TEAM SPOTLIGHT
Havoc paced back and forth. The room wasn't small, but it did feel somewhat
cramped. He stalked around a pair of high-backed leather chairs and a modest round
table sitting in the middle of its colorful tile floor. Every once in a while Havoc
paused to look out the casement window.
Given that it was a private room secreted high inside the thick walls of the
Acropolis, the view was, he had to admit, pretty decent. The window faced the
northeast, so the evening sun was not in his eyes. The eclectic collection of gothic
steeples and bulbous rooftops shimmered and shone. The edge of the bay glittered like
a well-polished broadsword as the last rays of sunlight struck it. To the west, just
at the edge of his viewpoint, the luxuriant forest spread across the horizon in a dark
leafy mass. The black shadows of it were pushing steadily towards the city as the sun
sank.
He toyed with the latch and considered opening the window to catch a whiff of a
breeze, but decided against it. Somehow (and probably Arcane knew how) the Acropolis
managed to keep its interior air cool and comfortable, despite the soul-searing heat
outside. He shrugged and resumed pacing.
A gentle rapping on the thick door caused Havoc to pause, one calloused hand just
touching the pommel of his broadsword.
"Yeah?"
The 'click' of the handle was followed by the ponderous swing of the door into
the room. A young woman, her dark hair dangling in a thick ponytail, brought in a
wide serving tray and set it on the table. She was wearing the typical Acropolis
attire: sandals, silk pantaloons that hung low on her hips, and a close-fitting
sequined vest that strained against the thin leather thong woven across its narrow
front. She avoided eye contact with Havoc, but managed a deft catch of the coin he
tossed her as she was leaving. She offered a brief smile, with the hint of a bow, and
closed the door behind her with a definitive 'thunk'.
Havoc checked the door, and decided to bolt it. Then he swung his attention to
the tray. A large silver pitcher, condensation dripping down its sides, sat between a
small covered bowl and a dull, pewter tankard. The sides of both were adorned with
engravings of gladiators killing and dying. Havoc squinted at the gladiators on the
side of the cup as he poured from the pitcher. One looked somewhat like a lunger he
used to know. He turned his attention to the contents of the cup. It was dark,
frothy, amber-red fluid with an aroma of cinnamon and raisins and steel. There was a
decent chance it was expensive and not that good, thought Havoc, but he shrugged and
took a small swallow and sloshed it around in his mouth anyway.
It was excellent. Refreshing, even. Havoc shook his head with a wry smile.
Havoc drained the tankard and was refilling it when an excruciating shriek pierced his
ears. Havoc winced and almost dropped the pitcher. He turned and glared at an oval
of purple light as it coalesced in front of the window.
The shrieking noise died as a slim youth materialized. His face was narrow and
somewhat pale; his eyes carried an amused tilt above a sharpish nose and a thin smirk
of a mouth. The youth wore a suit of leather armor, ornately tooled with scrolls and
flowers and polished brass studs set into its seams. A thick sky-blue cloak of wool
hung to his knees. Sturdy leather sandals, also decorated lavishly with stampings and
studs, were strapped to his narrow feet.
"Sorry I'm late," said the Arcane Kid with a smile. "Ship's business."
Havoc grimaced and resumed filling his tankard. He adjusted his scabbard and
flung himself into one of the two chairs. The well-oiled leather squeaked a bit as he
settled into its deep padding. Havoc stared at one of the tapestries and took a
healthy gulp. A thin blank smile formed on the Kid's narrow face. He stood and
watched Havoc for a couple of minutes while Havoc stared at the embroidery.
"Well, let's get to it, shall we?"
"Hhhhmmmggghhhh," muttered Havoc, his mouth still fastened to his tankard.
"How do the new recruits look to you?"
Havoc finally turned his head to scowl at the Kid. "Just like I expected 'em
to!" he growled. "They suck!"
Arcane chuckled and made his graceful way to the opposite chair. He swept back
his cloak and sat down in one smooth, controlled movement. The two locked eyes with
each other for another couple of minutes before the Kid finally broke the connection
and began snickering at the ceiling. Havoc frowned, emptied the rest of his flagon,
then slapped it down on the table.
"I'm sure you can do something useful with them," the Kid said, once again
looking Havoc dead on. "Perhaps making them into offensive styles and giving them
ridiculous, all-or-nothing strategies?"
"Yeah, sure!" Havoc rumbled. "They either kill or get killed, is that yer idea?"
