Supper at the Acropolis

A glittering cylinder of stone and glass rose high above its neighbors in the far
northwestern corner of Shadowspire. The Arcane Kid glided across the crooked
cobblestone streets, heading for the tower. His glowing eyes glanced up; he noted the
burgeoning outlines of large, table-sized umbrellas, opening to block the early
afternoon sunlight as it swept the roof. The Kid quickened his pace.
When Arcane reached the base of the broad cylinder, he paused and smirked at the
scene before him. A pair of mountainous, orcish-looking hulks clad in scalemail and
helm patrolled the shaded alcove leading to the tower's wide double-doors. They
carried heavy, thick-bladed greatswords across their prodigious shoulders in an easy,
relaxed manner as they strutted back and forth within the alcove. Their posture and
the darting movements of their beady eyes indicated that they were quite alert and
eager for some trouble.
A Greeter wearing the distinctive silk pantaloons, high-collared shirt, and
decorative sallet of the Acropolis staff busied himself behind a small wooden podium
set at the front of the alcove. A thick velvet rope spanned the alcove from just
behind the podium to the wall on the other side; the guards stalked back and forth in
front of it. The odor they emitted appeared to unsettle the dozen or so would-be
patrons apprehensively lined up in the shade along the curving wall outside the
alcove. Nobody, Arcane observed, seemed keen to stand close to the velvet rope.
He walked up to the podium, ignoring the curious looks of the would-be patrons in
line. The Greeter leaned an elbow on the podium and offered a heavy sigh and a luke-
warm smile to The Kid as he ran his eyes up and down Arcane's narrow frame.
"I'm sorry sir, but we're quite full up for the late morning meal. The luncheon
menu is now available, but--"
"I think you will find that I have a reservation," interjected Arcane with a smug
smile. He produced a small golden ribbon, embossed with an enigmatic rune, and laid
it across the small podium tabletop. The man stiffened at the sight of it; he peered
at The Kid, then back at the ribbon. With a shrug and dry chuckle the Greeter
underwent an immediate metamorphosis; he changed from a bored employee tasked with a
custodial guardianship into a warm, welcoming host.
"Sir! My apologies, sir; I didn't realize you had made one of our unique
reservations! Of course we have a table for you!" He reached down into the podium,
activating a soft, high-pitched bell. The patrons in line looked on; a few traded
bitter glances of disgust.
A buxom, short-haired, redheaded young woman in a silvery toga and sandals pushed
open one of the wide doors and beckoned to Arcane. He retrieved his ribbon, nodded to
the disgruntled patrons, and winked at the Greeter, who had unfastened one end of the
velvet rope and was holding it out of his way as The Kid followed the young woman into
the tower. She led him to an elevator set into another alcove just to the right of
the doorway. The redhead waved him into a tiny chamber and closed the door behind
him. The Kid felt his stomach lurch as the compartment rose into the air.
Once the room stopped moving and the door had opened, The Kid was ushered to a
corner rooftop table by a tight-lipped, stoop-shouldered waiter wearing the
prerequisite satin pantaloons and silvery sallet. Unlike the other men working at The
Acropolis, he also wore a wide crimson sash and an ornately tooled leather vest. The
Arcane Kid glanced about the rooftop as he followed, matching the waiter's brisk pace
as he strode imperiously between the tables.
"I hope this is satisfactory," murmured the waiter with a dry, empty-eyed smile.
He stood aside and pulled a thickly upholstered chair away from a wrought-iron table,
positioning it for Arcane to be seated.
The Kid had been busy looking around at the other patrons; he thought he glimpsed
Den and DeGotti chuckling over some small, hand-held paintings, but the waiter's pace
and the crowd of tables and umbrellas, patrons and staff, prevented an accurate
assessment. Now, staring at his destination, The Kid hesitated for a second. His
luminescent eyes swept the table a few times, taking in the scene before he sank into
the chair that the waiter smoothly scooted under his narrow butt.
"Hey Kid! Took ya long enough to get here!" Havoc grinned; Arcane ignored him,
instead giving a curt nod to the woman at Havoc's side. She was a tired blonde in a
washed-out yellow blouse with a plunging neckline that offered a partial view of
several tattoos scrawled across her freckled chest. She met The Kid's glowing gaze
with watery blue eyes and a crimson smile that just escaped being a sneer. Her long
hair was streaked with silver and plaited with a glossy purple ribbon, creating a
thick ponytail that she draped across her shoulder.
"Hey there, Kid," purred Bobbi as she wrapped her hands around Havoc's elbow and
rested her head against his arm. "Nice view you got here; I like it."
"It has its charm," Arcane acknowledged.
"We were almost ready to order without you."
"Not likely," muttered Arcane, turning to gesture toward one of the waiters
standing nearby.
"Whatta ya mean by that, Kid?" Havoc asked.
"You two can't afford to LOOK at a menu here, much less order anything from it."
"Hey, YER the one that wanted to come here!"
"I remember suggesting it to YOU," Arcane retorted. A wave of crimson flushed
across Havoc's face, but it quickly disappeared.
Bobbi frowned and squeezed on Havoc's arm. "Well, you're here now," she
declared, reaching up to fling her ponytail off her shoulder. "Are we all going to
eat, or did you invite us here just to watch YOU eat?"
"Don't worry 'bout it, Bobbi," Havoc murmured under his breath as he adjusted
