She was short, 5'4" or so on a good day, but carried it well. The decidedly satisfied look that framed her face almost as well as her jet black hair could have reflected anything, really. The spectacular spring weather, the iced beverage on the small table at her side, or something else entirely. "Satisfied" wasn't quite right, perhaps "smug with a veneer of self-satisfaction." If one worked at it, the sounds of bustling preparation could be discerned from within the guildhouse. The slam of the porch door announced Shem, who was clad in leather and a morose smile as he wandered out tightening this and adjusting that. "I go to kill or die today," he said with a fierce grin. "Have fun," Vidhi replied. She stretched contentedly and took a sip of her drink. "Aren't you getting ready for the fights? You are probably going to get bloodfueded by Dense again, especially since you nearly killed the guy he sent to avenge that dumb down-challenging TP you killed." "Not fighting today." "No?" "No." "Why not?" "I have an eye problem." "Oh?" "Yeah, I can't see going to the arena today." Shem frowned, shrugged with one shoulder and then sketched a bow. "Enjoy your day, then," he replied and then headed south down Jakart street towards both Ridley Circle and the Arena. A short time later, Janna strode out and looked down at her guildmate with, truth be told, no small amount of affection. "Aren't you going to be late to the fights?" "No," Vidhi replied. "Not going today." "Why not?" "Vlad says I'm timed, so he's holding me out for the tourney." "The mailer?" "No, the Grand Tourney." "Wow, well, good for you. I'll see you later!" "Try not to get scummed again!" Vidhi called. Janna grinned back over her shoulder at her younger guildie and responded, "Not today." Vidhi poured herself some more of her drink and then sat back again. People wandered by on their way to the fights, some she knew and others she didn't. Some ignored her entirely, others would nod in her direction, and still others would nudge a companion and make a comment. Eventually, Grim Tickles wandered by and paused to glower over the fence. "You'll get yours today, Vidhi," he said hotly, a small amount of spittle escaping his lips. "Luxlord is going to give you a dirt nap!" "Not fighting today, Slim Pickles." "What?!" he exploded. "You HAVE to fight! You step down from that porch and go to your sand date with Luxlord." "Look, Dickles, I'm practicing war and everyone knows the supreme art of war is to subdue the enemy without fighting. Besides, I'm a pacifist." "A 'pacifist'!" he snorted. "You killed my teammate and nearly killed me!" "Non-violence leads to the highest ethics, which is the goal of all evolution. Until we stop harming all other living beings, we are still savages." Vidhi lectured patiently and then sat back and sipped her drink. "Toodles!" she said meaningfully, waved her hand and looked down at her magazine. Grim glared over the fence silently for a bit and then stalked off. Once more, the door slammed and Schendle cast a shadow over her. "Don't you have a bloodfeud to go to? I'm hoping you kill another Dense creature." "Move," she replied, waving him out of her sunlight. "Not fighting today." "You not feeling well?" "I feel fine, thank you." "Then what's up?" "The Alastari Postal Service is dropping off my wine today and they need someone to sign for it. They can't just leave it at the door." "Are you over twenty-one?" Schendle said, feigning surprise and, perhaps, doubt. "Out," she said, pointing towards the gate. "Go get your fourth kill. Luxlord awaits." Having thus dismissed him, she leaned back and rested her eyes, basking in the sun. The porch door creaked open once more but shut softly this time. The chair next to her creaked as someone settled into it. Without opening her eyes, she asked "What happened last cycle? I thought I was supposed to sit." She heard a sigh of disgust. "You were. Paperwork foul up. Commission had some old orders laying around." She pursed