TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Summer Return
The eclectic skyline of Shadowspire shimmered and broiled in the summer's late
afternoon sun. Weak gusts of cool, damp wind from the bay pushed through the city
heat to offer a token of relief. They were quick to dissipate from the heat coming
off of some of the wider avenues.
Typical of the season and time of day, foot traffic was sparse. The marketplace
merchants endured the sun's battering energy in resolute stoicism. To pass the time
they gossiped and fanned themselves from underneath their colorful pavilions. To the
West, the luxuriant forest spread across the horizon in stark contrast with the
colorful sky as the sun began its evening plunge.
A massive, glittering cylinder of stone and glass rose high above its neighbors in the
far northwestern corner of the city. At its broad base, two mountainous hulks clad in
scalemail and helm flanked an alcove leading to a pair of wide doors. Naked
greatswords lay with careless ease across their prodigious shoulders. The guards
seemed to tolerate the heat well. Their posture and the darting movements of their
beady eyes buried in their fleshy faces indicated they were quite alert. However, the
orcish odor they gave off unsettled the dozen or so would-be anxious patrons lined up
in the shade along the curving wall.
Two men made their way to the tower's foundation. Their images rippled with the
billows of heat coming off the street as they glided over the cobblestones. The
merchants began to stir as they passed by the marketplace, but once the pair were
recognized they were ignored.
The first was an older, burly man with short-cropped hair. He wore a knee-length
byrnie of oiled and blackened rings. His broad face wore a light sheen of sweat and a
perpetual scowl outlined with light, spidery traces of old scars.
The second man was a willowy, bright-eyed youth wearing the elaborateleather armor of
an elf-lord, studded with esoteric symbols of silver and gold. It was set off by a
narrow belt, knotted about his thin waist and crusted with tiny amethysts. His
demeanor was cheerful, almost smug. With his carefree manner the youth showed no sign
that he even acknowledged the soaring temperature.
As the two men made their way up to the doorway, the security guards interposed
themselves between the newcomers and the double doors at their back. The youth smiled
and offered a reassuring nod. He reached into a hidden pocket at his belt; the
guards bellowed in unison and brandished their hefty greatswords in an aggressive
pose. The youth and his companion froze for a brief moment, but neither showed any
fear.
"Gentlemen," smiled the youth, speaking in a calm, unhurried manner. "I have
something to show you."
With a slow, smooth movement the youth produced a gold badge; it fit neatly into his
slender palm. Its design displayed a sturdy falchion of gold with a silver star
blazing above it, inlaid into an indigo blue enamel. The guards scrutinized the badge
with care, bending forward to peer down at it as the youth held it up and away from
himself. They were careful to avoid touching it.
After a few moments of silent examination and deliberation, the two massive doormen
separated, each shouldering his substantial blade and taking up his post on either
side of the entrance. The youth grinned at his companion, who frowned and shrugged.
"Whatta ya want? A cookie?"
The youth chuckled and sauntered into the cool, inviting atmosphere within The
Acropolis, his companion close on his heels.
* * * * *
The two men stepped out onto the flat tiled roof of The Acropolis. They paused to
savor the refreshing breeze coming off the bay. Circular tables of various
circumferences, scattered across the rooftop, were covered in thick linen tablecloths.
Glasses and silverware twinkled in harmony with muted conversations and the occasional
bursts of gay laughter. Chefs wearing slate blue, loose-fitting satin pantaloons
matched with collarless, ivory colored shirts hovered over small charcoal fires. The
sizzle of meat and the sharp clacking of a cleaver cut through the cacophony of
whispered conversations. A variety of women in scanty silk togas gracefully
maneuvered heavily laden trays amongst the tables.
A tall, portly man wearing the prerequisite pantaloons and embroidered blouse, along
with an air of polite disdain, met the youth and his companion before they had taken a
dozen steps. Unlike the chefs, the loose folds of his shirt were confined at his
plump waist by a wide crimson sash. Also, he wore a large sallet made of a
translucent silvery cloth set askew at a rakish angle.
"Hello, George," nodded the youth. "We'll take a private table, please."
George nodded, turned, and strode away imperiously between the tables. He led the
pair to a table at the periphery of the tower's rooftop. There were only a few vacant
tables in this area. George gave a flourishing wave toward their table with a bland,
inquisitive expression. The youth nodded, while the burly man's frown dissolved
somewhat as he scanned the area. The waiter did not pull out their chairs, but once
they were seated he offered them a slight bow and a brittle smile. The smile warmed
up a little as the slender young man reached out and shook his hand.
"We're hungry and thirsty, George. Please have the wine steward come visit us as soon
as possible."
"Yes, sir. Thank you, sir. I'll send the steward and your server immediately," the
waiter grinned. As he disappeared the older man tilted his head and shot a narrow
frown at his companion.
"Ya like throwin' yer money away, don'tcha Kid?"
"Bitch, bitch, bitch," murmured the Arcane Kid. He inhaled and exhaled deeply as
stared at the orange disc of the evening sun as it touched the dark forest to the west
of Shadowspire. "We're back, Havoc; we're celebrating. Can't you cheer up for just
tonight?"
"I don't wanna be startin' any new bad habits," Havoc grumbled.
