TEAM SPOTLIGHT
The sun slouched across the rooftops and gothic steeples of Shadowspire's
skyline, casting a handful of shifting light across the city. Soon it would plunge
behind the broad, leafy curtain of the western forests. Towering banks of clouds
began massing and pushing into the city from the Northeast. As they steadily darkened
and expanded, cold damp air from the harbor swept into the city in measured gusts. The
lamplighters scurried from street lamp to street lamp amid bustling crowds. They had
their oilskin ponchos rolled up and buckled at their back in anticipation of the
coming rain.
Two figures pushed from the recess of a narrow doorway. The first wore a
deceptively simple hooded robe; its hem almost scraping against the cobblestones. The
material shimmered and glowed as it caught the failing light of the sun and the newly
lit lanterns. The face of its occupant was hidden; the robe revealed nothing more than
a slim silhouette. His companion followed, staying a mere step behind; he was a stout
man with short-cropped hair that stood like a bristle brush atop his broad head.
Despite the battle axe strapped across his wide back, and the ponderous weight of a
sturdy black byrnie, his stride was surprisingly light and graceful.
The pair meandered through several blocks before stopping in front of a small
weapons shop. A faded sign in its dirty window read: THE SHARPEST SWORDS AT THE MOST
COMPETITIVE PRICES.
"Hey Kid," muttered Havoc, "let's duck in here for a minute. I wanna see what
this week's specials are like."
The Arcane Kid shook his hooded head in a violent spasm. "NO!"
"As long as we're here..."
"We've more important business to deal with now."
Havoc frowned at the Kid, then at the window. "I guess I can come back after
we've had lunch."
The Kid made a dry chuckle and continued across the cobblestone street. "YOU may
eat there if you wish. I'm just looking for information."
Havoc's frown deepened as he followed the Kid. After wending their way for a few
more blocks the two companions stopped in front of a signpost. There was an arrow
pointing down the block to their left. WESTERN STABLES was painted neatly in bright
yellow.
"Yeah," muttered Havoc. "Like they need a sign tellin' us we're near a mountain
o' manure!"
"Peace, Havoc. We're almost there. Just breathe through your mouth; it'll help."
"Yeah, whatever."
The pair swept down a narrow alley that veered off from behind the stables for
thirty-five meters. It stopped at a tall curb in front of a faded blue, single-story
building. The hum from dozens of large insects, swarming in front of the wide double
doors, grew louder as they neared the building.
A large sign was set above the doorframe. It read: OTTO'S DINER -- HOME OF
SHADOWSPIRE'S FINEST WARRIORS; it was painted in large, thick, blocky print.
"They're always changin' that sign," grumbled Havoc.
Another chuckle escaped the floppy hood. "They're always having vandals throwing
eggs and whatnot at their sign."
"Yeah," Havoc grunted as he stepped into the swirl of insects and grabbed the
door handle. "I'm pretty sure it's one o' the other managers."
"Really?" Arcane didn't seem surprised.
The Kid waved his arms in front of his face and shoved his way through the cloud
of bugs; Havoc followed close on his heels. A squadron of winged insects attempted to
dash in, but the moment they crossed the threshold they immediately disintegrated in a
flash of sparkling light. The pair stopped just inside the doorway for a few seconds
to allow their eyes to adjust to the dimly lit interior.
"We gotta get us one of these 'bug killers' for the office," Havoc muttered.
Arcane nodded as he pulled the hood from his head. His glowing eyes swept the
room; a few patrons bothered to meet them head on before returning to their private
concerns.
Booths ran along three walls. Large round tables were scattered throughout the
middle of the room. A tall, sturdy counter faced the back wall; from behind the
counter odd animalistic sounds occasionally escaped through the swinging door leading
to the kitchen. The stools at the counter were large and thickly padded. Most of the
stools were empty, as they faced the long mirrored wall behind the counter. Given the
variety of clientele serviced by the diner, offering one's back to the room, even with
a mirror view, was generally deemed imprudent.
Several gladiator managers were present. They were spread out with their
retinues, about five to a table or booth. Judging by the bottles and plates at each
table it seemed that they had all been there for some time.
Arcane raised a shrouded, slender arm and pointed to a man wrapped in a dark
cape with a wide, tall collar. It was pulled up and hid half his face. He was
slumped in a relatively isolated booth at the far left. The pair made their way to
the booth; Havoc slid in beside the man, who ignored him. The Kid slipped in across
from the pair.