her lips wryly. "Always something, eh? I almost killed Slim Dickles, so nothing lost! Do you think this plan will work?" "Schendle killing Luxlord when he doesn't get his bloodfeud against you because you're sitting? I hope so. That would be gratifying. The other bloodfeud certainly threw a wrench in the plan." She finally opened her eyes, sat up to take a drink and glanced sideways at Vlad. "But that's just gravy, right? That's not the main point of me sitting, is it?" "No," he replied, drawing it out and making it sound like 'new'. He stared out into the sun standing over the hours across the street. "The main point of you sitting is that we're engaging a manager that has a different moral compass than most. We're just altering our strategy to acknowledge that. Redefining our defenses. Nothing more, nothing less." "No moral outrage on your part?" "What would be the point? It's just business." "That's why Shem isn't sitting and I am?" "Yep." She took another sip and laid back. That worked for her just fine. ***---------*---------*---------*---------**---------*---------*--------- *---------*** Weapons (A Hold-Over from the Previous Cycle) The 'Prep Room' was simply a long, narrow, low-ceiling room that was built out from the side of the barracks as a ramshackle afterthought. It was a combination of armory, dressing room, infirmary, and memorial. The thick, sturdy rafters were peppered with oil lamps jutting out from all angles, bathing the entire congested area in dazzling light. Over half a dozen stalls lined the walls, each one crammed with weapons, armor hung on wooden skeletons, padded tables, and everywhere shelves and cabinets overflowing with boxes, cartons, and odd-shaped bottles of various colors. The cold night air swirled in from small windows set high, mixing with the odors and the grumbling and coarse jesting common to any guildhouse. "Eclipse! How's my favorite TP?" growled Havoc as he glided into the stall. He slapped the giant's broad chest in greeting, slapped him hard enough to make him wince from his seat on one of the wide, padded tables. "Okay, okay," nodded Eclipse, his face reddening slightly. "But, uh, I don't like no shots." The big brute shook his head with a ponderous, weighty frown. "No more shots, Havoc!" Havoc chuckled down into his eyes and gave Eclipse a broad wink. "Well, there's not a whole lot more we can do for you anyhow, is there? You're about maxed out on juice, son. From now on you're gonna have to rely on pure talent!" A cacophony of cackling laughter erupted from the stalls around them. "Now he's in trouble!" quipped Malleous Primus. "Expect his losses to mount!" "Calm down, M.P.," Havoc frowned. "Yer not exactly flush with a real solid win/loss, neither." "Yeah, but I'm all ME!" exclaimed Malleous. "No 'extra' help from injections; no magic talisman; just 100% Grade A Piker!" He paused to flex his biceps in front of a tall mirror of polished bronze. "Yeah," muttered Havoc as glanced around and checked his six. "Let's just hope that's enough." "All men are stupid," groaned Etheria as she buffed away at her scimitar on the other side of the cramped aisle. Havoc grunted and spared her a brief, dour glint. "Too bad some of ya are too 'fragile' for a dose o'juice. It might just be the kick in yer narrow ass that ya need to WIN!" Etheria paused a moment to study her scimitar, then resumed rubbing the wide blade with her polishing cloth. She didn't bother to look up or reply. "No more shots, Havoc!" The TP's wide face was screwed up in a petulant frown. "I don't like no shots!" "Don't worry, Eclipse." Havoc patted the warrior's wide shoulder as he slipped from the stall. "We're about done with that for now." Havoc continued down the aisle and out the door at the end of the building, his eyes swept meticulously through every stall as he passed. He slowed and made a brief pause by Stella Mortem's stall, but the tall basher didn't bother to look up as she scoured the delicate blade edge of her great