TEAM SPOTLIGHT
A Sort of Plan
The Arcane Kid tossed a sheet of parchment onto his desk and leaned back in a
well-padded armchair. He sighed and rubbed his slender palms together in a steady,
circular pattern. His narrow face wore an expression of intense concentration; his
luminous eyes darted left and right but could not seem to fix on anything within the
small room.
Two large brass oil lamps, suspended from the ceiling, lit the room well. There
was barely enough space for a modest square desk, two dark leather chairs, oiled to a
glossy sheen, and a tall bookcase. It was crammed with thick binders overflowing with
handwritten notes, adjacent to yellowed texts on medieval weaponry. A fine layer of
dust covered most of the volumes.
The door swung into the room, barely clearing the leg of the second leather chair
that stood facing the desk. A broad, thick-shouldered man wearing a black byrnie that
hung to his stocky calves padded silently into the room and stood before the desk.
Arcane's eyes continued to roam around the room, left and right; his palms continued
to grind together.
"Hey," muttered the mail-clad warrior. "Kid. Hey!"
The man clapped his calloused hands together; Arcane twitched in his chair. His
eyes glowed hotly as he grasped the sturdy armrests.
"Havoc! How dare you come in here without knocking!"
Havoc made a rude gesture in the Kid's general direction. "I did knock," he
sneered. "You've been in here for hours. Ya missed evening practice and dinner, and
weren't ya supposed to have some sorta 'tutoring' with Eclipse before 'lights out'?"
The fire in the Kid's eyes dimmed; he relaxed and sunk back into his chair. He
dropped his eyes to the desk and shook his head absently. The two small jeweled combs
that held his hair out of his face twinkled in the lamplight.
"I don't know," Arcane sighed. "Yes, I know I promised I'd tutor him but... I
don't know that it'd make much of a difference."
"Yeah, we already talked 'bout it," acknowledged Havoc as he flung himself into
the opposite chair. "It did help some, but ya can't make a good sword outta soft
wood." He rolled his head along his shoulders; his thick neck popped and crackled.
"Cut that out!" snapped Arcane. "You know I hate that sound!"
"Lighten up," grunted Havoc as his head continued to swing in circles, first to
his left, then his right. He made a mighty shrug, raising his muscular shoulders to
his ears. He held that pose for a few seconds while the Kid glared at him across the
desk, then relaxed and settled comfortably into his chair.
"What's eatin' ya this time?"
Arcane leaned forward and rested his forearms on the edge of the desk. His thin
lips twisted into a frown which quickly morphed into his habitual smirk.
"The usual things, I suppose. How are those two new fighters working out?"
"Not too bad," nodded Havoc. "We don't see many siblings in this biz, so it's
kinda weird."
"How so?"
"Well... they both have the same style, for one thing. I was hopin' we'd pick up
a different kinda recruit at our next staffin'."
"We've got four different styles--"
"Naaa," interjected Havoc, "Ya gotta know Neon ain't workin' out, Kid. We got
three styles, and we need a heavy hitter real bad."
"I see." Arcane steepled his fingers and leaned forward even more, so as to rest
his narrow chin on them. His bright eyes bored up into Havoc's broad face. "You've
given him his options, of course."
"Yeah, yeah." Havoc waved his hand at the door behind him. "They all get the
standard speech at the beginnin', and I'm pretty sure Neon's been takin' somethin'
outta his pay regular. A bribe won't be a problem."
"Hhhhmmm. I'm glad our contacts in the magical realm aren't aligned with Master
Darque's minions."
"Ha! What magic?!" Havoc readjusted himself in the chair and jutted his head
forward for emphasis. "If by 'magic' ya mean 'trickery', then I guess yer set up
okay."
"Whatever," snorted the Kid. He leaned back again and pointed at the desktop
with his chin. "The form is filled out and ready to submit. Take it on your way
out."
Havoc looked at the desktop for a few long seconds, then eyed the Kid with a grim
smile. "Ya didn't happen to drop a little coin this time, did ya?"
"Whatever do you mean?"
"I told ya. We need a heavy hitter -- does 'great' damage or better."
"I have no control over the recruits that come our way," protested Arcane. "We
get what we get."
"Yeah, yeah," Havoc rumbled. He looked around the cramped office.
"What is it now?" The Kid sighed.
"Uh, I'm just curious... how long is that talent scout goin' to be holed up in
yer old office?"
Arcane shrugged. "Another week or so. He's almost completely healed, but
there's still the matter of Darque's master plan, which we don't quite understand, and
then there's the rumors of his aeternitas remedium."
"Yeah, yeah," Havoc growled. "That elixir stuff. Eternal youth and all that."