"Glad you made it," whispered the man with a wry grin. "Another five minutes and
they'd have made me sit at a stool."
"Two or more per booth or table, that's the rule," muttered Havoc.
"Geez Louise! You sound like HER."
Arcane made a deep sigh. "Could you two focus for a few minutes?"
Havoc made a sour face; the man next to him rolled his eyes and made an effort to
sit up. A sharp grimace creased his face as he changed his position. The Kid and
Havoc traded glances.
"So ya still healin' up? I thought you were visitin' that shama-whatever?"
"A female shaman," added Arcane. "Although what use 'magic' would be for a
simple tissue repair-"
"Hey, magic works fine!" exclaimed the man. "I just can't afford the local
rates."
"A few hours in a barometric regeneration tank would work as well, and probably
better," sniffed Arcane.
He seemed to want to add more, but his shiny eyes caught movement in the subdued
light. The Kid clamped his thin lips and furrowed his brows in a fixed scowl as a
skinny waitress approached.
She carried a small clipboard and had a tired, loose-jointed yet purposeful
stride. Her hair was a thick blonde deeply streaked with silver; the end of a
triangular pencil stuck out from behind her ear. She kept her hair out of her face by
wrapping it in a loose ponytail held in place with a gauzy, pale blue ribbon. Her
outfit might once have been good leather armor, but over the years she had cut away
the sleeves and most of the rest of the armor in order to expose her abdomen and some
cleavage. The name "Bobbi" was stenciled over her right breast. Various tattoos,
some blurred from scarring, undulated across her bony frame as she approached their
table.
"What'll it be, Kid?" asked the waitress with a worn smile that didn't quite make
it past a sneer.
"Oh, the usual, of course," Arcane growled. The waitress turned towards Havoc
and ran her eyes up and down his burly form.
"Hey, honey!" she slapped his mailed shoulder, leaned forward to allow him a
better view of her cleavage, and graced him with a gap-toothed smile. "Haven't seen
you here in a while! You hidin' from me?" She slapped Havoc's shoulder again; his
face turned a dark color. The man next to him smothered a grin with a half-covered
coughing fit that seemed to cause him some pain.
At that moment, only The Arcane Kid and Bobbi seemed to have a genuine smile.
Havoc dropped his gaze to the scarred tabletop. "We're kinda in the middle o'
somethin', Bobbi," Havoc muttered. "Can we talk later?"
Bobbi straightened up slowly. Her smile didn't evaporate, but it did seem to
lose some of its sincerity. "Sure, sure, Honey. Don't worry about it. You know what
time I get off."
"Yeah, I know."
"Could we get a bottle of some of that spiced rum from Xochithlan?"
Bobbi turned to the man in the cape. "You cold or something?"
"Not feeling well, thank you," smiled the man as he pulled the cape tighter
around his shoulders. "Now about that rum..."
"Yeah, sure." Bobbi sighed. She plucked the pencil from behind her ear and made
a quick scribble on the small clipboard. "We got in another shipment just a week ago.
I guess there's probably some rum in those crates somewhere."
"A small bottle with just two glasses, if you please," nodded Arcane. Bobbi's
smile disappeared.
"Comin' right up," Bobbi murmured. She pivoted on her heel and stalked away,
shoving through the swinging door behind the counter and disappearing into the
kitchen. She had passed DeGotti's table without pausing to notice Warwulf's beckoning
arm.
"That woman looks unhappy," chuckled the man in the cape.
"Must have glanced in a mirror on the way to the table," muttered Arcane.
"Hey, lay off," protested Havoc weakly. "Let's just get this over with, okay?"
"Oh, NOW you want to get serious?" The Kid's luminous eyes blazed. "Well, I
suppose you're right. We have a limited window to act." He turned his attention to
the man. "What did you find out?"
The man's smile twisted into a grimace. "It's weird. I had some of my contacts
check it out. It seems that the imp running The Haughty Harlot pawnshop is the same
one that's been managing it for the past four years!"
"Maybe ya saw another imp with a shortsword through his chest," Havoc smirked.
"Maybe," conceded the man. "But I don't think so. And I still think this is
tied into Darque somehow."
"Of course it's connected to Master Darque," growled Arcane softly.
The man shook his head. "But how? What's it all about?"
