Painful Meeting
Life is full of 'hard little truths'. I remember when I first figured that out;
I think I was ten or eleven. We were sitting around the table: my mother, my father
(this was before he took off), myself and my three sisters. We were eating a
delicious stew, which was a welcome surprise. It was our first 'meat' meal in a week.
For the past few days dinner had been 'stinky cheese' omelettes mixed with potatoes
diced fine. (That's how you get three eggs to feed five.) We were scraping by, but
we were getting by. However, neither of my parents seemed especially happy or hungry
that day, but my sisters and I really digging into that yummy stew.
Meanwhile my parents, with their unique brand of quiet intentness, argued in
harsh whispers, hard looks, and half-mumbled curses. When she wasn't glaring into my
father's dark eyes, my mom kept looking at us, in a weird, brooding fashion that was
unsettling. My sisters and I were chomping away, and I crunched down on a bit of
bone, and looked around for Maxie. He loved bones.
That's when I noticed that my dog was missing... Yeah oh yeah. There are trade-
offs in life.
Like living in Shadowspire, for instance. This place has certain advantages and
problems that just wouldn't exist in a simple hamlet like the place where I grew up.
For one thing, since its economy is largely based on the gladiators, Shadowspire
offers a certain amount of leniency towards the unsavory characters that make up its
gladitorial games. That allows all sorts of people to rub shoulders (and blades) with
each other, which means that the city always has a little 'friction' happening
somewhere. I guess the city council feels they have to bend a little here and there
if they plan on making any sort of money. And they do make a lot of money. Even
though the 'golden age' of the arena games are long gone, there's still a respectable
amount of loot to be made from the phenomenon of death, skillfully administered. I
guess that can be good or bad, depending on how you look at it.
On the more positive side, there's the Citizens' Health and Welfare Program that
is funded, in part, by the gladiators themselves (taken as a sort of 'tax' from their
winnings). One example of the benefits of the program are the clinics scattered
across Shadowspire. They take anything and everything for payment, and if they think
you have a chance at recovering, they'll let you pay in installments.
Two days ago I had stumbled into the Southside clinic, torn and broken and trying
hard to press the blood back into my ruptured gut. I managed to drag out my purse from
its hiding place and tossed it onto the floor. I fell down next to it.
Thanks to the gladiators in Shadowspire, there is no short supply of doctors with
a fair amount of experience in trauma of all kinds. And they know better than to
waste time and energy asking pointless and annoying questions. I was sewn up like a
tough old leather breastpiece, and placed in a clean bed in one of the back rooms of
the clinic.
Of course, I knew when I dragged myself across their threshold that their magics
and safeguards would guarantee that I was genuinely hurt and unarmed. All I had to do
was hold off passing out until I made it inside; I knew I would be safe, then -- at
least for a while.
There isn't a lot of consensus amongst the powers-that-be in this city, but ONE
thing everyone seems to agree about is the idea that clinics, hospitals, and the
people inside are 'untouchable'. A sort of 'neutral zone'.
I took shallow breaths; my ribs insisted that I do so. I hoped I didn't have to
puke any more; I didn't want to tear the stitches that ran diagonally across my upper
abdomen and my lower back. I breathed deep and tried to keep the room from spinning.
The doctors had told me that there is always a little nausea accompanying a
concussion. Yeah oh yeah. The negative aspects of living in a city like Shadowspire.
Trade-offs.
I had given the seal to the doctor and told him where to deliver it. He was
hesitant, but the sharp-eyed brunette nurse was very interested in the promise of
payment. She practically snatched it out of my blood-splattered hand and scurried out
of the clinic. I let myself go back to sleep at this point. I had done all I could.

The glowing eyes of the slender youth studied the bandaged form sleeping on the
modest cot. However, the youth's stocky, scowling companion merely spent a quick
glance at the sleeping man before contemplating their surroundings. They stood in a
thin-walled stall, with only a sheet draped across the opening for privacy. It was at
one end of a long, rectangular room, with five similar stalls around them; all but two
were empty. The burly man's grizzled flattop gleamed in the lamplight as he paced
with a slow, measured gait back and forth between the foot of the cot and the sheet.
His coal-black byrnie appeared to be a thick mesh of sturdy rings, heavy and
ponderous, but the frowning warrior moved in a fluid, effortless fashion.