himself in his seat. "We'll eat, we'll eat."
Arcane glared at Havoc, but he avoided eye contact. Shaking his head in
resignation, The Kid took a deep breath and looked up at the waiter. "Does The
Acropolis still have the buffet menu plans?"
"Buffet?" Bobbi let go of Havoc's arm and sat straight up. She furrowed her wide,
penciled eyebrows at Havoc, but he avoided her eyes, too. "I didn't get dressed up to
come to some fancy 'All You Can Eat' place!"
"Calm down, Bobbi," Havoc pleaded in a hoarse whisper. "It'll be okay, I'm
tellin' ya! Don't worry 'bout it."
"Yes sir," nodded the waiter. "Which meal did you have in mind?"
"I'm feeling like seafood today," Arcane replied, business-like. "But you can
certainly start us off with our usual drink order."
"Yes sir!" The waiter turned, then glanced at Bobbi. "And the lady..."
"We just need another glass," interjected The Kid. "She'll have what Havoc's
having."
"Very well, sir," responded the waiter, avoiding Bobbi's scowl as he left their
table.
"I do hope you're not allergic to shellfish."
"Naw, Kid, I ain't allergic to nothin'; you know that."
"I think he meant me," snarled Bobbi. "And no, I'm not."
"Good, because the seafood buffet includes a wide variety of local and exotic
selections from across Alastari."
     "Hhhmmmph!"
     "It's really good chow, Bobbi," Havoc said, patting her arm.  "You'll like it;
trust me."
"Well, what are we drinking, anyway?"
"Jhelum's Justice," Havoc chuckled. "I know ya can't get any at Otto's any more,
but The Kid has connections..."
"Yuck! Otto's has his own brand of ale; it ain't bad. Do you suppose I can at
least have a bottle of that?!" The Kid shrugged and smiled.
"I apologize. I assumed you and Havoc had the same low tastes." Bobbi and Havoc
traded frowns.
"You can drink what you like," Arcane said. "Just tell the waiter when he
returns."
Bobbi's red lips spread in a veiled smile. "Good to know, Kid." She glanced
around. "Well, you go ahead and order for me, Hon. You know what I like." She patted
Havoc's broad shoulder. "I gotta go powder my nose. I'll be back before the food
gets here."
She rose and another waiter quickly advanced towards her and escorted her away.
Neither Havoc nor The Kid bothered to stand up.
Havoc and The Arcane Kid sat and stared at their respective horizons for a few
moments. The large umbrellas shading the tables rustled with the damp, cool breeze
from the bay as it swept across the roof of The Acropolis. Finally, The Kid breathed
a deep sigh.
"You'll have to warn me next time you decide to bring that woman to a luncheon
date." The Kid shook his head and looked up at the table umbrella as it fluttered in
the light breeze. "In fact, just DON'T bring her, please!"
"Yeah, yeah. I know." Havoc nodded and frowned. "But she really wanted to come
along, ya know? Things have been kinda slow at Otto's since he took his vacation, and
then that food-cart guy set up--"
"I don't wish to read a dossier regarding your decision-making processes," Arcane
interjected.
"Yeah, well, I didn't have the heart to say 'no'."
"You should've asked me; I could have helped with that," replied The Kid. Their
eyes met and they chuckled, then they looked away and shook their heads again, each
wrapped in his own thoughts.
"I know you like her, Havoc, but have you considered that she might be a spy for
Otto?"
"Hell no!" Havoc snorted. "Not his style, for one thing. Not Bobbi's, either."
"I wasn't aware she had a 'style'," muttered Arcane.
A trio of young women with vacant eyes arrived at their table and began unloading
covered platters from broad ivory trays. Havoc snatched a bottle from one tray,
opened it, and began guzzling it down. The women laid out a dozen covered dishes,
several bottles of ale, and one bottle of bubbly white wine. They disappeared with a
silent bow as Havoc put down his empty bottle.
"I think I saw Vladimer leavin' just as we got here," Havoc said, wiping his
mouth. He signaled the waiter to come near.
"Vladimer?" The Kid cocked his narrow head to the side and glanced around at the
other tables. "Does The Acropolis offer a 'coupon meal'?"
Havoc nodded at the waiter. "I'll need a couple of bottles of Otto's ale --
whatta ya call it -- Titan's Tears."
"Yessir. Would you like that iced, or at ambient temperature?"
     "What?"
"Iced is fine," smirked The Kid. The waiter nodded and left. Havoc shrugged.
"Yeah, Vlad was here; at least I'm pretty sure it was him."
"Anyone else we know? Maybe Den?"
"Naw. Most of the managers hang out at Otto's, Kid. Ya know that."
"Hmmm." The Kid chewed on a large, lime-infused shrimp reflectively. "Well, I
heard that Den isn't too welcome most places, but he shows up anyway." The Kid's eyes
made a quick pass around their area. "Did you manage to get across some common sense
to Eclipse?"
"Yeah," chuckled Havoc, opening up another bottle of Justice. "Like, 'just
follow the plan, Idiot'!"
"I have to give him credit," Arcane admitted. "I didn't even suspect he knew
what 'riposte' means."
"Yeah, I know. Well, no more o' THAT crap," declared Havoc. "All he's allowed
to do from now on is parry or take the hit, period! Now all we gotta do is light a
fire under our Striker so he can WIN more and then maybe--"
Arcane sighed. "I think you should have him start packing his gear."
     "C'mon, Kid. He's got potential!"
"I don't need fighters with potential," Arcane sniffed. "I need fighters who can
win!"
"You boys miss me?" Bobbi fluttered her newly-elongated eyelashes at Havoc as
she resumed her seat at the table.
"You're all we talked about," Arcane smirked, holding his wine glass up in a mock
salute. "Your presence makes the meal 'special'."
Bobbi puckered her reddened lips to reply. Havoc slapped a bottle of Titan's
Tears on the table in front of her.
     "Amen to that!" Havoc beamed.