"I think it's got somethin' to do with keeping that Empress around," declared
Havoc.
"What?"
"C'mon," Havoc gestured toward the rest of the room. "You know of any other
managers runnin' a fighter with a winnin' record for so long? She's got 32 wins and
17 losses. Why ain't she gone already?"
Arcane and the man shared a half-hearted shrug.
"My contacts lead me to believe it has something to do with some sort of
elixir... an aeternitas remedium."
"What?!" exclaimed Havoc.
"A potion or panacea for death, something to induce immortality," muttered the
man.
"Yes," nodded Arcane. "An eternity elixir, so to speak. Master Darque has been
quite occupied with this recipe for some time. I understand it's a personal hobby
he's been toying with for ages."
Havoc tilted his head and threw a narrow frown at the table. "I don't get it.
Why should that get you so upset? Maybe he'll sell it once he's got it. Maybe
he'll..."
"Maybe he'll rip a hole through the fabric of time and existence and cause
anomalies that we can't even conceive of... yet!" The Kid's eyes blazed in the dim
light. No one said anything. The diner itself seemed to quiet down a bit; the clink
of glasses and the muted sounds of whispered conversations grew still for a brief
moment.
The kitchen door slammed open at that juncture; Bobbi marched out of the kitchen
clutching the short neck of a fat red bottle with her right hand, and two shot glasses
in her left. Warwulf vainly attempted to get her attention again as she swept past.
When she reached their table she allowed the bottle to drop the last few inches onto
the table with a loud THUNK. Bobbi then placed the two glasses in front of Havoc
carefully, then she turned and walked back through the diner and into the kitchen
without saying a word. Warwulf was standing, albeit unsteadily at this point, waving
both his arms; his stablemates giggled from their booth. Bobbi used one arm to shove
him back into their laps as she went by.
"Yeah, maybe Darque might end all existence as we know it," sighed Havoc. "But I
got bigger problems on my plate right now."
The Arcane Kid and the caped man shared another quick glance, then the man
grabbed one of the glasses while The Kid snatched the bottle off the table and broke
its wax seal with a deft twist. He poured a finger's worth and then motioned with
the bottle as the man raised his glass in a toast.
"As a great philosopher once said: One word frees us of all the weight and pain
of life: That word is love."
"Or 'death'", muttered Arcane as the man threw his rum down his throat and
smacked his lips in appreciation.

The Turf War is meant to be a "winner takes all" contest. All prizes, except the Endu
Award listed below, and 100% of the Gift Certificates will be awarded to the Captain
of the winning alliance at the end of the competition. It is the responsibility of
the Captain to distribute Gift Certificates. Moderators will submit a list of each
manager on the winning alliance to RSI at the completion of the contest for the non-
Certificate prizes.
All entry fees (rollup certs) are awarded to the winning alliance IC. Alliance
Captain Dameon Darkheart (Spectral Steel) will provide an address to Oz The
Magnificent (Use Consortium on RSI site or wfms101@aol.com The total 106 certificates
will be promptly mailed.
The following prizes have been secured from RSI for the winners:
1. Renaming of the North Fork (DM 47) arena; Captain Dameon Darkheart will provide
the name to Lee.
2. Renaming of all Dark Arena Monsters Captain Dameon Darkheart will provide the list
of 10 names to Lee.
3. Known Favorites for one DM47 warrior on each team of the winning alliance (warrior
must be ranked Initiate or above, must be alive, and must have at least one DM47
arena fight to receive this award). Each of the four winning managers, Dameon
Darkheart, Spirit, The Chosen One, and Var, will provide the warrior name, team,
and ID number to Lee to receive the faves.
4. +1 Skill bonus (three) for each manager on the winning alliance. Bonus potions
must be applied to living warriors from DM 47, no more than two skills per
warrior. Each of the four winning managers, Dameon Darkheart, Spirit, The Chosen
One, and Var, will provide the three skills, the warrior names, team, and ID
number to Lee to receive the bonus skills.
5. Two additional random rollup sheets or rollup certs for each manager of the
winning alliance from RSI. Lee will provide the following winners, Dameon
Darkheart, Spirit, The Chosen One, and Var, two rollup teams in the mail.
