The dregs of society seemed to flourish. Shady deals, secret meetings, and strange disappearances always occurred on nights like these in Shadowspire. So much so, that the residents here hardly seemed to notice anymore. A man approached the SYP offices. He wore a crimson robe and a matching feathered hat. Someone like this would naturally stick out like a sore-thumb, but he walked with confidence and purpose, like he belonged there. One might think he was just another eccentric spyreporter. He walked up the steps to the door and produced a skeleton key. As he inserted and turned the key there was an audible click. The door creaked open. The man entered disappearing into the darkness and closed the door. The SYP offices were not unlike what you might expect: Neat stacks of paper, bins, books, and filing cabinets. There were also unkempt stacks of paper distinctly marked with the word "tomorrow" written upon them. Weirdo surveyed the area. Although the stairway to the second-floor was inviting, he approached a door off to the side. He opened the door and began his descent down the staircase to the basement level. He manifested himself in a long hallway of many doors, each labeled with a name or title. As he walked down the corridor, he passed by a closed door that read "Huard DePriest" follow by another door that was left partially open ahead. He could see stacks of newspaper that had been stuffed into brown paperbags through the crack in the door. As he drew closer he could see the word "Unknown" engraved upon the door. Raucous laughter erupted further down the hallway followed by giggling voices. As Weirdo slowly approached the next door, he read the inscription "Deep Con Caves" and quietly moved on by, leaving the people inside to their own personal affairs. Finally, at the end of the corridor he reached a prominent oak door. Etched into the name plate was "Phineas Rannulf, SYP Editor-in-Chief." Weirdo knocked twice as he pulled out a small pouch and dropped it at the door. He had already taken two deft steps away from the door before the purse of coin hit the ground. He made his way back down the hallway and up the stairs. He exited through the front door of the building. After he closed the door behind him he scanned his surroundings slowly from left to right. Satisfied, he stepped down the stoop and headed southward at a brisk pace, disappearing into the fog. * * * * Gossip at the Fountain A burly, short-cropped man strolled through the leatherworkers' marketplace in the late afternoon. His gait was smooth and quick, despite the weight of his knee- length, coal-black byrnie and a sturdy broadsword that swung at his hip. He passed the merchants, craftsman, and tanners hawking their wares; his dark eyes danced all around him. He looked at nothing and saw everything, wending his steady way through the busy booths. Just past the leatherworkers' booths lay a small oasis of cobblestones. This section was nestled neatly in an odd juncture between the marketplace, one of the paved roads that fed into the main street, and a small collection of warehouses that rented out space to various merchants. A few tall trees and the buildings along its eastern side shaded the area. It was about 20 meters in diameter --- five granite benches and a handful of nameless shrines clustered in front of an old marble fountain. The fountain was set upon a square block of granite that acted as a stepping-stone. Its basin was fashioned to resemble an antiquated design of drinking bowl still used in various ceremonies; a pair of thick marble columns supported it. Tiny cracks and chips throughout hinted at its age. A bronze statuette of a naked, winged man stood in the marble bowl. His body was lean; his muscles were sharply defined. He brandished a broken lance toward the sky, his wings spread wide, as he stared blindly into a ragged spew of water that shot up from a small brass jet at his feet. The man in the blackened byrnie glided atop the block and stared down into the bowl. With a small sigh, he dug out a small coin from his belt and tossed it into the fountain. Satisfied, he stepped down and sat at the end of a nearby bench, taking care to arrange his broadsword so that it could be drawn swiftly if necessary. Vigilant yet relaxed, he waited. After about an hour the shadows from the trees and booths stretched across the cobblestones. The merchants began to pack their goods. A beam of orange-tinged sunlight angled straight into the sightless eyes of the bronze winged man in the marble bowl. A gnarled, gray-haired man with a brisk, stern air limped briskly into the deepening shadows and stopped in front of the fountain. A pair of small combs kept his shoulder-length hair swept back from his broad face. He wore a sleeveless black leather brigandine over a faded red tunic. His arms rippled with layers of sinewy muscle. Polished steel rivet-heads formed an intricate diamond pattern across his chest and back, somewhat disguising the faint outlines from the rectangular metal plates attached underneath. A large knife with a wide, thick hilt jutted out from his belt behind a simple pewter ring that served as