                                 DUELMASTER'S COLUMN
                             Notes from the arena champ.

Greetings for the last time. Krow, you are a worthy opponent and your training
was very impressive.
As predicted I received my invite and here is what the Commission invite overview
shared: 14(+1)-11-5-17-10-13-15, in 45 fights I learned 67 skills attaining Master in
Parry, Adv Expert Attack and Riposte and Expert in Defense. My favorites are Short
Spear, Low/High rythm, Parry Tactic and Riposte skills.
May the gods favor you all. Farewell, Shadowspire.

-- Duelmaster and Lord Protector Osirus

                                      SPY REPORT

Greetings, duel fans, it's you know who, here to give you all the dueling news
your hearts can handle. What do you mean, who are you? It is me, the one and only,
Huard DePriest. Geez, Snide Clemens is right, what a bunch of ungrateful bums!
Anyway, now that you have ruined my day, I guess I will get to the arena news.
Osirus is our defending Duelmaster, but he is going on to better things on the
Isle of the Eye. In his final fight, our newest Lord Protector fought Strabo. It was
a lengthy fight, by most standards at 3 minutes, but Osirus leaves victorious. Since
Strabo couldn't take the throne, it fell to our highest ranked fighter, so Fast Hack
'Em 9 becomes top dog in the arena. Fast Hack 'Em 9 also gets an invitation to the
Isle, so the throne will be up for grabs once again next turn.
I guess I should mention that Osirus' graduation also inducts Visionist into the
exclusive Round Robin Society. Visionist has been invited to join the others at
Otto's Diner for a private meal on the 2nd Tuesday of each month. Currently, there
are only 6 members in the RRS: Le Pentarque, Nomad, Otto X, DeGotti, Master Darque,
and now Visionist. Congrats on the accomplishment!
The most cowardly team for turn is The Monsantis. Those yellow-spined, ne'er-do-
wells ran away from Big Lake Outcasts the most. The most challenged warrior belongs
to the Darque Ages guild, and her name is Clara D'Anduza. She was challenged by
Schendle and lost in a 5 minute bout. DeGotti only ran 4 this turn, what's up with
that? Did the Commission make a mistake? Was DeGotti too involved in his cult to pay
attention to the arena?
There are a few fights worthy of note this turn. First, Dragon Scarred
challenged up 22 points to face our Popularity Leader, Janna. It was a good move on
Dragon's part as he overcame Janna. Second, we have the opposite effect as Tom
Collins challenged down 25 points to fight Orin Scrivello. Shockingly, Orin defeated
Tom in one-sided fight.
Pray the Gods remains the top team, and From the Left stays strong in the number
2 position. Shanghaied jumped 3 spots to take over 3rd, while The Commodores climbed
3 to take over 4th. Clan Longbeard remains in the 5 slot. The biggest drop for the
turn belongs to DeGotti's crew, as they plummeted from 4th down to 15th. The largest
gain goes to Wicked Martyrs who jumped up 5 spots to 10th. There were no deaths on
the regular sands, and only a few in the Dark Arena. It is like you aren't even
trying! It's disgusting, really!
Alright, ya bums, that is enough jibber-jabber about the turn. I need to be
moving on to the next arena. Ya'll have been so rude, that I will not miss this
place. Hopefully, Phineas will be back next turn so I don't have to look at your ugly
mugs! Toodles!