"Calm down, Havoc. We're probably very safe here."
"Calm down my ass!" Havoc replied in a gravel-like harsh whisper. "I hadda leave
my battle axe in the little booth outside; I ain't happy!"
"Well, you weren't the one stabbed and clubbed, were you?" The Arcane Kid studied
the blank, wide face, bristly with two days of beard speckled with white. He rubbed
the blue enameled seal as he turned it over and over in his hand. "I wonder who he
ran into," mused the Kid.
"Not, 'who'. It's 'whom'."
Arcane looked up and threw a quizzical expression at Havoc. "Since when did you
become a grammarian?"
Havoc shrugged. "It was more than one guy. See?" His thick fingers jabbed the
air above the sleeping patient. "Here's where he got clubbed. Heavy, blunt-force
trauma. A war hammer, I'm guessing. A mace would'a smashed through the leather armor
better; would'a left some tears and rips in it, anyways."
"You checked his armor?"
"Yeah." Havoc shrugged his broad shoulders. "All his clothes and stuff is in a
bag on a coatrack over there." He nodded toward the outer area. "I just did a quick
inventory, sort of."
The Kid pursed his thin lips and tilted his head. "So the abdominal injuries...?"
"The lower one 'cross the left o' his spine, just above the hip..." Havoc waved
his open hand over the lower half of the unconscious form. "That's too shallow to be
a sword cut, even a glancin' blow would look different. This was from a dagger.
Standard issue arena-type, if ya ask me."
"I suppose I did," snapped Arcane. "You were peeking at the charts, too, weren't
you? How did you manage that?!"
Havoc sighed deeply and shook his head.
"And that hole in his gut kinda overlaps the cut from behind. Looks more like an
arrow wound to me, Kid. Likely he pulled it outta hisself."
"Ridiculous," muttered Arcane, shaking his head. "Ridiculous." He turned his
attention to the seal in his hand. With a slow, careful motion he lifted the gold
badge toward the oil lamp hanging from the ceiling; it fit neatly into his slender
palm. Its design displayed a sturdy falchion of gold, with a silver star blazing
above it, inlaid into an indigo blue enamel, and smeared with dried blood that had
seeped into its tiny crevices.
* * * * *
"I don't believe that Darque would get his slimy paws dirty," Arcane muttered.
"Besides, I've had a few people drop by that pawnshop. There's an imp behind the
counter, and a couple of ex-gladiators doing security inside. Everything seems
normal."
"All these 'lesser' imps look the same," I groaned. My head ached; my ears were
pounding away with every heartbeat. I wasn't certain about the cause. Could be the
beating I took three days ago. Could be the idiotic questions the Kid kept tossing at
me.
"Yes, well..." Arcane looked out the barracks window and stared at the men
training in the sand pit. He stared for a long while. I closed my eyes and tried to
slow my heartbeat, hoping that it might ease the explosions in my head.
"You said that you went into the pawnshop after you saw a flash of light, yes?
You saw the imp lying in a puddle of rust-colored blood, you said?"
I didn't even bother to open my eyes. "Yeah, yeah," I murmured. "Darque called
to the dwarf with the spear," I recited again. "He went into the shop. There was
another flash of light, similar to the first one I saw. After a few minutes I decided
to look inside." I took a break and did some deep breathing, nice and slow.
"The imp was spread out on the counter, face turned away from the door, but very,
very dead."
"The pool of blood told you that?" the Kid sneered.
"The shortsword sticking out of his chest was my first clue," I whispered. "But
yeah, all that blood... his robe was soaked with it, drenched with it, and it kept
dripping down onto the floor..."
"Hhhmmm." The Kid didn't sound like he placed a lot of faith in my story. I was
tempted to feel bad about that, but I had bigger problems to deal with first.
"Look, I'm not saying it's not crazy. I get that." I felt the pounding behind
my eyes, as if the pressure from my heart was actually pushing away at them from
inside my skull. "But look, it all fits. The Cult's little rituals go awry, and they
end up with four weapon breaks in five fights."
"Yes, but to be fair, DeGotti is known to be a bit shoddy when it comes to the
correct phrasing, tonality, and gestures of his conjuring."
I opened my eyes in surprise. The Kid was still staring out the window.
"How do you know this?"