axe with a small, fine-ribbed file. A slender youth in a soft leather robe waited outside on the porch. His narrow waist was belted with a thin strip of dragon skin, oiled to a dull sheen so that its tell-tale scale-like patina came out nicely. A sturdy poignard with a brass pommel dragged down its sheath against his right hip; a brace of tortoise-shell combs held his long hair out of his luminous eyes. "How's Eclipse?" Havoc sighed and leaned his bulk against the porch railing. "Well, he ain't happy, Kid. He ain't gettin' much outta that brew we've been shovin' into his veins, and b-" "Doesn't matter," Arcane interjected. "He's reached the limit of his metamorphosis, anyway. His cells have adapted well, but..." The Kid raised his slender hands and shrugged. "Yeah, yeah. Well if ya know all this, why'd you bother to ask me anything?" The Kid shot Havoc a prim look of reproof. "It's always wise to get a fresh perspective on an issue." He gestured toward the door with his tapered chin. "How's Etheria?" Havoc rolled his eyes and made his own elaborate shrug. "Well Kid, she don't seem all that nervous." "Did she...?" "I ain't got no idea. She didn't seem too surprised, though." Arcane nodded absently. "I think the new kids will shake things up a bit, don't you?" "Don't matter what I think," Havoc growled, crossing his thick arms. "Nobody listens to me anyway." "I told you," sighed Arcane, "I have absolutely NO control over the recruits we get!" "Well, with all these AB's and TP's runnin' around, we need us a strong hybrid!" "Hybrid?" "Yeah, yeah," nodded Havoc. "A killer WoS, or maybe another Piker, or somethin' like that!" "A strong, killer ANYTHING," agreed Arcane. "But we'll just have to see what we see." "Just as long as we don't go makin' nothin' but TP's," snorted Havoc. "That Den is crazy!" "Really?" Arcane's eyebrows arched. "His TP strategy seems to be producing good results. It's difficult to argue with that." "Huh! Then let's just make us a bunch of AB's and go to town!" Arcane frowned and shook his head. "There seem to be plenty of those on the sands of Shadowspire; too many, really." "Aaarrrrggghhh!" Havoc slapped the railing with his heavily calloused palm. "I don't care WHAT we end up with, I just wanna win more!" "Yes, well, get to the back of the line," muttered Arcane. "This very long line." "Huh!" Havoc slapped the porch railing with a beefy, calloused palm. "We ARE the back of the line, Kid!!" They chuckled together in a semi-mirthless, bubbly effervescence that marked both their glum reality and their acceptance of it. "Maybe not for long," sighed The Kid. "Things change. They do change." "Well, we'll see," growled Havoc. SPY REPORT Good afternoon, Shadowspirians! It is good to see you on this beautiful fight day in the glorious city of Shadowspire. The coming of spring has brought out more fans to the arena, and it is always a wonderful sight to behold the masses enjoying the games. I know the local vendors love it as well because more people equals more gold coins! We can discuss the local economy at another time, let's take a look at this turn's great action. Wyld Turkey took the throne last turn, but it was going to be a short reign because he also got his invite to the Isle. In his final fight, Wyld Turkey fought Bloody Maria and leaves us with another win under his belt. Good luck on the Isle of the Eye! With Wyld Turkey gone, the title fight became a match between Swabbie Sam and Luxlord Black. This match was also a bloodfeud, so it is of double importance! It only took Swabbie Sam 1 minute to avenge his fallen comrade and claim the Duelmaster's title. Swabbie's time at the top is going to be brief, too, because he received his invitation to the Isle this turn! Congrats on the title and the invite. Swabbie Sam is managed by Blackhart. Well, looky here! It is the avoids report. According to the golems, the most avoided team this turn was Cult of Bacchus. The team caught avoiding them the most was The Monsantis. The