"The Acropolis is one of my favorite restaurants," Arcane sighed. He sank back into
his plush chair and stared up into the rose-colored sky. "This wonderful view is part
of it."
"Let's just hurry up and get somethin' to drink," muttered Havoc. "It's been a long,
hot hike."
"Oh? Mr. 'I know a shortcut'?" chuckled The Kid. Havoc glowered and turned away from
the sunset, casting his face in shadow.
"I hope our contact has something pertinent for us," mused Arcane. "We've been gone
from Shadowspire for too long; teams have left and new stables have taken their
place."
"Who knows? Who cares?" Havoc muttered. "Let's just get on the sands and spill some
blood."
"I'll toast to that," laughed Arcane as the wine steward hurried to their table with
two waiters in tow.
DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
Notes from the arena champ.
Ten straight wins and possibly counting -- but running on however the Commission says
I fight the best. Those particulars being high, low, with a greataxe. Never tried
it. They also say I learn decisiveness concepts (if it's just a concept, am I really
decisive?). Anyway, I disagree: 15 init, 13 att, 9 par, 6 def, and 6 dec. (And 1
token rip.) Challenging Heatwave, avoiding none. Farewell. Oh, and historical
correction: I'm pretty sure this is Hombre's fourth team, and it's his second waste
(Nick Nack of Bond-Age).

SPY REPORT
Welcome to back to Shadowspire! Turn 249 is upon us and it is always wonderful to
have a day full of fights, gladiator interviews, and street vendor foods! Some weeks
the fights are the best and some weeks the food wins. This week, the fights were
spectacular and certainly held the crowd's attention better than the food. Unless you
dined at Otto's before the fights began, then you spent the remainder of the afternoon
wondering, "What is that gurgling sound and where is the nearest outhouse?" Enough!
On to the fights!
The Paperboy was on his way out of town after this turn. He got his invite to the
Isle, so this final turn was for him to bid farewell to the crowds and fellow
gladiators, while still putting on a show for the audience. The Paperboy declared his
intentions to challenge Heatwave, but it was Heatwave who posted a challenge to our
new Lord Protector. When the dust settled, The Paperboy leaves the arena an immortal,
but Heatwave now sits upon the mighty throne of Shadowspire! Congrats to Heatwave,
who is managed by DMobster.
On our list of avoids, we see that Inebriation was the most avoided team. A newer
team, Warbow, avoided them the most. The Empress Wu was the most challenged warrior
this turn, repeating her popularity from turn 246. Sadly, none of those suitors were
able to fight Wu, as she had already posted a bloodfeud challenge to Ryk the Dragon.
Ryk takes over as the arena's most popular warrior, and with good reason considering
Wu's fighting style.
Welcome back to Search the Sky! It is good to see you once again on the sands.
Sadly, the arena was not as welcoming as I am trying to be, and Search the Sky went 0-
5 on their return. That is the worst team record for the turn. Hopefully, the two
new recruits can turn the team's fortunes around. The best record for the turn is
shared among Pray the Gods, Shanghaied, and Some Kinda Hate. Each one pulled out a 4-
1-0 turn, so congrats to the three of you!
There was only 1 non-Dark Arena death this turn. Perfect Smile of Big Lake Outcasts
killed Slaughter Ape from Wicked Martyrs. These two teams have been killing a lot of
one another lately. This makes the 3rd death between then over the last 5 turns, with
Den leading 2-1. It was noted that Search the Sky came back to a 0-5, but two of
those deaths came via Dark Arena. Chase was not happy with his new recruits and
Abomination sent the two fresh faces to fight Black Orc and Arenamaster.
For the first time in recent memory (or any memory I have of such things), the top 5
teams remain unchanged. Shanghaied is still sitting pretty with a 13-2-0 record, with
Inebriation and Some Kinda Hate rounding out the top 3. There wasn't much movement by
the other teams. Abomination rose 5 spots, while Pray the Gods moved up 4 to 12th.
The teams that lost ground this turn only slipped a few places, namely Dragonbane
Guild, Darque Ages, and Big Lake Outcasts. The largest drop belongs to Monster
Manual, who fell 3 ranks to 14th.
Credits and The Paperboy leave us for the Isle, fighting their last this turn. We now
have two new immortals in Lyon Bear and Barbarossa. Lyon Bear is the third graduate
from The Commodores, and the team's first Total Parry. Barbarossa is Darque Age's
17th graduate and first Aimed Blow. With Barbarossa's invite, Darque Ages becomes the
5th team to complete the Round Robin in Shadowspire, joining La Pentarchie, Dragonbane
Guild, Otto's Diner, and Cult of Bacchus. Congrats to our departing immortals and our
newly minted ones!
It is time to wrap up this report. I hope to see each of you here next turn for the
big Turn 250 festivities. There will be fights to watch and food to eat. You know,
it is going to be a lot like the previous 249 turns, so you won't want to miss it.

You fight, and the only way you win is when you downchallenge, which is what you do
pretty much everytime--and even then, you still lose. You can't even kill my
warriors, which according to you, is so easy to do! Real loser indeed. Find another
game to play, like Candyland or Chutes n' Ladders or something. I'm sure there's an
online community of 9 yr olds who'd love to beat the creepy ol' thang at their game.