"You're not the only informant on my payroll," Arcane scoffed with his
contemptuous smile. "Of course, it doesn't help that he's almost as cheap as Havoc
when it comes to buying his weapons."
I didn't mean to laugh. I didn't want to chuckle. I couldn't help myself,
however, and ended up almost crying from the pain racking my ribs and shooting through
my gut.
"I think he'd argue that he's more 'frugal' than cheap," I gasped.
"Whatever," Arcane waved a slender hand in a dismissive gesture. He was still
watching the men training. "The fact is, strange things are happening across
Alastari, and Master Darque is somehow pulling on a variety of strings from the center
of it."
"That almost makes sense," I muttered. That's all I remembered for a while.

Shadowspire Sword Shoppe
Hammer had every intention to deactivate his Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz stable, but when
he found the time to do so, the clerk at the Shadowspire Arena Gladiatorial Commission
was 'Out To Lunch', or so the sign hanging in the window of the locked building
stated.
As fate would have it, not only did Hammer get side tracked from deactivating his
stable, but Commander Hammer had succeeded in slaying Bad Match-Ups of the Abomination
stable.
Talk about Irony! This was the same pattern of misfortune that had occurred in
Morya Arena, when Hammer had considered deactivating his Flowered Hammerz stable.
Hammer was not so vindictive as to continue running a stable for the sake of a
Blood Feud, as was the case a few weeks back when after deactivating his Bonsur Long
Names stable, for some inexplicable reason his lone warrior The Arena Stalker was sent
out by the Bonsur Gladiatorial Commission to face Ms. Refinement of Ladies Of Quality.
You guessed it, my friends! The Arena Stalker now stalks no more! Slain on the
Bonsur Arena sands!
Hammer figured that it must be a new policy for stables who have a Free Fight to
have the top warrior from that stable go out on the arena sands to fight for free!
The same thing was transpiring in North Fork Arena, where Swamp Bogg Hammer was
still fighting, even though Hammer asked the Gladiatorial Commission to deactivate his
All Swamp Hammerz stable.
Swamp Bogg Hammer currently held the Popularity Leader position and was also
fighting for free! Hammer had decided to allow Swamp Bogg Hammer to continue fighting
in North Fork Arena, as long as he continued to qualify for a Free Fight every month.
However, the veteran manager decided against activating his Bonsur Long Names just for
the sake of Avenging a Blood Feud. But this new development in Shadowspire Arena was
another matter entirely!
As in Morya Arena, the veteran manager decided against deactivating his stable,
allowing for his warrior to face the possible Blood Feud from the Abominations stable.
Therefore, instead of deactivating Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz, the veteran manager chose to
remain active in Shadowspire Arena.
Hammer gathered his five warriors together to inform them of his decision, plus
introduce them to a Shagornan Elf maiden in his employ, one Dusk Blade, who was to be
the proprietor of the newly opened Shadowspire Sword Shoppe. Dusk Blade would serve
as the eyes and ears of Hammer in and around Shadowspire Arena, while his five
warriors continued to operate the Aaarrgh 2 Armory.
Hammer had other business to attend to in Seam.
SPY REPORT
Welcome to the land of no tournaments, Shadowspire arena! It is good to see each
of you here for this cycle's action. There are various festivals and celebrations
taking place throughout the lands, but it looks as if Shadowspire was just as busy as
ever with fights, feuds, and death! It was a great turn for some and a disappointment
for others! Where did you find yourself on turn 255?
TU DU of THE MONSANTIS has been our stalwart champion these past few turns. He
took the throne by killing the reigning Duelmaster on turn 253, fending off a
bloodfeud on turn 254, and he actively challenged a Challenger Champion this turn. TU
DU fought BLOODY MARIA of WICKED MARTYRS and came out victorious to keep the throne
for the third consecutive turn. For his mastery in the arena, TU DU has also been
invited to the Isle of the Eye. Congrats for being Duelmaster once again and on the
issuance of your Lord Protectorship! TU DU is managed by MANTA (should I add the
CLAUS for the holiday season)?