most challenged warrior for the turn was Luxlord Black. As has been mentioned, Luxlord was involved in a bloodfeud with the Shanghaied stable, so his dance card may be full again next turn if Shanghaied continues their vengeance. In a gutsy challenge, Stormgirl from Warbow challenged Eclipse of Search the Sky, an up challenge of 24 points. It was brave, but it paid off in the end as Stormgirl was victorious! Shanghaied held onto a slight lead last turn in the 3 turn rankings by virtue of a kill. They removed all doubt this turn with a 5-0-2 turn and have a commanding 11- 4-3 record over the last 3 turns. Kill Em All remained at 2nd, but Inebriation make a big 6 point jump to take over 3rd. Wicked Martyrs enter the top 5 at 4th place, while The Commodores round out the group at 5th. Philthy Phil's squad has the biggest gain for the turn with 6, and the largest slip goes to The Monsantis, who slipped 5 spots. Welcome back to Shadowthorne and his squad, From the Left. There were a number of no- shows this turn. Is this because of the tournament? Death, death, and more death. It is a part of the gladiatorial games, so we might as well get used to it, eh? There were a few warriors sent to the Dark Arena. There were also a few killed in the main arena. Darque Ages new warrior Comgall had a brief career. He dies in his first fight against fellow rookie warrior, Three Sheets from Shanghaied. The other regular death came via the Shanghaied crew as well. Stella Mortem challenged No-Teeth Keith, but she did not live to tell any tales. Condolences to the dead and good luck next turn for any planned feuds. It is tournament time, but we have no such worries here in Shadowspire. What we do have is fierce competition each and every cycle. I hope to see you back next turn. We will once again have a new Duelmaster, but who will it be? There a number of worthy Challenger Champions who could slip into the role. Will it come via battle or through arena recognition? You'll have to join us next turn to find out! Until next time, dear readers. -- Phineas Rannulf DUELMASTER W L K POINTS TEAM NAME SWABBIE SAM 2632 18 8 0 107 SHANGHAIED (161) CHALLENGER CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -TRISTAN 2669 12 8 1 108 DRAGONBANE GUILD (13) KROW 2504 23 15 0 100 CULT OF BACCHUS (4) STRABO 2689 13 9 0 97 DARQUE AGES (29) ZAYLA 2695 13 6 0 95 CULT OF BACCHUS (4) FAST HACK 'EM 9 2653 14 12 0 91 THE COMMODORES (150) CHAMPIONS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME BLOODY MARIA 2536 21 18 1 87 WICKED MARTYRS (148) -MISFORTUNE COOKIE 2783 9 3 0 82 OTTO'S DINER (96) POWDER MONKEY 2683 13 8 1 81 SHANGHAIED (161) MUTANT CAMEL 2678 14 10 0 78 THE COMMODORES (150) LUXLORD BLACK 2608 14 17 2 76 BIG LAKE OUTCASTS (19) CLARA D'ANDUZA 2780 10 3 0 76 DARQUE AGES (29) PLAN COLUMBIA 1612 18 20 1 75 THE MONSANTIS (112) SCHENDLE 2596 15 13 3 74 PRAY THE GODS (155) TWO-TON TIMMONS 2578 19 13 0 73 SHANGHAIED (161) -STORMCLAW 2569 16 14 1 70 DRAGONBANE GUILD (13) JANNA 2581 15 16 1 68 PRAY THE GODS (155) AGENT ORANGE 2762 9 4 3 67 THE MONSANTIS (112) CHALLENGER ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME STORMGIRL 2712 6 11 0 65 WARBOW (170) -DRAGON SCARRED 2644 15 7 0 64 DRAGONBANE GUILD (13) SHEM 2719 9 9 2 63 PRAY THE GODS (155) BRACKISH 2782 7 6 0 61 WICKED MARTYRS (148) HORRID 2659 14 11 0 60 WICKED MARTYRS (148) BARSTOOL BRAD 2706 11 9 1 57 INEBRIATION (27) KNIFEFIST 2714 8 9 0 57 WARBOW (170) ADEPTS W L K POINTS TEAM NAME ECLIPSE 2565 15 10 0 55 SEARCH THE SKY (136) SON OF BLAGGER 2793 7 3 0 55 THE COMMODORES (150) CHOKE 2767 7 7 0 52 KILL EM ALL (173) -ORLANDO 2688 8 8 0 50 DRAGONBANE GUILD (13) NEETA 2702 9 10 0 47 PRAY THE GODS (155) PSYCHO STYX 2771 7 7 1 47 KILL EM ALL (173) ALPACA SWEATER 2585 6 3 0 47 FROM THE LEFT (166) DESTINY 2703 10 10 0 43 WICKED MARTYRS (148) BLYTHE 2829 5 1 0 41 CULT OF BACCHUS (4) JET-BOOT JACK 2741 12 3 0 39 THE COMMODORES (150) SILENT SPRING 2825 4 2 0 39 THE MONSANTIS (112) PLUG-IN CAR 2588 7 2 