The overlapping circles of warm, flickering light given off by a half-dozen lanterns, hanging from poles along the front edge of the sand pit, began to fade and merge into the surrounding luminescence. Although many wide, dark pools of shadow remained, scattered amongst the buildings and the rest of the training grounds, the light in the pit, reflected and enhanced by the white sand, grew stronger as the fighters grunted and sweat and breathed hard through flared nostrils. They appeared to be moving in slow motion while in a state of severe discomfort. Their legs were spread apart and trembling as their arms made protracted gestures suggesting that the fighters were warding off or deflecting a series of attacks. The warriors shifted their weight from one foot to the other with a deliberate, unhurried calm. Their torsos gradually twisted as their thick-soled boots made light troughs in the sand to mark where they pivoted. Meanwhile, their arms moved in sluggish patterns suggesting they held either invisible or imaginary blades. Though they wore neither weapons nor helmet, all five gladiators DID wear raggedy old suits of platemail -- veteran armor that had somehow survived dozens of forays in the arena. This "experience', coupled with the casual neglect of the average gladiator, was evident. The armor was heavy, battered, and every suit had sections where at least one violent, passionate thrust had rent a thin gap in a potentially fatal area. Havoc, his frugal eye always on the lookout for a bargain, had haggled the "training armor' from every surrounding gladiator guildhouse and "open tent sale' in Shadowspire. Under strict supervision, fledgling warriors had cleaned, polished, and repaired their used equipment as best as they were able, although the smells that emanated from within, once the metal became warm through sun and exertion, was sometimes difficult to stomach. A banshee shriek erupted, scattering startled birds in a cacophony of squawks and the fluttering of frantic wings. Its ear-splitting pitch hurtled up the sonic scale and teetered for a brief moment at its apex, then dissolved into the dying, pitiful wail of damned souls. The warriors, grimacing at the ear-piercing screech, resolutely focused on the stern face and warning glare of the warrior who led their exercise, ignoring the youth with incandescent eyes as he materialized at the edge of the pit. His long, dark hair was swept back from his sharp features and held back by a pair of pearl-encrusted combs carved from polished tortoise shell. He wore a short- sleeved suit of burnished ringmail that hung halfway to his knees. A shortsword and dagger, sheathed in decorative brass scabbards, dangled at a jaunty angle from a thin leather belt which had an intricate design worked into its polished surface. It was worn low and cinched tightly above the youth's narrow hips. His slender arms were crossed; his face wore a puckered smirk that stood in contrast with the intensity of his scrutiny as he watched the warriors move and shuffle with slow, methodical precision in the sand. The Arcane Kid stood still for several moments, staring at the group of gladiators as they shifted from pose to pose at a leisurely pace; their movements in near-fluid unison. He noted the sheen of sweat drenching their faces, the trembling legs and arms, their heavy breathing. He shrugged and made a deep sigh, dropping his arms as he started toward the fighters. Arcane seemed to glide as he strolled around the pit. Small stones set into the hilts of his weapons glittered in the strengthening light. His armor seemed to glow. The Kid stopped just behind the burly fighter who stood in front of the other five, facing them, wearing a black byrnie of heavy chainmail. "Are you about finished?" Arcane murmured. "It seems they are done." The broad shoulders made a few elaborate shrugs as the stocky warrior breathed deeply. "Yeah," replied Havoc. He clapped his hands, then gestured at the gladiators as they sagged in front of him. "You kids can take a break -- get some breakfast, but not too much." He waved toward the obstacle course; the mannequins hanging from their posts seemed to wave back in the dissipating gloom of the early morning. "Meet me at the Blood Pit in half an hour!" Havoc turned and headed back to the office; his pace was quick but, like Arcane, his gait was smooth. The Kid had no problems keeping up; he entered the office close behind Havoc's wide back and settled himself into one of the two plush armchairs with an appreciative sigh. "The "Blood Pit'? That's a trifle melodramatic," chuckled Arcane. Havoc had maneuvered around the massive desktop, which took up a good quarter of the room, and thrown himself into a padded swivel chair. He glanced over the hodgepodge and frowned at the Kid, who was studying the scattered documents and accessories with an expression of distaste. "Yeah, well, they tend to bleed a lot in there." He dropped his eyes to the heaps and stacks of debris. "Ya got a problem with that?" Arcane waved a slender hand at the mass of paperwork. "Do YOU have a problem?" The desk was almost completely covered with numerous uneven piles of unraveled scrolls. At least a dozen thick folders, crammed with odd notes scribbled on scraps of