Arcane tilted his smiling face back towards the ceiling and made a discrete shrug.
"Yeah, and then the rest o' the team looks at me like I'm their worst enemy.... I
don't need that kinda drama, Kid." Havoc shook his head and closed his eyes. "I
really don't!"
"Do with them what you will," Arcane said with a nonchalant wave into the air.
"We're flying blind. We've been gone a while and we don't know what we're dealing
with here."
"And who's to blame for THAT?!" Havoc thundered, coming to his feet and glaring
down at the Kid. "Do I gotta remind ya who decided to leave the arena in the first
place?!"
Arcane gave a deep sigh and dropped his eyes to the tabletop. "You're still
going on about THIS again?"
"Kid, I know you said you had yer reasons, but..." Havoc clenched his thick hands
into bony hammers and pounded at his thighs for a few seconds. "I just hate all this
'startin' over' stuff. I mean I just HATE it, Kid! I hear what some o' the other
teams are sayin' and--"
"When did you start to believe that I care what anyone else thinks?" Arcane
interjected. "I think you're taking this too seriously."
"What??!!" Havoc roared, leaping to his feet. "I can't talk to you like this!"
He turned and went to the window. He unlatched it and pushed it open; a swirl of
aromas and warm air swept into the small room. Havoc thrust his face half out of the
window casement and stared down at the darkening shadows of the city.
Arcane sighed again. One slim hand touched the designs on his leather
breastplate; he ran his long fingers along the patterns absently while he stared at
the tile floor.
"You're right, of course," whispered the Kid. "I pulled the plug and there's no
wholly acceptable excuse. I'm sorry now I did it, but...." The Kid shrugged and shook
his head and closed his eyes.
Havoc pulled his head inside and closed the window, latching it and letting his
hand linger on the mechanism while he shaped his next thought.
"There's a lot more to running a ship like the Outworlder than you probably
realize," murmured Arcane. With his eyes closed and his head bowed, Havoc thought for
a moment he might be- praying? "It can be very, very... draining."
"Yeah?" Havoc growled. "Maybe. So what?"
The Arcane Kid chuckled silently and shook his head again, but he kept his eyes
closed. Havoc studied him for a few moments before turning to face the window again.
He placed his beefy arms on the wide ledge and watched the lantern lights spring up
below. After a long while he turned again and faced the Kid, who was still sitting in
the chair with his head bowed and his eyes closed.
"We gonna hang around for a while this time?" Havoc muttered.
Arcane sighed deeply and opened his eyes. He looked up into Havoc's grim
expression. "Well, we're no longer at the absolute bottom of the rankings," smiled
Arcane wistfully. "So why not?"
Havoc's eyes gleamed and his face broke into a wicked smile. "Yeah. Why not?"
SPY REPORT
Happy 250th Turn, Shadowspire! We have reached a milestone in Alastari's first
non-tourney arena, and I think 250 looks good on us!
For today's report, I'm going to give a glimpse of Shadowspire's first turn along
with our current news. Hopefully, this little stroll down memory lane will stir up
some wonderful memories, or even renew a few forgotten feuds. We can have both, can't
we? Oh well, let's take a look at the fights!
Heatwave was our Duelmaster last turn, and Heatwave remains the Duelmaster this
turn. Blackjack Johnson took a stab (or five) at the throne by challenging Heatwave,
but it was not to be this time. It was a valiant effort, so congrats and condolences
to them both. On Shadowspire's first turn, the Duelmaster was... NO ONE! Rama the
Shark from DeathontheSands and Fulton from War Machine tied with 12 recognition on the
inaugural turn. The arena would not enjoy its first Duelmaster until turn 3 when
Alberta Clipper of Just Chillin took the throne at 3-0-0 and 33 recognition points.
Life Impacts, a Consortium affiliate, was the first team to enjoy most avoided
status in Shadowspire. Just Chillin was caught running away from them. This happened
on turn 2, which coincidentally was also the first turn the Shadowspire Yellow Press
premiered. This turn, Otto's Diner is the most avoided and Cult of Bacchus avoided
them. The golems are not revealing to me who was the most challenged warrior this
turn, but on turn 2, when challenges could first be issued (other than to the Dark
Arena), Gutenberg of Darque Ages was the most challenged warrior.