a buckle. Muttering under his breath, the gray-haired man awkwardly stepped up to the basin and stared down into it. With a grunt he tossed a pair of small coins into the fountain at the statuette's feet. Then, gesturing rudely toward the winged fountain god, the man limped down off the granite block. He lurched toward another nearby empty bench and sat down. He looked around, but didn't let his gaze settle on anything or anyone. He ignored the marketplace merchants as they bustled about their booths. After a few minutes the stocky warrior in chain mail tossed a coin from where he sat. It bounced off the chest of the bronze statuette with a dull twang and plopped into the gurgling water. The gray-haired man chuckled under his breath. "You been waiting long?" he grinned. "Long enough," replied Havoc. The gray-haired man glanced around them again; there was no one nearby. A few lingering leather merchants were hurriedly packing, intent on leaving the area before night had settled in. "Well," sighed the gray-haired man. He shrugged and smiled. "I presume the Kid couldn't make it this time?" "Not 'couldn't'," corrected the man in chain mail. "More like 'wouldn't'." "Yesss..." The gray-haired man's head swiveled back and forth as his eyes raked over the area. He nodded. "Let's get this over with." With the other man's eyes fastened to him, Havoc slowly drew a felt pouch from his belt. He gave the pouch a brief shake; the muted clink of coins crossed the dimly lit space between them. With a lazy motion Havoc tossed the pouch into the gray-haired man's lap. "I'm a bit taken aback," grinned the man. "You haven't even seen my report. What if it's not everything you hoped it would be?" "Look buddy, I got other problems waitin' at home, okay? Just make yer drop at the usual place, and this time try to get us more details," growled Havoc. "I'll do what I can," muttered the gray-haired man. He stood awkwardly, then limped back to the fountain and dipped his hands into its basin. He rubbed his wet hands together, and then turned to face Havoc as he ran his fingers down through his long hair. "But I can't help wondering if it's wise to tamper in others' squabbles." "Yea," frowned Havoc. "I hear ya." * * * * The sun was hidden behind the fringe of the western forests. Dark shadows spread and pooled throughout Shadowspire. The lamplighters scurried to complete their rounds, lighting the giant oil lamps that swung from carven stone pillars along the city's main streets. Many of the side roads and alleys were now abandoned by most of the citizenry. In some areas small, flickering lights beckoned the bolder individuals down dark byways with the promise of various amusements. Havoc strode smoothly through several crooked streets. The feeble light from the scattered lamp stands created many long murky shadows. Sometimes he would come across other armed and armored individuals moving cautiously through the night. They gave each other a wide berth and a silent nod. After a couple of kilometers of steady walking a wave of fetid air washed through the chill evening. Havoc had almost reached the end of a dark, narrow alley. From the street intersecting the alley, a pair of city oil lamps shone with a bright promise. Havoc paused to curse, wretch, and spit repeatedly. Pushing ahead, he came out of the alley. Across the street, about 60 meters away, he faced a tall curb in front of a wide, brightly painted building. Though unseen, Havoc knew there was an ancient, albeit popular, stable located to his left. With shallow breaths he made his way to the building. A large sign that read "Otto's Diner" was propped up on the roof, facing the street. Swarms of insects came into view as he drew near. The noxious odors from the stable began to lessen at the same time, though they were still discernable. A sign above the doorway read: "Otto's Diner -- Home of Shadowspire's Finest Warriors." Havoc snickered as he fanned the insects away from his face and entered the diner. A few insects came in behind him and immediately disintegrated in a flash of sparkling light. Havoc scanned the large, dimly lit room. A slender arm gestured from a small booth in the far left corner. Havoc sauntered toward the booth, aware that at least a dozen pairs of eyes were on him as he approached the Arcane Kid. "Took you long enough," complained the Kid as Havoc slipped into the booth. He sat across the table from Arcane, his back to the wall. "Don't get yer panties in a knot," muttered Havoc. "It got done okay, and that's what matters, right?" The Kid sniffed in disdain and sipped an effervescent emerald liquid from a tall, narrow glass. The bubbles glittered as they broke the surface. The waitress drifted purposely toward their table. Her outfit consisted of old leather armor, hacked apart and resewn in a haphazard fashion to reveal various aspects of her tattooed, skinny body. "What'll it be, Hon?" She smiled at Havoc. She didn't bother to look at Arcane. The Kid ignored her. "A mug of the house brew," Havoc replied. He placed a coin on the table, but hesitated for a moment before taking his hand away. "For HUMAN consumption." The waitress