parchment, lay stolidly in the middle of the mess, mingled with assorted quills, pots of various inks, seals, stamps, and wax tapers. A slim pamphlet with the title: "Tai Chi, the Grand Ultimate Fist' lay on top. Two large, hooded oil lamps, suspended by brass chains, threw a warm, bright cone of light over the entire collection of clutter. "Well, wadda ya have to say?" growled Havoc. "Go ahead; spit it out!" Arcane tilted his head and caused the pearls in his hair to gleam. He thrust his chin at the cluttered desktop. "You sure you have a handle on this?" "Yeah, I do!" Havoc reached down and opened a lower drawer. He fished around inside and pulled up a large bottle. He kicked the drawer shut and, without offering any to his guest, he twisted off the cap and took a healthy swig. Arcane shook his head in resignation. "What do you plan to do about that bloodfeud?" Havoc wiped his mouth with the back of his calloused hand. "Which one? Ours or theirs?" The Kid shrugged and offered a small smile. "Both, I suppose. But, if I may, I'd like to suggest that you send Eclipse down to handle OUR revenge." "Yeah? Well first of all, ain't you the guy who's always bitchin' about managers that down-challenge every chance they get?" Havoc paused while the Kid shifted uncomfortably in his chair. "Second, ain't you worried about him gettin' himself killed? Nala will likely be lookin' for just this kinda move." Arcane raised a bony finger into the air. "First, their team name of "Pray the Gods' isn't just a whim," Arcane smirked. "They seem to base their strategy on luck and esoteric rituals more than skill." He shook his narrow head and raised another finger. "Second, no, I'm not worried about Eclipse in that matchup. Down-challenging to bloodfeud isn't exactly smiled upon, but as long as we send an idiot like Eclipse, who has damn little chance of killing anyone, I think we'll be okay with our "public image'. Okay?" Havoc tilted backward in his chair; it squeaked out a complaint but it was ignored. He took another deep swallow, capped the bottle, and held it in a languid hug. "Well, it don't really matter how that team works its fighters, right? I mean, with our record, ya can't exactly say we're basin' our strategies on the old "tried and true'. Yer always tinkerin' with --" "I like to experiment with different tactics!" The Kid interjected. "So what? How else can we learn anything useful? I refuse to base my strategies solely on the ancient writings within the Enchiridion---" "Nobody said ya did!" "Besides, I'm not the only one who likes to try different things." Arcane pointed a finger at Havoc. "I noticed you've been reading that pamphlet I sent you--" "Yeah, well, I'm desperate!" Havoc unscrewed the top off of the bottle and took another swig. "Just send Eclipse, Havoc. He probably won't kill anyone --" "Yeah, probably, yer right. But that ain't it!" Havoc growled. "Spit it out, Kid! Yer worried about the OTHER bloodfeud, ain't ya? Yer worried about Master Darque, am I right?" The Arcane Kid stared at Havoc for a few moments. His eyes flared with an intrinsic light, but Havoc was not intimidated and he did not look away. "'Worried' isn't the word I would choose," Arcane frowned. "I'm realistically concerned." "Uh-huh. About what? Fighters die in the arena, Kid. New fighters die the most." Havoc leaned forward and placed the bottle on a smaller pile of papers. "We didn't challenge and we didn't have nothin' to do with the match-up," he sighed as he leaned back again. "Darque'll know this." "Yes, I know." The Kid rose and drifted to the window. "But there are rumors... many rumors. An odd rustling of energy is infusing the cosmos -- I can feel it. And this month has some special 'magical' properties, I've been told." Havoc snorted. "We've been here long enough to know that's true!" "Yes, well..." Arcane sighed and studied the sun as it peered over the horizon. "There are rumors of a witch, or witches, that have been hired by the Commission for some odd purpose -- and I believe that Darque is somehow involved in these circumstances." Havoc lifted both calloused palms up in a pantomime of surprise. "And we should care... because??" The Arcane Kid twisted his thin face into a sour expression. "Because he's a little freak of nature, steeped in local politics and no doubt well-versed in occult practices, and I don't trust him!" "Uh-huh," nodded Havoc. He grabbed the bottle, yanked open the bottom drawer, tossed it inside and shoved the drawer closed. "Yer not exactly from around here, neither," Havoc snorted. "And Darque probably ain't the only manager with his creepy hands up some witch's skirt." The Kid turned from the window; his glowing eyes bored into Havoc's expressionless face for a few moments. "True enough," he chuckled. "Still, make sure that concertina wire is secure. And add some more stakes to the wooded areas near the footpath to the outhouses." The Kid turned to look outside the window again; he faced the dawn with a small smile. "It doesn't matter where they originate; I just don't like surprises." ***---------*---------*---------*---------**---------*---------*---------*---------*** Prior to Turn 252 "Stand still, this will not hurt," an annoyed voice barked. A child-like figure stood before a