The most avoided team is THE COMMODORES, who are managed by Hombre. The team
avoiding most this cycle is WICKED MARTYRS. The golems say that SHEM of PRAY THE GODS
was the most challenged warrior this turn. It looks as if SHEM was on the receiving
end of a bloodfeud this turn from STRABO of DARQUE AGES. SHEM lost to STRABO in a 2
minute bout. There were a few down challenges this turn as well. For those that
don't like me talking about the down challenges, might I suggest you stop doing them
if you don't want to hear about it. I'll start at the top where PLAN COLUMBIA down
challenged AGLAIA by a mere 32 points. No surprises as PLAN COLUMBIA of THE MONSANTIS
beat AGLAIA of BIG LAKE OUTCASTS in a one-sided fight. The next one was minor by
recognition and questionable by FE as KNIFEFIST of WARBOW down challenged REPULSIVE of
WICKED MARTYRS by 4 points. DMobster has shown himself to be ambivalent concerning
down challenges. The final one witnessed ASPIRE 2B GREAT of BIG LAKE OUTCASTS going
down 10 points to face PETRUS RIGA of DARQUE AGES. ASPIRE 2B GREAT's face can only be
described "in disbelief" as PETRUS RIGA won in a 2 minute bout.
There was some significant movement in the team rankings this turn. THE
MONSANTIS takes over the top spot with an 12-3-4 record. Take a long look at that
record! You can clearly see THE MONSANTIS are more likely to kill you than to lose!
Huard warned you last turn, and I will echo his words this turn, steer clear! DARQUE
AGES moved into 2nd place after a 5-0-0 turn. THE COMMODORES enter the top 5 with a
4-0-0 finish this cycle. PRAY THE GODS and AAARRGH 2 HAMMERZ made significant steps
in the rankings as well with the former moving 5 spots up to 8th and the latter
jumping 6 places into 9th. The biggest losses for the turn belong to WICKED MARTYRS
and DRAGONBANE GUILD. WICKED MARTYRS slipped by 7 in the rankings to 13th after a 1-
4-0 turn. Our former number 1 team, DRAGONBANE GUILD, moved down to 7th after a 2-3-0
effort.
I hope Arenamaster has a surplus of torches lying around because they burned long
and bright last night after 9 Dark Arena fights. There were many repeat customers as
ABOMINATION sent 4 and SEARCH THE SKY sent 2 to fight by torchlight. Most
participants were new warriors with the occasional Apprentice and a single Initiate
level fighter. There was only one death during the regular fights. It is no surprise
that THE MONSANTIS scored that kill. DEACON JIM of THE OUTLAWS 7 fought his last
fight against AGENT ORANGE. There were 6 bloodfeuds this turn as well. The results
were equally favorable for the challengers and defenders at 3-3 for the turn.
It is nice to see all the new and returning team in the arena. Welcome to each of
you! If you have not introduced yourself, please do so (WARBOW, NO MEANING 2, and
KILL EM ALL)! A hearty welcome to Chad, who has identified himself in the personal
ads this turn as the manager of DEVIL'S BAG. I would also like to congratulate TU DU
and BRUTAL GRUNGE for their invites and forthcoming immortality. TU DU enters the
ranks of top PARRY STRIKE with a 66.67% W/L at graduation. He is tied for 2nd with
SANTA CLAUS of LA PENTARCHIE, and both are behind VILMAR of CLAN LONGBEARD's 70.00%
record. BRUTAL GRUNGE becomes DRAGONBANE GUILD's 5th Wall of Steel to earn
immortality and their 20th graduate overall. Congrats to you both! It is time for me
to bid you adieu! Whatever your customs may be in your various city-states and
provinces, I hope each of you have safe travels and joyous celebrations! If you do
not have any celebrations planned, then may you have a joyous time in-between cycles!
I hope to see each of you again for turn 256!

Malleos Primus -- What lies ahead is better off dead. So easily led? Don't lose yer
head. -- Bloodlust
Horrid -- Congratulations on your challenge victory and thanks for the skill learns!
-- Temptress Hammer
Misfortune Cookie -- Your challenge victory almost cost me my Life! -- Seduction
Hammer
Sphinx -- You might reconsider challenging me in the future! -- B Feud Bait Hammer
Tristan -- You are a rough sand dancer! -- Perfect 10 Hammer
Bad Match-Ups -- What Can I Say? Bad Match Up! You Die! -- Commander Hammer
Abomination -- As per my Team Spot, the Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz will remain active and
afford you the opportunity for a Blood Feud vs Commander Hammer! -- Hammer, mgr
Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz
Kid Arcane and Search the Sky -- Thank you for the welcome and culinary advice! --
Hammer, mgr Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz
Degotti -- Thank You for welcoming me back to the 'Finest Arena Around' and as per my
Team Spot it seems that my stable will still be around for a while longer! -- Hammer,
mgr Aaarrgh 2 Hammerz
Caelumi -- See here, I was going to be content with wiping the sands with your sorry
hide only once. Now, you went and mouthed off and turned this into a matter of honor.