There was a little movement in the team rankings this turn. Shanghaied lost the
top team spot as Inebriation moved in to tie them with a 10-5-0 record over the last 3
turns. The top 5 remains unchanged, just a few minor shifts in position from Otto's
Diner, Some Kinda Hate, and Wicked Martyrs. On Turn 3, Just Chillin held the top team
spot with a 12-3-1 record, followed by Ragnarok's Wolves at 11-4-2. The Commodores
fell 4 spots this turn, which is the biggest drop for an active team. Cult of Bacchus
and Search the Sky rose 3 places, which are the biggest jumps. As I said, just a
little movement overall.
On turn 1, which ran on January 16, 2007, there were 14 total deaths. Only 4
came via the Dark Arena. This turn, we witnessed 8 deaths, and all of them occurred
in the Dark Arena. Spymaster and Bandit Prince were particularly busy, killing 2
warriors each. Lyon Bear decided to try out his new immortality by challenging the
Dark Arena. He faced Spymaster in an exciting 2 minute fight, but Lyon Bear was
slain. Our other immortal, Barbarossa, was challenged by Ryk the Dragon,
Shadowspire's current fan favorite. Even with new insight into his fighting life,
Barbarossa could not win, falling to Ryk in a 2 minute bout. Getting the call this
turn is Pho C of Otto's Diner, which is Otto's 16th graduate and 3rd Lunger. Congrats
to Pho C and Otto! We can't really look back to turn 1 for graduates, now can we?
Shadowspire's first graduating class included '76 Gran Torino of American Muscle,
Copernicus of Darque Ages, and Chakhari of Kellumbo's Kids.
Now that 250 turns are under our belt, we look forward to 250 more and beyond!
Shadowspire has been a thriving arena since its opening, and we hope the trend
continues. We proudly boast a dedicated base of managers that enjoy the non-tourney
experience. And I want to thank each of you that take the time to fight here each
cycle. I also want to acknowledge those managers that were here for the inaugural
turn and are active today. So a special thank you to: Big Lake Outcasts, Dragonbane
Guild, Cult of Bacchus, Inebriation, and Darque Ages. Until next time, dear readers,
-- Phineas Rannulf

Ups
Tu Du -- Yeah, I have something for you to do. Clean all your blood off my weapon and
armor. -- Human Centipede
Alceste -- I'll say this, you definitely lasted longer than I thought you ever would.
-- Politelkoreknes

Horrid -- Yep. -- Shem
Den -- You're a loser and I'll see you next turn if you're still alive. -- Vlad
Darque -- HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA!!!!!! Grats on the grad, no, really! -- Vlad
Welcome back to Search the Sky. -- Nomad and the Guild
Celery Stalker -- It was that stringy stuff. It is almost like extra armor. --
Stormclaw
Eat this -- No stringy stuff, that was your problem. Well, and making the mistake of
challenging me. Gotcha. -- Tristan
Hellbraiser -- Those skills. Is that even legal in a no-tourney arena? Consider me
impressed. Also victorious, but still, I was impressed while beating you. Lots of
food this turn for the Guild. -- Dragon Scarred
Bad Roll-Ups -- No, that should be bad match-ups. An Abomination. -- Brutal
Kid Arcane -- Welcome Back! Keep the spotlights coming! -- DeGotti
BlackHart -- Don't think I haven't noticed! I knew when some of my guys made it to

Your winning % will falter soon! -- DeGotti
Darque -- Congrats on your Shadowspire Round Robin! -- DeGotti
SYP -- Being turn 250, will we be see some sort of history report? -- DeGotti
Dorkio -- Did mom finally give you a thesaurus after collecting enough aluminum to
afford one? Look at you trying to impress us all with multisyllabic words! Sadly
though, you used three of them in the wrong context and you used prepositions
incorrectly as well. If only mommy could have taught you more than how to beg for
food. So, in the last 20 turns we have had 15 fights and I am 13-2 against you. Of
those 15 fights, 12 were challenges that I made, seven were up-challenges, resulting
in a 6-1 record in my favor, and five were down-challenges resulting in a 4-1 record
in my favor. You can talk your broken speak as much as you want, but the facts and
data support my position. I am ridiculously super-cool and you are just a simple
little beggar that cannot understand on which foot a sock belongs. Keep rattling
around your empty station but please know that you can never hope to achieve even a
tiny little smidgen of the neat stuff that I have. -- Den
DeGotti -- Congratulations on the birth of your first child. They are the greatest
joy you will ever experience. Tip, don't bring the family to eat at Otto's! -- Den
Wicked Martyrs -- You ready to give up yet? -- Den