muscular gladiator, intricately working his hands and fingers in arcane gestures. Clad in a green hooded robe with black, embroidered edges, the small-bodied wizard finished his incantation and uttered, "HAIMORROUSA!" The gladiator jolted as magical energies released upon him, but recovered quickly as the surge dissipated. A warmth overtook Malatesta, a euphoric feeling flowed through his body. Shaking his head and not sure what just happened to him, the gladiator looked down at the wizard. He opened his mouth to speak, but the half-demon interrupted him. "It is a protection spell. Your first turn in the arena can be a scary experience. No worries now," Darque gave a brief black-fanged smile. "Now go in with the others," Darque gave a dismissive gesture the fighter immediately obeyed. "Why did you to lie to him?" The question originated from a darkened corner of the room. A bald, beardless dwarf emerged from the shadows to stand beside Darque. Joining the pair from the darkness of another corner came a similar looking dwarf. The twins, Sidon and Tyre, served as Darque's personal bodyguards. One did not see the wizard in public without the pair of Lord Protectors. The wizard looked to Sidon with a feigned look of surprise. "Whatever do you mean?" "I've been with you long enough to know that was not a protection spell. He isn't long for this world, is he?" As a dwarf, Sidon possessed no magical inclinations. He hated the Arts; however, Sidon had been employed by the half-demon for decades. Only a fool spent time around a wizard and ignored the everyday occurrences around him. Tyre only nodded in agreement with his brother. While Sidon questioned Darque often, he was content to observe and kill the occasional assailant that tried to harm the tiny wizard. Darque chuckled, "Very observant. As to why I lied, it is what I do. Do you ask the wasp why it stings?" Sidon shrugged and conceded to the wizard's point, but Darque could tell other questions swirled in his mind. "I will answer the question you did not ask though by asking you a question. How would the authorities respond if someone were to perform a sacrifice on the sands of the arena?" Sidon did not ponder the question, but answered immediately. "The local authorities would swarm the place, the game might be shut down, and they would probably call for the Witch to launch an investigation." Sidon paused and reflected on his answer and how it related to the spell Darque cast moments ago on the rookie gladiator. His head began to bob up and down as he pieced it all together. "But, if a gladiator dies in the arena during the fights, no one will bat an eye." "Excellent!" Darque hissed. "It is good to know the continued education on the Witch's Isle of the Eye is not a complete waste. I need blood to spill. How it is done is of no importance. The rites have already been performed, now we wait." The wizard levitated to Sidon's eye level, "The fights will start soon. I assume all the proper paper work has been submitted?" He did not wait for an answer and glided toward the exit. Sidon nodded, but realized his master did not wait for an answer. He instinctively followed behind the half-demon. His brother, Tyre, joined him and they walked statuesquely behind the wizard like two moving columns of chiseled stone. They exited the private room, which connected to the gladiator holding room underneath the arena structure. The Pen, as the gladiators called it, was a large open area heavy with the smell of sweat and weapon oil. The gladiators made their final preparations before the games began in this area. A rhythmic sound of sharpening stones sliding across blades mixed with low murmurs and the occasional pop of a buffing cloth. Private rooms encircled the Pen and allowed managers to give last minute instructions to their gladiators away from probable opponents and their teammates. Leaving the gladiators' waiting area and heading to Darque's private viewing box took the trio through the mass of gladiators. Most parted, unsettled by the sight of a half-demon levitating through their midst. The arena veterans continued chatting, only giving Darque and his retinue a glance and room to move through to the exit. As they passed the new gladiators, Sidon reached over and patted the newest recruit to the Darque Ages stable on the shoulder and gave an approving nod. Malatesta smiled and returned the nod. Darque turned and gave a mocking grin to Sidon, "Youre such a sentimentalist." ***---------*---------*---------*---------**---------*---------*---------*---------*** Forewarned Is Forearmed -- Old Latin & English Proverb On the outlying outskirts of town, far from the maddening crowd of Shadowspire arena, stood an all-but-forgotten structure sporting a sun-faded sign announcing to passersby: Aaarrgh 2 Armory. Inside could be found the five original stablemates, honing their skills, while debating the worth of awaiting the return of the veteran manager, who had disappeared oh so many long years ago. "I hear that Hammer is still considering activating another stable," stated Seduction Hammer, as she practiced her moves in case the Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz stable received the call to reactivate. "Rumor has it that Hammer activated All Swamp