shrugged without comment and deftly snatched the coin off the table as she turned and left. "I don't know how you tell the difference between Otto's home-brewed beverages -- it's beyond me," said the Kid. "They all smell equally vile." "To each his own," replied Havoc with a tinge of irritation. "I don't see Den nor Vlad in here bitchin' about each other. Do ya suppose they've kissed and made up?" The Kid smiled enigmatically into his glass. "Who can say? I don't see Stik or Manta either. I suppose the big tournament has preoccupied most of Alastari." The two sat quietly and avoided looking at each other. The sounds and smells of the diner swept around them. The conversations had resumed shortly after Havoc sat down. They were muted, but apparently the Kid was able to catch fragments of their discussions. His bright eyes dimmed as he focused on the gossip around them. The waitress returned with a pair of mugs on a tray. She placed them both in front of Havoc. "This way I save a couple of steps," she explained with a wry grin. Havoc smiled up at her and placed a smaller coin on the table. "See ya later, Bobbi." "Sure thing, Big Spender." The waitress slipped the coin off the table and ambled away. The Kid waited until Havoc had drained most of the first mug before speaking. "So there were no problems?" "Naw." Havoc wiped froth from his mouth with the back of his hand. "It's all set." Arcane nodded absently and sipped from his glass. Havoc suddenly noticed that the level of green, sparkling liquid never seemed to drop. He shook his head with a frown and drained his first mug. Pushing it away and taking up the second, he paused to eye the Kid across the rim. Arcane looked up and met his gaze squarely. Havoc placed the mug down and shook his grizzled head. "Go ahead and ask," sighed the Kid. "Well, why are we doin' this?! None of us cares a hot damn what goes on between any of these other managers. Why start snoopin' around? Why get involved in an argument that ain't got nothin' to do with us?!" "Who says it doesn't?!" Arcane snapped. His eyes blazed with an unearthly light. "What if someone IS playing loose with the rules of the Shadowspire arena? Should we turn a blind eye to that?" Havoc grimaced and took a long pull from his mug. "I don't seem to recall any of us even noticing anything funny, Kid. That is, not until Den had somethin' to say." Arcane shrugged and waved a slender hand in dismissal. "Potato, To-mato." "Really? And what if it turns out that there's somethin' goin' on ya don't like? What then? Wave a few pennants from yer box office seat?" "Well, lobby for some changes, at the very least..." Arcane shifted uneasily in his seat as Havoc glared into his bright eyes. "Havoc, Havoc, Havoc..." Arcane sighed. "There are a multitude of complex issues involved with this situation, I'm sure. I can't possibly explain them all to you. You'll just have to trust me." Havoc frowned and took another long pull from his mug. "We're not backin' out of this arena again, are we?" "Oh no, not that." Arcane sighed and glanced up at the smoke-tinged ceiling. "We have too many resources committed to this enterprise. In fact, I was hoping we could soon open another branch in the second 'No Tourney' arena...." "Yeah." Havoc sighed also and looked around the diner. "I'll believe that when I see it," he said wistfully. Arcane allowed a ghost of a smile to flit across his narrow face. DUELMASTER'S COLUMN Notes from the arena champ. DM Column -- DM#81 Turn#272 Well, well, well...I'd be lying if I said I expected to be DM of Shadowspire this early in my career! I'd also be lying if I said I expected to KILL the outgoing DM! I know I have some skill, but realistically, I don't expect to be here next turn, but hey, stranger things have happened! DeGotti thought he knew my favorite weapon, but is now having second thoughts! You guys have been a bit tough on my team the past 4 turns or so, but I guess cycles like that happen, look at Vlad's team, who have been on fire as of late. Being so early in my gladiatorial career, I really don't know what else to talk about. Until next time. Your humble Duelmaster, Blythe SPY REPORT Welcome to the madhouse that is known throughout the land as Shadowspire! I have been doing this spy reporting gig for a long time, and I must admit the last few turns in this arena have been some of my favorites to watch. Murder, intrigue, and trash talk abound! Okay, not so much murder, but there is a little intrigue and lots of trash talk. Let's take a look at the action for turn 272. To say we had a shocking title match last turn would be an immense understatement. We had a rock 'em - sock 'em death match for the ages as the departing Lord Protector Fast Hack 'em 9 bloodfeuded Blythe. In a shocker, Blythe killed Fast Hack 'em 9 and took the throne. All seemed well and good, until Blythe looked beneath him and noticed a pack of attention-starved Challenger Champions licking their lips and seeking their chance at glory -- at Blythe's expense! Horrid got lucky and got the call from the Commission to face Blythe in the title fight. It wasn't even close as Horrid takes the throne