP, MO/MO DEC AND RESPONSE tactics, Attack learner! Fear me

Primal Instinct -- Imagine that, a pathetic little groper like you attempting to
lecture me on the word "honor". You know what, I'm not sure where you slithered in
from or what horrible events have shaped your sad little existence but on my team we
avenge the death of a teammate. Maybe in your world you don't have a problem letting
someone walk away after killing one of your warriors. Not how I work. When a man
pledges his sword to me, he does so knowing that I will take care of him in both life
and death. It just so happens that Reverend Pain was a good friend of Hateful Desire,
so when Beast Within accidently killed the Reverend, Hateful Desire was the first to
ask for the revenge match. I obviously granted it, because I lead through "honor" and
my warriors know any wrongs will be righted. Last turn you found out that it really
does not matter which of my warriors receive the challenge, for I am very good at what
I do, and you are unfortunately very poor at what you do. So, little fella, you will
accept four losses, of which I am assuming one will result in a kill. Then you can
decide if there is a modicum of honor in your scabbed body. -- Den

NAME CHANGE-O-RAMA
The crowd was surprisingly orderly, but it was still a crowd, and the Commission
clerk, Algernon, looked at it uneasily. Whenever this many people came together to
petition for something, it meant trouble. For him, anyway. Records to be altered.
Altering records was Bad. It made Extra Work.
His assistant clerk leaned close and whispered, "If it weren't for gladiators, we
wouldn't have jobs. Smile at them and ask what they want."
Algernon closed his eyes briefly. Looking at this crowd made him dizzy. They
were all wearing black and white stripes. Like a herd of zebras, except that zebras
didn't carry swords. Then he took a deep breath and managed a smile. "What... ah,
what can I do for you?"
"We want new names," the first gladiator said. There was a number on the front
of his shirt: 0381. He thumped the number with his thumb. "This here isn't a
name--"
"We want REAL names!" That voice came from farther back in the crowd.
"Yeah! We've paid our dues," another shouted, "and we've EARNED real names!"
One from the very back yelled, "I want to be called Tom."
All the others turned to look at him.
Algernon couldn't see him, but apparently those looks were accusing. Well, he
could understand that, "Tom" was such a... common name.
"My mom called me Tom," the voice in the back protested. "It's a good name."
"It isn't the name you put on the petition," 0381 said. "We talked about this.
We got our manager's agreement. You get the name on the petition."
"But--!"
Algernon didn't really want to keep staring at all these stripes while they
argued. He picked up the petition. "These names are the ones you want?"
0381 turned back. "Yes."
"It's a lot of trouble, and when other people see that YOU are getting name
changes, THEY are going to want them--" Seeing the gladiators beginning to frown...
and finger their weapons, he went on quickly, "So I figure we might as well make it a
complete deal. A Name-Change-O-Rama. Everyone who wants a name change can petition
for it. Get it all over with at once." He glanced at the petition, shuddered
slightly, and passed it to his clerk. "We'll announce it, proclaim it, even, and you
will get the names on this petition. And others will get the names THEY think they
should have had, too." He paused. "And I think I'll get a new name, I'm tired of
being an Algernon...."