"Precisely," sighed the Kid again as he rose from his chair. "We need to find
out more about what's going on, and perhaps even make an attempt to derail Master
Darques little schemes in Shadowspire."
Havoc's dark eyebrows raised in surprise as he stood too. "Ya think that's smart,
Kid?"
Arcane slid around the desk with his usual smooth step and stood directly in
front of Havoc.
"Get it through your thick head. I don't like it when somebody messes with
someone in our organization. I won't let it go." Havoc frowned.
"Look," Arcane leaned his face closer; his luminous eyes glowed brightly. "We
must be absolutely committed to watching out for our own. It's imperative."
"Yeah, but our record ain't exactly the best, Kid---"
"So WHAT?!! I don't care what his team record is, what ANYONE's team record is.
NOBODY is better than us. They may be better 'connected', or have more experience,
but they're not better. We've had DM's and we've done okay in tourneys, back when we
used to compete," Arcane continued, jabbing a bony forefinger into Havoc's mailed
chest. "We've won almost all the awards in this arena we could win, at one time or
another. And we always Blood Feud. We don't have to back down or shy away from ANY
team."
They stared into each other's faces for a few moments.
"I guess we ain't gonna start now," muttered Havoc with a grim smile.
"Good guess," nodded Arcane. He stepped around Havoc and opened the door. "I'll
check on our guest, then I'll go for a stroll through the grounds. See if you can get
Neon to go through the standard inventory again BEFORE he goes to the Dark Arena. I'm
tired of losing good gear that way."
"Don't worry," Havoc sneered to the Kid's retreating back. "I'll make sure he
only takes the stuff we ain't worried 'bout losin'." Havoc shook his head. "But it
might help our record some if we'd maybe start avoidin' sometimes." He chuckled as he
followed the Kid out the door.
"Merry Christmas to ya, Neon!"

SPY REPORT
Good afternoon, duel fans! Huard DePriest here with all the arena news you're
gonna need for this cycle! You will have to pardon me if I sound a little rushed for
this spy report. I have been trying to make some extra coin between spy reporting
gigs by being a wizard's guinea pig. The spells in question that I'm testing are
minor things for the most part, but this last one has been a doozy. It keeps you
awake for extended periods of time. I'm on hour 77 as I deliver this report. The
hallucinations are getting frequent, and oddly enough, even though I haven't slept in
over 3 days, my hair is in a constant state of bed-head. I can only deal with one
thing at a time though, so let's get this spy report out the door!
We have a new Duelmaster and we have another short reign. Hollowsoul from Cult of
Bacchus takes over the departing Kitty Tantrum's spot on the throne. Kitty was
challenged by Bloody Maria, but was able to stave off the ambitious warrior from
Wicked Martyrs. Our newest Duelmaster, a rare Parry Strike styled fighter, was
challenged by Wyld Turkey of Inebriation. Hollowsoul ascends to the throne after a
short, 1 minute fight. Congrats to Hollowsoul and his manager, DeGotti.
Otto's Diner was the most avoided team this turn. The last time I was there,
about an hour ago, my soup and mead had a lengthy conversation about the state of
Andorian politics. I could have sworn the mead was Delarquan. Anyway, the team that
avoided Otto's Diner the most was Shanghaied. Was he avoiding the cuisine or the
warriors? Our newest Duelmaster, Hollowsoul, was the most challenged warrior for the
turn. It doesn't matter how many people challenge you, you will only face one on the
sands, so be prepared. Hmph, that sounded almost motivational . . . I really need to
sleep.
Ahringhol must be taking it easy on Shadowspire this turn. Not a single death in
the regular arena, and only 4 deaths in the Dark Arena. It was slow in the revenge
department as well. There was only 1, you heard me, only 1, bloodfeud challenge this
turn. Thyme Lord of Otto's Diner feuded Luipada of Darque Ages. Thyme Lord was
successful! Not as successful as a wizard's spell that keeps you up for a week, but
still, he won.
The Monsantis takes the top spot away from Darque Ages, who slipped to 4th after
a 1-4 turn. Otto's Diner, on the strength of a 5-0 effort, jumps into 2nd place from
6th. Remaining in the top 5 and unchanged in rank we have The Commodores in at 3rd
and Pray the Gods at 5th. The biggest gain belongs to Monster Manual who climbed 6
spots to 11th. The largest drop goes to Inebriation, who dipped from 4th to 15th.
A rather short Shewish Giant is waving a chicken at me and telling me to shut up.
Either I'm done with this spy report or I'm hallucinating again. Either way, I think
I'm done with this spy report. I hope to see my bed and pillow soon. Oh, and you
guys come back to Shadowspire next time too . . . or something. Toodles!