0 38 FROM THE LEFT (166) -THYME LORD 2752 7 7 0 37 OTTO'S DINER (96) -MELLOW JELLO 2784 10 2 0 35 OTTO'S DINER (96) SAMMY LIGHTFOOT 2834 5 2 0 35 THE COMMODORES (150) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME GOTTERDAMMERUNG 2787 10 2 0 33 KILL EM ALL (173) -HILL GIANT 2694 7 12 0 33 MONSTER MANUAL (87) DEATH DOG 2849 3 1 0 33 WARBOW (170) SOCIAL JUSTICE 2626 3 2 0 32 FROM THE LEFT (166) ASPIRE 2B GREAT 2750 5 9 0 31 BIG LAKE OUTCASTS (19) VIDHI 2840 3 2 1 30 PRAY THE GODS (155) HALFBUCK 2710 6 11 0 29 WARBOW (170) TOM COLLINS 2790 4 8 1 29 INEBRIATION (27) MALAKAI 2768 7 7 0 28 KILL EM ALL (173) CELESTIO 2801 4 5 0 28 SEARCH THE SKY (136) BLOODLUST 2769 5 9 2 26 KILL EM ALL (173) -HYDRA 2753 5 7 0 26 MONSTER MANUAL (87) CHALLENGER INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -WYRM CRUSHER 2814 2 3 0 26 DRAGONBANE GUILD (13) NO-TEETH KEITH 2852 3 1 1 25 SHANGHAIED (161) -GAS SPORE 2807 3 4 0 25 MONSTER MANUAL (87) INITIATES W L K POINTS TEAM NAME -SPHINX 2755 5 7 1 23 MONSTER MANUAL (87) PROTEST FOR HIRE 2597 2 5 0 23 FROM THE LEFT (166) QUICK FINGERS 2837 4 2 0 21 BIG LAKE OUTCASTS (19) FEAR MONGER 2590 3 5 0 21 FROM THE LEFT (166) -HARE DOWNER 2843 3 0 0 21 FURRY FURY (25) STARSMILE 2731 3 12 0 21 WARBOW (170) TOMORROWLAND 2841 4 2 0 20 THE MONSANTIS (112) STAR STREAK 2872 1 0 0 20 SEARCH THE SKY (136) -SONNY CROQUETTE 2799 5 4 0 19 OTTO'S DINER (96) SUBPAR SUE 2812 4 5 0 19 WICKED MARTYRS (148) THOK FOLDTEETH 2866 2 0 0 19 BIG LAKE OUTCASTS (19) PALE AL 2839 1 5 0 12 INEBRIATION (27) GRIM TICKLES 2838 2 4 0 10 BIG LAKE OUTCASTS (19) FERDOWSI 2867 1 0 0 10 DARQUE AGES (29) SLAYCIA 2850 1 3 1 7 CULT OF BACCHUS (4) MNI WICONI 2847 1 4 0 7 THE MONSANTIS (112) THREE SHEETS 2869 1 0 1 6 SHANGHAIED (161) -SIR RACHA 2853 1 1 0 4 OTTO'S DINER (96) -PIERCER 2854 0 2 0 2 MONSTER MANUAL (87) VELOX DOCIS 2873 0 1 0 1 SEARCH THE SKY (136) '-' denotes a warrior who did not fight this turn. The Mail-in Bloodgames that were set to run at Face-to-Face 58 in January did not process because we had trouble with the warrior data for that arena. Unfortunately, the warrior data was irretrievably lost. We have credited everyone for those teams. So here's what we're going to do: We will hold a replacement Mail-in Bloodgames (DM 97) on June 17. To participate, submit your team (10 warriors, design-your-own, one of each style). When we receive your team "rollup", we will send you back warrior overviews. Your strategies for the Replacement Mail-in Bloodgames (DM 97) are due June 17. We will process all ten rounds, one after another, and mail all results later that week. The costs and Bloodgames rules will remain the same. In addition to this, we will also hold another Bloodgames (DM 95), but this one will process as a slow arena. Design your teams in the same way: 10 warriors, design- your-own, one warrior of each fighting style. Managers may submit turn input each round for their warriors, similar to the Face-to-Face style Bloodgames (no challenges, only Bloodfeuds). Your strategies for the first round of the Arena Bloodgames (DM 95) are due on June 24. This arena will run ten rounds, once every four weeks. The Summer Face-to-Face is coming up and we will hold the regularly scheduled Face-to- Face style and Mail-in style Bloodgames there, as well. We hope everyone will enjoy one or more of these Bloodgames arenas! -- RSI BLOODGAMES at the SUMMER FACE-TO-FACE Back by popular demand, we will be having Bloodgames at the Summer FTF! For those of you who always wanted the chance to manage the last warrior standing alive upon the arena sands, your day has come. At the end of the ten turns, even though several warriors, bruised and scarred, MAY yet live, only one will be crowned Champion of the Bloodgames. And in this game mere survival counts for little. A great general once said, "The object of battle is not to die for your cause, but to make your enemy die for his." This general would have greatly enjoyed the Duelmasters Bloodgames. There