As to our last fight, I hit where I was aiming. I didn't realize a single shot to
your leg was "trying hard to kill you." I'll put some effort into it this time so you
can later tell the difference... if you live. -- Luipada
Shem -- You didn't mouth off, but since yours was a challenge kill against our stable
mate, we have to put more effort into the feud than if it was a random. -- Strabo and
the Darque Ages guild
Hollowsoul -- :::shrugs::: -- The Empress Wu
Neon Plasma -- Typical man! You think the size of the stick is going to impress, but
if you don't know how to use it, darling, you might as well stay home. -- Clara
D'Anduza
P.S. In case I wasn't clear, it's not me, it's you.
Deacon Jim -- Not much to say on our bout. It was rather one sided and certainly all
in your favor. -- Petrus Riga
Hammer -- Welcome back! I can't remember if I said it or not in here! -- Master
Darque
New, Old, and Returning Managers -- Introduce yourselves or re-introduce yourselves to
the arena. It makes it easier for everyone to know who they are fighting, and it
helps me and the other spy reporters to include you in the reports. -- Phineas
Rannulf, SYP Editor and regular DM 81 Spy Reporter
Moonshadow -- Oh really? Dude, shut it or I'll shut it for you. -- Agent Orange
Kid Arcane -- Oh. By 'face down' you meant I would get tired from filling your little
Don Quixote outfit with bloody holes. Right. Now I see. -- Dark Act
Abomination -- Somebody is going to get killed if we keep this up. I'd rather it
wasn't me. -- Tu Du
Den -- Quiet? Good. Keep it up and I'll stop picking on you. -- Manta Claus
Starsmile -- Uhm, thanks? I'll smile at the stars for that one. Just looking for
skills or did you really think you had a shot at that one? -- Stormclaw
Zathog -- I'll take that one. I was surprised at how short that fight was. -- Brutal
Perfect 10 Hammer -- Nomad says "welcome" to your boss! I say "thank you" for the
win. Is the "aaaarrrgh" bit just what you say after hitting the sand? -- Tristan
No Meaning -- An interesting name. But whether it means anything or not, welcome to
Shadowspire, the center of "real dueling" in Alastari! -- Dragonebane Guild
Only four Pikers in all of Shadowspire? Come on, let the Pikers represent!
Tu Du -- Well it was worth a shot. Besides I'm the only warrior left on the team. --
Politelkoreknes
Commander Hammer -- I'd say my teammates will avenge me but apparently my team is
short of warriors right now. -- Ghost of Bad Match-Ups
Elf Chick -- Ugh! Again. I'm supposed to go to the DA and yet the RUG's have decided
to let me fight once in the regular arena. -- DA7
It's getting kinda dangerous around here.
Degotti -- Not sure what a TDO team is... so no on that. -- Chad, Devil's Bag
Chad -- "TDO" is The Dark One, manager of many Devil's this, that and the other
teams. -- NAIEI
Ryk the Dragon -- Those scimitar crits were just too much for me to overcome! You were
my better last cycle! -- Warwulf
Two-Ton Timmons -- Tore through your defenses and armor like a meatloaf sandwich from
Otto's does to your digestive system! -- Brontay
The Empress Wu -- Need to fire my weapon smith! -- Hollowsoul
No Meaning 2 -- I'd welcome you to Shadowspire, but it sounds like you may be a group
of Nihilists and wouldn't care anyway! -- DeGotti
Manta -- How is it that you get so close to me that you can smell my sweat? I better
start locking the doors at night again, I thought the Consortium was the only creeper
around, I didn't know you subscribed to that habit as well. -- Den
DeGotti -- You sent your war puppy after my dragon? That was stupid. -- Den
Hammer -- How joyous that you have returned to the sands. Now I can bolster my
already impressive record with additional wins against you. Just as Scorpio has left
the game, you return, how fortuitous for those of us that enjoy wins. -- Den