Hammerz in North Fork," Perfect 10 Hammer purred, "but he deactivated them after one outing." "No guarantee that he will reactivate our stable!" boomed B Feud Bait Hammer. "I heard that Hammer deactivated Bonsor Long Names as well," chimed in Temptress Hammer, "also after activating them for one outing!" "I got word from Telorinthe," interjected Commander Hammer, "that Hammer has indeed activated Aaaarrgh Hammerz." "Did they get deactivated after one appearance?" purred Perfect 10 Hammer. "No!" Commander Hammer emphatically answered without hesitation. "They are still active!" There was the light of hope in the faces of all five warriors, as they renewed their efforts to be well prepared for the call to compete on the Shadowspire sands, should Hammer truly decide to reactivate his Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz stable, after so many long years of absence of competing upon the arena sands! DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. Finally! At long last the throne is mine!! As was prophesied. As for my opponent Hollowsoul maybe you should change your name to Hollowvessel seeing as after the beating you took I don't think there is any blood left in your body. Well I will be graduating soon. Hope to stay on top until I do. Your humble DuelMaster, Bad Roll-Ups SPY REPORT Good afternoon duel fans! Great to see you in the best no-tourney arena in the game! The original! Accept no substitutes! This is Shadowspire. You gentlemen (and any ladies present) have been deadly the last few turns. This deadliness is not from a numeric perspective either, but one of experience. Many experienced warriors have lost their lives since last turn. Phineas is off getting ready to report on the tourney, so you are stuck with me, Huard DePriest, arena color commentator and spy reporter extraordinaire! The old goat can have that assignment! I have no interest in being around so many walking dead. A funny, personable guy like me could lose his head in such a crowd. Let's take a look at this turn's action. We had a rarity occur on the sands of Shadowspire this turn in the title fight. Bad Roll-Ups was sitting comfortably upon the throne as of last turn. Below him, he witnessed the carnage that took the lives' of many gladiators. One of those gladiators, Human Centipede, was a teammate that fell by the blade of Tu Du from The Monsantis. Bad Roll-Ups decided to take up his fallen teammate's honor and challenge Tu Du in a bloodfeud. Duel fans, it was not a good decision as Bad Roll-Ups was assassinated and Tu Du takes over the throne. To this reporter's knowledge, Bad Roll- Ups is only the 2nd sitting Duelmaster to die defending the throne (excluding deaths after graduation notices). Trivia question: Who was the only other non-immortal Duelmaster to die in defense of the throne? The most avoided team this turn was... well, it would have been Shanghaied if they were active. Instead, the most avoided and active team was Inebriation and the team avoiding them most was actually a 3-way tie between Cult of Bacchus, Wicked Martyrs, and Darque Ages. The most challenged warrior this turn was Hrotsvitha. I never bothered to learn how to pronounce her name. That was a wise decision on my part because she is now dead, killed by Shem from Pray the Gods. I mentioned it was another deadly turn. It was not as deadly as last turn when we lost three 30+ FE warriors, but turn 253 will certainly be discussed at Otto's Diner this week. As mentioned, our former Duelmaster was killed. His death was perhaps the most shocking and newsworthy. Bad Roll-Ups' final tally in the arena was 21-15-0. Another veteran warrior, Pyrat from Inebriation, also bid his final farewell to the arena crowds this week. He leaves with a 7-11-1 record. Flare, a young warrior from Search the Sky, died this turn too. There were no random deaths this turn. Every death involved a challenge. Is there some omen attached to such weirdness? 'Tis the season for such things, I suppose. Before talking about the team rankings, let me first welcome Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz back to Shadowspire. I'd also like to welcome the new team, Devil's Bag, to the arena as well. I know that Hammer manages Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz and has just recently returned to Alastari. To Devil's Bag, introduce yourself and make yourself at home. You will find the place... mostly friendly. Dragonbane Guild remains the top team in the arena. Shanghaied and Inebriation drop out of the top 5, and they are replaced by The Monsantis and Wicked Martyrs. The Monsantis and The Commodores (apparently you need "the" article to be successful this turn) had the biggest gains by jumping up 5 spots. Through inactivity, Shanghaied fell the farthest with a 6 place fall, while among active teams, Inebriation took the largest drop, falling 4 to 8th. That does it for me, duel fans! I hope you had a wonderful time in the arena this cycle. I will most likely see you again next turn as Phineas wraps up his tourney coverage. Does Abomination have anyone or anything to avenge their fallen teammates against Tu Du? Four bloodfeuds saw honor restored this cycle from previous turns' slayings. Are the fallen avenged or will the feuds continue?