6. +1 Skill bonus potion (one) for each and every individual manager who fights in
all 10 rounds AND at least 45 fights of the Turf War. Bonus potion must be
applied to a living warrior from (DM 47) (Endu Award)

SPY REPORT
Greetings, fighters and managers, and welcome to the glorious arena of
Shadowspire. The weather is turning colder here, but it is still quite comfortable
when you consider our temperature changes still remain in the liveable range of
existence. Our cold is nothing like our neighbors to the north at Snowbound and
Vithicar. I like to admire snow from a distance. Luckily, I have reporters that work
for me I can send to the chillier climates of the Free Cities. Well, I know what you
really came here for, so onto the fights!
We have a surprise for our Duelmaster this turn! Tu Du faced another bloodfeud
challenge from the Abomination stable. Chase sent Politelkoreknes after our reigning
Duelmaster for one last shot at revenge, but it was not meant to be. Tu Du overcame
Politelkoreknes in a 2 minute fight. This left the throne open to the highest ranked
warrior at the close of the fight day. There were many worthy candidates, but the
newly returned Kitty Tantrum won out at the end of the day! Congrats to Kitty Tantrum
of Furry Fury, who is managed by Grimm.
The most avoided team was Big Lake Outcasts and The Monsantis avoided them the
most. There has been a war of words in the arena personal ads between these two
teams, so it is not surprising to see them in this statistic. The most challenged
warrior was Ryk the Dragon from Big Lake Outcasts. Swabbie Sam of Shanghaied
challenged up 29 points to reach Ryk and it appears to have been a quick one with Ryk
falling to Sam in 1 minute. The other big challenge of the turn comes from
Hollowsoul. He challenged up by 26 points to face Blue Dragon of Monster Manual.
Fate must have been on the side of the underdogs this day, as Hollowsoul wins in a 4
minute bout.
Darque Ages knocks off The Monsantis for the Top Team spot. A 4-1-1 turn
certainly helped the Darque Ages guild. The Commodores and Inebriation remain in
place, at 3rd and 4th, respectively. The new entrant into the top 5 sees Pray the
Gods climb into 5th from 8th. Cult of Bacchus made room for Pray the Gods by falling
8 spots to 13th after a 1-4-0 outing. The 8 place drop is the biggest loss for the
turn. Shanghaied has the biggest gain, jumping up an astounding 10 paces into 8th.
Warbow also had an impressive 7 place gain, up from 19th to 12th.
I want to take the time to welcome Weirdo and his crew of Kill Em All to
Shadowspire. I do so love it when people take the time to introduce themselves. It
makes these spy reports so much easier when I know whom I am speaking to and about.
So, Weirdo, enjoy the sights and sounds of this great city. As to Den... he is an
acquired taste, but Shadowspire and any arena is certainly more colorful with him in
it. Also, welcome back to Grimm and Furry Fury! With Kitty Tantrum's graduation,
Grimm now joins the Round Robin Society of Shadowspire by graduating all 10 fighting
styles to the Isle of the Eye! Congratulations, Grimm!
The killing has slowed down, but that does not make death an less impactful among
the arena rankings. Abomination cannot seem to catch a break as they send 2 warriors
to the Dark Arena and then lose a recruit in the regular arena. Their 1-14-1 record
over the last 3 turns should tell you all you need to know about their misfortunes.
Cult of Bacchus says goodbye to Brontay, who matched up with the deadly Schendle of
Pray the Gods. Schendle now has 3 kills, so perhaps some discretion is in order when
issuing challenges and avoids for those near him. Hellbraiser meets his end at the
tip of Luipada's sword. Otto's Diner has lost 4 warriors in the arena since turn 252.
The final non-Dark Arena death visits the Wicked Martyrs stable as Repulsive falls to
Nightcloud from Warbow. Condolences to the dead and good luck to the stables in their
search for vengeance!
Congrats to all the graduates. There appears to be a lot of them over the past
few turns. Kitty completes Grimm's round robin aspirations for the arena, becoming
his 15th graduate and 1st Parry Riposte. Ryk the Dragon is Den's 6th graduate and his
first Slasher from Shadowspire. Last of all, The Empress Wu 18th graduate and his 3rd
Total Parry. Those 3 will fight their final fights in Shadowspire next turn. Leaving
us this turn are Tu Du and Brutal Grunge. Have fun on the Isle, gents!

grabs! The Challenger Champions is filled to the brim with eager, capable warriors
who would love nothing more than to take a rest upon the best seat in Shadowspire. I