will be two different arenas: FTF-Style (DM 98): for Face-to-Face attendees, with turn-by-turn strategies Mail-in-Style (DM 99): for all managers, with one strategy for all ten rounds Gameplay proceeds according to standard DM rules, except for a few notable exceptions: BLOODGAMES ROLLUP -- Your Bloodgames team is ten warriors, one of each fighting style, each warrior designed from scratch! (All are 84 points, 3-21, as usual.) DEATH -- As the name implies, the Bloodgames will leave the arena sands somewhat darker before they're over. It's a dangerous sport intended only for the tough and spirited. The Arenamaster will be less likely to intercede on behalf of a dying warrior. Even at a 1 kill desire, kill attempts will occur. REPLACEMENTS AND ROLLUPS -- There will be no replacement characters. CHALLENGES AND STRATEGIES -- In the FTF-style bloodgames, there are no regular challenges, only bloodfeuds. For the Mail-in arena, warriors may not change their strategy from round to round (to make it fair for those who could not attend the FTF). There will be no DA challenges in either arena. TURN PROCESSING AND DUE DATES -- If you are not attending the FTF, we must have your rollups and strategies by the Wednesday before the FTF, else they are due by 9pm on Friday, at the hotel. The Bloodgames will process at the FTF with the regular tournament. MISSED TURNS -- All warriors fight each round. Only the dead may rest. ERRORS -- If we make an input error, that warrior will be awarded a win and kill. Errors must be reported before the next turn processes. NEWSLETTER -- Warriors are ranked according to their number of kills. Champions of Bloodgames may write a column for the newsletter at the end of the games. FEES -- A Bloodgames rollup costs a $10 set-up fee. Managers may roll up more than one team but may run only one team in each arena. The fee for all ten rounds is $49. AWARDS -- The Bloodgames last ten rounds. Only warriors who survive to the end of Turn 10 will be eligible for an award. However, a consolation award of a Bloodgames T-shirt will be awarded to the dead warrior with the most kills. The living warrior with the greatest number of kills will be the Bloodgames Champion. Bloodgames Victor titles, 2nd and 3rd place, and Bloodgames Runner-up titles, 4th through 6th place, will be awarded to those living warriors with the greatest number of kills at the end of Turn 10, with one other important consideration: Each of these six warriors must be of a different fighting style. Win/loss records and, if necessary, recognition points will only be used to determine awards if there is a tie. A Bloodgames T-shirts will be awarded to the manager of the team with the most kills. The Bloodgames Champion fights for free in Advanced Duelmasters, and all Champions and Victors earn Tournament Victor status, which allows them to challenge once per turn with increased priority. These awards last for six months. The manager of the Bloodgames Champion, Victors, and Runners-up will receive Bloodgames T-shirts. AFTERMATH -- Warriors from the Bloodgames may not transfer to any other arena. Once the games are over, the arena and teams will be disbanded. The fighters have won their freedom and will never more be seen in the gladiatorial games. A special bonus will, however, be awarded to the 1st through 3rd place warriors. Lady Sheila Greywand, of the Isle of the Eye, has consented to allow the top three gladiators in each Bloodgames admission to the Advanced Duelmasters games. Any special training required to qualify those three warriors for Advanced Duelmasters combat will be conducted before transfer into ADM. Astute managers will note that this means that three warriors that are designed from scratch will survive the Bloodgames, win one of the top three places, and go on to immortal glory! One of those warriors could be yours! The challenge is yours to take. The final plans are yours to make. When the dust settles, remember: To the victor goes the spoils!