away from young Blythe in 1 minute. Congrats to our new Duelmaster, Horrid. Horrid is managed by DMobster. The most avoided team for the turn was Cult of Bacchus. Ironically, it was Wicked Martyrs that avoided them the most. For those slow on the uptake, see the above title fight discussion for the irony... or is it just coincidence? Ah well, it was strange to say the least. The most challenged warrior for the turn was our former Duelmaster Blythe. I have already related to you how that fight ended (hint: not well for Blythe). I want to say welcome to the new team, Bloodhammer Clan. May your stay in Shadowspire be glorious and storied! Death was a familiar, if unwelcome friend, in Shadowspire this turn. We witnessed 11 deaths this turn, and the majority of them took place on the regular arena sands. Needless to say, turn 272 was bloody! Leading the line to the undertaker's office is Den. His new Big Lake Solution team will be burying 3 of its members this turn. Difficult and Final matched up randomly in the Initiates and were killed during their bouts. The other death came via a down challenge from The Monsantis. Silent Spring went down 32 points and 9 arena fights to kill Hopeful. Everyone knows there is no love loss between these guilds, so it will be interesting to watch things unfold. There were 2 other notable deaths (notable because of the fighter's experience levels). Alpaca Sweater has fought his last in Shadowspire. Zayla, our newest Lord Protector, challenged up 17 and killed last turn's highest ranked Aimed Blow. The other surprising death was a random match up between Sphinx of Monster Manual and Sonny Croquette of Otto's Diner. Sadly, Sonny did not walk out alive from this match. Condolences to the dead, and luck to those who seek revenge for their memories! Pray the Gods were absent this turn, so they fall from the number 1 spot. Jumping up 8 places to seize the lead is Wicked Martyrs. The Monsantis climbed into the top 5 and occupy the 3rd slot, while Otto's Diner and The Commodores close out the top 5 teams. The largest gain belongs to the aforementioned Wicked Martyrs. The biggest loss for the turn goes to Shanghaied, who fell 9 places from 3rd to 12th. The new addition to the arena, Bloodhammer Clan, debuts with a respectable 2-3-1 record. What did I tell you? It was an exciting turn, wasn't it!?!? I can't wait until next cycle to see how some of these bloodfeuds play out. People have been mouthing off in the arena. They have been talking trash to one another between turns! Isn't it glorious? This is what dueling is supposed to be about: complete and utter disdain for one's enemies! Blood, sweat, and more blood! Hmph, I'm getting the cut sign, so I better bottle up all this excitement. I've wanted to see us match-up for a long time. It was really entertaining.. mostly because I won. -- Malakai Vidhi -- You platemail wearing freak! -- Choke Havoc -- A woman divides. -- Weirdo DeGotti -- Ok, NOW we're finished, sigh. -- Hombre Vlad -- Damn! I bet you ruined Laser Discs too! -- DeGotti Weirdo -- The commission has something against Krow fighting consecutive turns for some reason! -- DeGotti Everyone: Check your IDs and makes sure you're writing the right arena number on your strategy sheet. We've had way too much of that, lately. And maybe mail a day earlier. -- GC Lackey #7 Psycho Styx -- Sounds like you try too hard and aren't skilled enough! -- Slaycia Visionist -- I hope you blew your fingers off over the 4th. Then you couldn't pick your nose with the sick zeal you usually do. Oh, I enjoyed watching my rookies mow down your dinosaurs last turn. -- Den Womanta -- So, strange deal, I was walking to the arena with a whistle on my lips as I usually do. Then I noticed the wind whipping through the trees and several leaves were sprung free and cast across my path. As I watched them, a fleeting thought went through my mind, it was an empty thought void of any importance and I wondered why it was even there. Then I smiled as I realized, I must have been thinking of you. -- Den Vlad -- Send your down challenges my way, it will save me the trouble of wasting a challenge on your garbage. Oh, don't let your lack of integrity prevent you from those rare up challenges either. They would impress your little friends Tiny Stick and Womanta, probably even get you a nice hug from them. -- Den Hombre -- I don't have time this week, but next week I plan to really pick on you. Better let your mom know you will need a hug then. -- Den BloodLust -- Walk softly and carry a big stick didn't work this time. -- Pavil Last -- Hopefully the LAST time I see you on the sands! -- Whing Difficult -- Damn swing first, Swing last crap. Tanks fer nuttin. -- Zurray Trashman -- YES I FINALLY WON!!!!! Ohh sorry, well fought big guy. -- Tarlee SYP -- Thanks for the Special Report. Good to see the Longbeards still on the lists after being away for 2 years. As always keep up the good work. -- Visionist and Clan Longbeard Blythe -- Congrats at taking the title so early in your career. -- Clan Longbeard LAST WEEK'S FIGHTS BLOODLUST was barely slain by DARK CHAMPION in a 2 minute bloody Dark Arena fight.
