TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The sun's light had just begun to color the horizon. Suddenly, there were high-
pitched shouts of surprise, sounds of furniture crashing into the walls, and loud
baritone cursing erupting from the open doorway of the northern barracks. One by one
three men stumbled out of the barracks and scrambled to line up at attention at the
edge of the sand pit. Two were panting; one carried a lump on the side of his head,
gained by being shoved hard against the doorway as he was exiting.
Flare, as usual, was first to line up. He was also the only one of the three who
was fully dressed, though his shirt was unbuttoned and he had fastened his trousers
while the others were hurrying to take their places.
Moonshadow weaved a bit as he took his place next to him. He seemed precariously
balanced on his bare feet, wavering back and forth, frowning and rubbing his temple.
His shirt was unbuttoned; his pants were on backward and unfastened; somehow they
stayed up.
Eclipse, of course, had been last. He staggered to his place in line and
blinked and yawned at everyone and nobody in particular. He craned his large
head at the horizon in all directions while he scratched at his scalp. He wore one
boot; his shirt was unbuttoned and inside out. It was apparent he slept nude.
Havoc stalked out of the barracks last, breathing deep, scowling, and
slapping a large wooden paddle against his calloused palm.
"When I tell you ladies to get up an' get movin', I mean NOW!" Havoc barked.
THWACK! He struck Eclipse across the bare buttocks as he passed behind the men.
Taken by surprise, Eclipse snapped his mouth closed on another yawn he was
starting. He blinked faster and harder; he did not seem to be in any pain.
Havoc paced back and forth in front of the men for a few minutes as the sun
steadily lightened the damp morning air. He snorted and paused to glance up at the
dawn sky. It was clear and probably going to remain cloudless all day. Havoc sucked
in a mouthful of air and held it for a few seconds. It was going to be a humid day,
clouds or not. He resumed his pacing.
Havoc growled and kept smacking the thick paddle against his palm. Every once in
a while he'd pause for a few seconds to push his wide face a few centimeters away from
the blank stare of one of the gladiators and glare into his eyes. Flare and
Moonshadow focused on an imaginary point in front of them. Eclipse spent his time
contorting his face into various expressions as he concentrated on trying not to yawn.
"That last cycle in the arena was pathetic!" Havoc growled at last. "I was
thinkin' ya could at least win ONE stinkin' fight!" Nobody had a reply for this.
"We're takin' on a couple o' new recruits tomorrow," Havoc sighed. "Chances are
better than even they'll stink at least as much as YOU three." Nobody had a reply for
this.
"So the plan o' the day is to get the barracks cleaned up, then work on the pit
here. Maybe if ya had a clean place to practice ya'll improve.... At least the Kid
thinks so." Havoc rolled his eyes at the brightening sky. "We'll start with the
barracks. Flare, you an' Moonshadow clean out Syzygy's room and box up his crap.
We'll send it out to his folks tomorrow."
Havoc waved his paddle at the sand pit behind him. "We gotta lot of cleanin' up
to do around here. This place ain't what it's gonna be yet, and neither are any o'
you bums!"
"Uuuhhhmmm..." Eclipse raised a brawny arm and fluttered his hand high in the
air.
Havoc looked at the ground, looked up at Eclipse, shook his head, and sighed
deeply again. He moved to stand in front of Eclipse. He had to raise his head to
look into his face.
"Okay. What is it, spud?"
"Uh, well, what about D.M.? Aren't we goin' to clean his room too?"
"NO! We are NOT!" Havoc roared. The other two gladiators flinched slightly in
surprise. "When ya got a record that lousy, ya ain't got nothin' worth leavin' behind
to send to nobody!" THWACK! Havoc slapped the paddle against Eclipse's bare leg.
"Let the next fighter worry 'bout it!"
"Uuhh..." Eclipse struggled to formulate a reply, but Havoc ignored him and
stepped in front of the other two gladiators. They seemed to sag a bit.
"You two geniuses make sure to clean Sygy's room up real good," Havoc muttered.
"One o' the fighters is a gal this time." The two fighters seem to perk up at this
news. Havoc noted this and frowned.
"Don't get yer hopes up, ladies," Havoc chuckled mirthlessly as he stepped back.
"With yer luck, she'll probably be a better fighter than any of ya!" He shook his
head at Eclipse, who had started to notice that he was missing his pants.
"Not that it'd be all that difficult," Havoc grumbled to himself.
He took a deep breath and gave them all one last hard stare. "All right, we got
a lotta of work to do before any o' ya freeloaders gets breakfast! Let's get
started...."
SPY REPORT
Good afternoon, dear readers! It is wonderful to see you again as we celebrate
yet another glorious turn in Shadowspire. I know that is a much more joyous opening
to the spy report than you are accustomed, but we have many reasons to celebrate this
turn. First, Belinda said she isn't coming around anymore! I can think of no better
reason to wear a smile. In fact, drinks are on me at Otto's for all participating
managers and warriors this turn. The second reason I'm so happy is the new golems are
working out great! The Commission updated a few of them and cast a new spell here and
there, and it is working wonderfully! Oh well, we can celebrate more later, let's
talk about the fights!
HEATWAVE left for the Isle after fighting this turn. WARWULF from CULT OF
BACCHUS posted a challenge to our outgoing Duelmaster, but was unable to seize control
of the throne. It was a crowd-pleaser, for sure, but WARWULF's loss gave the throne to
the highest recognized warrior. So, we congratulate BAD ROLL-UPS of ABOMINATION on
attaining the coveted title of Duelmaster. CULT OF BACCHUS finds themselves on the
losing side of a fight once again, as HOLLOWSOUL fell to BAD ROLL-UPS in a 1 minute
bout.
There are no new graduates this cycle, so we look to next cycle and our current
Challenger Champions anticipating some announcements next turn. BRUTAL GRUNGE of
DRAGONBANE GUILD and BAD ROLL-UPS top the list of potential invites next turn. THE
EMPRESS WU appears to have all the political support she needs, but is waiting to show
the Commission she is experienced enough to make it on the Isle. RYK THE DRAGON has
entered the conversation as well.
BIG LAKE OUTCASTS is the most avoided team and DRAGONBANE GUILD avoided them the
most. No one else came close to the 9 avoids BIG LAKE OUTCASTS received. The most
challenged warrior this turn was HUMAN CENTIPEDE of ABOMINATION. This is a tragedy
for HUMAN CENTIPEDE because one of those challenges made it through and ended his
life. TU DU of THE MONSANTIS got through where others failed and executed HUMAN
CENTIPEDE in a 1 minute fight.
INEBRIATION made a huge points jump this turn, 70 recognition points. Philthy's
4-1-1 turn contributed to the great gain! DRAGONBANE GUILD takes over the top spot
from CULT OF BACCHUS, who fell down to 3rd. MONSTER MANUAL and INEBRIATION both climb
4 spots into the top 5. The biggest gain of the turn belongs to WICKED MARTYRS who
moved ahead 6 places to 8th. The biggest drop for turn 252 will be shared by SOME
KINDA HATE and PRAY THE GODS, who fell 7 ranks. We also want to take this time to
welcome, KILL EM ALL to Shadowspire. Introduce yourselves! May your stay with us be
pleasant and competitive!
Death has visited us this turn! Seven total deaths this turn, and the most
shocking stat is only one of them came via the DARK ARENA. The most prominent death
has already been alluded to as HUMAN CENTIPEDE, who leaves us with an 18-18-2 record.
The other shocker came as HATEFUL DESIRE died at the hands of POLITELKOREKNES.
HATEFUL DESIRE was a veteran of the arena, but departs at 16-17-2. OTTO'S DINER wins
(or is it loses) the turn with the most deaths. CELERY STALKER and CURD BURGLAR have
expired, which doesn't stop Otto from serving food at the diner, but arena expiration
does not have as much wiggle room. DARQUE AGES lost a new recruit in a random match
up, but that is nowhere near as newsworthy as all the other deaths that took place on
turn 252.
My time is up, but let me hit the high points for you once again. Ding Dong
Belinda's gone! There is also an unusually high number of Shadowspire warriors gone
this turn, but not by the usual means of DARK ARENA. Or, as the SYP headline will
read: BELINDA BAD, GOLEMS GOOD, and DEATH A-PLENTY on TURN 252. Farewell!
